I sure would like to see some of these intriguing Chinese pigments, like the Blue Lake Source (? Was that the name?) become better known. I wonder why so many Chinese companies don’t think it’s worth it to have error-free and well-translated materials when so many Chinese students learn English well, while in college in the USA? For me, I can’t help wonder if they’re intentionally being confusing, which I think backfires into loss of trust and sales. Thanks, Lindsay, for communicating with them about the pigments. This episode was fun and informative. Really like the in-depth format. Top notch.
Oddly enough I really enjoy watching you swatch paint, I think it's kind pf calming, with the added bonus of learning about pigments. I'm also seeking some suggestions: I have a 2 1/2 year old granddaughter who is showing interest in making colorful marks on paper. I would like to make her an art journal for her to draw and paint in, and some supplies to glue colorful things together and decorate it. So far the only restriction I have been given, is the colors must be washable. I want to keep this first one small, in case it's not the great idea I think it is. Any ideas?
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you. I hadn't thought of the pastels. Do you think finger paints would be good? Just the primaries at this point. I just remembered you have a playlist about doing art with kids...I will check that out! Thanks again!
Prang and Crayola both have washable watercolors. I can't recommend Faber Castel (I think I spelled that right) because they have a smell to them that lingers. Most importantly though is paper for the marks to go on. Start small because children have a tendency to make a few marks and then they are done with the whole sheet! I think it's something they're being subconsciously taught in school that they have to hurry up and finish the "book/tablet" because they have to move on to the next thing. At least that's how my grandniece seems to be. 🤷♀️
I have a Supervision tubes set. They have the exact same pigment number on every tube. The colors are nice, but the reviews I have read say the lightfastness is horrid. Live and learn, I guess.
Hi! Lindsay this is a fantastic video, super fun and cheerful and helpful. Side note: I want to apologize for my weirdly overexcited long comments. I promise my intentions are never malicious..I am just crazy passionate about art; especially watercolor and I understand I can come on a little strong at times-which is off putting; even offensive and for that I apologize immensely. I deeply appreciate what you do here on UA-cam, I am and always will be a huge fan! Please take care and much love 💙
thanks for reviewing this set. i've been interested in the bamboo kit, but am now a bit put off by all the packaging. The acrylic lid feels like a missed opportunity to have maybe molded the inside into a few mixing wells... still not going to be worth $70 for me...
I’ve been looking at this palette in a tin box for $45 rn on Amazon but if it’s comparable to Cotman or Phoenix, I’ll pass. I was hoping it was similar to their granulating paints but it’s the same paints I have in other brands except this one has questionable pigment info 😂 Thank you for reviewing them. I can’t find many reviews on this specific palette.
This it a touch better than cotman 8d say but not like their granulating colors. They offer a 12 half pan set if granulating colors here amzn.to/3ZmhZTW tho
Good review Lindsay! I like the colors but hate the wooden pallet with the dark mixing cover. Not sure I would buy it though. Would rather spend my money on tube paints.
Do you know of a guide comparable to the Wilcox guide from 2001? Probably now it would be online. Love learning about pigments just because I find it interesting. Thanks for another great video.🤗
Yes, the 2 I use the most is art is creation pigment database and handprint.com handprint is limited to watercolor pigments and it doesn't have some of the pigments that are found in cheaper Chinese paint tho and they can feature newer ones or ones used in plastics or cosmetics. Both are good to reference tho.
Way way way too expensive! I enjoyed this video but I thought you were doing that new W&N travel pallet today..... I'm so excited to see that one for some reason. Not for the paint but the pallet. That being said I can watch and listen to pigment info all day! I would pay for that class! Learning about pigments, inks, and dyes in watercolor. Learning the basic lingo like quinacrodone, phtalo, guinuine, hue, it's actually all really complicated but so so interesting. When I found handshake I was so excited so much information that I'm still learning. Watercolor really has became a passion for me. I'm not good at art. But I love putting color on a page, and literally love watching it dry and watch it oxidize. 🙃 yep I'm a nut! But poor you too have a nut like me as a fan! 😆 🤣 😂
Hi, I just heard that Windsor and Newton had to change the formula on certain colors because on of the pigments is no longer available. Just wondered if you have heard anything to this effect.
No, they changed pigments to save money. The pigments innthe cotman range were pretty standard. Nothing rare. They got rid of the more expensive series 2 colors to be able to price it all the same and cut costs. I see them doing the same exact thing with their professional set of 24. I bought that set in in 2017 and it had more expensive colors in it and the price us higher now. I'm not happy with winsor &newtons recent choices: 1. Moved production of cotman paints and professional watercolor markers to China 2. Released "artists" oil pastels, soft pastels and colored pencils that are all made in China (looks private labled with high prices and no open stock availability) 3. Made a big deal out of "cadmium free" colors with no pigment codes.basically (in my opinion) cheaper hues to replace cadmiums but they charge as much and pat themselves in the back for being eco conscious. This company is sadly going down hill and grabbing all the cash they can on the way down in my opinion.
@@thefrugalcrafter Wow! I had no idea! That is sad and disappointing news. Thank you for sharing. It is good to know. Now I can make better decisions as to where I spend my hard earned money.
So very pretty but a little pricey for watercolors I really don't need. I would love to have the palette so it'll go on the list in the hopes of a price drop, lol
That PV19 is a beautiful true looking purple - this is my “destination” color that I’ve been looking for in alcohol markers! I’m now up to brand #10 in alcohol markers and can’t find this color, and the colors to blend with it. It’s my 2nd nemesis and a never ending quest for color 😔
I’m always skeptical of wood watercolor palettes. Wood and water don’t typically get along well. I imagine it warping or splitting over time if you’re using it frequently.
I actually have not one watercolor set like that. No pans at all. I have watercolor pencils and Karen D'Ache crayon ll. Love them. I'll look into these. 1st though my new Subaru just got damaged by hail storm. Of course I have a deductible. It got the entire top. Even doors. Seriously? But there's always something. Right? Love the vid . 😄 I smell everything.
Ive been looking at these on and off on Ali Express, but I do t always like buying from there as it takes for ever and I'm never sure if it is definitely the right/ real paints. I've bought some bits and most have been ok but I don't want to pay $70 for the supervision. I will wait for it to go down in price. Though they do look very nice, I think a lot of what you are paying for is the packaging.

Dear Lindsay, Below, An idea, a QUESTION for you (half way down), and a short story about my first palette! You just gave me an idea.... Ding! Next time you (or I) have a palette with wrapped half pans which fit well in the wooden slot, you can leave most of the paper on it! 1) So, one could cut the top square of paper and foil, with a craft knife, revealing a square of paint (top view). 2) keep the square piece of paper to use for your swatch journal and tape down as usual. 3) Add some washi tape to hold paper together if it needs it underneath each pan So, all the paper and foil around the half pan, keeps it snug! 4) Blue tack to secure each pan into the slot. (you call it something else?) 5)My reasoning, is this, It is easier to write pigments on your swatch sheet if you need to.... than try to pack out a slot! Packing, magnets, glues, paddlepop sticks (you call this something else too, lol) to cut and pack, self adhesive strips, takes me an hour for 24 half pans. It has turned me off timber for all the fuss, but now, I think I could do it again! What can I say, I like them "tight like a tiger!" Ding! Thanks for your video, I wouldn't have figured this out in my own practice! Also your shirt has all the colours of the Supervision. :) *** My first palette! This idea, reminds me of my first Daler Rowney, in a black metal tin with 24 pans, from 1993, later added Cotman to it, and a few years later, W&N Professional. (Back then, early '90s, I think the series numbers with bigger numbers, eg series 5, meant they were richly pigmented, not as they are now, just an expensive pigment, rather these numbers were the artist quality, the Cotman student grade also only had series 1 and 2. ) QUESTION : Is this statement above that what you found from your first ones? (I could be wrong? But that is what I thought series meant then!) I remember the first W&N violet, wow packed a punch! It was a series 4. It had a cadmium orange and again it was like a series 5. Punchy! Touch it, and wow colour everywhere. I had to fold the wrappers, double, triple the paper and foils to pack the palette out so it was tight, even though it had the metal prongs, the length needs packing, When I recently filled it, (5th time) I re-swatched another palette card, it still has the original folded wrappers as packing from all the other times, colours and brands! The original batch codes would be on it! In the day, we had Prussian Blue, was so strong, Cadmiums, Cobalt teals, and all the general ones we have now. I said to my Mum recently, I would send her some new Schminckes, pans and tubes, with all the original names, from this time.....Mum doesn't care about the lightfastness of older pigments, but she says to me she isn't keen on all the " 'threnes, 'thrones, 'leynes and quins' ....." In kindred spirit, Eliza Tues 12th of July 2022 11:41pm Australia xx
The old cotman were better. The had series one and 2. The series 2 had cobalt blue and dad reds yellows and orange as well nickle yellow. The colors were less "goopy" if that makes since. 5here are more fillers now or may be a cheaper binder. They stepped down a touch in quality with every factory move. They are not bad but not as good as they once were in my opinion.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks so much, Lindsay, I thought this was the case with the Cotman, but I couldn't prove it! Have a wonderful Summer day in Maine xx Eliza
I looked up the Mermaid colors, as they looked interesting...but HOLY COW!!! $78 for 10 8ml. tubes??? I'll pass thanks! lol. There's always a gimmick, right?
Glazing, in watercolor, is when you go back over dry paint with wet paint. Sometimes the dry paint will reactivate and lift and it can create mud, if you're using two different colors or it does weird stuff like get shiny. Experimentationis the key, but Lindsay helps us out by doing some of it for us! 😁
@@PaintergirlCreations - Not a problem! We all have to start somewhere. I "restarted" my watercolor journey back in 2015 / 2016 and I'm still learning new things about watercolor. It's fascinating trying to figure out what combinations of paint, paper and weather (humidity) will make! That was my hardest lesson, learning how humidity affects the way watercolor paints play, or Won't, if you're fighting to keep your paper wet long enough for them to do what they're supposed to do. So don't get frustrated, just keep researching and trying new combinations. And asking questions! 👍🏻😁👍🏻

I would attach a piece of Yupo as a mixing palette. It can be replaced as it gets stained if needed.
Great idea!

I feel the same about art supplies. In a fire situation I'm more likely to grab my oils than my iPad. Lol
Aww thank you:)
thanks for reviewing this set. i've been interested in the bamboo kit, but am now a bit put off by all the packaging.
The acrylic lid feels like a missed opportunity to have maybe molded the inside into a few mixing wells... still not going to be worth $70 for me...
i put this in my cart before i watched this .its so tempting kind of exspensive
I think much of the cost is in the bamboo palette.
I know, why the dark cover?
I got this pb10 in a tube, because I was curious, it looks like pb1 indeed, and it darkens and dulls in just two months of sunlight exposure.
Thanks for the info! I wonder if the pigment is more lightfast in other mediums.
@@thefrugalcrafter it might be. I might still use it, as dulling is way better than fading in maintaining contrast of the work.
I got my fates wrong. I guess that one is next Monday. I schedule videos out pretty far in advance.
@@thefrugalcrafter no worries! Lol I'm eager for every video!
Fun video, thanks.
I’ve been eyeing this palette for awhile now, but the price has been putting me off so far.
Yeah, its a novelty. It's probably a fair price but I'd rather have less fancy packaging and a lower price. Cute tho.
I'm not happy with winsor &newtons recent choices:
1. Moved production of cotman paints and professional watercolor markers to China
2. Released "artists" oil pastels, soft pastels and colored pencils that are all made in China (looks private labled with high prices and no open stock availability)
@@Miastrong930 let me stress those are my opinions and observations but I have no connection with W&N to prove it.
So very pretty but a little pricey for watercolors I really don't need. I would love to have the palette so it'll go on the list in the hopes of a price drop, lol
Lindsay you crack me up.
Purple is tough in alcohol markers for some reason and they often shift color wet to dry.
I do love the look of the palette but I’m not sure I’m gonna spend that much money on it. As always though I enjoyed your review!
These remind me of the Marie’s watercolors. Extremely transparent
OMG! I love Magenta.
I’m always skeptical of wood watercolor palettes. Wood and water don’t typically get along well. I imagine it warping or splitting over time if you’re using it frequently.
I went to high school with a Kelly roy!
You got that right!
Maybe it'll be 1/2 price on Prime Day tomorrow. But $70 with the iffy pigments? Nah. LOL! Adorable palette though!
Oh maybe!
Hi there, maybe is a tipo and should be PR101? Red Iron oxide? Could not Find PR10 anywhere.
They have too many pinks and could use a decent burnt sienna, a bit strange I guess. Could the blue be like a Delft blue?
It's a bit more vibrant
Love them ALL.
Yup!
I can't wait til you get your new glasses lol
I have them now!
Like the palette but im on a non i buy art supplies till xmas its very very hard but i need to prevail and learn to live vicariously thru art reviews hauls to feed my art new supplies...lol enjoyed video..mikelle art mom🎨👩🎨✍
It will get easier as you discover your old favorite supplies again
Lindsay, are you saying “handprint” web site? I’d like to check it out, if you have the link? Thanks! Loving this bamboo palette!
Yes! www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterfs.html
Dear Lindsay,
Below, An idea, a QUESTION for you (half way down), and a short story about my first palette!
3) Add some washi tape to hold paper together if it needs it underneath each pan
So, all the paper and foil around the half pan, keeps it snug!
4) Blue tack to secure each pan into the slot. (you call it something else?)
5)My reasoning, is this, It is easier to write pigments on your swatch sheet if you need to....
than try to pack out a slot!
Packing, magnets, glues, paddlepop sticks (you call this something else too, lol) to cut and pack, self adhesive strips, takes me an hour for 24 half pans. It has turned me off timber for all the fuss, but now, I think I could do it again!
What can I say, I like them "tight like a tiger!"
Ding!
Thanks for your video, I wouldn't have figured this out in my own practice! Also your shirt has all the colours of the Supervision. :)

My first palette!
This idea, reminds me of my first Daler Rowney, in a black metal tin with 24 pans, from 1993, later added Cotman to it, and a few years later, W&N Professional.
(Back then, early '90s, I think the series numbers with bigger numbers, eg series 5, meant they were richly pigmented, not as they are now, just an expensive pigment, rather these numbers were the artist quality, the Cotman student grade also only had series 1 and 2. )
QUESTION : Is this statement above that what you found from your first ones?
(I could be wrong? But that is what I thought series meant then!)
I remember the first W&N violet, wow packed a punch! It was a series 4.
It had a cadmium orange and again it was like a series 5. Punchy!
Touch it, and wow colour everywhere.
I had to fold the wrappers, double, triple the paper and foils to pack the palette out so it was tight, even though it had the metal prongs, the length needs packing,
When I recently filled it, (5th time) I re-swatched another palette card, it still has the original folded wrappers as packing from all the other times, colours and brands!
The original batch codes would be on it! In the day, we had Prussian Blue, was so strong, Cadmiums, Cobalt teals, and all the general ones we have now.
I said to my Mum recently, I would send her some new Schminckes, pans and tubes, with all the original names, from this time.....Mum doesn't care about the lightfastness of older pigments, but she says to me she isn't keen on all the " 'threnes, 'thrones, 'leynes and quins' ....."
In kindred spirit,
Eliza

The old cotman were better. The had series one and 2. The series 2 had cobalt blue and dad reds yellows and orange as well nickle yellow. The colors were less "goopy" if that makes since. 5here are more fillers now or may be a cheaper binder. They stepped down a touch in quality with every factory move. They are not bad but not as good as they once were in my opinion.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks so much, Lindsay, I thought this was the case with the Cotman, but I couldn't prove it!
Have a wonderful Summer day in Maine xx

Yinmin blue is pb86.
Thanks!
What strong cool red do you recommend?
Quinn rose
I looked up the Mermaid colors, as they looked interesting...but HOLY COW!!! $78 for 10 8ml. tubes??? I'll pass thanks! lol. There's always a gimmick, right?

I almost got heart attack when you said ‘hi there’ 🥴 But overall a pleasure to watch your videos👌🏼
Total newbie question, but what exactly is glazing with watercolors?
Glazing, in watercolor, is when you go back over dry paint with wet paint. Sometimes the dry paint will reactivate and lift and it can create mud, if you're using two different colors or it does weird stuff like get shiny. Experimentationis the key, but Lindsay helps us out by doing some of it for us! 😁
@@teebee9735 Thank you for explaining!
@@teebee9735 I’ll definitely keep trying!
PSS: Oh and that website says that pbk 7 is sometimes called blue black. I thought that was interesting. Ok bye!!
The first magenta is pink. The berdau is magenta.
I'm standing 3 feet from my big TV to read those numbers. Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. Ok your shirt blurs the writing. Love your shirt. Tell me the brand. Don't worry. You won't see me wearing it clear from Montana. 😉

pretty expensive paint for a not very practical container! yeah, its a lovely box, but not usable for mixing
Hi
it is sooo pretty. magpie in me wants it so badly. reasonable person in me is going... STOP this nonsense right now, you already have more watercolors than you are actualy using... I may end up placating the magpie in me by splurging on a tube of potters pink instead. :P

I’ve been meaning to ask this for ages but keep forgetting: why do you draw a black line when you swatch?
To test opacity
