I’ve just ordered one of these blighters. My first experience with synths was waaaaay back in 1980/81, my friend had ordered a Wasp synth, which we had loads of fun with… Then, lo & behold, out of nowhere, they sent him a second one… Temendous! I spent months, usually in a stoned stupor, playing with those things, not having a clue what I was doing but I swear it set me up with my current understanding of synths to this day. It’ll arrive tomorrow and I can’t wait to dive in. Great vid man, cheers 👍
I too bought this completely based on your video. Ordered the special edition one and can't wait for it to arrive. All your videos are awesome. Thanks for doing them!
Awesome demo! Beneath the A-106-6 XP this is my favorite Doepfer filter. And I also think Doepfer is a bit underestimated somestimes. They got some really wicked sounding modules out there...at an unbeatable price. And of course you could never be more thankful to Dieter for inventing Eurorack!!!
You have to like this guy...He's not pretending to know what he's doing. When I bought my first Pittsburgh setup the instructions stated that experimentation was the key.
I think people just say that kind of thing about Doepfer because it's the guy who has been on the block yearsss before the general population caught on. Their designs for the most part are solid, and each module does it's job well. Power system feels lacking to me, but that goes for all Eurorack. If they had flashy panels, changed up their name in secret, more people would think they're the greatest module producing shop to have ever lived. Great review btw, this was exactly what i was looking for!
Looks like an awesome filter to complement the Doepfer SEM filter in my setup. And yes, Doepfer makes great modules. Loving my basic Doepfer A100 system that I picked up to learn modular synthesis. Mine came with the SEM filter and I'd love to pick up the Wasp to complement it.
You've just made me realise I have low pass and hi pass at the bottom. Use the band pass mostly and I've never even looked at the lower section...thought it was just low pass there. I am a fool. Thanks.
My Special Ed. black and yellow Wasp just came in today. Bought it pretty much based on this vid. So far, so weird. Also built my case into a cardboard box thanks to one of your other vids. Rock on.
Ha! Last time I ever heard anyone say "Yah boo sucks!" must have been a few decades ago. I love the crazy little quotes I hear in your videos. Also interesting to hear what this module sounds like, I'd honestly never so much as once listened to it. Fun and interesting as always!
Thanks Christian! Yep, Doepfer are hard to beat - got a great collection of filters covering clean to bonkers. I really want to spend a bit of time with the A-106-5 SEM, and the A-106-6 Xpander filter...
it sounds _really_ good with a mid/side decoder (BP to mid, Lp/Hp to sides). With the mix knob less than 6-4, the lowpassed signal is present in the left ear. Above 4-6, the highpassed signal is present in the right ear. Weird amazing stereo stuff happens as the knob approaches the midrange. As always with the Wasp, there's like a billion patch-specific sweetspots. Edit: never be afraid to play with the input level settings. It feels like the most useless knob on the module, but it messes with the way the resonance behaves, making it even weirder. Yes, that's possible. Also, the filter likes square waves with a bit of PWM, not necessarily 50%.
I just bought me one of these. The special edition. It was really the only filter on my list. I do hear they fry a lot, but supposedly the repair for that is fairly easy.
That warbly aspect sounds like a cat purring to me. I am starting out on euro rack when my Arthurian boxes arrive . I WILL be getting this filter based on your demo. Doe-fer quad ADSR any comments I have the Waldorf NW1 as an oscillator waiting for installation
damn so delicious! A MI Ripples is on the way to me & I bought it with this sound in mind... I think I have to add the wasp. But don't you think it is really sad that the res got no CV? I'm not sure. (yeah, the spirit should be more on the bright side of thing, but maybe one could DIY... I don't know...) Thanks for this fine demo!!
great videos man. strictly speaking (and why should we not be strict...), exactly between the LP and HP, it's a notch filter. either side of centre, either the HP or LP is more heavily weighted.
I'm going to build my first modular soon amd this is on the top of my list of things to add. I'm thinking this thing 2 ocilator (maybe 3 to make some nice reese) an adsr (duh) vca (again duh) and what else? to get that 90s reese with the analog feel.
i agree , awesome filter for very little money. where did you get the different knobs? i see many people have different knobs on their modules. i want to do the same for a little excitement :) thanks for the demo man!
Hi, I have a wasp filter and seem to recall getting those weird sounds out of it , now I have transferred it to a Arturia Rack Brute 6, I seem to get it to do it, am I missing something?
What are you using to start and stop the sound? A standard MIDI keyboard? Or do you not need a keyboard for this? I really would like to get into this, but I don't understand a lot of things.
No keyboard, I'm just tapping the raw output of an oscillator going into a filter. Have a google about modular synths, and play with this so you can start to understand how it all goes together: petervandernoord.nl/patchwork/
Hey I know it's been a few years but these are showing up on the resale market broken; any tips on what to look for when picking up non working modules?
Yeah, it really is a keeper isn't it. This is one of the exceptions to the general rule, however. There's a reason most great filters cost 3 times as much as standard Doepfer stuff. Lame question: Where did you get those knobs? I've been looking for Davies look-alikes that fit 6mm but they're damn hard to find.
Thanks for the tip, I return to the knob question once every blue moon, but I never seem to get around to ordering. There's always some module I'd rather spend the cash on. Then there's the 6mm issue. I suppose the real question is where you can buy 6.4 to 6.0mm adapters en masse. The only ones I've ever found are in specialized guitar shops, and they cost a fortune.
Thonk sell these Davies knobs! I used them on an FCUK Continuum module. I also met him at a Maker fair, he seems like a nice guy. :) So, yeah, I'd recommend Thonk, all in all.
everytime i hear your voice i end up buying stuff
haha me too!
+1
The Pavlov Effect
Really is the most perfect radio voice 😛

Yellow cables for the WASP.
Nice demo, mate. Cheers for taking the time to do it.

Love this so much and just ordered one of the black and yellow ones. This video is def what sold me.

You make the best demo videos!

Pretty cool! I overlook Doepfer most of the time, but you are right that this is not right. Every module is special!
My Special Ed. black and yellow Wasp just came in today. Bought it pretty much based on this vid. So far, so weird.

Rock on.
+OblivionRatula Ha, nice one!
I saw the Video after buying it. But in the musical context, this filter is awesome!
i ordered now the special edition (black with yellow knobs)!can't wait for it!!!!!!
Thanks for the fantastic demo! Hitting all the key points for a filter demo. Most of the other ones are just aimless wanking around.
More videos like this, please. And by "this," I mean just you congenially chatting while showing off a module.
I totally agree! It is really fun listening to this guy!
Ha! Last time I ever heard anyone say "Yah boo sucks!" must have been a few decades ago. I love the crazy little quotes I hear in your videos.
Also interesting to hear what this module sounds like, I'd honestly never so much as once listened to it. Fun and interesting as always!
It’s a classic!! Thanks
great video! totally agree with your points about doepfer naysayers. really nailed this filter's quirks.
Thanks Christian! Yep, Doepfer are hard to beat - got a great collection of filters covering clean to bonkers. I really want to spend a bit of time with the A-106-5 SEM, and the A-106-6 Xpander filter...

Got mine yesterday, its really great!
I'm convinced. Very nice demo.
Totally awesome video, concise and informative, should be more like this.
"YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PATCH BETTER, DUDE!" I laughed.
This phrase is pretty much everything...
just like you can never have enough VCAs
My favorite video of the Doepfer Wasp. Makes me want one so bad.
The Doepfer WASP is a stunning filter module @a very reasonable price :-)
Really great demo! very clear, thanks!
That's great! Good demonstration! I will definitely order one!!
I just bought me one of these. The special edition. It was really the only filter on my list. I do hear they fry a lot, but supposedly the repair for that is fairly easy.
Thank you for the comprehensive video. Pulling the trigger on one of these and adding it to my rack. :-)
Great demo!
Great video, thank you! I've been wondering whether one of these Wasp filters is for me or not for a while now. I think you've just convinced me. :)
No worries - it's for everyone!!
wow, Zoë!! big fan of your work, nice to see we have the same taste in Doepfer VCFs haha
Just added like #668, neighbour of the beast, and followed your order, sir. 2 wasps on their way to me modula monsta. Gotta be betta in sterea.
Can't wait to get my hands on this
Ok, you convinced me, I'm getting this.
Great demo.
That warbly aspect sounds like a cat purring to me. I am starting out on euro rack when my Arthurian boxes arrive . I WILL be getting this filter based on your demo. Doe-fer quad ADSR any comments
I have the Waldorf NW1 as an oscillator waiting for installation
Sounds like some of the sound effects from NES game Zelda 2, love it!
I come from the future. this VCF still kicks ass!
I have a question, do you remember which VCO did you use for this demo?
great video to just be able to hear simple sweeps, what watch are you wearing? I love it...
Best WASP Demo Video, i've got it too but you get other sound dimensions out of it :D
What exactly you do with the Maths to get these sounds?
Hi Great video dude! Just wondering if the original knobs are easy to remove, any tips? Thanks.
You just sold me this one
Doepfer builds modules like BMW builds cars: solid, quality are two adjectives that come to mind. Great video.
Reminds me of shortwave interference, really cool
It reminds me a bit of the filter section of the MicroBrute. Together with the Brute factor, it can actually do some brutal stuff.
Yeah it’s definitely similar, although they are different, they both warble
Damn that’s gnarly. Sold.
damn so delicious!
Have you tried the little soldering hack that allows this module to self-oscillate at max res?
No, might be worth a try though, heard good things - have you?
Really enjoyed this video, funny one :D
Ive been thinkin about selling my wasp filter...now i dont.
Excellent
Thank you
great videos man. strictly speaking (and why should we not be strict...), exactly between the LP and HP, it's a notch filter. either side of centre, either the HP or LP is more heavily weighted.
Good point there! Cheers

Nice one! Those are Davies 1900 clones, you can get them from Small Bear in the US or Thonk in the UK
Thanks for the review, no squencer bullshit as always in the reviews, just showing the sounds. what oscilator you used?
Ta. The little 6HP Analogue Solutions VCO.
Dope - fer
Yeah with the lfo there's some straight rdrz stuff, best dubstep artist check him out, dope indeed thank you for demonstrating this
Hi, I have a wasp filter and seem to recall getting those weird sounds out of it , now I have transferred it to a Arturia Rack Brute 6, I seem to get it to do it, am I missing something?

where do you get those sweet looking knobs on the WASP and Korgasmatron?
They’re Davies clone knobs, you should be able to get similar from Thonk! Just check the shaft type you need carefully
5:26 Heart beat!!
where can i get those replacement knobs? The originial knobs from the doepfer modules are quite uncomfartable!
Hey I know it's been a few years but these are showing up on the resale market broken; any tips on what to look for when picking up non working modules?
Check with Doepfer I’d say?
On some settings some almost like 4 operator FM:)
What are those replace knobs ??
Davies clones from Small Bear Electronics, also available from Thonk.co.uk!
Dope Fur
I like the gritty sound of the filter, and it seems sorta quirky.
Chaos filter!
I remember playing a WASP in the early 80s with the touch keyboard. Wish I bought it but I was a greasy teenager with no money. Grat noise though
If ur still interested you maybe could take a closer look at the jasper synth! Some assembled are offered to buy at ebay!
Sometimes Sounds like a Microkorg, wasp sounds like micro when turn up the microkorg filter with its distortion mode sounds... Or I wrong?
i find the high pass more freaky :))
You're easily entertained......like me LOL....I have one too!
I heard it's worth sticking BP into the CV input...
I am scared to do this and blow the chip again. Can you verify that it is safe?
@Alastair Jackson youre the man thanks ill try when i get home!
What kind of knobs are you using there?
Davies 1900H
1:13 LOL
+Wot Mate
DDUUUUDDDDEEEEE...................(8^)
+Wot Mate
2:37 ,, whololololo
Is your case made out of CARDBOARD?
+Wot Mate Ha. Yes: ua-cam.com/video/mf0Z34LJ8Y8/v-deo.html
I see a module with an AK-47 on the left. What is that?
Harvestman Piston Honda!
It reminds me of a monster and a frog, not necesarilly a wasp but I like it
Yeah, it really is a keeper isn't it. This is one of the exceptions to the general rule, however. There's a reason most great filters cost 3 times as much as standard Doepfer stuff. Thanks - those are Davies clones from Small Bear Electronics in the states!
If you're based in the UK, you can get a variety of colours of Davies clone knobs from Thonk.
True dat

💛🖤
I'm afraid you've to buy a third one, now Doepfer has gone wild with producing a black with yellow knobs Sonder Edition ;-)
Yes! I was just thinking about their black n yellow one.
👍
2m52s with CC on :D
WANT!
Filter closing with resonance seems unique. Opening, not as much.
How do you mean opening?
please enable subtitles and go to 6:40 ... yeah :p
mine is very noisy :(
1:13 till 1:25 is my favorite part... learn to patch better? who does? :p
Sounds more like an ms 20 , salle key filter
lol, what do you mean you got an extra input for free??
If only it had vc res
IT'S SO WEIRD
If you think this is weird, check out the Polivoks VCF. It's an even more unstable version of the Wasp Filter!
Half of these comments are about the Davies clone knobs.
I love the part when it becomes a bass drum.
more like dopefer
Pretty cool! I overlook Doepfer most of the time, but you are right that this is not right. Every module is special!
