More than family drama, I´d say it´s village wide drama... as for the plot, well... you´ll be pretty lost during the first couple of arcs. Hell, you probably will be lost till season 2 starts. Flowers don’t always means that something is happy or picturesque, flower has their own language and depending on what flower is being used it can even have a hidden meaning
Popularly used in anime is the Lycoris Radiata aka the red spider lily, equinox flower, corpse flower or as its name in Japanese; higanbana or manjushage and are symbolic of “final goodbyes” typically someone or something dying

    • @mikidream7314
      @mikidream7314 Рік тому +5

Yep, for exemple in the first Tokyo Ghoul opening, they appear somewhere in the background in a sneaky meaningful way and it becomes an recurring theme in the anime.
They appear in so many other shows too from Demon slayer to Dororo.
The meaning of the Lycoris Radiata in the japanese culture is explained in the Jigoku Shojo (Hell Girl) show, an anime I'd recommend, it's quite underrated as an horror show.
I find the flower so pretty but in anime it's almost as ominous as the Dead-mom hairstyle xD
In short, don't trust too much anime with flowers and/or butterflies in the opening/endings, especially if among said flowers are red spider lilies!

Mystery vs truth. Having faith in yourself and others is not always an easy path to walk. An awesome series with many twists and turns.

This is an anime where everyone is a "villain" at one point per say. Its up to you to piece together the truth behind the overarcing mystery with the clues given over seperate self contained arcs. The characters are all so good, esp for a horror. You come to understand and empathise with them and root for them to escape the cycle of tragedy.
The plot: Higurashi is set in 1980's Japan in a rural village Hinamizawa. When Keiichi Maebara moves there from the city of Tokyo, he quickly becomes fast friends with his classmates, all seems well. It all takes a horrific turn when the village's annual cotton drifting festival arrives and Keiichi learns that previous years there have been murders and disappearances on that same night. All seeming to be connected to the village's worship of their local guardian deity, Oyashiro. The further Keiichi digs, the deeper he falls as he soon begins to question who and what he can trust.
This is a story of trusting and believing in your friends. Overcoming past traumas and current problems by confiding in one another, rather than dealing with it by yourself. The value of empathy and understanding each other, and reaching out to help. There truly is a beautiful and profound story, underneath this thrilling horror mystery.

Other themes constitute the birth of violence, and the role of cops (therefore the government), the military, interpersonal relationships, social hierarchy, family dynamics and trauma in said birth. There's talk about what narratives (victim blaming, stereotypes of the townsfolk etc.) are believed exacerbating desperation, distrust and yeah, paranoia as you mentioned. I feel like it's one of the few stories that manage to talk about so much with what seems to be a simple handful of characters.

This is easily my favourite horror anime! Higurashi is a great psychological show and knows perfectly how to get under slowly your skin. It's based on a set of very famous visual novels (all of which were made by a single guy Ryukishi07) and is about the mystery of a few murders in a small village set in the 1980s. Honestly, it's best to go in as blind as possible, given the show is mainly built on horror and mystery.
The show can be a bit hard to get into especially as someone new to anime since it loves to slowly build the tension instead of going 0 to 100 in the first episode, and I love that. If you don't mind a slower paced horror, Higurashi is the best you can get for horror in this medium.
Also, the first two seasons of the show cover the entire story from the visual novels. You can stop at after these seasons if you want. The Rei and Kira seasons (3rd and 4th openings) are basically spin-offs covering what-if situations. They recently made new sequels (5th and 6th openings) to the finished story but the reaction from the fans was pretty polarizing. Some loved it just as much as the original seasons, some think it ruins a classic story.

in terms of horror anime... hm. I think you're going to struggle to find a whole lot of openings that reflect the horror genre at the forefront, because a lot of horror anime are either blended with other genres that define the anime more heavily, or they have the horrific element as a twist that sneaks up on you. the closest thing I can think of for horror-forward anime is stuff by Satoshi Kon, with the only TV series being Paranoia Agent (the rest are movies, like Paprika or Perfect Blue) and even then, that's much more psychological, as the name Paranoia Agent probably suggests. tbh, if you want dark stuff and horror, I'd suggest watching Akira... there are some scenes in that which are genuinely uncomfortable to watch, and stick in your mind for a long time after you see them... and it's _because_ the work is well crafted.
also... Dorohedoro fits. though it's much more like... it has campy slasher and body horror elements. like, it's a ton of fun on the surface, and the campy slasher vibes are part of that, but then below the surface, there may be real horror brewing in the underbelly of the plot. but that's all part of the mystery elements as things get deeper. idk, it's hard to explain, but it belongs in the discussion. tbh, I think you'd find more horror in manga than anime... then I'd be recommending Junji Ito right away.

Without spoiling anything specifically, every story starts out all "this is me and my friends, and we have a great life together!" but then something happens that makes one of the characters start becoming distrustful of the others and it keeps happening until it spirals completely out of control and people start dying
    Rinse, repeat, Higurashi

I love this anime! The first murder horror anime I've watched and it gave me nightmares the first time I watched it lol. Season 1 and season 2 (Kai) are serious and follows the plot and that plot gets more interesting as you continue watching. It's got some mystery and it's got an interesting way of showing you the answer: s1 has the question arcs where you don't get what's going on and s2 has the answer arcs with the explanations. The story is about a town with a dark secret - it looks peaceful until their town festival where someone goes missing and someone else goes dead.
The others (Rei and Kira) are specials which meant most of it are more like extra episodes. Rei has a sort of sequel to the series arc that is also dark and Kira has more random fun stories (that's why the OP is more happy than all of the other songs). I guess in a way you don't need to watch these to understand the full story. (It also got the pool episode and a lot of fanservice heavy stuff that you may or may not want to post on your channel lol)
Gou and Sotsu are new and are the actual sequel series to the main story. Long time fans of the show (like me) never saw it coming and they were advertised as remakes instead of as an actual sequel. It's gotten mixed reactions for what it... did to the story. It's definitely gorier.
"Who am I rooting for?" All of them. Once you understand the story you'd wish they all get their happy ending.
(The series set in the same universe, Umineko no Naku Koro ni, also have an anime but it was so terrible that fans want to pretend it doesn't exist. It's got a good OP and ED song though).

I feel a lot of the "mixed" reactions to GOU and SOTSU were by fans who were absolutely convinced those two seasons were finally going to connect Higurashi to Umineko... and they ended up being flat out wrong, so they disparaged those seasons to save face.

  • @RoseForEverafter

I’ll leave a very vague explanation of the show under the cut so you can see if you want to-no specifics, but general info on the plot that will hopefully get you interested in watching!
    ……..
Two words you need to know to understand the show: time loops.
The basic premise is that the main characters are a group of school children living in a town with a dark secret that keeps causing them to die, and every time they do, the events start over so they can try to make different choices and prevent the deaths. However, only one girl realizes what’s happening.
Season 1 contains the Question Arcs: each is 3-4 episodes and covers one time loop.
Season 2 is the Answer Arcs: you see all the loop versions from S1 from different perspectives that explain what forces outside of the friend group caused things to happen the way they did. And with all her gathered knowledge, the girl tries yet again to save her friends and break the loops.
Rei and Kira are more lighthearted side stories not considered part of the main plot. I’d recommend watching Rei if only because it brings up some interesting philosophical discussion, but Kira is really just there for fanservice.
Gou was originally marketed as a remake, but as it goes on you realize that’s not the whole story. Sotsu is the second season of the “remake” and (as of now) the finale to the whole show.

Not only do I absolutely love the music, but by the time you get to the end of that particular season that particular song takes on a completely different meaning - the lyrics actually mean something.

Higurashi is the psychological mystery horror like The Shining or Get Out
Only the first two seasons forms the main story of Higurashi.
The first season leaves you with questions while the second season provides you answers.
The third season contains some optional story which is optional as said.
The fourth season contains parody episodes (that's why it's opening was happy and fun)
The last two recent seasons is sequel to main story that provides a new mystery.
The fifth season provides questions and last (sixth) season provides answers.
However this last two seasons got mixed reviews because the last season ruined the potential the fifth season had. So it's not compulsory to watch this two seasons too.

This anime is effectively the equivalent to watching "the Ring" for the first time, except every 2-3 episodes is a new movie that throws you for a loop.
Also the openings give away about as much as telling you that "the Ring" is about a VHS or "Blair Witch project" is a student film about a pair of kids going camping.
Also I think the Ni Kira opening is either meant to troll new audience members, or it was part of the wave where they basically took a break from the horror part to just have slice of life anime parts for the characters, I can't remember.
You are kind of right in that you don't really root for any one character, but it requires explaining the premise. But I don't think I spoil anything if I explain it as, they are basically folk stories about various yakashi or ghost spirits of Japan that do things to people and that's why it seems to work like it does.

I think if you watch the first episode blind, you'll understand the theme and tone of Higurashi in a nutshell. You will _undeniably_ be very confused about halfway through the first season; don't worry, that's perfectly normal and as intended. By the end of the first season, the structure of the show _should_ become more clear.
It is a masterful series both from a narrative _AND_ meta-structural standpoint, but is definitely not for everyone. I had to drop it myself at a certain point, not from the content, but from the structure and pacing. And this coming from someone who thoroughly _enjoyed_ Endless 8 (people who know what that means, know what that means). I do intend to pick it back up eventually, but my adult life has left not as much room for anime (much less revisits of older anime) in my schedule.

I am so surprised and happy to see this reaction! I love Higurashi, it is my favourite anime ever along with Attack on Titan. It is definitely something you want to go in blind for, but I'll answer a few of the questions you had without spoiling anything. Season 1 and 2 are adapted from a visual novel and are the original story. Season 3 and 4 are short side stories that aren't as related to the original, pretty much filler. Season 5 and 6 are a direct sequel to the first two, the idea came from the original author but he wasn't involved in writing them.
It is a very dark show, some scenes in the later seasons even had to be censored, but as you saw it also has very wholesome moments, the duality is a big part of the appeal. Story wise it has incredible writing, similar to Attack on Titan where nothing makes sense until it all does, with unbelievable foreshadowing that makes a re-watch just as enjoyable (which would make it better for us if you react to it).
It's hard to explain the plot at all without spoilers, but the story has lots of different arcs, each one adds more pieces to the puzzle and teaches you more about the different characters and the overall story. The mystery and suspense draw you in immediately and keep you watching, I binged the whole show in a few days pulling all nighters just to find out what was going on. The story is also very emotional and I guarantee you will love it based of what I've seen of your reactions.
There aren't many reactors that have stuck with this show and I would love it if you picked it up soon! It is definitely a show that will do well with reactions, with unexpected twists we want to see your face for and an intricate story you can theorize about, just your thoughts on the opening were interesting for someone who knows the whole story. Sorry this kind of turned into rambling, but I love Higurashi and could probably talk about it for hours.

  • @ElYoinkySploinky
    @ElYoinkySploinky Рік тому +1

12:46 - To answer that question I'll just say that the anime is an adaptation of a visual novel in which has many possibilities of how events can go down. So like in each season we get several episodes seeing things from different perspectives, or things happening in different order. However, all this does is make you ask more questions, which doesnt really get answered until season 2, but even then you get more questions. And the 2020 higurashi is not a remake as some were led to believe when it first released, i know alot of people and youtubers made the mistake of thinking they could go in with the remake and not watch the original.
To keep it simple, the show wants you to piece things together yourself.
On a side note the author of this series got tasked with writting the story for the new silent hill game.

She just want happiness but there is one problem that's called "Oyashiro sama's curse" ( oyashiro sama is that girl with purple long hair). That means if characters get it, they will be like in drugs, started thinking that there are maggots in their bodies and have illusions that they are getting out of thieir body and they think that only way to endure it is by killing somebody. And last season is the same but Satoko (that girl with short yellow hair) will get the same power as Rika. Satoko's goal is to not let Rika go to other school by making plans how to kill her. Satoko tried to go to high school in gou season but Rika wasn't helping her to study as Satoko wanted, Rika was just talking to other girls and Satoko was thinking that rika totally just ignored her. Satoko meet Eua san (Somebody like Oyashiro sama but evil one) and she gived her power to live in loops like Rika, however, Rika didn't know that and Satoko was planning to kill her to stay in Hinamizawa so she can stay with her. At the end they were killing each other when Rika figured out that she lives in loops too, but they maked desicion that Rika will go to her High school and Satoko would wait one year for Rika to go back.

It’s kind of like a psychological murder mystery series, mostly grounded in reality but with some supernatural elements but it rarely shows up. Word of advice, do not start with the new series, it is a sequel and spoils the twist as early as episode 2. It’s even considered unnecessary since it overrode the happy ending the visual novels gave us. It’s also tied to another series called Umineko but that series doesn’t have a good anime so you’ll have to read the visual novel.

Horror anime can be pretty straightforward - shows like "Monster", "Another", or "Shiki" are all happy to show you the kind of story you're tuning into. But sometimes you get a show that hides its true nature for at least an episode or two, so the twists add to the fun but the opening isn't going to be the best representation of the show. The show is murder/psychological horror. The openings, were themselves, acts as a singular deception... unlike Future diary's opening which was in your face.

this anime teaches me that never takes anything for face values... always question anything and everything...

If you ever decide to watch it, I think it's good to preface that anything after the second season is entirely optional material. The first two openings you watched are of what this show's main plot covers. Opening 3 is an optional epilogue of the show mixed with some fanservice. Opening 4 is an OVA series riddled with fanservice, and is entirely skippable. Openings 5 and 6 are a sequel series that most people would agree is pretty bad, but it's still canon if you want to watch it. Whatever the case, this show is a horror mystery, and as far as the first two seasons go, it's extremely good in my opinion. Definitely best to go in blind.

You should maybe react to all "Shakugan no Shana" Ops and Eds, they're very good songs and it's kinda this style from Higurashi ^^

This is another one in my top 10 favorite anime of all time. *I generally don't like horror, but Higurashi is just too good!* I highly recommend it.
*To clarify, the first 2 seasons are a set. The third one is an OVA that adapts two more arcs from the original game.*
The 4th one is a spin-off to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the franchise that is just as happy and bright as the opening.
*The last 2 are the long awaited sequel that came out just a few years ago.* **Also, I don't request this often, Luke, but do react to the endings! Higurashi is known for having great endings. God's Syndrome, the ED for the 5th one is my favorite! 😍😍😍

When it comes to messed up anime Shinsekai Yori (from the new world) is a good option. It doesn't have openings only endings, but they are both incredible.

Higurashi is a great horror anime
The 4th OP is for a lighthearted spin off rather than the main series, it's pretty funny whiplash without context though
Would recommend the EDs as well

    No spoilers:
It's about a small town called Hinamizawa and the residents that live there more specifically the friend group you see in the openings. The main character Keiichi has moved there recently and has made several friends at the small school he's attending. The school houses all grade levels which is why their ages range.
While there, he joins a club and spends his day playing games and hanging with his friends. It's once the cotton drifting festival approaches that things take a turn, and their lives seem to spiral out of control. You can watch the 2020 ver without prior knowledge if you want to enjoy the newer graphics. Or you can watch the 2006 ver to watch from the beginning because they do make changes to the plot for reasons that will become obvious once you watch the original version. If you watch the 2006 ver then you'll get more details which will make the 2020 ver more like a sequel. (especially the second half of the show) But like i said, you can watch the 2020 ver first if you wanted and then go back to the 2006 ver to fill any missing gaps or questions you might have had.
You can skip the 2011 ver, it's mostly just filler and to make you happy for a bit with the characters. You can probably finish everything over a weekend if you like to binge. hope that helps if you haven't watched it yet.

Ah, finally, a reaction to Higurashi. Man, you are quite spot on on a lot of points you said, yet you are still far away from what's going on. That's just how the show is, the creator Ryukishi07 (real name unknown) is just a insane genius. Also the last thing you said, spirited away, it also fits well with this show, but they call it a little bit differently, but I can't get into spoiler territory. Great reaction. This anime you will either really enjoy or not enjoy at all, but I think you would enjoy it.
