- Lorsque le sculpteur Auguste Rodin a vu les danseuses et danseurs du Ballet royal du Cambodge se produire en France en 1906, il a été subjugué par leur perfection. La danse classique khmère est l'une des plus anciennes traditions chorégraphiques du monde. Même si le vocabulaire formel des gestes n'est pas aisé à comprendre, la beauté méditative de l'extraordinaire technique des danseuses et danseurs, ainsi que l'effet hypnotique de leur intense concentration, restent tout à fait captivants.
Dans les années 70, la danse traditionnelle khmère a subi un préjudice important et cet art a failli disparaître. Cependant, grâce au courage et à la détermination de quelques professeur.e.s, danseuses et danseurs, le Royal Ballet a pu renaître. Proeung Chhieng et la princesse Buppha Devi ont joué un rôle essentiel dans cette renaissance, et participent au film d'Adrian Maben qui accompagne la compagnie en tournée en Europe.
Ce documentaire restitue le spectacle scintillant des représentations et explique les histoires qui sont racontées. Il dévoile également les préparatifs minutieux qui précèdent les apparitions sur scène, et accompagne les jeunes Cambodgien.ne.s dans leur découverte de l'Occident.
