      John, a quick questin for you. I've just watched a couple of shorts by someone I think is on Tik Tok, London something (no, not you) Both titles refenced 'this is abusive and they were referring to the horses. Then a load of 'experts chimed in on both shots, , especially when the horse (who had been taken into the box possibly because it was anxious) when someone approached ( an elder gent) and the horse had a meltdown. All these so called experts were blaming the boxman for holding the reins too tight, causing him to rear, and accusing the rider of spurring the horse. Also they said the boxman was not experienced enough and the usual about the horse standing there for too long. Any ideas ? calling a horse abusive when it's normally provoked by tourists , just got up my nose so I disliked both and flipped back to sanity (you. Any ideas who it might be? I don't watch Tik tok.

      There's a lot of so called " experts " like to pontificate on videos , most because no one pays them any attention ! I find a good way to shut them up was to tell them to contact HCav with their " knowledge and experience " 😁. Or just simply ignore them 😊. I prefer to stick to the expertise of those who post on John's videos .

    Admittedly a horse’s bite power cannot compete with a crocodile or a grisly bear - but then no one would be daft enough to willingly stick their arm in their mouths. But a horse’s jaw is attached to a huge masseter muscle - the most powerful muscle in its entire body. This muscle allows the horse to both bite down and grind food. It’s the muscle you see working at the side of the horse’s face when it’s eating.
    A horse’s average bite power has been measured at around 500psi - over twice that of a pit bull and stronger than that of a a wolf. By contrast we puny humans can only boast a bite power of around 160psi So if Waygood had decided to clamp his mouth shut on her wrist it would have stood little chance of emerging in one piece.
    Generally speaking a horse is quite willing to respond favourably to attention from humans -unless it feels the need to protect itself. Then it can, and will, turn aggressive through fear more than anything else. The most extreme case I’ve read about is of someone treating a horse abominably. He came out of the conflict without a face - at least not a recognisable one.
    So confusing the cavalry blacks as some cutesy little exhibits in a petting zoo is not a smart move. Gorgeous and magnificent as they are read the signs - laid back ears, head tossing, tail swishing, pawing the ground. All indications that the horse is saying “back off.” They deserve respect.
    As for moving the bit higher - placing it around one wrinkle higher in the mouth does give the guard more contact through the reins which gives them a bit more control on the nippers - spoilsports!

    That had to be the Stupidest thing to do, placing your wrist inside the mouth of a horse! She's damn lucky that the animal didn't bite down with his teeth! Broken wrist for sure! It's amazing to me the lack of common sense, and the amount of stupidity shown by tourists when they are close to the horses.

      Lol I have seen people put their wrists, arms, and hands in horses mouth and the genuinely shocked when they get bit. Not just horses either, they do even do it to cattle. Our neighbor has 2 horses and then one large bull and 7 cows. I've seen people stop and do it to then as well. The cows don't use come unless they know you but the bull will. And yes he loves to be petted but if you stick something in his mouth he's gonna eat it, or try to. And it's never kids. It's the adults.

  • @BevWalther

    I think the reason why people come up to touch the horse or do STUPID IDIOTIC things is to prove they are not afraid of the horse. I just wish they would leave the poor horse and Guard alone and allow them to do their job. They are after all MILITARY!! IT IS A MILITARY INSTALATION, THEY ARE REAL SOLDIERS ... THE 2 LEGGED AND THE 4 LEGGED ARE SOLDIERS!!! For God's sake show them THAT RESPECT!! Quit treating them as if they are a carnival or zoo. THEY ARE NOT!
    I just wonder how many would even consider treating their countries military in this same manner. What would happen if they did? How far would they get in doing so? Would they like other country's tourons to come over and do the same as this to theirs? These types of actions just annoy me to no end.
    WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST STAND A RESPECTABLE DISTANCE AND HAVE THEIR PHOTO TAKEN AND LEAVE? There is no rule saying to touch the horse in order to have an authentic photo with the Horse Guard.

    • @susanterry4698
      @susanterry4698 24 дні тому +4

      In Essence I agree with your “Rant” but this is not Normal Circumstances. Yes they are Military but in a Pageantry Form which our Great Country is Famous for, is the envy of most of the Free World and draws in millions of tourists a year and their money in our coffers. These are not ordinary horses either but chosen for their height, stature, temperament, and trained to the hilt to accept the rigours of the career that is their destiny. Is it right? Is it fair? being an animal lover I must say I find it a tad disturbing to see the horses standing still with a weight on their backs for an hour - it must take a lot of Mental Discipline for the beasts and is little wonder a minority “Kick Off” as John calls it from time to time. It is Pageantry though, a Spectacle now, dating back to King Charles 1 in the year 1661 apparently and I am sure you will agree the world has changed since then and the Tilt Yard no longer needs this mode of protecting as we have now more efficient Modern Security. I myself accept it for what it is and if a crowd gathers too close and Disrespects the Horses then it is up to the Trooper on his mount to Shout and Reprimand. He is in charge.

    The horse all wear double bridles so that means 2 bits in the mouth the higher is the bradoon and has plain round rings, this is a gentle bit and the reins lie looser, the lower mor fancy bit is the curb bit and allows greater control with less pressure by the guard, as it acts with the curb chain noseband and head band to apply the pressure to the horse, so the reins are held a little tighter. Horses like to play with the mouth pieces which causes the froth you see, and often get a tongue over (normally when you see the tongue sticking out the side of the mouth the tongue is over the bit). head tossing can cause the tether chain to work loose (the one that goes round the neck) as it can dislodge the toggle.
    Horses can sneeze and they are affected by strong scents, like perfume, just like us.

      @MerelyGifted 24 дні тому +3

      @@bonnieweeks7601 I knew a cute spotted school pony who was a civilized beastie only when ridden and handled by prepubescent girls. After they reached that milestone, he became stubborn, mean, and uncooperative, often shockingly so. He bit, kicked, refused to move/speed up, bucked, and/or ran away with them.
      I watched so many little girls win so many ribbons on him & fall in love with him. He was beautifully behaved, whatever their skill level, and sure seemed to return their affection. Once in their tweens, those broken-hearted girls were suddenly very ill-regarded strangers to him. It wasn't a weight thing - all were still quite petite - he was almost horse-sized & up to much weight.
      He *twice* threw my mother, an experienced rider who'd jumped her own height, and even expended a lot of energy in failing to make it three times. He unsuccessfully attempted to unseat me almost every time I rode him, but I was too many for him, Epona be praised.

    You know John, since the Horse Guards (especially the guard on right) don't shout any more, it would help if you and other YT filming would tell people to get off the reins since they aren't acknowledging the pulls that the guard does to get them off. Just tell them the sign says 'DON'T TOUCH THE REINS!' SO GET OFF!! Quit being RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL! I would love to hear you, Buska or any other YT filming tell them, help the Guard and the Police by keeping the RUDENESS away from the horses. Just a request to stop the rein holders that DON'T seem to be able to read. Yeah and then, there are those that like to lean on the Guard's boot, thinking it is OK to do so.
    Some people just have no manners intruding on other people's photos 51:44 like this old lady did to the young boy.

    Also, any news regarding The King‘s Life Guards tall, dark, handsome with distinguished grey eyebrows & the fastest horse in the Household Cavalry, INVADER? He’s one of the 2 horses riding behind Queen Elizabeth‘s coffin, the other JAVELIN, a grey horse. That was the last time I saw him. I feel his absence at Horse Guards…

      Hi. I can somewhat explain the Rarden, Arnie difference. The original Arnie was all black. We don’t know the real name of that horse. John wasn’t reading the hoof numbers back then. Because Rarden is a nipper and a saucy girl someone started to call her Arnie. So a lot of people just started calling her that. John started reading the hoof numbers and found out her real name and that she is a mare. Hoping that helps. 😊

    JOHN, who can we write to about changing many of the expectations for the tourists to follow? There’s no one acting aggressively enough to protect the Guards . most people have no common sense so they need more guidance on proper behavior. It’s so chaotic and unfair to the horses and the Guards.

    The Horse has been talking to his mates out the back. Biting the tourists helps the boredom. LOL. Don't you have trash bins around London? We have them all over our tourist spots in NZ. You've just answered my question John: Pleased you found a place for your coffee cup. LOL. Seriously; the Horses are really magnificent as are the Guards. A beautiful day in London . . . enjoy . . . For security reasons no trash cans. Not around the Military areas or the government buildings. Dangerous things could be dropped inside.

    • @paulinemegson8519
      @paulinemegson8519 24 дні тому +1

      Yeah the issue is basically due to the fact that back in the 80s when the “troubles” were still a thing, a favourite trick of the IRA was to hide bombs on timers in rubbish bins or parked vehicles. There were bomb attacks in the area in the period, the worst being the one hidden in a parked veh on the Mall which killed several Blues and Royals troopers, both humans and horses. Hence NO parking along the Mall, and NO rubbish bins in the Whitehall area. Yes it’s inconvenient but the reasoning is deadly serious.

    My first thought was, what if someone had something on their skin that is poisonous to horses? I remember visiting horse farms here in Ocala Florida and walking right up to paddocks with million dollar horses in them, Rugged Lark, Secretariat (in Kentucky), Silver Charm. The world today is one where you really can't trust people and their intent.

    People should believe the warning sign. A woman at the Preakness stakes this past Saturday had part of her finger bitten off by one of the horses while petting him. The danger is real.

  • @nixxie2390
    @nixxie2390 19 днів тому

    Anyone else think there should be those 'warning' signs on BOTH sides of the horse - because anyone on the opposite side cannot see it. Also I think they should have it in pictogram style too for the non-English speakers. Plus there needs to be signs near the arches to stop meandering tourists. This place is crying out for much better signage!

    Hi John I very often pick out my favourite troopers from your videos and send a comment to you. I haven’t seen one from Lifeguards and two from Blues and Royals since I sent a comment to you. Please could you let me know what the troopers do or where they may be posted when not at Horseguards. Just curious :) I hope they have not left the regiment altogether! Thanks Is it just pot luck to see a particular trooper at horseguards if you visit? I guess security has a place to play, quite rightly so, for the troopers. Wonderful daily footage John! Thank you
