- For $42 I ordered a set of two SD hum bucking pickups with a pre-wired system. Normally I would have not made a video of knockoffs except they put a name brand on it and I had to check it out as I LOVE SD pickups!
The differences will be noticeable but the big question is, will they sound good???
$10 off at REVERB for a new customer. Minimal purchase is $50. If you find free shipping that’s even better! Click the link for the offer.

I think there are knockoffs out there more difficult to spot than this one too. This one is pretty easy to spot.
The square black hole is from thr original Gibson PAF from 1957/58, the use the same casting tooling (for 6 string P.U.)and the original pickup winder in the SD custom shop (or with 80'S SD Pickups)
I agree that there shouldn't be a "Seymour Duncan" on the front of the pickup but the color of the backing plate or the roundness of the mounting tabs or the two holes on the front being on the "wrong" side have no effect whatsoever with the sound they produce. Let's hear a blind test to see if the SDs are worth the extra $150. Just like the name brand guitar makers overprice their products we can expect the component makers to jump on the overpriced bandwagon as well. The proof is in the playing.
I am currently in Thailand, and working on my nephews guitar where I am replacing two rusty humbucking pick ups with two new humbucking pick ups from China. I will test those and post it in about a week.
You can now check out those reviews and more at JD Custom Guitars.
You can check out my newly uploaded reviews on pick ups from USA, Korea and China. Those can be found on my UA-cam channel JD custom guitars.
I'm late to the party here, but the worst part is people installing these in guitars and selling them off as "SD pups installed" when they are fake. This is where it gets ugly...
I have seen really bad Chinese pick ups and I have seen some relatively good ones as well. Sometimes they’re easy to see and other times, you have to really give it a good look.
I am getting ready to replace a China pick up off of my China guitar with a Dimarzio $100 pick up to see if there’s any sound difference. 🐀
@jimmymeetsworld464 I'd really like to hear the results. If ya don't mind, can you post back here after the swap?
The question is how do they sound compared to each other? That would be nice if there was a sound comparison
I have a feeling they would’ve sounded just fine. On my other channel JD, Custom Guitars I tested not only Chinese and USA pick ups are Korean ones as well. Sound wise they all faired out pretty well. Although the Korean pick ups had better construction.
@@buddhastalin8445 the problem is it can be hit and miss when it comes to China. I just finished an extensive review of China Qatar bridges that are powder coated. I am advising my viewers not to purchase these type of bridges from China as they give grounding issues. If you want, subscribe, and I’ll have the video up in a couple of days.
Tbh, the font on your ‘original’ pickup doesn’t match the photos on the Seymour Duncan website - og is somewhere in between…
The one in the box is real and the one I’m holding is fake.
Is Plasmon real Plasmon anymore? Are you looking at Simon Templar on a B&W TV set that has HF roofing or you're already buying cheaper shirts from China, is the font perfected or gross?! I don't know. Namastè.
????
I have the fakes and they sound super. Clean and dirty. Got them with a full kit including push/pulls. No regrets.
Kids are great and there are several companies to choose from. I am just pointing out how China can get away with copyright violations and build a guitar. That is an insult to a fender or even a kit like the one. I’m gonna be ordering here soon.
Which model fake pickups do you have?
With regards to the font. I had a JB already I bought another one for my other guitar from a well known German music shop and the font is just like the fake you have here. Everything else is like the genuine you have here
Thanks the review
No problem! BTW JD Custom Guitars is where all my reviews are at.
The song?
What song are you referring to?
Open it check see if the magnets are ceramic
I probably would have, but I no longer have that pick up. I just recently did a video for my YT channel JD Custom Guitars where I tore apart a humbucking pick up from China. Go to that channel and you can check out the video.
Waiting for sound test video!
Those pick ups will go into a guitar that I am refinishing. It will still be a few weeks before I can get those pick ups in to compare the sound. I’m still working on sanding off the finish.
Terimakasih telah membuat video ini, saya menunggu uji suaranya.
I am moving to Thailand in a couple of weeks and I will start the process of purchasing Chinese pick ups for testing.
I am currently in Thailand, and working on my nephews guitar. His pick ups were worse than a Chinese copy pick up. So I grabbed two new hum bucker pick ups made in China. I will test those for sound when I’m finished.
Interesting but we need to hear them.
When I move to Thailand, I will be testing all types of Chinese pick ups.
Pickup reviews and more have been uploaded to JD Custom Guitars. Thanks for the comment.
As far as one being slightly longer than the other is that he's comparing a bridge pickup to a neck pickup. The bridge pickup will always be slightly longer and the posts slightly further apart.
The biggest tell of which is fake is the brass base. Seymour Duncan uses nickel silver.
Those are both bridge. Used for my guitars that I was building where I only use one pick up and that’s in the bridge position. 🐀
Easy to tell the $18 set are fake
@@JohnAdams-xc5yk that’s what I was thinking.
I still can't understand why SD, given the fact they've got their name on the front of the bobbin, still has that awful looking square hole in one end. Dimarzio don't have it. And I've got an old Schaller 2in1 that doesn't have ANY holes in the front. Bizarre.
I noticed that too. You can even see the copper wiring through the two holes on top. It was like that on the fake one as well but they had it backwards. To me it’s not a very clean look. But I do love their sound.
@@rattyguitars Me too. I would use them myself but I don't want anyone else's name on my guitars, and those ugly holes. Sound wicked though!
@@alexanderguestguitars1173 I don’t think the guy whose guitar I am working on was very enthusiastic about the black pick up either. But that’s OK cause I still have the gold covers that I can put on top of them.
