- The Hillsborough disaster on 15 April 1989 claimed the lives of 96 football fans, when overcrowding caused a crush on the terraces of Sheffield Wednesday's stadium at the start of an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest football clubs. The BBC spoke to Bruce Grobbelaar, who was in goal for Liverpool that day. He described how the fans had pleaded with him to help them.

Good man Bruce, genuine. You can still see the pain in his eyes and the helplessness he must have felt being so close. I've just posted a Tribute on my channel and it brought back to me the pride around the club and the anger and sadness of the event. 97 will never to be forgotten, and love to all the families. YNWA EVER.
Genuine bloke. Saw the horror early and responded. Pity the police failed to do this.
Well said Bruce you and the rest of the players and fans are heroes
lol he took bribes
@@MarkSmith-er7fe but when it really mattered...it's called redemption my friend
☣️🤒😭
Much respect to you Bruce. We're all human, we're all imperfect. Thank you xx
I grew up in Northern Ireland during the 70s and 80s. I saw first hand
countless acts of violence and atrocities inflicted on not only my
community but to others as well. But in April 1989 on that fateful day
in Sheffield, the disaster that took place which 96 innocent souls lost
their lives in the most horrific of ways sent a shiver through the spine
of the 15 year old boy that i was that day. Hillsborough i can say
without any doubt was the one thing that disturbed me most when i was
growing up. And i witnessed mass murder on a weekly scale in my country
at that very time. As a hardened West Ham fan, i shed a tear of
happiness today for the people of Liverpool and I pray to the good lord
above that they can now find closure and peace and move on with their
lives, knowing that their lost loved ones are finally smiling down on
them for a fight well fought on their behalf. YNWA/COYI
Very eloquently put. Respect to you my friend.
That is well put. I was 18 at that time and it sent a shiver down my spine too and i share your same sentiments that it greatly disturbed me. I had friends at the match but i was not there. I had not even heard of the concept that crowds could even have this sort of crushing risk. It just never occurred to me, but after this i very consciously avoided crowded places. However, there was one time i went to a club in Birmingham. It was The Dome. When we were going in, it was not too busy, but as the night drew on, it got absolutely packed. I knew it was unusually tight in there. When we were trying to get out, there were a few nervous people. I remember a short girl in front of me who was worried. I tried to create a little bit of space for her and gave her some assurances that I'd look after her.
Then a while later there was a crowd crush in a club in my home town. To this day i avoid crowds.

Valiant words...
Thank you
Nicely put, but being a West ham fan I just wondered if you were a soldier in NI.
just heard this on the radio D'; god bless the 96 people
Bruce like all of LFC, will Remember that day for ever, puts the 96 jersey on with passion and love...... watched him play in the 80’s with LFC..... Man of great pride YNWA
Fantastic guy always loved Bruce and remember standing in the Kop singing Bruce give us a wave, and he always did.
God bless you son
You speak from your heart I am 80 years old veteran I have been in the kop when the kop was full thanks to the players and Liverpool club And the people involved I am Australia
Came to England was in the first kings reg
The Liverpool people looked after me thank you all 🌟
Can understand entirely why Bruce wasn't sure right away what was going on. When someone in a footy crowd suddenly says to yoo "They're killing us" you're not likely to know who they mean.
These moments you will have like a photographic memory off, as it will forever stick in your mind for people like him, who saw it first hand.
Sure he remembers it in great detail even today
6 people disliked this.. Are you even human?
13 now sadly m8, some people just do it out of spite I think...
Absolutely disgraceful.
Real sound bloke - well said Bruce
Truth
I'm a liverpool fan but respect to the man.utd fans for their words it's good to know their are still decent people who no matter the rivalry. I'm disgusted all the songs about Hillsborough and munich its about time they stopped but unfortunately i doubt they ever will.
Totally agree. Proper football fans will mourn but support each other through tragedies. We have Hillsborough, Man Utd have Munich. Even though there's immense rivalry there has to be respect in equal measure.
I feel like you don’t need to be a football fan for this tragedy to deeply affect you. This has made me shed tears, I hope the Liverpool fans understand how much of a hero they are, I fear if it weren’t for them dragging people to safety and carrying them then a lot more lives would have been lost. It should never have happened. Everyone says 97 victims but unfortunately the number of victims is truly unknown and is much higher when you consider family members, those who were injured but survived, those who witnesses or just attended and those who couldn’t take it anymore and ended it. It goes on and on, some children never even got the chance the know their parent 💔
Rip 96 from arsenal fan..
RIP 96 YNWA
Can't believe they couldn't have opened those cages. Not even a fire crew to cut it open
Things were changed drastically after Valley Parade and Hillsborough so stadium gates are now either locked with electronic locks that can be released remotely or left unlocked during the game. Of course perimeter fencing was done away with after the Taylor Report which resolved that issue immediately
After this match it became routine to put the kick off back if fans were still not all in the ground. No panic - wait. If only this was the norm rather than 3 0’clock rigid.
You'll Never Walk Alone 96...
Beautiful bruce
I'm an Manchester united fan but still rest in peace the 96.
"still"?
“But”?
Good on you manc from a scouser
@@aishabakr5850 and Logan Fox :- Has the rivalry between Liverpool and United passed you by? 🙄
Ynwa never ever forget ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
We will never never forget the 96...........
I will like to think lessons have really been learned since 1989
If you're looking for a scrap of positivity then at least you can look at football now and know that those poor people didn't die for nothing. We learned a lot of lessons from it that means that we can all go to football matches knowing we will make it home again. sadly 96 didn't make it home
He was shouting at fans to get off the pitch
Yes I've just seen a clip of him telling fans to get off the pitch. Funny how he doesn't bring this up in this interview 🤔
Some of the police officers were very busy at the busy at the time and the goalkeeper was asked by a policeman to go down the tunnel.
🙏🏽
Not to sound awful here but ive seen a clip of bruce being very abrupt telling one fan to get off the pitch. Im unsure why he'd do this after seeing people crushed up against the fences.
Awful tragedy RIP the 96 from a man united fan. Separated in football rivalry United in grief and respect
He is a hero
R I P 96 YNWA
Still looks in good trim have to say
Sad to see supporters of Everton and man utd sing sickening chants about this football game that ended up with the loss of 96 lives, shame on you, RIP and justice for the 96 from an oldham athletic fan
Agreed, but just as shameful to hear Oldham fans sing about Munich for years and years 👍
god bless 96
It was an incredibly good shot from Beardsley to hit the cross bar and now the rest is tragic history.
I'm a Liverpool supporter and as a club we've seen tragedy but so too have other clubs...what bonds us together is the fact that we love the game, all of us. I don't care if someone supports some 'rival' team, we all love the game and let that be, the be all and end all. Football is a force for good...not division
So glad he didn't score. Would of been even worse if so
Had he scored, thousands more would have died
In the first world war, after folk began to realise the horror of it all, there was a song called "Take me back to dear old blighty." (back to dear old Britain) In which the lyrics say
about going home, "Liverpool, Leeds or Birmingham, I just don't care!"
What's my point? It's this.
The fences at Hillsborough and other grounds at the time were put up to stop people getting on the pitch and causing trouble , the side fences to stop rival fans fighting.
The post war generations forgot in many cases that people died so they could enjoy life, travel, going to football etc.
British soldiers, nurses and allies suffered, so that children and future generations wouldn't have to.
Post war, going to a football match was a peace time activity, and rival fans could mix without fighting. (which they did in big numbers!)
The men and women coming back from war were just happy to be away from the vile horror, it didn't really matter which city or town you came back to at first, it was home.
So everyone who has picked a fight with a rival fan is in part responsible for what happened at Hillsborough and Heysel.
Of course the police and grounds were inadequate, and disgusting lies were told, but fans fighting fans and making non- fans nervous, disrespects previous generations without whom we would be trying to survive Putin, rather than make jokes about Boris!
🕯🔦💡
And he was that traumatised by this tragic loss of life, of fans that paid his wages and bought his big house and put his kids through posh schools that after all this he felt it necessary to align himself with betting syndicates and (allegedly) take money to throw football matches - some of which were for Liverpool. Everything he did during this time is completely negated by the actions that followed. There are no words. JFT96 and may karma be swift Brucie.
you are a complete dickhead.
@@neilwhitaker6284 and you my friend are ignorant uninformed.
@@soundbeings1 I'm a sinner and I'm not going to judge a beautiful but flawed man as I haven't walked a mile in his shoes. He was my hero as a boy and he is still a hero to me. The dude is a veteran of the Rhodesian Bush war, doesn't get more based than that ya pillock
I have to add this Man also was in war and seen many friends die ....
I've never heard any team mate of Bruce say that they believe the allegations. Many still do guest speaking with him. David Hodgeson recently said in an interview that it was not true and Bruce wouldn't have thrown games in a million years. Tells you all you need to know when all his team mates stood by him.
Okay
Terrible indeed.
This guy has a South African accent
Wow is that all you can say? By the way Brucie is Rhodesian, DICKHEAD !!!

I remember this guy was screaming at the crowd at one point to get off the pitch, maybe because he was bribed to let in 3 goals that day.
Just one of these glory supporting Irish people what call themselves fans sick of hearing about this garbage far worse has happened rip to the Bradford fire victims

what a terrible day for all the people who lost loved one
people keep blaming the police for the problem

who turned up without any tickets why is that?
I can't believe that you're so behind on the news of 6 years ago lol
Kenny Dalglish , was the only Liverpool FC representative that attended every 96 Funerals
How many did you attend Bruce
Ill give you a clue buddy
NONE..................................................
Why should he?
He didn't know them personally so why would he
He actually did attend some funerals along with other players kenny dalglish and his wife went to every one however this took a massive toll on kennys mental health (as u can imagine) but to say Bruce didn't attend any funerals is wrong
Dalglish did NOT attend all 96 funerals as the following proves............... "He also speaks of the aftermath of the disaster where he personally attended the vast majority of the funerals of those who had died. "We made sure somebody with Liverpool connections was at every funeral and I think the families really respected that," Dalglish says."
What a liar Bruce is he carried on playing 1st time and told him get back over fence
One of the worst top flight keepers ever...
I don’t know why people hate this legend. He could easily be the most successful goalie in English Football history. He made a mistake, maybe, but a few goalies can match his achievements and ability. By the way he just took the money but didn’t throw the games.
You ever watched him play? One of the best keepers of the 80s!!!
Also have some respect talking about the 96!!
Shane Meneer yes I did. He was a good reader of the game and organised his defence well. Despite the sometimes over the top clowning, he’s easily in the same class as the Peter Schmiechels of the world. His trophy cabinet says it all. Maybe if Brucie were English he would have earned a wee bit more respect.
You must be a troll or a clueless muppet.
Today we would call him a sweeper keeper. One of the greatest of all time.
Celtic fan, the 96 will never be forgotten, as with other football disasters. it was good but also sad to welcome Liverpool to Celtic park, the first game they played after the tragedy.
