  • Preparing for our longest offshore bluewater sailing adventure
After one and a half years of sailing our live aboard sailing catamaran around the coast of South East Asia, we are now in count down mode, preparing for our longest offshore bluewater sailing adventure ever. 1500 nautical miles across the Indian Ocean from Phuket to the Maldives. Before we go we have a long list of jobs to complete. We are grateful to Rolly Tasker sails, Phuket for supplying us with a new downwind sailing spinnaker, Cholamark boat company and Highfield boats for our new tender, and Mark Worsnop for providing Declan and Ivan with new freediving flippers.

    BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

New battery installation: "No boom?!?!? No boom today. Boom tomorrow!" To us, while no dollars may have been spared at the grocery store it looks like no body parts were savaged during installation of batteries 😊
Mocha seems quite determined to get off the tender and back on board the boat. Speaking of...."working around obstacles" thatnis exactly what it's always been like when the supervisor is staring over your shoulder 😸
There is nothing saying that once your circumnavigation is complete that you two can't return to Asia. It could just be the two of you once the roundy-round is over. And if she's still up to it Javalo (sp) would be the perfect home to journey around Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, etc.
Those were my plans, way back in the 80s. Circumnavigate a few times then pick the best/favorite area to spend a few decades chilling.
Another wonderful vlog! Always leaving me/us wanting, nah....needing... more.

Yes, of course, we should have had the boom 💥 at the appropriate time. Make it a theme. Next time..
The idea of going back there certainly appeals. One day..

At the point of watching this, you are in Maldives, so rather than saying "good luck and fair winds", well done TKC crew for what seems to have been a smooth and well sailed passage.
Although I didn't watch all the lives actually "live", I did keep up with the passage and enjoyed the entire content throughout. Thank you for that effort of communication, it was so much appreciated (with thanks due also to Andre Pietsch for setting you up with Starlink!).
The next chapter beckons and although Ivan will miss his friends greatly, as does Declan miss Channelle, you all missing Finn of course and Thailand generally, the world is that much smaller with the like of instant messaging, texts, UA-cam etc. In fact I follow your adventures far more than I do my siblings (although we have always been distant, metaphorically) and count y'all as friends whom are present in my thoughts every day.
Enjoy Maldives and here's looking forward to sharing a little of that beautiful part of the world with y''all, a sea we had the fortune spend a couple of weeks (two years running) when we honeymooned and holidayed in Mauritius (are you going to stop off there on your travels?).
    All the best!

If it is hard to leave and say goodbye, that means you loved where you were. It would suck to be saying TG we are out of there. 😂😂 "This is why we cannot have nice things"... Though Javelot is faithfull and nice!!
Nice goodby trecking, Rachel and Declan.
Incredible adventurer, Jon Sanders! Was he alone? Brave but a bit lonley, no?
Thanks to the credit card delay, you've got a nicer tinder, some repairs and the Kiwi Boys could have more time of their favourite activities on Thailand, Muay Thai and football. So it wasn't that bad after all.
😂😂 Wise, Rachel, wanting to keep a safe distance before Rob turns the new batteries... Wonder why haha (sorry, Rob, no offence).
That massage was well deserved, Rachel, and Rob!
No wonder why you loved Thiland so much, but it was worth it the change, seeing the new paradise you reached and the great journey, with dolphins along the way, you had.
The ending, Ivan's departing his friends, made me almost cry... Nice details, the food one of the gave him and the football signed by all!! Yeah, I also hope some of them can make it to the Javelot some time. Or you can go back to Thailand. Guess Ivan is indeed in touch with them thanks to Andre.

Rachel, how about some special cats gloves (lol) for Miko in the unlikely event of leaving Javelot...? Javelot got a nice upgrade in Southeast Asia, I guess it made you guys feel more confident. I got a 950 miles passage from Tanzania back to Seychelles to prepare as well, was a very inspiring video.

After I was recommend to watch a sailing channel called the Zartara someone on that channel recommend I check out your channel also. I own a Nauti Cat Leopard 46ft boat. It is NOT a sail boat. I use the boat to go down into the Caribbean. I am thinking of sailing to the Pacific but no way would I use a regular boat for that sailing. So I am looking at Catamarans to do motor and sails. After watching the Zartara channel which I am glad I did I was looking at buying a new monohull . But after watch Keith and Renee and the struggles of that kind of boat I am skipping that for a Catamaran. I am going to buy new and make sure it has all the bells and whistles needed to make a long sailing.

I was there for 6 months and was staying in a older colonial British Built hotel that was owed by a Thai couple. It was like 10 dollars a night and they gave me a monthly rate, and it was absolutely fantastic. I got to know that whole family, and they treated me like one of their family, the hotel had a restaurant also and it was some excellent food. They do like to use a lot of hot spice in the food so I would have to tell them to leave some of the hot out. I still love Thai food. I spent some time at Pattaya Beach also. Dear Daniel, we are so pleased to hear from you. So sorry to learn you have been unwell, so happy to find you are on the mend. As a regular commenter, we were very concerned about your health and wellbeing when we didn’t hear from you for several weeks. As we had no other way to contact you but through the channel, we counted back only to find your last comment was a month ago which sent us into a mild panic. We feared the worst, you no longer watched our channel. 😮I’m joking of course, we were very concerned about your health. Thank you for letting us know you are ok. Rachel

2:52 doesn’t anyone notice that Ivan’s shoulder joints almost touch each other? Is this normal, or am I getting old?

Is it clever to announce to everyone interested which yacht has its crew on shore and the yacht is empty now? 🙂

So sad what happened at a mall Sydney today 6 people were murdered by a sick person that stabbed them all. A police officer did shoot and kill the bad guy. Have a great trip.
