Kept my original Star Wars trilogy on DVD despite getting blu rays, not bothered upgrading to 4k. Totally agree we should have the opportunity to have the originals.
Agree with a new hope specifically. Especially after watching 4K77. That movie is so beautiful, it’s a shame it was edited and then discarded in the way it has been. And I’m someone who grew up watching the silver box set in VHS.
Great list. You have a few of the films that come to mind when I think of bad directors' cuts, and a few new ones I now know I can skip. My honorable mention would be Mallrats. DO NOT WATCH THE DIRECTORS CUT OF MALLRATS. Do more videos like these!
I would definitely had put the Warriors on this list. There really isn't much to talk about. All it really adds are some comic book Stills that really don't make sense.
There were also some issues with the 4 altered versions of Alexander (PAL theatrical, Director’s cut, Final Cut & Ultimate Cut) like the PAL version of the theatrical cut nearly runs the same as the Director’s Cut like The battle of Gaugamela started earlier instead of the theatrical, final & ultimate cuts while the Final Cut added an intermission until Oliver Stone felt that the Final Cut was too much when he was doing the Ultimate Cut. The rest of the Star Wars original trilogy also had edited versions like the addition to CGI & newer sounds in the 2011/2019 Blu-Ray/4K/Disney+ releases. The Extended Versions to the Hobbit trilogy was criticized for its overproduced action scenes.
Great list! If pressed, yeah I’d give the theatrical cut to Donnie Darko over the director’s cut for the reasons you stated, but I honestly love them both not in spite of, but because of their differences. I have the 10 Year Anniversary blu-ray which includes both, and I love being able to choose which one I want to watch.
9 out of 10 here I agree with you, but Donnie Darko's director's cut is a lot better for me. Even the music is better. Love that you are diversifying your content. What's your opinion on the director's cut of Butterfly Effect (my personal favorite time travel movie of all time)
The worst one for me was The outsiders the complete novel. It wasn't the extra footage though that ruined it,it was they changed most of the music score and added rock and roll songs and it ripped the guts out of the movie.
My top 10 extended/directors cuts 10. Deadpool 2: The Super Duper Cut 9. Amadeus: The Directors Cut 8. X-Men: Days of Future Past: The Rouge Cut 7. Spider-Man 2/3 Extended Cuts 6. Walk The Line Extended Cut 5. Doctor Sleep Extended Cut 4. Terminator 2: Judgement Day- Special Edition 3. The Godfather: The Complete Epic 2. "Untitled" The Almost Famous Extended cut 1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions Honorable Mention: A Star Is Born The Encore My 10 worst 10. Both Avatar alternate versions 9. The Wizard of Oz (Minor things including changing the black and white to beige and some other things I won't get into detail about) 8. Batman V. Superman: Ultimate Edition (Hated the theatrical cut, the extended cut is better but I still hate it) 7. Apocalypse Now: Redux 6. Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers: The Producers Cut 5. Pearl Harbor: Directors Cut 4. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: Extended Edition 3. E.T. 20th anniversary Special Edition 2. Terminator: Salvation Directors Cut 1. Star Wars The original Trilogy Special Editions
I like the director's cut of Donnie Darko to get more details if you've see the theatrical. Opening song was better in the theatrical but I like both. I wish He would have left in were the bunny guy says sorry.
I completely agree with AN:Redux. It’s just too much and the final cut really trims the fat. Donnie Darko on the other hand, I much prefer the directors cut.
I love Donnie Darko directors cut, but I do miss the some of the songs that were replaced.Richard Kelly really needs to make a comeback. He’s been in directors jail too long for The Box.
The only probables with Donnie Darko theatrical cut the music was compromised. The music is totally different which Richard Kelly wanted - I hear ya tho! The theatrical is magical
I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan, & I call "The Special Edition" versions of the original trilogy The Ruined Edition. & then with the 4k release, they ruined it even more?!? Yikes! I also don't like the Directors Cut of Amadeus. & that's the only version you can on BlueRay, & I fear it'll be the same when/if they ever release it on 4k. I love the theatrical version!
As I'm heavily into Best Picture Oscar winners, my candidate for worst director's cut of a Best Picture winner is Amadeus. The director's cut adds 20 unnecessary minutes, including a failed attempt by Mozart's wife Constanze to seduce Salieri to advance her husband's career that changed its MPAA rating from PG to R but did nothing to advance the story; yet only the director's cut is available on Blu-ray. Tom Jones is a close second as Tony Richardson actually cut seven minutes from the original movie; though most DVDs (rare enough already) were of the director's cut, Criterion thankfully put both on its Blu-ray edition.
Once upon a deadpool was hilarious the only awkwardness was that quickly editing it down was a bit hard. They were a little too conservative in how much gore they held back and the editing of the profanity should have gone more in the tv snakes on a plane edit route. All and all the original is better with the dramatic bits and less restrained action but the humor of once upon a deadpool was great
I kinda enjoyed Once Upon A Deadpool on account some of the added scene was quite funny and add to some of the Joke in the original. Edit: But agree the other Editions on the Listed ruined the Film.
Hate to be a pedant, but... the director of Brazil is Terry Gilliam. There is an ‘i’ between the ‘ll’ and the ‘a’ which IS pronounced. So it’s Gill-EE-am. Thanks.
The SE of RotJ was just as damaging as that of ANH. I mean, Jedi Rocks??? UNWATCHABLE! And it's good to hear someone else call out the inferiority of Apocalypse Now Redux-- what a long boring mess.
Oh it is going to drive me crazy until I see that theatrical cut of PAYBACK. I saw it in theaters, but I don't remember the differences!!!!! Lol Thank you for mentioning BRAZIL. Whenever anyone mentions that movie (that I love) the song gets stuck in my head.... BRRAZILLLLL ...Where hearts were entertaining June. 😁 But seriously the whistling part gets sooooo stuck in my head and I whistle and whistle some more ...
Remember the studios used Trigger words to get you to buy like New And Improved or Deluxe Edition then Directors Cut with could mean the directors vision on one hand then others saw it just to add footage for what we call click Bait Today. I totally agree Greddo bit the dust han put hin down 🤪🤪🤪🤣🤣🤣Good Video The Abyss finally added the wave sceen that was omitted in theater witch created confusion at the end. The best in my opinion is ironically Alien 3 extended cut. Obviously It had major problems as a Whole but it really does improve it considerably. When I saw Alien 3 in the theater. I remember towards the end when the two prisoners run into each other and one says who's the wanker. Then a man in the audience says. The people who made this movie. Everyone was dupped by the studios Misleading trailer. Then top it off Ripley does the Nestea plunge. Nestea was a commercial that had people doing a fall into a pool because of how great the Tea was.Last part 1970s early 1980s. By the time Alien 3 was made in England it was a decade done commercial and may not have played in England 😷🙂😎
That singing scene in Return of the Jedi...🤢

I already knew Star Wars is gonna be on here, theses are some great choices!
Agree with a new hope specifically. Especially after watching 4K77. That movie is so beautiful, it’s a shame it was edited and then discarded in the way it has been. And I’m someone who grew up watching the silver box set in VHS.
awesome glad you made a follow up!

Great video topic! Way to search for original content I don’t believe I’ve seen this one on UA-cam before.
Great analysis.
Glad to see Donnie Darko made the list. Absolutely despised the director's cut.
Great 👍

Butterfly Effect is a good one. I prefer the happier ending, but the alternate ending is worthy of checking out. It just makes the movie so dour.
The worst one for me was The outsiders the complete novel. It wasn't the extra footage though that ruined it,it was they changed most of the music score and added rock and roll songs and it ripped the guts out of the movie.
Completely agree about Donnie Darko.

I find myself agreeing with you on everything xD

Jack Dennis Yeah the music is one thing that threw me off. I was so confused the first time I saw the directors cut.
Live free or die hard was more than extra blood and language it had a different ending. It felt more like a die hard movie.
The only probables with Donnie Darko theatrical cut the music was compromised. The music is totally different which Richard Kelly wanted - I hear ya tho! The theatrical is magical

I agree 100% on payback that’s why i kept my original dvd
Um...the "Love Conquers All" cut of BRAZIL was the theatrical release.
No it wasn’t.
The theatrical cut of Bad lieutenant is superior to the version that’s on the dvd and blu-Ray. It’s the same film, but with different music.
Good pick!
"The maclunkey" made me laugh out loud. What a silly thing to add to Star Wars.
Hate to be a pedant, but... the director of Brazil is Terry Gilliam. There is an ‘i’ between the ‘ll’ and the ‘a’ which IS pronounced. So it’s Gill-EE-am. Thanks.

People have talked about starwars a lot but it should be the number one worst director's cut for sure.
Oh it is going to drive me crazy until I see that theatrical cut of PAYBACK. I saw it in theaters, but I don't remember the differences!!!!! Lol

I get that tune in my head as well.
Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 director’s cut is horrible. Ruins the ending of the second best movie in the franchise. Come at me internet
I agree 100% actually
I've not seen any version of this film, I stopped watching them after 1998's Halloween H20.
The Warriors (1979)
Where's your "best"? Couldn't find it on the description box.
Sorry forgot to list it:

The "Directors Cut" of TROY is terrible ... they changed the music and totally ruined it!
mhmm If it ain't broke don't fix it

I know it is not a great movie by any means, but Sex Drive OMG.....horrible 😵
