Springfield Prodigy: 5" Upgraded...mostly

- Well the 5" Prodigy is almost complete! Just waiting on a few more last minute parts to come in. But in the meantime, everything else is installed and functioned checked on the bench. Upgraded with parts from EGW, 10-8 Performance, Wilson Combat, and Dawson Precision.
This video shows what I swapped and a couple of side improvements.
Another in-depth, detailed, and informative video. You’re quickly becoming somebody in the Prodigy community.

Triarc slide stop is nice

@@nobodytraining yeah it fit my 5in perfectly. Just a light sanding to take a small burr off. Only part I've replaced. Gonna get the atlas or Dawson guide rod. Don't care for the 2 piece

I have rods from both companies. Been satisfied with both. Even when I tweaked them! I just assume that everything needs some love lol

Great evaluation of the slide stop having to do with the frame to slide wiggle.
Thank you for a very fine video and run down of the parts you used. I have a Prodigy and I guess I got a "good" one. It has been running flawlessly. I did use a micrometer on the chamber and it measures the same as my Sig P226 chamber, which gave me much peace of mind. Good shooting and sunny days!

ditch the shock buff. Use the appropriate spring with your load.
95% of accuracy comes from the barrel maker and fitting / lockup.
Slide pin should be .199 to .200. Pin is pushing on the link / barrel upwards into the slide. Tighter barrel lockup. Just as an oversized/match barrel lugs are cut to press against the slide stop pin when the slide is closed.
Replacing sear and hammer, always check sear engagement on hooks.

Got the Tier 1 Centurion in. It’s a bit snug on the draw, but it will be ok after a period of time. Compatible with G Code and ALS. Had no issues getting that ALS fork on to fit.
Very nice! Tell us about the options you choose on it? I think that model of holster makes you get the light, right? Which model did you choose? STI?
@@nobodytraining correct. You have the option for an optic cut, as well. You can choose the thickness of the kydex, as well as several different prints. Level 2 retention, which is what I wanted. The 5” STI is what they advised for the 5” Prodigy.
@@matthewvolpe7515 nice! I got a feeling I’m going to be stuck looking for a while. Found that RDR gear modifies the 6390 (I think that’s the model) to fit the Prodigy. But it has the light. I don’t want to run a light
@@nobodytraining I didn’t want to run a light, either. That’s the issue with that holster; it will only work with a light mounted. I made the mistake of getting a holster without a light for my Emissary, so here we are!

A DLC treatment runs about $ 290. That's how much I paid when I built my last 2011 about a year ago.

Hey Justin! Thanks for watching. Yes, fitting is required. The thumb safety has a little bit of extra material on it and that has to be removed so it can barely fit past the sear. This is one of the areas that if you take off too much the safety will not work so go slow and check it a lot. Only tools needed are a file (smooth cut with a safe edge is my preference) and a sharpie so you can see we’re the sear is hitting the safety. I just got my 5" prodigy yesterday and went through about 250 rounds, no obvious problem so far, but after I got back and took it apart to clean, I was having a hard time getting the safety to stay in, it walk itself out after I switch it about 20-30 times and that was enough to get stuck on the safe position, did you have any experience about this?
Ya that’s a pain the first couple of times with the ambi. I like to take a wood door shim and place it under the right side safety to support it. Then I tap the left side till flush with the frame. If both sides aren’t flush to the frame then it will walk out. I learned about that problem just like you did 🤣
@@nobodytraining almost the same thing I did when I tap it into place, but apparently it still gets loose.
Question: was a real pain to get out the first time you took it apart? It should have been. If it was easy then maybe it wasn’t fit quite right. If swearing was involved as you took it apart then it’s ok and you are close to getting it set. Mine was a forceful finesse since it is an interference fit with not only the left and right but also inside the grip safety. Take a close look at all 3 components and you can see what it really has to do to come together. But the key is good right side safety support.
I have a question, have you purchased the Dowson tool less guide rod 1056? I thought it was compatible without using the original weapon bushing
Apparently I got the 1054. I don’t recall seeing the 1056. But then again I’ve looked at so many parts lately they are all a blur! But I think I like the look of the black bushing better.
Did your 10-8 slide stop “drop in”? I bought one also and it needs fitting for the gun to cycle in and out of battery.
It was pretty tight. I used JB bore paste (with oil) on the link, stop and bearing surfaces and had to work the slide to get it to go. Keep at it. Work it, clean and check and the add more paste as needed. I had to do several cycles. And a sharpie is your friend. If you want to see where things are rubbing, mark it, work the part and then see where the shiny parts are. Those are your problem areas.
Same. I just put mine n and the slide was sticking where I couldn’t even rack it. Guess Ima have to work mine pretty good too
I picked up the Wilson 70 series Bullet Proof Extractor for my 4.25” Prodigy. Did you have any issue with yours? Mine seems like it’s “too long” and won’t hold a casing at all. I did the trick to add some tension to it but it didn’t really do anything other than make it very difficult to get in and back out. Any suggestions? 🤔

This is the video that I watched. It’s an older video but good content. I had to do some filing to fit mine. Specifically filing the radius that’s just before the hook, which may be your issue as well. It seems to work on the bench but I need to get out to the range with it to make sure. To be honest, I’m going to take a 1911 gunsmithing course so I can understand it better and make better videos in the future. In the mean time, watch that vid and also compare the old extractor with the new to help give an idea of what you are possibly needing to do. I promise to be more helpful in the future. Keep at it, Joe! You’ll get it running.

wow, that's a lot of things going on, you should send it back to Springfield in the first place. For all the work and parts you purchase , do you think you should get a staccato instead ?
Definitely doing a few things lol. But everything I’m doing is optional because the gun was already running before this. So I’m just making it more reliable and comfortable. Plus, and more importantly, it’s allowing me to learn the 1911/2011 platform, which is more challenging than a Glock. I would rather learn and fix then send it back to Springfield. I’m just twisted like that ;)
I post the vids just in case there are others who are like me…scary thought. Knowing myself, if I bought a Stac, and it had any issue, I would be the guy who would try to fix it himself. It’s about the journey. Thanks for watching, Ref!

Check out the comments on the Springfield Prodigy Upgrade Update vid. I have most of the parts listed with part numbers and where I got them. I think the only one it listed might be the Atlas trigger and you can get that from atlas gunwerks

I’ve used all EGW stainless small parts in my Prodigy, most have dropped in. Thumb safety and oversized firing pin stop being the exceptions.
I’ve been impressed with EGW and the quality of their parts. Same experience with fitting thumb safety and I’m expecting to fit the FP stop when I get it along with the trigger shoe.
And it only comes in black
Check out norrells moly resin for coating. It's super easy to apply, and in my experience more durable than cerakote. The only drawback is a fairly limited color selection

I enjoy messing with stuff. I realize that it’s not for everyone and some would rather just go buy a Stacatto. But I wouldn’t learn anything from the experience.
Should’ve just bought a Staccato unless you were looking for a project. I say that because they don’t really lose value and g2g outta the box.
Wasn’t looking for a project. Just turned into one. Kinda like when you get an AR and start swapping the stock, trigger, etc. Only this had a learning curve.
Why? Why are you dissecting and experimenting on that beautiful tool. Just send it back to SA!
Firstly, thanks for watching R Mack. I appreciate it. Second, why not? I could have sent it back to SA and learned nothing. But since I enjoy tinkering and I wanted to learn about the 1911/2011 platform I figured it was worth diving into and upgrading to suit my needs. I realize that what I’m doing isn’t for everyone. And that’s fine. When I’m done, I can cerakote or blue it myself. Or send it off to get a DLC and it will be beautiful again
Springfield couldn’t get it right out of the factory. What makes you think sending it back would have yielded a good result? 2011s need to be hand fit everywhere to function properly. SA doesn’t have that time or expertise (evidenced by the number of these prodigy’s that don’t run well).
@@gunnar179 Springfield has been making reliable and well built 1911s for some time now. Most of the issues people are having are not just 2011 issues, but also exist in 1911 models as well. They have the resources and trained individuals to remedy any issue and return to the owner a working firearm. If you had firsthand experience dealing with Springfield warranty department, you wouldn't be out here needlessly bashing them. Should they have sent out working guns from the factory? Yes. But several have sent their guns in for warranty and received a fully functioning firearm upon receiving it back. I have used their warranty process on an mc operator and found it was painless and a quick turnaround. Less than 2 weeks to include travel time
Were you looking for a project gun when you bought the Prodigy?
I wasn’t looking for a project at all. It just happen to turn out that way. But it’s been a fun learning experience!
