Faking The Bark! - Wood Turning
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 січ 2022
- This was originally a full round log of Black Cherry. This is the third and final piece I got from it. It's also my favorite of all three. I did have to do a lot of work to make this a complete live edge bowl and that is the focus of this video. Finished in shellac.

You know I love you guys because I've told you before so I won't go into that. You also know I've been sick so I won't go into that, either. I can only tell you, I'm still sick and my videos will be sporadic. PLEASE, not looking for sympathy. I hope to be back and I expect to be back. When is the big question and I do not know the answer. Let's just enjoy each others company when we can.
Phil
And enjoyed your company I did... thanks Phil
I will keep you in my prayers for a speedy recovery and hope you get back to doing your videos. I really enjoy watching your amazing talent.
Always enjoy your company. 💜💜💜
Was so excited to see you posted a new video. Please, please, PLEASE don't go overboard with your craft. The bowl was beautiful to say the least. You work miracles with simple woods. We enjoyed watching you and all you did and you explaining things as you go. Take your time and get better soon our friend. Stay safe and relax.
I do hope and pray for steady and full recovery for you, Phil!
Thanks for the video.
I think I can speak for everyone in saying we all enjoy your videos when they come. Get well Phil! Thanks for sharing.👍🏻👍🏻
😊
I'm glad it was fun for you making the bowl, Phil, because it sure was fun watching you do it. 100 years old and still beautiful. Thank you to Jay for sending and you for sharing. Keep well and see you soon.
😊
I realize times are tough when our health is at risk, I was in my local emergency ward when told a helicopter was coming to take me to a specialty hospital & did I want a priest to travel with me. That was 2 years ago, friends & turning got me through some tough times & I hope the same for you!
😊
I like how you explain how, what, and why you do each step. You provide us an actual learning experience, rather than the guys who don't say a word, and just leave you to figure it out on your own.
I'm sincerely glad you like that, thank you! 😊
Phil , its really great to see you back even if it is sporadic . We really miss you . You did a great job of piecing that bark back on this beautiful Black Cherry bowl . It must be a real treat to turn something that is so old .
😊
Love watching your videos Phil. Glad you were feeling up to turning. Sometimes our hobbies are the best therapy. Take care ❤ we want to watch you forever.
😊
Great to see you back again, Phil. I hope and pray that whatever ails you is resolved without permanent consequences. I look for your videos every day. They are informative and entertaining. A great way to start my day! Keep them coming as well as you can.
😊
Number 1 turner Phil. As always entertaining and natural wood turning at it’s best. There is no one even close to your skill and ability. Stay safe and looking forward to your next project
Wow, thank you, David! 😊
THANK YOU PHIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...Feels sooo good to hear your voice again. Phil you could turn dirt and I would still watch it 5 times (wait a minute, you have turned dirt before & it was GREAT).....Thursday afternoon at Phil's is just right by me. Please keep doing what you do for as long as you feel like doing it. Thank You Jay from Tennessee. Nice Black Cherry turning Phil, you never disappoint, your show is always spot on...Until next time Phil, again THANK YOU...TM
LOL! And you supplied that dirt, Tuffy! Thanks for watching and for the much needed chuckle! 😊
So nice to hear that voice again. Even my husband who overhears the videos I play remarked he had missed you. Take care.
Haha, thank you so much, Jeanette! 😊
We love you Phil. Do what you can, when you feel like it. We will be here.
😊
Grateful to you for showing the hidden beauty to a piece of wood and keeping the nature intact. I can only desire to be able to have the insight of your ability. Thank You so very much for your posts.
Thank you very much, Don! 😀
Greetings from Humboldt County Ca.
Obvious to you is a revaluation to me, never boring. Your channel has taught me about 80% of what I use.
Know you are not looking for sympathy.. how about care, compassion, concern? You are very special to a lot of people who consider you a friend.
Very kind of you, Bob, thank you! 😊
Another beautiful piece of art.
I believe in the power of prayers, have a speedy recovery, strength and peace 🙏♥️
😊
Wow. A really nice treat! My Thursday evening “Phil Fix”...well, that little piece of cherry came from a small tree that was on the edge of a soybean/corn/tobacco field in northwest Sumner County, Tennessee. The old tree got diseased and we had to cut it. You’ve turned a couple of the other pieces, but this time you’ve outdone yourself. Glad to see the old tree is making so many folks happy. And you know that piece comes with a warranty. Thanks for making me, and many others, smile tonight.
Thanks for the background info on the Cherry, Jay, I love knowing the history of a piece. This is definitely my favorite of the three pieces I got from that original log. 😊
Missed you, Phil. Take care of yourself. Loved the last vid where you went above and beyond. It didn't surprise me, I knew you were that kind of guy. Love ya, Phil! Thanx Steve
😊
More than 10 comments every hour since your return. This isn't sympathy Phil, this is respect for a craftsman. May you recover quickly.
😊
and that's what I like about your videos, you like to keep it as natural as possible. you always maintain the character of the tree, and the beauty of the wood..
😊
Thank you for continuing our education. Wishing you wellness.
😊
Great to see you back at the lathe Phil. Your comments about the glued on bark made me smile. Reminded me of a comedy sketch of someone trying to play piano. He was told "you've hit all the right notes, just not in the right order😊.
LOL!
The master is back fantastic to see you on your lathe again Phil.listening to you explaining wot you are doing makes my day. I’ve learned so much from you and it makes my wood turning so much easier. Stay well my friend 👍👍👍😊😊😊♥️
😊
A speedy recovery to you .. you're in my prayers. Healing light sent your way .. 🙏
Thank you so much! 😊
Youpie! My favourite turner posted a video.
I love the stops, so we can see where the piece is at.
Phil, your comments on what you observe as you turn, let's us hear what you are thinking and where the piece is taking you; that is what makes us feel as though we are there with you, helping to make the piece.
Glad for the tip on not overdoing it with the CA-glue.
I giggled at the "Funnel Club" comment.
Thanks, Phil, for the tip on how to prevent piercing through the bottom of the bowl, by positioning the end of the rest close to the inner surface of the bowl; smiled again when you added "You just have to remember to l o o k ! " You must have observed a teacher closely (or been one) during your life because you are a natural teacher.
It's pretty cold in Quebec; - 22C on Thursday.
Hope your weather out West does not throw you too many curves during the remaining weeks of winter. I love each season.
Happy Valentine's Day in advance, in case the next turning comes after the 14th.
Glad you are doing what you need to, to heal; my friend says "homemade soup and meat for healing; ferget the bread, pasta and desserts". ;) Love ya too, man! Take cake.
Thank you for your delightful comment, Red Leaf! 😊
Phil, I'm sending lots of prayers for you to feel better and get well. I love watching you turn and look forward to your next video!
Thank you, Carol! 😊
Really happy to see you turning again bud. Your work has inspired so many people to try things beyond the typical bowl blanks sold at craft stores.
😊
Always enjoy watching your turnings. All the cherry bowls are my favorites. Color of the wood and that bark, wow. Thanks again Phil.
😊
When Phil's in his workshop, all's right with the world.
When he's not, I worry. But don't rush to be back. Take all the time you need to get well. It's nice know the man behind the bowl gouge. Thanks for posting the video of yourself from when you worked at the tax office.
Thank you for watching my videos, Vincent! 😊
It's always make happy whenever a video pops up. Hope you are getting better. Do not over do it. Praying for you
😊
Absolutely! Will watch when available and pray for you in between. Thank you for the videos you do post. Always great to watch. Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening!
😊
You are my favorite wood turner on youtube. I started turning about a year ago and love it. Like you I like to keep the wood as natural as I can. Can't wait to see more video's. Get well soon.
😊
So good to see you turning. And such a lovely piece. Being a nurse I’ve been worried about your health. Take care of yourself. Xx
😊
Thanks Phil, good to have you back. I hope you continue to improve and get back into full time action! We miss ya.
😊
Phil, so good to see you back! Even if it will only be sporadic for awhile. Nice job, I do love live edge bowls, this one is very nice. Keep smiling and keep a positive mental attitude, that really helps!!
😊
With that being said, we love your work and are excited to see it every time you post something new. I could only hope to do turnings that are even close to what you do as continue to learn from you.
Still praying for your health.
Thanks and be well!
😊
Phil.. wonderful to see you back creating these beautiful pieces..
😊
Well done Phil 👏. I appreciate your dedication to continue with sharing videos. Take care of yourself Phil and don't over work yourself. We all love your videos and the banter.
😊
Take it slow man, we're here for you. No need to push it.
😊
It's great that you feel well enough to get out in the workshop and even better that you allowed us to join you. Lovely looking bowl and a couple of tips thrown in for good measure, how good is that. Keep safe and get well, we all miss you. Geoff
Thanks so much, Geoff! 😊
Oh thank goodness Phil is back and gave us another awesome turning!!
😊
So happy you are feeling well enough to do your beautiful work again...thank you for sharing once again. ❤️😊🙏🏼
😊
Take care of yourself first but never give up doing what you enjoy. It’s part of healing too. Beautiful bowl. I like chunky bowls.
Me too, Toni, thanks! 😊
How delightful to see you turning again! I am very glad you felt good enough to do a project and edit a video. Beautiful bowl. Hope you continue to get stronger each day. 💗
😊
I love that bowl, Phil. I've missed you but getting your health back is more important than videos. You've been an inspiration for turning wood with faults. It's a fun challenge for me and challenges my skill and techniques. The pieces I've given away to friends had cracks, bark inclusions, worm holes and knotholes. Some pieces had a flat sides with saw marks. For me, this shows the character and tough life the tree had. My friends also loved the look. A bowl with perfect wood and finish is very nice but I think I enjoy the imperfections more which is fortunate because most of my wood have these. Consider them as natural works of art.
😊
Great to have you back and chipper while you chip for us. A great piece of wood, too, with an amazing gamut of beauty marks.
😊
Wow! The color of that wood is absolutely stunning! I love you you say you don’t want it to be perfect when your pieces always turn out to be perfect in my eyes! That product is great to keep super glue off your fingers. Thank you for showing the bark replacement process! I would never know that the pieces were reattached. Well done
😊
Great to see you back in the Turning Seat Phil. I will always watch your videos no matter how sporadic they are. Take care of yourself.
😊
Just make a vid when ever you can Phil,we'll wait,it's worth it.Load of love.
😊
Well I noticed that there were 10 thumbs up two minutes after you posted this 29 minute video. So... I must not be the only one that just enjoys listening to you talk your way through a project. 😃 Thank you Phil !! God bless you 🙏
😊
Beautiful bowl Phil! Take whatever time you need to get back to full strength. In the meantime take good care of yourself... My thoughts and prayers are with you.
😊
Hey Phil. Great to hear your voice and watch you being creative. Just be patient on your health and take it day by day and enjoy every day. Nice bowl!
😊
Phil, you are the best, my all time favorite Lathe Hero. Get healthy so you can turn more beauties like this one. Get well my friend! G
😊
And I've missed you a lot too Phil. So nice to see you "back in the saddle" albeit less frequently. Always in enjoy your teaching and musings from "Shady Acres".
😊
Another gorgeous bowl Phil, so good to see you in the wood shop again, I truly enjoy your company too! Watching you create such beautiful pieces such as this, transformed from a piece of wood that many would discard, by your magic touch into something so beautiful is a joy to see. I wish you only good health and recovery Phil, keep up the good fight, be safe and keep warm. I look forward to your next turn, thank you always.💛🫂☺️

😊
Nice to see you back Phil, take care and don't rush things, your videos are always worth waiting for.
😊
Great to see you back Phil. No sympathy … just friendship and respect. A patient where I work as a nurse gave me about 12 walnut logs yesterday. Never turned walnut before as as I was looking at them to try and figure out what to turn I was thinking “ what would Phil do?”
You’re still inspirational, a great wood turner and a good man.
Walnut turns easily and beautifully, Pete, enjoy and thanks! 😊
Super nice piece Phil!!! Glad you felt up to making another treat for us! Take it easy and don't overdo it! 👍🙂
😊
Phil don't worry about the video production at this point, just take the time you need to get well

😊
Good to see you again Phil. Another great looking bowl, "in the books"

😊
It's amazing how beautiful you transform this peaces of wood !😍
😊
Well Phil, I didn't know you were sick. I was a little worried when I didn't see any new videos for a bit. I love your channel and would love to meet you but Shady Acres is a long drive from Indiana! Don't fret...when we get a video, we get a video. Take care of yourself! BTW, I've been watching regularly (even watched all your previous videos) and I don't recall seeing you glue bark back to the natural edge. If you hadn't told me (and I hadn't seen the bare spots) I'd have never noticed! Ill never get over how awesome your finished bark turns out!! I want to be as good as you someday...
😊
It's great to see you turning again Phil.
Absolutely Gorgeous Piece.
Looking forward to your next video.

Glad you are back. Hope all is well. Two of us turn in the same shop and you have inspired us to look beyond the obvious shape to something unique. Also to turn wood that others would discard. Thanks.
Excellent! 😊
So glad to see you back Phil! We missed you.
😊
Hey Phil, so glad you’re back. I work in the medical field so you’ve had me worried. Stay healthy and safe my friend.

Thanks, Phil, for another great video. Yes, I am a member of the funnel club. I still got the bowl as a reminder of my miss-up. I took notice of your tip on not getting any more funnel bowls.
😊
Howdy Phil from me and my husband. We love your videos, you’re an inspiration! Keep on turning!
Awesome! Thank you! 😊
Man you seem like the cool uncle that can do anything
😊
Great bowl as always. I worked in a hardware store in the 70s. I remember selling and using gloves cream. Great to keep engine grease from soaking in pores of skin. Thanks Phil.
Thank you, Jim! Yeah, it's great stuff! 😊
I love the channel. It has been a while since I’ve watched. I took care of my mom until she passed. I’m looking forward to getting back to turning again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I'm so sorry for your loss of your mom, Michael.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thank you sir.
Howdy! I'm not sure which I like more, the bowl which is beautiful or just having you back at the lathe. I enjoyed the video immensely and can't wait for another when you can make one. Its good to be in the presence of a master. Prayers for your continued improvement.
Thank you very much, Steve! 😊
I had no idea I was a member of the Funnel Club, I turned one bowl with a tissue thin base which was fun as it gave me a good laugh. It's always good to see you Phil, I enjoyed watching you bring this bowl to life. I hope you are well mate.
😊
Good to see you back Phil.
Once again a very lovely piece.
Take care of yourself and stay healthy
😊
