- Episode 398: Sit down with Francie on today's episode as she goes over the list of functionalities that the Volvo EX90 may or may not have at the time of launch. When is a product too incomplete to deliver to customers? Good questions, let's plug in to discuss.

Get the basic features and functionalities working correctly and reliably before deliver to customers. Any enhancements can be roll out as incremental updates.
Exciting times for Volvo. Looks like with the new tarrif and them moving production of the EX30 to Ghent Belgium before introducing to the US, the Polestar 3 and the EX90 being made in the South Carolina plant, that their heavy ramp up to the US market won't be until really 2025. Thx for the video. The EX90 is an exciting EV!
Without Chinese help, none of the U.S. EVs can ramp up production. They are either niche players or get stuck. Volvo most likely would be the former. They ever need to ramp up any production as their demands are so low
Give the customer the option to take it as is right now. They can wait til it's complete.
Put it out on the website as (The feature will be coming soon).
About the self driving that you had in your other podcasts. One channel put out self driving or assistance levels. One is none; two is Cruise control; three is hands free put paring attrition; four is automatic lane change with navigation; five is complete self driving.
Wait till the system can read all traffic signs and traffic lights correctly before you sit back and watch where you are going. Your drive to Colorado. You couldn't or had a hard time seeing the road would make self driving very hard. The only way self driving will work in snow is. Car has to know how many lanes are on the road. The senors need to determine where the car is on the road. This part is the most challenging.
I want to see Francie or Kyle try to do pre-mapped road navigation when snow is on the road or the street has some flooding on it.
I mean... It was kinda cute that Tesla started doing it and true they USUALLY deliver eventually... but I do NOT like the idea of this becoming standard operating procedure throughout the industry. It's concerning.
exactly, pretty much NOTHING Tesla is doing is stuff that should be adopted by any Legacy OEM (particularly Volvo). re: "It was kinda cute..." no NONE of it's cute.
My EX30 test drive was cancelled after I arrived at the dealership because the car was bricked after they tried to carry out an update and it was wired via a laptop not OTA. I bought a different make of EV, one made in Europe that has worked perfectly in the 3 months I’ve owned it and I’ve received at least 2 OTA updates since. The new EV is also a new to market one.
Extreme example - look at all the Fisker Ocean promises - updates are coming, up dates are coming, version 2.1 delivered to some cars but not all and then ooooooops we’ve declared bankruptcy so no more updates and no you won’t get the functionality we promised you, ever.
I certainly hope that it has NACS at launch....
If platform allows OTA updates, they should put cars on the road sooner, if glitches are not safe risk.
Francie great video
We take all specifications in press releases and announcements as manufacturer’s best guess and no guaranty. When it comes time to pay for the vehicle, that’s when you get a list of guaranteed specifications and decide if you want to buy. Your deposit should be fully refundable if it’s not what was promised.
To me it's better to sell an unfinished car that will be updated than a "finished" one that will never be updated. In 2013 Cadillac said the ATS was updateable and it might have been but it was never updated. In 2019 I got a Chevy Equinox with over the air updates but there were very few updates and none of the stuff I had trouble with was fixed. So it's not just EVs, both those were gas cars. For years the navigation systems in gas cars were out of date when you got them and even when an update was available it was also years out of date. For decades automakers would only update a car when there was a refresh every 3 to 5 years and development on existing ones was "frozen" a year before it went into production.
I think many EV buyers are now expecting a software car that gets better over time. However, anyone buying the first iterations of these types of cars might also expect hiccups in delivery and functionality. Back when we bought our 2015 Leaf I was not expecting it to ever get better, and was a little bummed when the connectivity that was promised was taken away… but that was a nice to have, not a need to have in our situation. Our second EV is now a ‘23 Tesla MYLR and the experience has been quite different from Nissan. I didn’t know I wanted an OTA updatable car until I had one… I also waited a few years into production as we aren’t in a financial position to take a hit on a car not being what was promised. Sorry for the long comment, but I think there are quite a few different types of EV buyers out there. While we now have the MYLR and love all the tech and functionality of that car I am also keeping feelers out for future pack upgrades to the Leaf when it needs it. Apples and oranges I know… just saying that EV owners can be very kooky and all over the map with expectations.
What’s also worrisome for Volvo as a company is that there should be ZERO faith in it to deliver EX90. The features listed here many of which you can actually get from Hondas and Toyotas YEARS ago. Yes I mean entry level Hondas have those features that work very well years ago.
This was a poor piece of content for OoS. The reservation deposit is refundable. It’s up to the buyer to decide if the product is adequately complete at time of delivery, wait, or buy another product. Volvo is being customer friendly by noting this prior to deliveries starting, so again customers can go elsewhere if desired. As vehicles become more software than hardware, they’re essentially never “done.”
Love the EX90 but the fact that it doesn't have an integrated panoramic roof shade is a deal breaker for me who lives where it's above 33 celsius most of the year. I'm not going to pull over and jump into the backseat to put up a folding shade. It's ridiculous for a vehicle at this price point.
Would you (anyone) buy a house without a roof? What if the builder promised that at some undefined time in the future there may or may not be a roof upgrade option? I mean, it's a beautiful house with great walls and a nice yard. Do you really need a roof? Sure, the brochure has a picture of a house with a roof and the literature promotes the durability and safety of the roof but unfortunately the roof is not available and may never be available. Do you feel cheated for buying a house without a roof or are you cool with it and telling yourself that you prefer the unobstructed views of the sky and don't really need a roof?
Cheers Francie
I’m guessing they are taking a big hit with tariffs and having to shift EX30 production with more significant delays, so they are pushing out the EX90 ASAP no excuses. Regardless, that is quite an extensive list of missing features at launch for an $80000+ vehicle.
ZEEKR are great also part of geely Volvo crazy times 😆
Yeah, I was afraid of these kind of problems with the EX90, considering the same sort of problems with the EX30
I’d say just don’t purchase unfinished vehicles but all you have to do is look at the gaming industry to see that doesn’t work. Everyone hates micro transactions publicly but they making money hand over fist. So people are obviously buying them. People can hate unfinished vehicles, but the FOMO will somehow win. Just be patient, they’ll make more.
The question is whether they have already received payment for these functions from any customers. If not, it's just silly PR, if so, they should compensate those customers. In this case, it is simply misleading advertising.
The Volvo is over a year late due to software problems.
Does Volvo have OTAs and can you purchase features later like Tesla? With a Tesla you can buy FSD or power boost with an in app purchase. If you don't have to buy a feature at the time of purchase then it's perfectly fine if the feature doesn't work yet, buy it when it does work well enough for your needs.
Good afternoon
"THIS IS AN OUTRAGE...!!!" (old man curmudgeon voice)
Meanwhile Zeekr has fully functional cars. Pathetic. Deliver completed cars, period.
Zeekr has enormous software problems in Europe. Just go into forums and you'll hear the same issues. Glitches and bugs that cripple the car and the smart functions.
Not sure why you are singling out Volvo and because you are, shouldn’t you have a Volvo representative available to respond?
I guarantee that Volvo isn't interested in these types of discussions. Why haven't we heard anything from Volvo about the super buggy EX30.
