I'm retired and not interested in growing followers. I have IG and FB, had my work in 2 galleries ( watercolor) and sell at an occasional art market. It's been fun. I love creating and since jumping into mixed media including charcoal, pastels, color pencils, and drawing I'm more intent on improving and refining my skills. But ever since the grandkids came along in the last 2 years you know where my heart went. I still create and am still learning and will forever....but my focus changed. No regrets. Love your channel and get inspired by your work. It's great you've found your niche and your advice makes sense in today's modern technology.
That is awesome! Like I said, this is definitely not the way everyone should operate in their career, it’s definitely up to what matters most to you. Congrats on being a grandparent!
You are amazing and it's so freaking unbelievable that I can see things while you are drawing it!!! It's amazing how you do this process it's like your a printer and I can see it while you're doing it I see where you are going with it before it's done
It's important if you work hard to improve your skills. Sometimes you want to work hard, and sometimes you just have to force yourself. Mastery doesn't come without effort.
I saw the drawing, I loved it. I f love ur works, and I'm starting with charcoal.. I was wondering how did u improve that much ? bcs i was told to exercise, yeah, but im not sure i'll improve if im just trying everyday without new tips or stuff like this idk If ur okay with answering, if not, do not it's okay
What do you do for references in your art? Do you typically just draw? Or use a reference of a person then stylize it? Or do you edit photos to be the exact reference for what your trying to create?
Great job. What kind of camera equipment/setup/tripods do you use? Do you use an iphone or gopro headset for your shorts? Do you just hold your smartphone with one hand and draw with the other in your shorts? Thanks for your content. For the long video do you use a different camera than your shorts?
If you're basically a beginner would you recommend starting a new instagram for sharing artwork / the creative growth process? Or trying to build upon whatever personal social media foundations you already have?
@@MadCharcoal I'm taking once a week figure drawing labs and I switched from pencil to charcoal mostly because of your work. Still haven't quite gotten as free as you but It's getting better. I'm also getting a thing about making my own watercolors and Contes for my friends. We seldom get more than 20 minutes per pose and the lighting is NOT very dramatic. a long time ago I used to start my drawings out much like you do. Sometimes I work on the computer with a Wacom tablet.
I personally don't like the squares you add.I like your art much more without rhem, but I can see why others like it. Sure thing is,it adds a personal touch, adds your signature on the artwork ,making more recognizable etc. Anyway, it's still a nice outcome and it's not a coincidence, that so many people like yourArt,keep up the good work!
@@MadCharcoal Perhaps experiment with different shapes and combinations or layers of shapes? I really like the clear sharp lines and structure of the geometry and the smoother, structured value gradients especially, and how it contrasts with the more flowing/abstract, almost dreamlike quality of the rest of the piece. Love your work!
Why does it matter how many "followers" one has online? People are losing their way today, with this need for attention, likes, followers, online. Narcissism is out-of-control today. Why would one make a video about this "topic"? And a brag to boot within the video!? So gross. Just make art, be yourself, set goals, and stop worrying about "influencing". If it was meaningful, then this would not be a "topic". Good golly.
I talk about the reasoning in the video. It isn’t for selfish gain if you know it’s necessary for career growth and selling your work, only if that’s your goal. If you’re narcissistic enough to want followers just to be liked or attention that’s your own personal problem.
I made my first charcoal drawing today, it didn't turn out as abstract but i love it. I haven't drawn in years and never was any good, but i'll draw again.
Hey josh thanks for the video, i really needed it! I never went to art school or studied anything related to design. In 2019 I bought a pad of paper including pencils and without thinking I just started drawing in the direction of portraits and I liked it. But I didn't have enough and started watching videos, reading books, buying various courses to get better. Sometime in 2022 I discovered you and was overwhelmed by your art style and wanted to be able to do it too, so a few days later I went to the art shop and bought charcoal and pastel but the first results were horrible and I didn't give up also I dont know if the quality of my work is good enough to sell. Currently thinking about it to start selling my work. I do also share my work on TikTok, Instagram and UA-cam, I never thought getting positive feedback and I would like to earn my living with it one day like you do, but it needs some time. Anyway, you bring me a lot of inspiration but try to deviate from your works and create my own without copying your works. Josh I hope that one day you will take notice of my TikTok, Instagram or here on UA-cam and give me your feedback. Thank you! 🖤🫶🏻

is there a certain length of time that's most successful for your work?
Yes I’d say 1-3 hour pieces are my best

Some artists wants to make a living with their art, sadly you need followers to get potential customers and more eyes on your artwork.
