Chronic Diarrhea On Carnivore Diet? Excess Bile, FXR & Inflammation

  • Do you experience chronic diarrhea on a carnivore diet? Have you stuck at it through the "adaptation" period, yet are still unable to digest fat very well?
Does your digestion improve after eating some rice, fruit, or vegetables?
Have you tried ox bile, digestive enzymes, and every other method, yet have not found any relief?
Well, you may have an issue with recycling bile acids. Rather than not having enough bile, you may actually have TOO MUCH bile.
In this video, I explain the possible mechanisms underlying a condition called primary bile acid malabsorption/diarrhea, and look at some of the factors which may be involved in this.

Is it dangerous to try carnivore (Lion Diet) with butter and heavy cream if you have a family history of primary sclerosing cholangitis? The video mentioning duademum and bile is giving me the willies. My Dad died waiting for a liver transplant in 1987. He had ulcerative colitis and PSC. I am trying this for mental health and weight loss.

I was Dx'd with IBS when I was in my 20's (now 66) and I have long given up on trying to find a doc (kept telling me it was in my head, and I kept asking why it was coming out my ass) that has a clue about a solution. Went keto in June of 21', have been carnivore since June 22' have lost ~70 lbs in this process, but my GERD (better) and IBS have never resolved. This just might explain why I have lived 40+ years with gut issues. I have also noticed that within 12-24 hours of a GERD event, I have watery diarrhea. The rectal area becomes sore and inflamed and the rectum bleeds a bit when I wipe which indicates to me a high acid content inflaming/burning the skin.
Glad I found this, good information, Thank You

@@OrthodoxInquirer I've heard several people with ulcerative colitis said "lion" helped them....Lion and carnivore are different....only beef water and salt on the Lion, just in case you didn't know. Honestly after what I've experienced with it, I'd say definitely give it ago and see how you feel in 3 months. I've been healing now for 2 yrs on lion then carnivore, about a year each. Just so you know I have no gallbladder. You just can't consume a ton of fat all at once. Start slow, like a tablespoon and see how you do. If after a week no issue add another one. Your liver will learn to make more bile to handle the fat your consuming. Just need to go slow so it can adjust it take time. I'd also recommend having your B1 checked or just take a professional grade B1. Just my experience, and Elliot knows what he talking about. Happy New year and good luck!!

I’ve been doing carnivore for years and the diarrhea has never stopped. I recently started psyllium husk 3tsp a day and it stopped the diarrhea - although the stool still feels a bit acidic. So happy. I know how to cure it- it just add plants but I don’t want to because the carnivore diet cures my binge eating disorder. Thanks for this video.

Watching this two years later and thank God I watched it all the way through. I felt my diarrhea had something to do with my body not producing enough bile because the diarrhea only decreased some when I took digestive enzymes (double and triple the dose). But by evening, the diarrhea would be back. His video talks about the opposite: People producing too much bile and having bile malabsorption resulting in diarrhea. He said these people didn't respond to taking digestive enzymes but I did...for a little while. So I started to click off, but so glad I didn't. Near the end if the video, he talks about a few vitamin deficiencies that inhibit the body's ability synthesize bile. He mentioned A, C, and D. I took a multivitamin containing these vitamins yesterday. Yesterday afternoon and today, I have not had diarrhea. My appetite has returned. I don't feel sick to my stomach anymore and I'm not waking up in the night with painful griping, chills and sweats...and diarrhea. Very grateful for this info.

You saved me!! After a year fully carnivore adapted with bi issues, i started to have chronic diarrhea. Around 5 months ago I decided to increase the protein intake and stop adding additional fat like butter to my meals; within some time I became constipated and was having BM every 10 days, my hormones were messed up, now I know why: liver was not flushing waste. I decided to supplement magnesium and digestive enzymes with ox bile and HCl acid; then I went from constipated to chronic diarrhea that couldn't stop. I was having abdominal rumbling all night and then diarrhea every morning at wake up. I was also having a weird bad taste at wake up that now I know I could be bile reflux. After watching your video I purchased a supplement that contains some of the herbs you mentioned. It's called liver cleanse from Thorne Labs and started to see results immediately after taking the supplement. I have been talking 1 cap x 3 times a day. Once in colon your body tries washing it out by flooding colon with water. Symptom is diarrhea soon after meals. Try eating white rice for a few meals with other low fat protein.

So, do you have to keep taking it or did it permanently fix you? Can you tell me which product and more information. I had considered milk thistle thinking it might module the liver or something.I tried SIBO herbs and they did nothing. In me I think it is autoimmune though. I got dry eyes and diarrhea and digestive problems at the same time, and I have small fiber polyneuropathy. I think the diarrhea from fat is due to lack of peristalsis. I'm also reading that milk thistle stimulates peristalsis. If the intestines are not moving then they don't grip properly and food flies through. But, with fiber it has something to grip onto with the bulk. But, on a pure carnivore diet and with fat that is going to fly through if the peristalsis is not working properly. If the fat flies through undigested it will make you weak due to lack of energy and when it gets to the large intestines it will cause diarhea. I almost did the camera pill once, maybe I should still do that soon.

I basically had no control over timing or being able to hold it. Eating fruits and veggies and moderate healthy carbs with plenty of fiber seems to fix this in about one day. Removing these, I return to the same issues. I don't feel as good otherwise eating the fruit, veggies, and carbs - but it makes my digestion completely normal. I am very interested to try some of the herbs to see if that can help at all. I am generally much happier eating a carnivore diet - digestion being the only thing I did not like.

I've been on the Carnivore diet for most of this time and have had very fatty stool for about five months and have been concerned about gallbladder problems and/or an inflamed pancreas as in Stettorrah although I do not have most of the obvious disease symptoms associated with these organs.
I never considered that I might have an overactive gallbladder because I bought that when someone is a vegan for a long time, their gallbladder becomes underactive. plus I THINK I heard that excess fiber can block the bile and/or pancreatic ducts.
I've been on a very low fiber, low anti nutrient SCD diet for a few weeks and I have not noticed any obvious benefits yet.
Your work is greatly appreciated and that includes the other You Tube health channel you're on.

I am on a low fiber diet, but body works more efficiently with carbs than ketosis, as healing as it is, it is not meant to be a permanent thing and except for maybe the Masai and the Inuit, all indigenous peoples had a decent amount of carbs (fermented and/or pre-digested) in their diets.
If you have been following the current psychological operation, Covid is not a virus, but the real cases that exist. are likely caused by the pollution that fracking production and refinement causes.
Masks are ineffectual and dangerous as are hand sanitizers and the media and all complicit "health" officials are cowards, liars, murderers and traitors to humanity.
Best of luck to you and thanks for asking.

Thanks a lot for your video! I’ve been on carnivore for just over 4 months and after entering ketosis, I have been experiencing what seems to be bile acid malabsorption. I tried ox bile, different digestive enzymes, and also all of the supplements you suggested with no improvement to normalize my stool. From your video you mentioned that when these patients reintroduce plant fiber into their diet, their stool normalizes.. So I specifically tried psyllium, and as suggested this plant fiber seems to normalize my stool.

I might try the same thing with HCL and vitamin C. I tried carnivore in the past for almost 6 weeks and just had diarrhea the whole time. I didn't feel bad but I tried re-introducing veg and fruits and other fibrous sources and diarrhea went away within the next day even though I had nothing but diarrhea for almost 6 weeks straight. I also have lots of hard-to-pinpoint allergic reactions like puffy eyes, sneezing, and occasionally hives on skin. Had allergy tests for it and I don't seem to test particularly high on anything (I do have mild pet and dust mite allergies, but my reactions always seemed more severe). Maybe I also have some sort of issue with histamines since I also have something which seems like acid reflux except it's like every now and then, once every few weeks, and occurs in ways that I can never quite pinpoint.

Very interesting. This is the opposite of what I thought - I thought it was lack of bile acids meaning undigested fats were getting into the colon. I do definitely have something wrong with my ability to digest fats - a high fat meal gives me liquid diarrhoea, and this is generally prevented if I eat vegetables at the same time.

I hope this works, I’ve went on keto or close to carnivore multiple times and I always have this issue. You mentioned several words that peaked my interest: I have Crohn’s and in my last two colonoscopies the report said my ileum was inflamed. I know I have a very hard time getting enough Vitamin D but thru a lot of labs, I have been able to settle on a daily dose that is about 2.5 times normal. My Vitamin D levels in my blood are normal at that level. My plan: (1)increase Vitamin C first (I will continue this thru out), (2) increase vitamin A (back off on this if not affective), (3) start taking the herbal remedies you mentioned… 1by1. If this resolves, then this cure may very well improve my Crohn’s overall. BTW I take Humira 1per 2 weeks. Fingers crossed! Thanks

The video is amazing - explains this problem with science and clear research. I now have a grip on why this is happening with me on the carnivore diet. I have already been eating fruits along with meat so that I have electrolytes and vitamin C, but I heard thar vitamin C was only really necessary for carbohydrate production, so I thought maybe the acidity from the fruits was causing my diarrhea. I now understand that it was actually the liver/gallbladder secretion thing. I have been taking berberine and milk thistle, seems to be helping a little? Not really sure yet. Will check back in. I had awful IBD to the point of I couldn't even finish a meal sometimes without running to the bathroom before starting keto. Keto with leafy greens completely fixed my gut bacteria and it was incredible to actually "trust a fart." Which was something I hadn't been able to do for nearly a decade... If you know, you know! Since starting carnivore 5-6 months ago, the diarrhea has returned roughly every day or two on average. Albeit, not nearly as severe as before starting keto, but still enough to seek some answers and led me to finding your video.
The bile acid theory definitely seems to line up with my issues currently. I think for folks like me, who aren't affected by plant toxins, a small amount of fiber from veggies on a ketovore-type diet is really what'll lead to homeostasis of my gut biome. Only time will tell, but it was nice having solid stools every BM on keto. I truly think a meat heavy keto with a little vegetable fiber will do the trick! My fingers are crossed and I'll try to remember to report back after a few months of reintegrating leafy greens and potentially some broccoli and cauliflower to let you all know what comes of it.

Couldn’t it be that the body is doing this on purpose? People are saying that they had this problem for months when starting carnivore but eventually it went away. I’m wondering if maybe before carnivore the liver is inflamed and the bile is stagnent. Carnivore diet could be increasing bile acid synthesis and conjugation (taurine and glycine) and enabling the body to begin excreting toxins in phase III detoxification. So FXR could be downregulated for a time as a way for the body to make more bile and excrete more toxins.

This was very enlightening. I was diagnosed at the age of 24 with PSC. Then at the age of 39 with IBD Crohn (they weren't sure in the lab 100% as it was hard to diagnose). So they gave me and meds for Crohn Morbus and For Crohn Collitis aka Collitis Ulcerative. The latter works but I hate taking meds. So six weeks ago i started carnivore. First week went great and then from third week on huge pain in small intestines and diarrhea mixed with constipation. I didn't get it as it should be getting better. Yes I drink enough and have my electrolytes etc. So again took mesalazine meds which calmed things down as far as pain goes. But the mixed diarrhey still occurs once a week. I added hinch of veggies which helps a bit. Now hearing this video i will try your tips.
Maybe there are others with my disease profile that went on carnivore and felt like things are getting worse rather than better. Maybe this is the cause as it is a complicated combination of PSC and Crohn.

I’ve been ketovore for 6 months, carnivore (Saladino style-fruit and animal base) for 2-3 weeks. I’ve recently had diarrhea for the last week. It seems it doesn’t matter what I eat. Do you think berberine would be useful?

I have Microscopic Colitis and also bile acid malabsorption. I’m currently experimenting with the carnivore diet and having an increase of loose stools. I already take Cholestyramine which helps but not enough. Would you recommend increasing the dosage or adding in berberine and milk thistle? Great video, by the way.

Interesting...mainly as a reminder of the beneficial effects of diversity in our diet. Been carnivore for 16 months , but still drink coffee
with heavy cream each morning. I've gone through several periods of diarrhea. Over the holidays introduced blueberries and noticed
my stools were noticeably less loose.I may begin introducing beets and beet greens back in my diet and milk thistle is easy to get in
various forms. The concept of toxicity of plant oxalates and lectins is relevant but I'm convinced the answer to inflammation control
lies in moderation and self awareness...Too much of anything can be harmful.

Does histamine play a role in the problem? I am as you described in the open of this vid. Massive gas and diarrhea after eating. Gas starts in less than ten minutes following eating. I see bile in the toilet. Only thing I found to slow it down is Beano and it only works a couple days and then quits. Been like this everyday for 5 weeks. I will try a couple things mentioned but hope you have new info and regarding histamine. Thanks

EO’s more recent videos discuss oxalate dumping as another reason for diarrhea at any point during the carnivore diet. Often, the oxalate dumping happens later (or even earlier before even starting any elimination diet, Sally has given that a different name), like with me, 9 months in, chronic diarrhea for 2 months. I’m mitigating by eating low ox foods like black tea, cocoa and cinnamon but I’m also trying herbs, probiotics, fibers, lemon juice. There could be multiple issues involved. The circadian rhythm piece is fascinating and not to be ignored. Our light diet is everything. Look into quantum biology.
So many commenters are describing classic oxalate dumping symptoms.
Update: diarrhea stopped, yay, plus starting B1 protocol, cutting back on B1-depleting tannins in tea and coffee and cocoa.
    Cheers.

I always learn so much from your videos. Thank you for helping us all to be encouraged to live healthier lives. I was recently diagnosed with Microscopic Colitis. I was considering the carnivore diet since my food choices are limited. I also have high mold exposure (ochratoxin), high oxalate, idiopathic nephropathy, high blood pressure, and histamine intolerance. I seem to be having good results taking psyllium husk capsules to stop my diarrhea. I was wondering if trying carnivore would help me heal some of these challenges or give me more diarrhea? I just joined a support group for new carnivore beginners, and they all seem to think I would do well and heal all my problems. I'm not a fan of too much fat since I also have trouble digesting it. Enzymes help me some. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Two years later, it sounds like what you were experiencing is the same as what I have been going through! Had the colonoscopy also (didn't have this inflammation or diarrhea before carnivore, just an onset of constipation). Can't do fat as well, I have been eating a lot of grains mainly for years to "fill up." Buckwheat cereal, and even organic chips to fill up.
      How are you doing?

@joen.8364 Hi, it's two years later, already --- 6.27.23. I am doing rather well, thank you. I did go carnivore, well mostly, not entirely. I supplemented with a tiny amount of white jasmine rice. I continued using physillum fiber till I discovered Heather's acacia fiber was better for me. My dear daughter learned how to make a special type of yogurt for me. Each time she made it - she used a different strain of probiotics. This was my good fat. I couldn't seem to get enough of it. After six months of this eating style, my colitis seems to be gone. I'm so relieved. I hope you have found something to help you.

Thank you for your amazing and very informative channel. I am on strict carnivore for 6 months now combined with OMAD. It helped with some of my gut issues (bloating and gassiness permanently disappeared) and my energy and mental clarity levels went up considerably, I also lost some weight. Currently I am experiencing a bad candida flare up with some gut cramping, general pain throughout my body and discharge. I wonder whether it could be caused by my new cardio yoga routine, which might have accelerated a detox and maybe oxalate dumping process. Or can it come from my partner who is still on a high carb diet? On my carnivore journey I had issues with unexpected diarrhea and very soft, sticky stool in general. Listening to your videos I figured that it could be related to bile acid reabsorption and oxalate dumping as well. Now I am taking milk thistle, pro and prebiotics and calcium daily for about a month, and I also eat two squares of 100% chocolate or drink a cup of black or white tea every other day, in case my issues are related to oxalate dumping. I haven't had diarrhea for a while, but my stool is still quite soft and sticky and I have symptoms of yeast infection as well. I eat a little raw cheese (Comté) every day to help with my stool, I eat raw butter as well, and occasionally some double cream with my hot drinks, but apart from that I only eat fatty meat. I still drink 1 or 2 espressos a day, because I love the taste, and I don't know how to socialize without. Can all of my symptoms be blamed on coffee or dairy? I thought cheese actually helps with diarrhea and loose stool. I was thinking of booking a session with a carnivore health coach. Many thanks for any advise or insight :).

I thought it was weird-how can I have this while taking in no fiber. THIS explains from a doctor's standpoint, even better than Dr Ken Berry and that is not easy to do. I didn't want vegetables because of carbs but you are correct, the fiber absorbs them.
I will try vegetables (keto of course) and see what happens.
