How to Make Your Wargaming Terrain Look Like Concrete - Great for Trench Crusade or Warhammer 40K

- In this video I'll show how to create an awesome concrete texture for your 3D prints and terrain. These pieces are for the giant Trench Crusade modular terrain game board I am creating and I wanted some concrete to break up the mud. This process is extremely easy to follow and can be achieved in just minutes to amazing results. You don't even have to sand your 3D print these textures are applied to prints right off of the bed. These pieces are for my full scale gaint Trench Crusade game board but they can be used on a varitey of different projects. Make sure to always take proper safety when crafting by wearing gloves and a respirator.

Genuinely this is the best concrete/stone type technique I've ever seen def gonna use it for my future terrain projects!
Thank you very much! Have fun 👍
This is a great quick and useful start to hide all those pesky layer lines.
@@blizatrex Definitely! And hopefully my additional washes will add even more life to them in the part 2 video 👍
What a fantastic way to hide layer line in 3D Printing can’t wait to try this technique out!!
@@blackmarketoutpost have fun! I just painted up a bunch of additional prints this morning to add to the board 👍
Building a rock solid foundation for your new channel! Waka waka waka!
🤦♂️😂😂 thanks Phil! 🙌
Very nice mate ✨✨
Thank you very much! 🙌
Bro thats incredible, i think you just unlocked a god tier technique
Thanks! Glad you like it 👍
This is utterly amazing! Thank you so much for this tutorial!
Glad you like it!
Great technique! Looks like you are going to have an amazing Trench Crusade board when you finish all the pieces and get all the scatter painted. Looking forward to it!
Thank you very much! I’ve still got a long way to go but I’m excited to add even more elements to the board. I’m now working with diceverse who created the bunker to bring some other terrain pieces to life 👍
I've been struggling with where to start on my board, but this series is amazing.
Thank you! And much more is in the works 👍
Dang man, the timing on this is perfect. I was looking for some sort of stone or stucco look for a project and this is exactly what I needed. This new channel is gonna be awesome thanks.
Fantastic!! Glad I could help! 🙌🙌
Nice work. Thanks for the safety advice
Thank you, and you’re welcome 👍
You know I am going to personally hold you and BMC personally responsible for getting me into Trench Crusade because of these videos. Much obliged! 👍
Ha! Thank you and have fun in the Trenches 👍
Never seen this technique used before on terrain looks really nice!
Thank you! 👍
The grout makes the prints look amazing!!!
And this is even before I add some washes for weathering 👍
@ which is crazy!!! They don’t need the washes ☺️☺️☺️
This is a great idea thanks 👍
You’re welcome! 👍
This is a gamechanger
Glad I could help inspire!
Great video!
Thank you!
I don't make stuff like this, usually. My builds are mostly larger things. But I have been asked to make some terrain pieces on occasion and I think you just ramped up my game there. Plus I will be passing along both your channel and your excellent tips to my younger nerds. Thanks, Steve!
So many of my costuming painting techniques came from years of art school and miniature painting. It’s great that I can share both types of content with similar communities 👍
This looks very effective. Thank you for putting this together!
Glad it was helpful!
Dude that looks amazing
Thank you very much!
good stuff, mate, love your miniature terrain content ;)
Thank you! More to come 👍
That's looking so good! Definitely will have to try out the technique out 👍 Seems perfect for hiding layer lines without using techniques and products that melt somehow the surface. Seems to keep the sharpness of the pieces and details very well :)
Thanks! And yeah as long as you don’t over saturate the area with additional grout the details come through pretty good. I’m going to be working on your cross this week as well and adding some additional details to it 👍
@SKSHobbyWorkshop Yeah the ruin piece with more details looked really nice! Sometimes with 3d printed terrain it can show a bit with the layers and so on, but this texturing hides it nicely and also helps to speed up the process of terrain making quite a bit as it gets painted at the same time. :)
Ooh yay! Cannot wait! That was actually my idea, that it also works great as a base and I've been waiting to see people add some pipes/cabling/antennas or similar to it. Didn't originally sculpt them in, as shapes kike that can look a bit off when printed on small scale.
Great effect! Thx.
Thank you! And You’re welcome 👍
Love it
Thank you! 🙌
Good timing for this video. Thank you
You’re welcome! 👍
I wasn't planning a new Necromunda table this year.. but now I am. 🙄
Awesome! and I have to look into necromunda at some point 👍
I wonder what oil or coffee would do to these. Maybe a wash of thinned green acrylic paint for mold/lichen.
That's what I'm doing to mine once all of the concrete pieces are complete to give it some additional color. Like I mentioned in the video at this point the grout mix will still accept liquids so I'm going to add some ink and acrylic washes 👍
Great effect! Tile grout is very useful, but not all of us are set up to use it, any alternatives you're aware of that are non-toxic? I craft on my dining room table. I was thinking of trying baking soda but would welcome any advice.
Golden brand pumice is a modeling paste that can be added for additional texture. Go to my prop UA-cam and check out the pyramid head helmet I made 👍
@@SKSHobbyWorkshop Thanks
Wy do you use distild water insted of regular tap water ?
Because it has no additives or chemicals that might mess with any of the products I’m applying. And our water in the Midwest is hard lots of minerals. Distilled water is cheap and I always use it when painting minis too because it’s better for brush bristles
I feel like this would work with a spackle (what we call filler in the UK) and PVA mix? I’ve done that on MDF terrain and I reckon it’ll work on 3D prints if it’s primed first like you say?
@@mjhsinclair maybe, most spackle I’ve tried, at least here in the US, has no grit to it and is prone to shrinkage depending on application. But if you added the fine sand and added it in several light coats on top of the etching primer it might work.
So would you seal this with a matte spray?
I guess you could if you wanted to, but it’s pretty durable as is. Also you want to watch sealers because they can change the color of the finished piece by darkening the material.
LETS GO
🙌🙌
0:25 "3d prints right off the build plate. No sanding, no hand painting" immeadiately gaps fills, sands and paints on grout mixture by hand and sands some more.... just givin ya a hard time.. They look awesome!
@SkallagrimGrimkjells 😆🙌 guess I should have specified more you don’t need to sand any of the print lines before adding the mixture, and this is without hand painting additional acrylics or ink washes onto the surface 👍
Rock solid video! Though… “minimal” is a loose term 🫠
Thanks! and True but I guess I was figuring minimal and easier to paint up 5-10 terrain pieces this way in an hour vs hand painting all of colors and textures.
