A straight up transcendent instrument. Crosses all genre boundaries.
Absolutely timeless too. Finally got to play with one recently, and it was able to replicate sounds from every era, from 70s prog to 80s new wave to modern EDM and dubstep.
When an instrument can still sound new and interesting 50 years later, you know it’s something special.
I still have my Minimoog Model D that I purchased in 1979.
Doug David Cool! It was around 78/79 I got my first Minimoog brandnew from Coast Music in Costa Mesa, CA. for $1900.00. I got my second one used from a friend in the mid 80's for $400.00. Ended up selling both in 88 for $150.00 each., and it took a month of ads in the local recycler to finally get someone to take em off my hands lol. Ended up with a Minimoog Voyager years latter, and like you will probably never get rid of your D, I'll be hanging on to my Voyager till my demise.
I just bought the reissue, I didn't know I could love a synth like I love my model D !
Niklas Gindler I remember the feeling .. 1978 after having saved half mowing lawns all summer, my mom drove me down to Coast Music and chipped in the other half and we came home with a brand new shiny Minimoog Model D. I learned all the ELP and Yes Minimoog solos, and a couple things by Chic Corea and I was on top of the world with my whole music carrer in front of me. Man was I thrilled with my Minimoog, it sat on top of my Rhodes 73 Stage and next to my Hammond B3 for 10 years. Little did I realize thst day I came home with it 10 years latter I'd be selling it off for a hundred and fifty bucks to help pay for some digital synths lol, took quite a while to find someone to buy it as well (and I was in Los Angeles to boot!) Nobody wanted the poor Minimoogs anymore. My how things have turned around after all these years. I bought a custom tiger oak Minimoog Voyager last year and am just as happy with the tone as I was with my Model D, I just couldn't justify paying $3500.00 for the same Model D I sold years earlier for $150.00! But for you guys who have never owned a D back in the day I'm sure its money well spent for you! Its a mighty fine synthesizer! Don't sell it! Ever! 👍🎹
Awesome story ! I wonder if that lucky SOB who bought yours still has it, deal of the decade.. I just had to have it, so ya know you make it happen.. 😎
Niklas Gindler Ohhhhh ya I know the feeling. I was that way with my Voyager last year .. after Moogs annoucment that they were discontinuing the Voyager, and re-releasing the D, I just HAD to have a brand new Voyager with pretty blue backlit panel before they were gone into oblivion. I found the limited run Tiger Oak one I ended up getting, but had to go through some pretty rough hoops to come up with the funds. Are you going to be gigging with your D? If so I highly recommend getting a flight case for it. The wood on my D started getting pretty dinged up moving it from gig to gig in only a blanket. I actually bought a second D in 1982 used from a friend with an Anvil flight case, I still have that flight case (though the foam has disintergrated) and it made life ALOT easier on the road (it has wheels) Ok now you need a Hammond B3 and Leslie 900 😁
What was old is new again. The most recent artist to use the Minimoog Model D is Disclosure on their EP "Moog for Love". Love the deep bass sound it produces which I think is missing in most digital applications. Nothing wrong with digital but analog has more soul and the Minimoog MD certainly has it.
The story of minimoog and Keith Emerson? He was a pioneer of this instrument!
well most of his work was on his modular system, the minimoog was just an extra
@@mattekudasai8249 Reggae superstar musician Bob Marley incorporated the Minimoog into his music in the early 1970's with his band the Wailers when they played the song called Stir It Up.
6:25 he was about to say Bob Buchla but stopped himself haha
Top work, this. Very, very excited to see these land in the warehouse.
Great video! This is my heart!!!! Minimoog forever! I've wanted one since I was a little kid! Hopefully now I will get one!!
This doco is brilliant. I'm so lucky to have grown up through all these musical eras :)
Such a beautiful documentary! Thank you!
This is so great. Love this!
Excellent series shaping up here, the history is fascinating guys.
Every six years. Can't wait. Better click the 'Bell' icon to receive notifications
Still my dream to have one some day... there is nothing comparable to the Model D!
Well, now you can!
monark for reaktor is for all intents and purposes identical
Adam Borseti Sorta🤔 My original D's had no midi, had no giant wall wart, its oscillators were a pain in the arse to keep tuned, and you had to tear the bottom of em off regularly and clean the gold contact rods with alcohol to keep the things from making high pitch squeeling sounds at in opourtune times lol, all things that the new D's don't have 😁
just get one at wallmart
Just get a Poly D ;)
This was so good!
More, please, more. Make part 3 like 2 hours long please!
I take it you like MOOG synths lol
@@NathanChisholm041 MOOG is one of a kind
There's a good documentary available:

Much value and information in this video. Thanks
no Ads! Thank you!
Wow, Midge Ure's Minimoog looked highly customized (freeze frame @2:06) !
Oh my god that xenon! I'd kill to have that machine, ciani's sounds are divine!
amazing, thank you for this historical overview! FR
Love this. Using this a lot in my current sound!
We’re just going to ignore The Beatles pioneering use of the Moog or Wings use of the Minimoog in the mid-70’s?
Yes
That's a pretty awesome list.
I wonder if Elvis Presley were alive in late 70's throughout the 80's and into the 90's, would he have used the Moog Synthesizers in the recording studio recording albums and in concert?
J.S.Bach surely would have used one.
love it!!
Well I sure love the Model D app I just downloaded. Thanks Moog for making it free.
Well done!
Insightful!
Way too cool
Woa! ends with Junior Boys haha siiick
Larry Dunn helped mold Earth Wind And Fire's sound because of it! Their latest album Larry's is running wild on it! Thank goodness for the mimi moog
The Minimoog.
A lot of complicated controls.
Yamaha, Casio & other modern synthesizers, perfect for beginners & rookies.
Not super complicated tbh
6:43 That sound is so dark and powerful
Eh... kinda... she's got the right idea. Would sound better with someone that isn't tone deaf with a flat airy voice.
@@Veneer22 You could not be more wrong about Beth Gibbons, she's an incredible singer. She did an incredible operatic album with the Polish Symphony Orchestra last year
Don't mess with Perfection!
Love the can of TAB at 1:40.
Party Game: Everyone, without looking, draw a can of TAB. May be more fun with shroom-vape
great !
Ah memories..:)
I used Moog in my youth. now that I am older, I use AARP.
Hell! With my Social Security Disability Insurance I can't even afford an AARP!
@@undergroundwarrior70 wat a arp
Why not use both 🤷♂️
devo...uno de los grandes new wave....con suclasico techno...y sus clasicossentitizadores de esa epoca...epoca de oro para los dj de la vieja escuela....
Nice history.
would be much more interesting if it dug into the engineering details vs just a rehash of who used it.
nice!🤩
The Model D is out of my price range but the Moog mother 32 is within my grasp.
Behringer!!
Picked up my first one for for $65 at a pawn shop
Lucky bastard ;-)
Damn, wish i was you ;-;
The future of Minimoog: Minimoog Voyager XL Reissue in 2021
that last demo by portishead makes a great use of that ringmod lead
Now I’m wondering what modification did Ultravox have in their Mini at 2:06
Preset memory?
Anyone know the song starting around 5:04? Loving it
I was gonna be pissed if they didn't mention Bernie Worrell!🤘🤘
Lot more of him in this one ua-cam.com/video/XRg8R-00mjs/v-deo.html Love that dude
How about kashif?
Just think...that moog led to everything. From moog to the wavestate..what a voyage.
Can someone please help? what are those mods at 2:05 ????
i have never seen them before... not even on Synthfool Kevin Lightner's (RIP) pages...
Can't wait for the Mod D reissue to hit the sales floors. Hopefully won't be too much longer.
Is that the Minimoog Model D @6:27 that Adrian Utley is showing off? Been in love with the sound these things make for 40 years, that little instrument he just took the dustcovers off looks gorgeous. I cannot play a note to save my life, but I so want one!
@Moog Music Inc please put up a tracklist for these videos. The artists' music used in here should be referenced. Thank you in advance.
What is the name of the song playing for The Belleville Three part?
what is the song at 5:20 ?
Sigh. And now they're for sale again. Looks like I'm selling my car to get a model D.
Now if only I could afford one.
Why no mention of Keith Emerson Moog? It was that Lucky Man solo that sold me my first Minimoog in the 70's, and I tore the music stand off my folks Steinway M and stacked it on top just like Keith did his Minimoog (to my parents horror lol) If someone mentions Minimoog to me today I think of these four in this order Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Jan Hammer, and Chic Corea. Still this is an interesting mini documentary, just dissapointed like others you left the Keithster out ☹️
and don't forget Led Zep's "Synth I've Been Loving You", or Kelly's "Synth You've Been Gone", or Skyliners' "Synth I Don't Have You"
Any one remember all those old compilation albums of classical and country tunes done with moogs , used to by them from the thrift shop for 50 cents lol
Can anyone tell me the name of the artist and song at 5:21 (Detroit Techno)? Thanks!
Also wondered that!
I couldn't find it on shazam. Any luck?
Also wondering
Still no one who knows?
@@SourceDistributionTV Bob Marley a famous reggae artist from Jamaica Incorporated the Minimoog into his music when he went to the U.K. with his band called the Wailers in the early 1970's.
They forgot HOME the author of RESONANCE, one of the best synth tunes ever
Actually i rhink,RESONANCE was made with a Moog Grandmother
I think PART III is entirely devoted to that track. No point in a tiny shout out to a song that monumental during a 7 minute video
I was sent here because I was checking out videos on the Moog Prodigy.. (the synth I know mostly because of the band) now I want to know the difference and the similarities and the time-line... (in relation to the minimoog) I'll wait..
I think in that interview Trent Reznor said it was a voyager not a model D.
💜💜💜
Where is Sun Ra? He was touring with two minimoogs. One for the right hand, and one for the left. Circa 1970.
Why parts 2 always have less views?
3:45 little did he know 40 years later the MiniMoog is still the go to / reference mono synth for the same reasons..
05:18 track id please!
KEITH EMERSON?????????
What’s the closing track called?!
what should i get a model D or sub 37 for house music?
Andres gualtero I would get the model D, unlike the 37 the parts for the Model D had to be special ordered/reissued since they were no longer produced. The transistor used for example was specially produced on order for Moog music. So these new Model D's might end up out of production in the future and the you would be out of luck.
and they didn't mention Daryl Dragon! (Captain & Tennille) THE MUSKRAT SOUND! groundbreaking!
Whats the bess thing us emalates the mini mog?
Nice videos but I wish he would've talked a little about Giorgio Moroder. You can directly trace modern day EDM right back to him.
I feel the love is his best!
Wowwww, what are the mods on the Model D at 2:06!?
Most likely early midi
It amazes me how you guys didn't even mentioned Wendy Carlos, she was a huge part to the development of the synths and she even recorded one of the very first full synth music albums even writing the most popular soundtracks for films
this is about the minimoog, not moog as a whole. it's all in the title lol
He said DETROIT was the home of house ??!?!? Techno yes but House as it were was born in CHICAGO. Smh
I thought the same thing
Not much mentioned about Emerson, Harrison and just a glance at Wakeman....
Emerson played the "Maxi-Moog".
This brief is about the Minimoog portable synthesizer, and not about others Moog's synthesizers. Keith Emerson played the Moog 55 Modular Synthesizer and never played the Minimoog, and not only in studio, but even in live performances. I think we should read the video title more carefully.
whats the track playing at the end?
Junior Boys - Big Black Coat
I didn't realize it was that big.
There you have it guys.. if you have a minimoog model d... you'll have money for eyes and fame beyond what you can imagine..
What is the last song
No mention of Keith Emerson? Did someone forget?
What about Roger Troutman? He used a miniMOOG in 1986 with his Talkbox.
was a DX100
So is the model D better than the oddyssey or prophet 5? No idea what the difference is...
Just curious, why 5 years gap between the upload of part 1 and part 2?
what's song at 3.30
What’s the song at the very end
Junior Boys - Big Black Coat.
"Thriller" the album that used the moog as a base more than any other album in history ... umm "Switched on Bach"? "Six Wives of Henry the VIII"?
I always got the impression that Switched on Bach was the album that really brought the moog to prominence
"Switched on Bach" was played at Moog 55 Modular Synthesizer, no at Minimoog.
I just watched Part 1 released on YouTune 2011... I was wondering what happened to the narrators hair from part 1-2. 5 years and his 40's. This was released in 2016
Isaac Smith do u know the song at 3.30
what about Johnny Guitar Watson?
It's an analog synthesizer that through generations has been a perennial subversive
Why didn't you talk more about Wakeman, Emerson and other Prog Bands? I own a Micro Moog
See Part I of this video series
This brief is about the Minimoog portable synthesizer, and not about others Moog's synthesizers. Keith Emerson played the Moog 55 Modular Synthesizer and never played the Minimoog, and not only in studio, but even in live performances. I think we should read the video title more carefully.
Where's Stevie Wonder?????
Where are the jaivas? they also used the minimoog for many of their albums
Episode IV is entirely devoted to the music of the Jaivas. MOOG didn't want to do just a tiny shout out next to these other artists no one has heard of in a tiny 7 minute video
impressive for sure.... also the price tag! :P
In practically all the LP´s and Tours of the ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), the main synthesizer sound is the minimoog D. Here it can be seen: ua-cam.com/video/62luSpy8tN4/v-deo.html
anyone know the song at 5:19
Only 2 parts, what....
