  • Peach Leaf Curl is a common disease of peaches and nectarines. This video is intended to show what the disease looks like, how it spreads and the impact of the disease on the tree. This video does not discuss how to treat peach leaf curl.
    Inspecting your fruit tree for this disease takes a few minutes. While you can not do anything about the disease after the tree is infected, it's important to make a note so in late fall, when you can treat the trees, you know it had PLC.
    While you are at it, look for the fruit set on your peaches, pears, plums and apples. We had an exceptional spring and there is far more fruit on the trees than the trees can carry. Watch video below to learn why fruit thinning improves the quality of your fruit and how to do it.

    If it's a fungus, a 1% dilution of hydrogen peroxide mixed with baking soda and water will treat peach leaf curl. Use a hose end sprayer and treat the tree, ground and immediate surrounding area. Spot treat with a spray bottle for regular maintenance. A pump spray bottle will do. Add some clear non detergent dish soap. Half a bottle of 3% peroxide,1 tablespoon of baking soda, quarter teaspoon dish soap per gallon of water.

    I just planted a nectarine tree last month and believe it's developed this disease. I was FREAKING OUT thinking the tree was going to die and there was nothing I could do to fix it. Unfortunately, it's been very wet in my area and I think the dampness is getting to the tree. You've eased my fears by saying I can treat it when it goes dormant. Thank you. I really hope my little tree survives that long.

    In winter of 2016-17, I bought a bare root peach tree at a local grocery store. Yeah, I know, I should buy trees from a reputable dealer. The tree is a 'Summerset' which I'd never heard of. In summer of 2017, it had a few peaches on it but also PLC. I noticed one fruit that looked ripe. I was afraid the birds would get it, and I was going to put netting on the tree but the fruit fell off. I rescued it from the soil. It was the most beautiful peach I had ever seen: about the size of a softball and a lovely golden color. I took it indoors and washed it; then I cut a piece of it. It was the best peach I've ever eaten! I am going to spray the tree, as you recommended, in November. Maybe I can get some more fruit from this tree. I certainly hope so, since it was sooooo good. Incidentally, I live in WA state about 20 miles south of Seattle, in zone 8b.

    Sidney Godman an Australian wrote an article in which he uses trichoderma mixture successfully to treat established curl. I ordered trichoderma inoculum from Kelp4Less in ID. I am happy to say the trichoderma works very well in the northern hemisphere as well. I keep the inoculum frozen. To use I mix 2 tsp per gallon of water. This mixture will not keep so you have to use it the same day. I spray the entire tree including the trunk and branches, affected as well as not affected leaves. By the following day you will see the changes when the lesions begin to lose their shininess and stop spreading. This way you will not lose the tree. I repeat the treatment between 2 and 7 days depending on the results and severity. Trichoderma is fungicidal fungus that is present everywhere and virtually eats the Taphrina deformans, the affecting agent. There are no environmental concerns. Try you'll like it.

      Thank you for your note Marissa. I did not know about trichoderma mixture, and searched for Sidney Godman's paper as well as several university sites to see if there is any scientific research that backs up your experience. I could not find anything to read. Do you have any references to articles? In any case I am glad it's working for you.

      I do not have any double blind studies to support my observations. All I can do is give you the specifics of what I did and my results over the last 2 years, which supported what Godman described. You can easily try it and see for yourself. Since there are no other promising treatments I thought I share what I have experienced. Maybe somebody else can verify or debunk what I said. I have not looked for anybody else selling the powder. The trichoderma itself is innocuous anyhow.

    • @siamacksioshansi9749

      No double blind studies needed :-) I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I just thought the with size and importance of fruit industry there might be other sources that examined the issue. As you mentioned it might be useful for anyone who gets PLC next year to try your approach and share their outcome. Thanks again.

      I have had a chance to look at my old emails when I communicated with the right person. His name is Lloyd Godman. If you google him and look under permacultureglobal.org you will find where I found his original info regarding trichoderma. I just want to correct the record for anybody else who might be interested in saving their peach trees. There is no doubt that it saved 3 out of the 5 we have.

      I have had similar results with trichoderma, beneficial fungus that predates on the fungus that causes curl. Organic, beneficial and you don’t need to get your timing just right as with chemical treatments. I’ve only been growing fruit trees a few seasons and found trichoderma because I was so concerned about not getting chemical treatments right that I was led to search for an alternative.
      I am in Australia and there are a couple of excellent manufacturers of trichoderma products down here. I use Nutri-life trichoshield.

    I used 2 things to get rid of leaf curl, first i took some milk kaffir got water and sugar let it ferment to grow the microbes, and sprayed it on a rainy week. The rain keeps the microbes alive the sun and dry air will kill the microbes, the microbes will kill the fungus, 2nd thing I did was because last year we didn't have 3 goodays of rain. I spayed my peach tree with chlorine. 25% chlorine with 75% water. Had great peaches.

    • @joelaroche7667

    • @mariopiazza3379
      @mariopiazza3379 4 роки тому

      @@joelaroche7667 for me it was sufficient i did it in the spring after the leaves were heavily contaminated. I had already lost 2 trees, i sprayed it 2 or 3 times killed the leaf curl completely, had a great crop of peaches. The infected leaves dried up and fell off. This year i am going to spay it with chlorine as soon as i see the leaf curl. Really worked for me. Wish you the best. Chlorine dosent seem to hurt green leaves, if your worried take some chlorine full strength and try it on a couple of leaves, i found that it did nothing to the healthy leaves. Also be careful when spraying chlorine not to breathe it in or get it on your good coloured clothes. Spray only when there is no sun, sunlight destroys chlorine.

    I got surprised by PLC a few seasons ago on one of my peach trees. 50% leaf drop that season. Had not been aware of it and I was surprised that my local nursery was uninformed about it. I had to educate myself on the disease and prevention. Now I takes steps each year to prevent it. As you said, if it hits you are stuck with it for the season. However, one can give the tree some nitrogen to promote some new, healthy leaf growth. This disease taught me that tree care does not end with harvest.

    • @TheUrbanFarmers

    Please tell me more about the bag on a peach to deter squirrels. I have not seen squirrel damage in the last few years, even though, there are squirrels in the oak trees behind our house. My tree is beautiful with almost NO PLC after battling it for several years. I have been able to keep it at bay but this year is an exception. I found only a few leaves effected. I must have sprayed at the perfect time this past winter. Thank you for your video. I have been thinning my peaches (which kills me) but after watching your video I need to do more.

    • @siamacksioshansi9749
      @siamacksioshansi9749 9 років тому +1

      Kacy Curran Congratulations Kacy. No PLC, despite the general belief that's easy to treat, is an important accomplishment for backyard gardner.
      In general it's best to not solve problems you don't have. If squirrels become a problem (besides nibbling on a few peaches) then the best solution is to cover the tree (assuming your tree is down to size) with netting. For large tree you can place each of the peaches in a "footie". Yes the same nylon stocking that you wear when trying shoes. It's a lot of work and effects the color (not the taste) of your fruit.

    • @TheUrbanFarmers
      @TheUrbanFarmers  10 років тому +2

      Good eye Julie. The fungus that causes PLC (Taphrina deformans), eventually breaks out onto the surface of deformed leaves and spreads by wind and moisture. So if I had a magic camera that would only show the fungi, We’d see a thin film of spores all over the infected trees. You are right that I moved some of fungi by touching the leaves. I would not think of touching an infected leaf and then move to a healthy tree.
      If you are still reading, here as interesting tidbit about PLC. The fungus stays on the surface of the tree and grows new members when the conditions are right. The right conditions includes temperatures between 50 and 85 (68 is best) and prolonged periods of wetness, like 2 or 3 days of damp rain (the minimum is 12.5 hours of wetness - don’t forget the half hour) Once that happens, where temperatures are right and there is a layer of water on the leaves, the PLC fungi babies start popping up everywhere.

  • @TheUrbanFarmers
    @TheUrbanFarmers  9 років тому +22

    The disese is caused by a fungus and can be treated by an application of a fungicide.The problem is what the chemical industry wants you to do, versus what you should do.
    If you listen to the nursery people, they will tell you to spray your tree three times every year during dormancy. This sells a lot of chemicals and kills a lot of beneficial organisms in your soil.
    My advice is to wait until the leaves are off the tree (in Main probably in November in California as late as January) and spray your tree with a copper fungicide. Look on the label for the active ingredient listed as MCE “metallic copper equivalent,”.
    Mix the copper fungicide according to manufacturer's recommendation, then add 1% horticultural oil. We want this mixture to stick to surface of the tree. Look for copper fungicide solutions that include a "sticker" or "spreader" (usually it comes as an external container to be added to the final solution right before application.)
    Spray this solution and cover every nook and cranny of the tree until it is dripping.
    IMPORTANT
    Copper is a natural product and has been used for centuries.Both people and trees need trace levels of copper. However this copper dripping from your spray/tree and falling on your soil will kill a lot of beneficial organisms, if it goes into the water system will harm the fish and over multiple years of use, the copper levels will build up and make your soil toxic.
    To avoid all this, cover the soil under your tree with a tarp before spraying.
    Since you might be new to spraying your trees, read about the process:
    1- Use safety equipment and cover your nose, eyes, and hands
    2- Spray in a clam (not windy) day when there is no rain in forecast for several days.
    3- In high humidity areas you may have to spray again in spring.
    4- Once you treat PLC you may not get it for several years.
    Good luck.

      Yes you can use copper (a heavy metal) I recommend you cover yourself and the ground below the tree to prevent copper from falling on you or your soil (newspaper, cardboard, plastic tarp,...)
      Copper kills beneficial microbes and if you have to spray the tree every year, the copper can build up and in extreme cases poison your soil.

    I'm a first time fruit tree grower. One of my peach trees I planted a year ago had many tiny peaches and lots of new leafs. By the time I noticed my peach tree had a disease and the whole tree was infected, red spots, leafs curling etc. all the leafs fell off as did all the fruit. I was told to use Daconil it is a Fungicide from Home Depot. I was also informed that the tree is not dead ( it looks like it ) and it will come back. Daconil was applied the end of July 2016.

    You just answered 3 of my questions. Right on! Definitely a new gardener here. Having problems with a peach tree I planted two years ago. I'm desperate to learn all can. Last year, squirrels got all my fruit. This year, all my small young fruit (dime to quarter size) have sap coming out of them. I'm sick about it. Anything that I could do about it now? Have I lost all the fruit for this year? What can I do to prevent it from happening again?

    • @crazyman1750
      @crazyman1750 5 років тому

      The sap is from bugs boring their way into the fruit. They say to spray before or after the blooms. Fungicide with bug killer seems to work. This year a have only a few pieces of fruit with sap leaking. Those get pulled off.

Too me it was an abundant harvest, around 100 peaches and the tastiest peach I have ever eaten. The early peaches were small and had a split nut seed. Last May and this May we have had record breaking rains. In addition I think I might have over fertilized. I did see some Red Fungus type - Leaf Curl on a some of the branch leaves. I did not do anything at end of harvest. I am a relatively experienced gardener. This my first Fruit Tree. Since my second season, this tree is my Baby. I want knowledge and success. Please help.

    Thanks for the video! My tree is three years old and has a pretty bad case of leaf curl. It also has a ton of fruit on it. Will the leaf curl affect the fruit? I have lost my crop the last two years (one year to a squirrel and one to a late freeze), so I was really hoping this would be the year I could finally taste a peach from my tree!

    • @TheUrbanFarmers
      @TheUrbanFarmers  9 років тому +1

      Lisa Adams Yes, let's hope you get to taste your peach this year. The disease should not affect your tree this year. But be sure to spray next year.
      \If you have a lot of squirrels, you may want to wrap a few of the peaches in a cloth or place them in a paper bag and staple the bay shut. I know it's a lot of work, but better than losing your entire crop to them.

    • @TheUrbanFarmers
      @TheUrbanFarmers  9 років тому

      Peach Leaf Curl does not cause your branches to turn brown and dry up. Most likely you have a case of fireblight. Hard to tell without looking. Can you send me a picture? If it's fireblight, then yes cutting the branches a foot below where the branches have dried up is required.
      When dealing with fireblight be careful that you disinfect your tools after pruning or else you can spread the disease to other trees.

    • @TheUrbanFarmers
      @TheUrbanFarmers  10 років тому

      You are welcome. Peach Leaf Curl effect peaches (including flowering peach) and nectarine. It does not spread to any other fruit tree.
      If you live in an urban area, it is difficult to completely avoid the highly mobile air-born fungus, especially in wet years. For example if your neighbor has a tree with the disease untreated, your tree will be exposed to the fungus year in, year out.
      The best prevention is to spray your trees during dormancy. Spray formulas are changing and the issue is more complex than it should be. Check back in late fall (or subscribe) for a then current update.
      Meanwhile practice good hygiene. Every leaf and twig of that tree should be picked up and discarded. Other than clean up, nothing to do but enjoy the fruit this summer.

    Hi. I'm a first time fruit tree grower. One of my trees is a Long Beach Peach, which I planted a year ago around March. It had tons of tiny peaches this year and, I thought I had thinned it out pretty good. I must have taken off a good 25 to 35 tiny peaches, which was hard for me to do. Before they could get much bigger than about the size of a golf ball, they started falling off the tree. Every day, a good 12 to 20 peaches were on the ground. Why is this? How can I prevent it from happening next year? Thanks ever so much!

    Thank you, now we can treat our trees of 3 years from this in November. Also could you email us if you know the answer to the following. My peaches last year looked as though something bored into them and out came a clear jelly like substance from the peaches them selves. Started treating with neem oil this year in hopes of treating, but when we just walked the trees we found young fruits with the jelly substance again.

      Almost any time you see a circle of oozing frass (the larvae’s excreted waste) on the trunk of a fruit tree, it's a borer destroying the tree from inside out.
      Borers were here in U.S. and Canada living in wild cherry and plum trees before peaches, nectarines, and apricots were brought over.
      The peach tree borer (Synanthedon exitiosa) burrows into fruit tree's trunk near (sometimes below ground) and eats its way into the living cambium layer of the tree.
      Peach Borer can easily kill young trees and older trees that survive the borer attack will show less vigor and produce low quality fruit.
      Look for white to beige and brown larva. They are around an inch (or more) and if you see them crush them. It won't solve the problem but will make you feel better.
      Look for borer holes and make them larger with a sharp knife. Spray neem oil at highest concentration allowed from the ground up to 12' above ground (and into the holes)
      If you have a severe infestation, paint all exposed roots and the trunk with a paste of Surround WP. This powder is made of kaolin clay and irritates the pest.
      Google peach borer. This is a serious problem. Don't ignore it.

    looking at your trees I see the same problems as in Michigan. The inside of a tree is not supposed to be showing or hardend. All the branches you cut should sap over with in a yr. of cutting. Our towers and satellites stop/block the natural way sap travels through the trees by at least 50%. I made orgone pucks and placed them around my yard and my trees sapped over and starting growing faster. one trees diameter of the trunk grew 10 " in one yr.
    A tree has no mechanical ability to draw up sap it depends on the sun, I believe that the satellites are interfering with sun ability to grab the water.

    • @TheUrbanFarmers
      @TheUrbanFarmers  9 років тому

      Thanks for telling me where you live. Are some of the leaves turning yellow? Here are the top two candidates for black spots on peaches. Unfortunately they are very similar and difficult to distinguish.
      Bacterial Spot - is a common disease of peach caused by a bacteria. Google “peach bacterial spot cornell” and see if that sounds like what you have.
      Peach scab - looks very similar to bacterial spot but is caused by a fungus. Google “peach scab university georgia” and see if that’s matches your problem.
      Based on my experience (unscientific) bacterial spots usually begin on the lower part of the peach, and are darker in color. Peach scab often starts at the top of the peach near the stem, then spreads downward. Hope this helps.

    • @TheUrbanFarmers

      If the leaves are out and the tree is infected the only thing you can do is to "nurse" the tree until dormancy. Make sure the tree is watered during dry periods, is insect free and basically reduce stress on the tree until fall. During dormancy (around November) treat the tree with copper-based fungicide or if your state allows with lime-sulfur.

    Nice relaxing video. Two questions, as we move into spring and our peach trees are starting to blossom here in the SF Bay Area. 1) I've heard some people don't wait for the tree to fruit to thin, but remove the excess blossoms. If you have any experience with that, how early would you do that? 2) What are you using as weed suppression underneath your trees? What is under that mulch? I'm thinking about using cardboard, but I'm concerned about reducing the amount the amount of water the tree roots get.

    • @TheUrbanFarmers
      @TheUrbanFarmers  7 років тому

      Removing blossoms are easier than removing fruit. Do it only if you are sure of what you are doing. I prefer to remove the fruit. It's easier to see the quality of the fruit set and how far they are from each other. For weed suppression, I use my fingers and once the weeds are gone put down a thick layer of mulch. There is no easy way out of this one :-)

    I live in Maine and have a dwarf peach tree that is 4 years old. It developed PLC in it's second year. A local nursery said to strip all the leaves off of the tree in May and dispose of them. I just couldn't do it. I learned that the diseased leaves fall off and, as you said, new ones will regrow that show no signs of the disease. I have not treated PLC because I was told that there really was nothing I could do about this disease. You indicated that there was something I could do in the fall and if left untreated this would eventually kill the tree. It is hard enough to keep a peach tree alive in Maine. What can I do to get rid of PLC and save the tree?
