Link "suspends his intelligence" for the show. That's why he always loses. In the one episode where he try-harded and got everything right, damnyell and richard came on in Good mythical more and said, "When Link loses it gives the views an underdog but if link comes in with all the correct answers and doesn't even try it breaks the illusion."
I'm guessing Link is way smarter than he lets on and he normally looks like he knows the right answer.
