I built my garden from nothing just a few years ago. I started with cardboard over lawn. Then I put a foot thick of woodchip on top of that. It sat and decomposed for a year. Last year I grew crops but yields were nothing to write home about. This year however, it’s starting to pay off. I was finally able to pull a few monster sized carrots from my garden a week ago! Hopefully next year will be even better.

Seems like you're lucky enough to actually have halfway decent soil under your lawn. If you can keep things mulched, and one step ahead of the pests, you should be well on your way.
I feed the birds at the back of my plot. If they can fatten up now, then they should have a better chance of making it to Spring. With any luck, they will also associate my plots as a place to find food.
They will get through a feeder full of black sunflower seeds in just over a hr. In Spring/Summer, it could be days before I need to refill it again.

Understanding the partnership between the gardener and the worms is key to "growing" good soil!

Hi Greg, I’m in Yarmouth , so we’re almost neighbours! and I leave my carrots in the raised bed all winter. Every winter. When I figure they’ve stopped growing I cover mine with a good layer of leaves and cover them with several spruce boughs to keep the leaves in place. It’s very satisfying to go out to the garden in mid-winter, brush back the snow, and fork up a few carrots. They’ve never frozen. I try to harvest the ones on the edge of the bed, near the boards first. I hate thinning carrots, so I space my seeds out as I plant them. A pain in the neck, but saves having to thin later. The only problem I had this year was small birds digging up and eating the seeds in the corners. So I’ll have to cover them with netting next year. And I like volcano from Vesey’s too. I get huge carrots

I love this information particularly on spacing because my family rarely just eats carrots but we cooks a lot of stews, stir fry, and soup. A few larger carrots would be so much better for how we cook!😊

I usually do 3 or 4 plantings of carrots here in my 6b garden. One the beginning of April and a couple small succession plantings late spring or early summer to keep me going until fall. After I harvest my onions in mid July I amend the soil a little and plant a 4x7' bed of carrots for fall and winter. That one's a little tricky to get good germination in some summers but by amending the soil and using shade cloths I seem to be having good luck lately. I have a very nice carrot bed out in the garden covered with a poly tunnel now that should keep me in carrots well into the winter. Just began harvesting from it the last couple weeks and have gotten some nice carrots similar in size to what your pulling out. You're the guy that introduced me to keeping carrots in the ground during the winter under plastic and it's been working great for me. Thanks!

Going to give carrots a go again this year. Carrot fly is no fun, but I have a plan of sorts. There's the mid-section from an old one of those round domestic home heating oil tanks. I cut the top/bottoms off, and use the bottom as a lid. I will grow them in there, and bungee round the sides to hold fine mesh over the top.
It was filled with all the really awful weeds on my plots when I was clearing the place. That sank down pretty quickly, then I topped it up with a good 14-16" of sandy topsoil and manure. Past two years it has fruit bush cuttings, or pumpkins in there. Any weeds are the odd seed that blew in.
It's basically a round raised bed with a good 3ft of decent soil. I will need to top it up again because it still has a fair bit of organic matter that's going to continue breaking down at the bottom. A barrow each of topsoil, compost, a little bit of mushroom compost, and a barrow of willow leaves over the top.
Our site is terrible for growing carrots. We are on what would have been a narrow strip of sandy flood plain. So the soil is decent, it just has lots of stones as well. You fish, so you already know the pebble to fist sized stones you get along river banks. Only one guy grows carrots, and that's in a wooden raised bed at the end of his poly.

Great video! I planted right alongside you in the spring and my carrots sized up beautifully, like yours. They are sweet and tender. I had some frosts that started freezing the carrots and surrounding soil and found some carrots rotting, so pulled them all. Now, I have a 50 gallon garbage can full and kept in a shed, protected for the winter. It's a great feeling to have all of that to gradually use as needed. I'm quite interested to see how long they will keep, too!

I think I harvested my carrots too soon. However, if I leave them in too long they get wireworm. Decisions! 😁

This year was my best year for carrots. i have found that carrots do pretty good even while being shaded quite a bit. I planted my row of carrots 3ft from my rows of potatoes, so when the potatoes grew they completly covered the carrots until I harvested them in mid/late summer. The carrots continued to grow well though and i still got decent sized carrots. Most years i leave them in and then the voles eat most of them so i harvested early.

I pulled my carrots in sept because they were splitting and trying to go to seed. I think all the rain this year was just too much for them. Got a few that were 3 inches across, and a couple shaped like a brick, as wide as it was long. I did a second sowing in July that is still going in the garden now. Very tasty but a bit small.

Nice Carrots different varieties obviously give to its size, I believe the seed is to blame with misshaping carrots too besides soil conditions.❤
I wonder if coffee grounds would be a good trial with carrots.
Germination of carrots need good moisture levels whilst in the first 7-14 days.

    Hey Greg...great carrot video!
Just starting to harvest mine...I planted 2 varieties...Volcano and Bolero. Used pelleted seed as my old fingers can deal with them much easier...😅
Great harvest this year, really worked out well. I still have parsnips to deal with and a ton of leeks. Best year for leeks...lots of rain and they sucked it up - about half are at least 1 1/2" - 2" in diameter and 2+ feet tall! Crazy.
Parsnips are huge also though I didn't get the quantity I usually get...spotty germination.
In any case hope you have an awesome Christmas and talk soon!

Greg, how about a carrot cooking video. On a different note, this year I had rodent eating my potatoes. The rodents ate my red potatoes, but the rodents really liked my Kennebec potatoes. But they didn’t touch my carrots or parsnips. Is that your experience also?

    • @phyconinga
      @phyconinga 6 місяців тому

The voles always like my carrots and potatoes. I believe a lot of it has to do with how loose and deep the soil is. The voles didn't do much tunneling in the regular traditional row beds but they did in the deep raised beds. I had to pull all my carrots recently because they will just decimate them.

I grew a pelleted carrot seed from Vesey’s two years ago. I believe that they were Volcano and they were nice large carrots. The last two years, I’ve used Nantes from a nearby garden centre and I’m not happy with the size. I’ll definitely add a packet of Volcano seeds to my Vesey’s order next month (using your coupon code as always). Thanks for the reply.
