    One , particular individual who would be almost overwhelmed by this music is none other than Herr Telemann himself. More than enthusiastic itself about French music, it requires only a little imagination to envisage his delight on hearing this composition and other accompanying works.

    I'm in awe of this richly satisfying music, PROPER music, performed by proper musicians and not the "popular" jangling rebellious discordant noise made by over-paid egotists, unable to exist without constant adulation from adoring fanatics.
    My utmost respect for the musicians for their skill, commitment time-wise and enthusiasm. Respect also for the managers, agents, props boys, wardrobe keepers, fixer-uppers, sparkies, recording engineers and sponsors - the largely unseen and unsung crew behind the scenes. To use a word that has been assaulted into loss of its real meaning - amazing!

    « LE CONCERT ROYAL DE LA NUIT - ENSEMBLE CORRESPONDANCES - SÉBASTIEN DAUCÉ - EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL «
    Quelle spectacle, une merveille, voix vocales et instrumentales exceptionnelles bravo. C’est par hasard, en recherchant des airs pour une des chanteuses de l’ensemble CORRESPONDANCES que SÉBASTIEN DAUCÉ découvre LE RÉCIT DE LA NUIT. Un air d’une délicatesse où le temps est comme suspendu. Après cette trouvaille, le musicien va patiemment et pendant trois ans, reconstituer le ballet dont est issu ce récit. SÉBASTIEN DAUCÉ et l’ensemble CORRESPONDANCES, que l’on avait souvent entendus dans des œuvres plus austère, comme LES LEÇONS DES TÉNÈBRES de MICHEL-RICHARD DELALANDE {1657~1726}, ou des Motets de ETIENNE MOULINIÉ {1599~1676} et MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER {1643~1704}, montrent que les fastes de la cour ne leur font pas peur. La sonorité de l’orchestre raffinée, chaude et boisée, le grand art déclamatoire des chanteurs, les belles couleurs des Voix, la direction précise et nuancée, tout Concours à rendre à cette reconstitution son éclat et son charme d’origine. Les scènes qui se succèdent tour à tour sombres, cocasses, effrayantes, tragiques, ou mélancoliques pour finalement aboutir au triomphe de la lumière bravo à tous. LE BALLET ROYAL DE LA NUIT était une commande de JULES MAZARIN {1602~1661}, encore en charge du Royaume en raison du jeune âge du Roi. C’est une œuvre collective et grandiose, composée notamment par ANTOINE BOËSSET {1587~1643}, MICHEL LAMBERT {1610~1696} et JEAN-BAPTISTE LULLY {1632~1687}, sur un livret D’ISAAC DE BENSERADE {1612~1691}. SÉBASTIEN DAUCÉ y a ajouté des extraits de l’ERCOLE AMANTE de FRANCESCO CAVALLI {1602~1676} et de L’ORFEO de LUIGI ROSSI {1597~1653}. Lors de sa création, le ballet fut donné au cours de sept veillées et mit à contribution les talents de danseurs d’un Roi âgé de 15 ans, de son frère, de nombreux nobles, de danseurs, de comédiens italiens, de décors et de costumes somptueux. Ce fut un immense succès aussi bien auprès de la cour que du public populaire qui pût y assister. Mais c’était aussi une habile manœuvre politique, et en quelque sorte un spectacle fondateur. En effet, après une nuit peuplée de créatures fantastiques, monstres, fantômes et âmes errantes, de différents tableaux qui montrent aussi bien la cour des miracles, les enfer ou l’Olympe, le soleil apparaît à l’aurore sous les traits du jeune ROI LOUIS XIV {1638~1715} ! La fameuse image du ROI SOLEIL commence à prendre forme, celle d’un monarque absolu, mais aussi grand mécène, lui-même musicien et danseur, qui sût utiliser son goût pour les arts pour affirmer son prestige. Merci pour ce concert magnifique, et ce moment de musique Baroque et ses chefs-d’œuvre musical du XVIIe siècle grandiose, et l’ensemble CORRESPONDANCES dirigé par SÉBASTIEN DAUCÉ exceptionnel, au EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL de UTRECHT, Festival de musique ancienne le 28 août 2018, que j’ai énormément aimé bravo.

    I feel a bit delirious while listening to this. If it's not too bold or remiss to say... Lully was not merely the incidental composer of an incidental king. If "The Sun King" is an archetypical personality of the "artist-as-ruler" or "artist-king"... then Lully was the archetypical personality of "His Prophet," his interpreter. EDIT: With novice enthusiasm, I assumed Lully had a major hand in this piece... but it seems this was more a collaborative effort between several composers.

      @jean-marcliautaud6306 5 років тому +8

      I appreciate you liked this huge piece of music but Lully had nothing to do with this. "Le concert royal de la nuit" was performed in 1653 and Lully's first opera, "Cadmus & Hermione" in 1673, exactly 20 years later. When "Le concert" was created, Louis XIV and Lully were both very young. In a way, you can say that Lully was a heir of the style of music "Le concert" represents. Sébastien Daucé has found a book containing the melody of some of the pieces that were performed on that occasion (they were rumored lost) and he harmonized them the way they were supposed to sound like at that time. Then he added some musical pieces that were performed for the marriage of Louis XIV (all the pieces in italian, extracts from Cavalli's "Ercole amante"). And the result is there. Stunning "mid seventienth century music" rediscovered.

    The violins are held in an unusual way, beneath the collarbone. Is this the way vioins were held in the mid 17th century ? Usually they are held higher between the collarbone and the jawbone.

      According to Shunske Sato (violinist at the Netherlands Bach Society around 1:00) this was the way they held violins back in the day. He describes it here: ua-cam.com/video/i8UNFbGzFMM/v-deo.html&vl=en

    For some reason, the first movement, which I guess functions as an overture, is sometimes attributed to Lully. Is it actually composed by de Cambefort?

    • @clercflorian4637
      @clercflorian4637 6 років тому +5

      As I know, Lully didn't contribute to the composition of this ballet, maybe for "Entrée des Égyptiens" (egyptian's / bohemian entrance, played with the Harpsichord 20:49 ) but it's not sure.
      [sorry if my english isn't understandable, I didn't practice since one year ago ^^""""]

      François de Chancy, Monsieur de Vertpré, Mollier [not Molière], Michel Mazuel, Jean de Cambefort and maybe other compositors write/compose the Ballet

    • @benmaloney5434
      @benmaloney5434 5 років тому

      Some of the vocal 'airs' are by Cambefort (amongst others) but sadly, all of the instrumental music from the manuscript of 'Ballet de la Nuit' is anonymous. Unfortunately it is also copied in incomplete form, so here, Sebastien Daucé reconstructed the middle parts, and sometimes the bass as well. At 20 years old, Lully was involved in the original production and danced alongside the King (which is supposedly how he got his big break).

    I think that a lot of people would welcome if Avrotros would give time of beginning of every title. For me it is almost impossible to distinguish what we are listening to. Also I am quite surprised that Jean Baptiste is not mentioned in the programme, a lot of numbers sound very similar to his style - for example the first one is extremely close to the piece I know as a part of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme - Le Marche de Turcs ( or similar name 🙋🙂 )…..don ´t you think also….? 🌞

      Much like Dauce, I'm transfixed the the opening recit. I cannot imagine any other soloist singing the way she does; it's as if she had the sort of voice in mind when the composer wrote it.

      Bart, thank you for the full list of singers. The vocal ensemble is very good. They all seem to be trained professionals. Although I am not a native Italian speaker, I though they did quite well with the pronunciation of Italian. Is the vocal ensemble part of Ensemble Correspondances?

    French and Italian Opera or plays of this period had standard gestures and poses. It would be good if the singers could use these.
