At least according to Apple, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 have very similar battery life. However, unlike the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 is the first sub-$1000 iPhone that has an OLED display. Therefore, we decided to test both phones to see how much of a difference using Dark Mode would make given Dark Mode's battery boosting effects on OLED screens.
Also, we included the iPhone 12 using Light Mode (aka regular mode) so you can see how much of a difference dark mode vs light mode makes on the iPhone 12.
TEST OBSERVATIONS:
- We've found that the iPhone 11 series offers better standby performance than the iPhone 12 series across the board. Hopefully this will be resolved in a future software update.
- Not all of the apps / uses in this test take advantage of dark mode, and this was by design to help provide a more realistic idea of how much dark mode can help battery life.
- Dark mode is going to have a bigger impact on phones with larger screens (since the battery savings come directly from saving on screen power consumption).
- Dark mode may also have a bigger impact on older OLED screens as the newer ones are generally more power efficient (for example, Apple claimed a 15% boost in efficiency from the iPhone XS to the iPhone 11).
TEST NOTES:
- Screens were calibrated to 200 nits with auto-brightness turned off.
- Speakers calibrated to the same decibel count.
- Tested within equal distance of a mini cell tower.
- Tested in a temperature controlled environment.
- All devices tested were new and had 100% battery health.

You cannot made an comparison with 2 different phones, iphone 12 and iphone 11,different battery capacity, different cpu and many other things.
Sure it’s not a perfect comparison, but in terms of LCD vs OLED it’s as close to an Apples to Apples comparison as you can get!

Same. I've been using my dark mode for almost 2 years straight on my s9+

Please do side by side comparison between two LCD devices. And bust the myth once and for all of "whether dark mode helps save battery in devices with LCD displays"
When they were doing the game comparison you could see the difference between OLED and LCD. Only time I have noticed a difference. Gonna stick with the Xr.
Oled is superior and has more vivid colors don't know what was the thing with that game, maybe they had true tone turned on on the 12 s

Dark mode on my 7 felt nicer. But on the OLED panel of my 12 mini it changes everything
LCD actually consumers LESS power when the screen is showing light/white colors. So it would make sense to compare the 11 running light mode with the 12 running dark mode.
That is why I waited to see this test before cementing the fact that a smaller battery won't lead to any drains in the battery even from 12 to 11 light mode. And since I use my iPhone in dark mode and not only for the battery gains it was a no-brainer when it came to which one should I buy. Also, OLED content cannot be compared to what LCD brings even though it doesn't matter for a lot of people, it does for me. So thank you @PhoneBuff for making this test!
Thank you for this tests, it answers our questions about the iPhone 12
Well, we have to also take into consideration the fact that the A14 chip is 5nn against the 7nm A13, thus, is more battery efficient.
The only fair comparison i can take for this is the Iphone 12 light vs Iphone 12 dark modes, since it's the same chip. But the fact that the difference between Iphone 12 light vs Iphone 11 is only 4%.... That's pretty underwhelming...

Take lot of loves from us(fans of you). Ours support is with you.
An iPhone 11 in light mode would have been nice to see how light mode on an lcd screen compares
LCD displays should perform better on light mode because they have to twist their pixels to block out the backlight for blacks, which is more power hungry.
I was also thinking about that
I can confirm this. I tested 3 different LCD computer monitors with a kill-a-watt and found around 10% HIGHER power consumption for black screen vs white.
this test is nice but he should`ve tested a iphone 11 on light mode imo.
i agree. what I don’t agree about is that the 11 has an A13. which makes it unfair to compete with the A14.
