So far, the two Nordic countries have been wary of antagonising their giant nuclear-armed neighbour, Russia. Russia has warned of "a military technical response", including deployment of nukes in the Baltics, if Sweden and Finland join the NATO. NATO’s Nordic expansion a boon or bane for Europe? My comment is entirely from a neutral standpoint. I'm just a bystander here and this is how things are looking right now. This has become unsolvable for Russia now. Putin is being humiliated by the west and maybe he's dying from some disease. He might have already foreseen a future threat to Russia from NATO and may not trust his successor to deal with this 5-10 years later when he's gone. Now there are only 2 options left. Anyone can guess what they are. Either Russia looses or the entire west and Russia both lose everything. The situation in Ukraine was enough to prove that Russia will never be stupid enough to invade a country like Finland. Humiliating any country without such destructive capabilities would've forced them to either behave or suffer. But you've all either forgotten what Russia is capable of or have chosen to ignore and keep humilitaing them. I don't know what he's going to do for sure but I don't think the NATO countries know it for sure either. They've played this gamble just to rub it in Putin's face. This might completely backfire and end up very very badly for all of NATO and Russia.
I am not even sure if Russia can spare any troops for Finland. Yes, they did assign some heavy weapons in Finnish direction but Finnish farmers immediately deployed their tractors in close proximity...hungry...waiting...
We are peaceful countries, but don't test our patience. Then Russia you will face what you did last time with the Finns, and when it comes to my country, the viking will surely be awakened again.

Swedish weapon systems are already built to NATO interoperability standards. Journalists pump out garbage non-stop.
They have to fit NATO specifications ie. use NATO ammunition, communicate with NATO networks if required, etcetra. They can use their own kit.

Nobody wants the end of Russia. Russia is part of European history with strong economic and cultural ties. Whether we want or not we must live with them here in Europe. A stronger defensive NATO is a good way to show them that we are not afraid, but also we want to live in peace.

Where do you get this nonsense Sweden may be forced to buy from NATO rather than its own defense industry? Sweden produces tons of military hardware FOR NATO countries it is all 100% compatible, in fact NATO countries would be even more likely to buy from Sweden if it was a NATO member.

Sweden doesn't have to use NATO weapons. They can just adjust their weapons to meet NATO standards while still maintaining their own military hardware.

Finland was NOT defeated in WW2. There was a cease fire after Russia’s second attempt. Russia was slaughtered in the first Winter War. Then the battle restarted with the Continuation War.
Exactly. The USSR was fought to a standstill twice. Finland was forced to give up like 10% of territory, but they didn't make us their communist slaves. That's all that matters.
They were defeated they lost over 13% of their country . They slaughtered Russians yes . Just like the Ukrainians are . But Russia still won the war and took Finnish land forever . How can you say that’s not a defeat losing that much of your territories lol
@@DelaDoesWork We kept our independence - that's all that matters. After all, it was a fight between (at that time) a country of approx. 4 million vs. the USSR with 150 million+. I think we did a good job of protecting our country.

@@DelaDoesWork, there is a difference between a defeat and a total defeat. Finland was defeated by the Soviet Union twice during the WW2. However, the three Baltic countries were totally defeated, although and they even didn't resist the Red army, and had to stand the Russian occupation for 46 years after the WW2. During that time Finland could get ahead strongly, the Baltics had it much more difficult.
We Finns fought against the Red army very effectively and that changed the opinion of Stalin. He was very much against us in 1939, but since 1945 he was pretty neutral. He didn't try to force socialism to Finland anymore, but accepted the status quo. The Americans had a positive image about "Uncle-Joe" and Stalin indeed was a bit like that toward Finland after 1944. But only to Finland, not to Baltic countries nor other countries, which the Red army had occupied. Obviously Stalin had started to respect us. He didn't respect many people.
This has been in the works for a long time now. Finland's purchase of 80+ F-35s gave it away, so welcome to NATO.

U.S. Defense policy has been subject to unbelievably irrational swings under different administrations, from imposing social policy on third countries, to near isolationism, to "democratic nation-building." Maybe one day, the United States will find a sustainable middle ground, where it defends its interests and allies, but learns to say "no" when it is presented with the opportunity to sort out the likes of Somalia. And next time something like a Yugoslavian civil war and genocide presents itself, it should be the responsibility of the European members of NATO to take the lead on cleaning out their own house. The United States should save its defense capabilities for when they are needed and there is no alternative. Not only can the U.S. military not do it all, it is not desirable that it should try.
Yes, it has been talked about for the past 20 years or so. Though last time I checked it was 64 planes, same as the previous F-18s in the 1990´s. I guess it just depends on what Sako shows as it's AR-10 based rifle if it fills the militarys requirements to be accepted or will they look for another replacement. They have until the 30s about to figure things out.

Swedish defence industry provides weapons to NATO already. AT4, Garl Gustaf, Radar systems to many nations in NATO, USA included, CV 90 in use by 11 NATO nations. Swedish defence industry thinks this opens up for more export to other NATO nations. All Swedish weapons are compatible with NATO standards so no Sweden do not think NATO membership will harm Swedens defence industry.

Ever since Putin was a KGB liason officer working in East Germany in the 1970s, he has sought to disorganize the western allies and to promote terrorist attacks against western European countries and US targets in those countries. The only way to restrain an opportunistic bully like Putin is to confront him with overwhelming defensive strength along his whole western border. Anything less is just an invitation to him to exploit a perceived weakness in Europe's defenses.

Despite what is being said publicly by Putin and western heads of state, there is one aspect in SE and FI joining NATO that will actually hurt Russia a little bit. That is their ability (imagined or otherwise) to bully their neighbours. That is probably why Putin does not want to see NATO expand. The actual policies of Ukraine to weed out corruption was like poison to Putin, as he depends on corruption in his own country and elsewhere to have any power.
