    another quick way to do splatter effects is to dip an old toothbrush in your paint then run a finger over the bristles. This gives a really good splatter for blood, mud or even rust

    For rust, try covering the piece with wood glue and pack it into very fine sawdust and let dry. Then dust off the excess sawdust and color with alcohol based wood dye, like yellow, orange or mahogny. You can later spray it with matte clear coat. I make rust this way. You get a good texture that way too. You can also use more rough sawdust and play with making layers upon layers to get that flake feel. I find it best to glue on layers of paper under to get the flakes. Try it. Fools everyone. You can not see the difference between the real thing and the props.

    A fun one I've used quite a bit is a mix of cayenne pepper and cinnamon, dabbed on a spot of glue for a rusty look. For a brass or copper look, I've used white acrylic paint with just a small dab of a light green ditto, maybe a hint of blue or cyan, and just a little bit of sand or salt for texture. It blobs up really nicely and kind of gives in an underwater look.

      Was the brass or copper part after it was already painted to look like the metal, or is this how you got the look of it all together? I have painted the guards and butt caps of rubber knives to look like bronze, and then I dry brushed on green.

    I buy cheap "beauty blenders" to apply weathering to things. You can smear it and dab it into corners without catching edges or creating harsh lines as all the surfaces are round, it is also a good size to hold easily and depending where you buy it they are a $/£ each... Quite good for something so versatile

    • @greencupcakes1

      Good makeup brushes can be quite pricey but the bristles tend to be more dense and less prone to falling out could be worth a try

    I have a tip from my decades of mural painting...when you want to do spatter painting, try the tile and grout brush by Libman. Dip it and pull your finger over the bristles. It's like it was made for spatter painting.

    So I am re-watching this because I am working on painting some rubber daggers to look like they have a Damascus pattern on the blades, and bronze guards and butt caps, but the idea is that these daggers used to belong to someone else and they were a status symbol, but now are in the possession of a rogue that really doesn't care what happens to them since they can just kill someone and get new ones or steal more. So the idea is that they are now incredibly dirty, the bronze is starting to corrode, the blade is showing signs of rusting and they just are all beat up. So I am trying to find a good way to make them look like they have some rust spots on them.
    I will say that painting the Damascus pattern has been quite hard, I just can't seem to come up with a look I am satisfied with.
    For context on the setting for the costume. My sister brother-in-law and I are going to cosplay at the Renaissance Faire in Snohomish I believe it is this August, and my sister is going as her DnD character which is a Tabaxy (have no clue how it's spelled) rogue, my brother-in-law is going as an Elven pirate inspired by Edward Kenway from AC4 Black Flag, and I am going as a sort of Dwarven king, so the daggers are for my sister.

    How has the finish of the axe held up over time? And how would the rusting method of the axe work on base coat of neoprene? Is there a recommended way of sealing the axe style of rusting?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  2 роки тому

      The axe still looks great! We sealed the rust with a spray can of varnish, which does darken the finish a little bit. The rust techniques should work the same with your base coat of neoprene.

    Hi Bill and Brit, I hear that airbrush compressors without the storage tank "pulse" as the paint comes out of the airbrush. Is this an issue that will negatively affect the results? I'm not looking to do fine detailed work but as a way for even coverage of props and armour while minimising brush strokes (and potentially saving on buying spray cans all the time). Plus I like new toys ;)
