David, The Mozart concerto number 20 with Serkin and Szell with Columbia is one of my favorite recordings ever. I played it on repeat on my honeymoon 29 years ago. Not that you needed to know that. Thanks for the box recommendation!
One of my favorite musical moments ever is during the finale of Concerto no 17; the variation with the falling scale in the woodwinds following the minor key variation.
Could not agree more. I have these in other releases (not the Japanese box), and listen to them all the time. Back on LP I had 19 & 20 with Szell, and good Gawd I played that a lot!
His early non-Sony, pre-DG/Abbado recordings are also well worth a listen. No. 14 with the Busch Chamber Players and no. 16 with Mitropoulos were available on UA-cam last time I looked.
Goodness gracious, Rudolf Serkin - The Complete Columbia Album Collection is running $1599.99 on Amazon. This is through a company called Rare Music Resource. I think I'll pass, but there are other options. Thanks for the Fave, Dave!

I'm used to Gilels/Böhm's Mozart 27 but listening to Serkin just now was very refreshing. Great recommendation Dave!

I'd like to add my two cents and say Serkin's live recording of the Mozart #22 with the Perpignan Festival orchestra is extraordinary.
My favourite pianists on Mozart piano concertos are Serkin, Badura Skoda, Annie Fischer and Anda
Love Gerald Anda! Maybe my favorite in the concerti.

Mr Hurwitz, any thoughts between Rudolf and Peter Serkin in this repertoire?
None whatsoever. Everyone should just listen and draw their own conclusions.
