    Also a very good thing to know about shield: If you're anticipating an A followup or are otherwise wanting to instant shield, tapping the shield input instead of holding it is way safer. If you hold it, you'll get fataled by the b followup, while if you just tap it and let go before the b followup would hit you, you'll still counter A but only get normal hit by B, which doesnt lead into any sort of combo.

      This depends on how much moon gauge you have. If you have under 40ish percent moon gauge, you will still get fatal countered for tapping D.

    A lot of projectiles have follow ups. If you don't do the follow up that leaves enough time to react to shield B. Usually with a 3c to simply blow it up

    One thing you didn't mention as an option when you shield an attack is to do nothing when you expect your opponent to counter shield you. This is more of a hard read but still worth having as an option as if correct you should get an easy punish on their shield whiff.

    • @dixiesama
      @dixiesama 2 роки тому +7

      It's not a "hard read", you can just do it and completely ignore the RPS. There is no outcome where you take damage for doing it. Worst case you come out with severe frame disadvantage (e.g. if you shield a 2A), but often it's negligible. In fact, if you shield > nothing for certain things (e.g. Arc's 5[c]), you're actually so advantageous you can punish with throw.

    • @qaenyin
      @qaenyin 2 роки тому +2

      @@dixiesama to add to this, shield has no recovery after it's successful. If you shield into nothing, as long as the shield actually caught an attack, it immediately recovers once the active shield duration ends (though this is often at frame disadvantage, there is no window where you're unable to move but not still shielding).

    • @DoctorSlash
      @DoctorSlash 2 роки тому

      @@dixiesama Can't your opponent still B+C you after your shield? But yeah its a pretty safe option still, not really a hard read.

    • @dixiesama
      @dixiesama 2 роки тому +1

      @@DoctorSlash No. When you shield something, you go into the shield guessies mode for exactly 25 frames. If another attack would hit you in this time, it is automatically shielded (e.g. counter B+C or multi-hitting moves) and the duration is reset. After that 25f, the shielding player is in neutral state and can do anything.
      There are edge cases where the opponent can time a B+C to catch throw startup if their attack's recovery after being shielded lasts longer than that 25f (e.g. Arc/Shiki 5[c]), but the timing is usually tight as hell.
      For a typical attack, tapping shield and doing nothing has the downside of being rather disadvantageous in terms of frame data.

  • @iskamag
    @iskamag 2 роки тому +2

    I'd like to also mention that shielding is _not_ a counter to zoning.
    You can easily react to their vanish, or thrust MD into crossup/mixup if they do nothing. The latter is much more favorable as it's completely safe to fail, but requires full moon meter.

  • @Nywraper
    @Nywraper 2 роки тому +1

    On the Vanishing Shield follow-up it's almost sometimes better to take the hit then to try to react and get countered

  • @NubTactics
    @NubTactics 2 роки тому +3

    Some characters can use the B+C get out of jail follow-up on a shielded and punish the A/B shield follow-up on reaction, even midscreen.
    B+C's cancel window is very early, and with characters like Ciel, you can jump cancel into 214 A/B/C. Warc can jump cancel into 214 C, and Kouma can get a fat punish with jump cancel 6BD into an EX Edge. I don't think every character has a viable punish though, so it's worth more experimentation.
    From my experience, if your opponent shields a fast move such as a jab and tries to B follow-up on it, invincible reversals are a pretty reliable counter to them.

      i kinda feel that, but then shield would be pretty ass as a defensive option against pressure, which seems like part of the point of the buffs to it since it was similarly risky against pressure in AACC. i think it would be better to bring back gold throws; if you throw a shield you get a ground bounce into a combo.

    I don't know if it is the same for every characters but there are combos that will work from the 1st shield interaction into A follow-up but won't work if the shield RPS has more than 2 interactions to it, as if the hitstun was different from the 3rd interaction forward.

    If you delay A or C shield follow-up slightly midscreen, you can actually turn around and punish B+C. Very difficult and I have not gotten it consistantly at all because if you do it on time, you clash. If you do it to late, you whiff.

    What do you think about the idea of throws giving a combo on fatal counter? I think it’s a decent idea to cut down on shield RPS cuz throw damage isn’t really enough to discourage people from slamming on it and the BC OS is pretty expensive, but I also get that there could be more tech found and also makes Arc and Warc feel kinda less special.

    I'm not sure as to the whole cast but from what i've seen alot of characters have a 5[c] overhead and what i've been doing against players that hold shield during a jailing block string is to do something like jab 2c 2b 5b 5[c] to make them explode on shield while also being a good distance away from getting counter hit because of the block pushback. another option to also use is jump cancelling the last regular normal in the jailing string to blow them up(i only play kouma btw idk if everyone can jump cancel all of their normals). b+c countering is my go to against getting wakeup shielded though as its a great way to get out of the rps game. this whole thing is reminiscent of reversal edge in sc6 as everybody complained about it being abuseable because nobody spent the time to lab it out and figure out that there are consistent relatively safe options you can use to bait it out and make them explode when they try it

      One thing I noticed immediately thats different is that you can't use directional inputs with certain button combos. So for example if you map dash to a button, you still have to hold forward to get the dash. And if you want to moon drive cancel, it has to be with no direction even if there is no valid overlapping input anyway. Hope that helps
