I just started watching your videos, I've dived head first into way too much money spent on broken consoles including SNES, PS1, PS2, and NES. Your videos have been very educational and hopefully I will be successful in repairing these consoles and at least breaking even on my budget 😅. I will be watching many more and using these as my reference videos!
You could simply get a memory card with FMCB (Free MCBoot) and a network adapter to load games from hard disk. While all my fat PS2s have still-working disc drives, that's how I use mine as well. For the slim, which can not use a hard disk, you can get an SD card adapter that uses one of the memory card slots. Loading from USB is possible as well, but too slow.
I’m migrating from HDD to network loading for my PS2 games, since I am already setting up a RetroNAS server for my MiSTer and some other consoles/computers.
modbo4 is pretty cool. you can boot backup ps1/ps2 games, or boot from memcard. It doest kill the laser, bad media can tough. if its an 5k model, check on the laser coil resistance. if its below 5 ohm, it fried the LA laser driver Ic on the board. replace laser, and driver Ic. perform romeo mod to prevent it from self toasting again. I think 5k ps2 is the best of all, but needs a little knowledge to use it with modchip safely.
It's funny, I had one of those in the pile as well but it was the only fully working one so it didn't make it into the video. Which I guess isn't a surprise as they're the supposed to be the most reliable. I only pulled them all out because a friend asked if I had any PS2s, so they got the only good one
If you have a phat ps2 that won't turn on and you can't see anything blown, there's three orange diodes in a group. They should only have continuity in one direction . if they have it in both, then that's the issue
I really loved helping develop the PS2 @ Sony. I heard that startup sound so many times at work I grew to loath it.
What part of the development were you working on? Thats awesome dude! 🤟
Lots of pets for Hank !

Awww Hank is expert helper.
The last version of the slim was impressive given the power supply was squeezed inside as well.

cat knows what to do 😳
Hahah Hank, I've got a Burmese, can't do anything without her wanting to be next to me
Hank loves hanging out in that room, and after I moved the lab in there he gets upset if when close the door to film and he's not in there
@@TheRetroChannel hahaha my cat is vocal as hell. Happy new year bud, fire up the bbq and have a few drinks. Thanks for your content this year!
🍻🍻
Cute Hank :)

Good to know. I've got a few things to check on that slim PS2, just haven't gotten around to it yet
KITTY!
15:05 My guess is a video RAM rather than CPU itself.
Could be. I haven't completely written off this board so it'll be back in the next part
Crack a phatty 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The mechanism uses separate lasers for CD versus DVD, so it's not unusual for a drive to handle a CD when it can't read a DVD.
He knows that. He even said as much.
@@PJBonoVox he did? I was listening for it, and missed it. Might have posted too soon.
had no idea. that’s an odd design.
@@eightsprites I might have completely misremembered this. Don't believe people on the Internet... ;)
Я бы не стал восстанавливать лазеры, а мод чип удалил бы, так как он мешает запуску MCBoot. Воткнул бы HDD в толстушки и залил игрушек на него 😂
