AG Entertainment they could have done if they had upped the budget PCs in 1999 when this game came out where powerful enough so there's no reason why they couldn't have it would have at least give the PS2 a real reason if it launched as a launch title a year later to sell like hot cakes unlike the reason it ended up getting that it had a DVD player with no decent games for over a year. Yet the poor Dreamcast flopped when it had much better games than the PS2 until it was discontinued.

With that limited budget dmc created a fucking miraculous with this game. Playing it after all this years, still haven't encountered with a bug, myself. And the intro, the feature of the game its soundtracks and radios. Just fucking epic! Now rockstar have a ridiculously large amount of income, yet fucks up with its products... GTA 2's concept is a whole fucking legend that tenders million's hearts!

I think I enjoyed this game more while playing it (when it had just came out) than I did GTA 5 while playing it recently. The same goes for GTA 3. I couldn't believe they were coming out with a 3D GTA and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I had more fun cruisin the city and committing crime in that game than almost any other game I have ever played. For it's time, I enjoyed GTA 3 more than I enjoyed GTA 5, despite GTA 5 having much better graphics and a much better city.

People say that, but I always thought 3 was the best as its atmosphere, story and the city, Vice City was a close almost tie, and San Andreas impressed me with features but I didn't enjoy it much, I went back to San Andreas about 4 years ago and quite enjoyed it. 5 I loved but 4 I hated, only completed it a few weeks back, but part of reason was the terrible optimisation so cant get 60fps. EFLC and Lost and Damned were ok. hey I even preferred Saints Row 2 and 3 better than GTA 4, but not as much as the 3D ones. "evolution" just means improvements in graphics and physics but it also creates a difference experience which feels more and more generic, not that they can't be fun at all. You could even call your love of gaming now the same thing as nostalgia, its about the experience rather than the game.
This game is a classic, its just changing so fast as years go past, and remember..'Respect is Everything.' gta 5 and all the other gta are still a fine game.

@Traffic Light Totally. When I first saw GTA 3 I was so disappointed. I never touched any of them since, except VC Stories on the PSP (which is abysmal; worst money I've spent). A friend of mine had GTA3 San Andreas (or Liberty City, one of those) for the PS1, and it actually seemed quite elaborate and cool, but still not at all the same fun as the first three (1, 2 and London).
My grandma used to sit and watch me play this while she knit and assumed it was some kind of racing game until one day she looked up and read some subtitles. Boy did I get an earful.
I just love the art direction & audio in this game, it's brillant. And it has aged pretty well. The same cannot be said for GTA1 and its jerky camera and flashy colors... GTA2 really is the best 2D GTA and I would love another game in that style. Not just 2D but also with that 90s vibe. Chinatown Wars is fine but it lacks the wackyness of these old DMA Design games. Even tho the new GTA games are still parodies and satyre of the USA; they take themsleves and their gang stories too seriously IMO. GTA2 was fun and stylish and not a pretentious game.
If you never tried Retro City Rampage, give it a go. It's quite cool. Also, to be a bit nitpicky, GTA1 and 2 are 3D games. :) Maybe 2.5D, specifically. The whole map is 3D, and the cars, characters, power ups, etc, are 2D planes. It's actually made of cubes too (with optional slopes), maybe not exactly voxels, but close.
I know this is an old ass comment but honestly it really doesn’t look that bad. Stylistically, it looks awesome especially when you change the setting to night time. The lighting and art style looks really cool IMO. Now GTA I, that’s a game that’ll always look like shit no matter how many drugs you take lol
I wish they had just kept the ped dialogue to a minimum in GTA V like they did in GTA 2. If I hear "diet sodas are actually worse for you" one more time, I'm going to fling my GTA V disc out the window like a frisbie!!!
This is what GTA is all about. Yeah the graphics got better with time but the feel of the game was lost - GTA is a crazy birdseye view game in my view. It's almost a parody of gangster life in some exceptionally bad city.
Kinda makes me bummed to see gta become less of an arcade game with each installment. Just the idea of a bunch of dudes getting together to screw around and make something that was just fun is one of the reasons I want to make a small game company.
When GTA 3 came out it was considered the greatest game of all time but I didn't have a PS2 yet so I wanted to try the previous one since I did have a PC. My dad bought it for me and I didn't know that it was 2D; I was like wtf is this! And it made my PC lag so much because we had 8mb onboard graphics, so I had to buy a graphics card. I ended up loving this game though. I must have spent hundreds of hours playing it. I didn't get a PS2 until the release of Vice City, but I bought GTA3 first and told myself I wouldn't buy VC until I beat it. I think I beat 3 in like a week and a half lmao. Just playing nonstop, if I wasn't working at Papa John's or sleeping for three hours I was playing GTA3. Good memories. Can't believe this all started over two decades ago.
I love this game The style and music just the atmosphere I hope they will find a way to remake it Even into a 3d world , a futuristic gta game But I like every gta game but this one in terms of style , atmosphere is very different from any other gta game not because of the 2d aspect
99% of intellectual content remains unseen for the mainstream. A 3D version would probably look like GTA Pre-War Fallout with cyberpunk-style neon lighting in reddish colors.
