That's why they call it a "carry." You're supposed to carry it with you. Also, you never know what might set off or threaten one of those dogs. Hope she's doing better.
Honestly... If words can't get through to the SIL, then this is something I think she needs to experience herself, but mainly, I think that OP needs to get therapy too if she's not really in it. Idk how to write down my thoughts hut I'll try to explain further on if someone asks.
So because SIL won't place her kid in the presence of a dangerous dog, she deserves to experience a home invasion and attempted murder? Asking someone else to trust that their dog won't maul your kid to death is a pretty big ask. Much easier to just not go near said animal. SIL can be perfectly empathetic and supportive without placing her kid in danger. If I were SIL, I might visit OP alone, while carrying a weapon. But even crated, I probably wouldn't bring the kid around.
