"Imprisoned for his lifestyle choices."
More like persecuted for his homosexuality.
Lachlan Bennett Exactly, kinda surprised they swept something like that under the rug in a video about Wilde
It was called sodomy then.
The play is so good, and i think it is first a play on the English language. Its horrific that he was imprisoned, and he was never the same again.
yeah, I was really taken aback by that, I don't think being gay is a 'lifestyle choice'.
oh whatever
I remember doing this play my freshman year in high school. We had people rolling in the aisles with laughter.
The 1952 version is my favorite. That Lady Bracknell cannot be topped
Agreed.
Judi Dench flops spectacularly in that role.
Wait a second...
If Jack is Algernon's big brother,
And Gwendolyn is Algy's cousin,
Then Gwendolyn is also Jack's cousin.
*_S W E E T H O M E A L A B A M A_*
that's Wilde for ya
That’s society for ya!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS, im doing this at A-Level atm
What? No cucumber sandwiches?
Not even for ready money...
Why didn't they just say he was put in jail for being gay. What's with this "lifestyle choices." They made it sound like he did something wrong.
Walter Wilson He cheated on his wife. That’s what they mean by lifestyle choices.
MysteryGirl 11 that isn’t a crime, and that’s not what they mean
Nice video. I actually enjoy Oscar Wilde and am hugely embarrassed I haven't read, or seen anything of 'The Importance of Being Earnest" before. Thank you.
I will now.
Same here.
I just did the importance of being earnest, I was doctor chausable. Everyone laughed at me while doing it.
I would hope most people who come to this "Top 10 Notes" will just go ahead and read the play and, maybe, even bother to find out more about the life of Oscar Wilde.
This movie was one of my favorites.
Though this and videos may not get much fanfare I do hope you continue putting them up from time to time.
Yep, we plan on doing 1-2 clips per week (but not more) as we do 2 new clips per day. Even when we go to 3 clips per day, then these will be the occasional third clip of the day. We like variety, and it's a good service to students and book aficionados.
Gwendoline is Algae's cousin, Jack later becomes Ernest, and Algae' brother, therefore Gwendoline is Ernest's cousin. But Jack in the country.

I d. Like to read the Play.
Read this recently, still amusing and an entertaining read.
I have to act as Algernon is this play soon, so this was great!
And I MUST be Cecily!
Why say "lifestyle choices"? Its not a choice and its not a lifestyle. Its an orientation people are born with. And what's wrong with saying "Because he was gay"?
+Leona Schneider there is, however, something wrong with being with children.
There once was in English the original carefree meaning of the word 'gay' from the French language that somehow mostly became a sublimation to indicate homosexuality.
First Mojo notes video I've seen. It's great!
Even in passing , the witticism of the title should have been mentioned. Many students in English lit did not grasp the importance of the double meaning of the title.
1 : Earnest : Resulting from or showing sincere and intense conviction.
2: Ernest : The name.
This play doesn't translate well to other languages. For example in spanish it is called "La importancia de llamarse Ernesto" (The importance of being named Ernesto). It looses a lot in the plot. I got the full impact of the play when I read it in English.
As far as Wilde, the description of "Lifestyle" is correct. for not only was he gay but flaunted it with flamboyant aplomb. Way ahead of the swinging 60s His witticisms were biting , incisive and required a brain. "I think that GOD in creating man somewhat overestimated his abilities" BRILLIANT!
I wonder if anyone remembers the play Peter Parker failed to see in Spider-Man 2 movie. ;)
"Imprisonned for his lifestill choices" wtf, 1 he didn t choose to be a homosexuel, and 2 he was imprisonned because he was a homosexual, not because of bad behavior...
kukicu being gay hasn’t always been tolerated...it was called sodomy back then and it was a crime legally
@@sammasek2627 and rightfully so
@@viperngruen I'll just leave this comment here so that in the future I may be notified to see a flame war unfold. For now, it will remain as a mere reminder.
@@inanjarif1388 unfortunately the flame war never came to be
I love Oscar Wilde's work,
Have you ever done a Top 10 Notes for Jayne Eyre?

Lost me at the bizarre euphemism "lifestyle choices."
The movie was GREAT! I loved it
well I will do well to look for this book and play shouldn't I ?
most enjoyable play to read
By the way, love the pick for a Top Ten.
When you were talking about the plays adaptations, you missed the 1992 version of it, which coincidentally was an all black interpretation of the play. Just thought you might want to include all adaptations next time
byarkie thanks didn’t know this have to look it up
Choices? Hmm... I know it wasn't on purpose, but watch your words please. Pretty sure that wasn't a choice for him, though. Love you WatchMojo!
Thanks for this can you do more.
I was in this play, it's amazing!
Gotcha! The description says: "Oliver Wilde's". Should be Oscar ;-)
Watchmojo should also make Top 10 Notes for movies and television.
Do you mean like recaps of shows? We actually have a bunch of those... clips that recap a show's main storyline, the main characters etc. For example:
Mad Men: Everything to know
Or do you mean something else?
My Intro to Lit class just covered this play and one of the first things my teacher pointed out was that Algernon was the closest to a self-insert for Oscar Wilde…
Take with that what you will!!🏳️🌈💅
When I read and watched the film for this story in my senior year in high school...I thought that this was a hopeless romantics novel, but a very well known. This and Romeo & Juliet is another well know hopeless romantic.
There's also the 1986 TV movie staring Paul McGann.
Best version !!
Does anyone know the melody playing in the background? It also played in the A Room With a View video.
You can have the bread and butter. The bread and butter is for Gwendolyn. Gwendolyn is devoted to bread and butter.
Please proofread your work. In the notes at the top you refer to him as "Oliver Wilde."
notes for 1984

isn't the guys name jack? in my copy of the play it is jack :/
John or Jack?
i actually read this one
john and algernon?? isnt it jack and algernon at 2:17
+SIGMA Jack is his name while in town, while John is his other name
Jack in the country bud
John Worthing, J.P
nickname= Jack (in the country)
fake name= Ernest (in town)
Spoiler alert! Real name= Ernest John Moncrieff
+Malburg36 Incorrect. Jack is a domesticity for John, and is the name that he goes by while in the country though his name is actually John. Ernest is the name that he uses while in town.
by the way, in England Hertfordshire is pronounced "heartfordshire", just to let you know.
It would be great if you guys did 'under milk wood' by Dylan Thomas
How about talking about Sleepy Hallow, mainly whatever the Fox series talk about.
Lord Of the RIngs!!
spoilers ffs
Lifestyle choices? Use of that phrase shows great ignorance. What’s my motivation to see the remainder of this video? If this is any indication clearly I will be more offended than enlightened.
thanks mojo
can you do top ten note: The war of the Worlds?
Extra credit - Hertfordshire is pronounced 'Hart-fud-shur'
Could you do 10 Notes for Alice In Wonderland?
How about top 10 Deep purple songs?
A segement was on Spider-Man II
Nice recycling of the "about the author" segment from a previous video. Lazy cut 'n' paste!
It's less about being lazy and more about seeing if our audience minds it, in order to be able to create more NEW videos but indeed using the odd entry vebatim from older videos. So it's not about tricking you, but we said "if it's the same entry in the same context, we can take extra time to rewrite, rerecord and use new video, or we can use the same in a new list/entry and allow ourselves to create more." We then see if our obviously-attentive (haha) audience picks it up or even minds it.
WatchMojo.com Touche.
Who is. Supposed to. Be. The. Male character. Inn the picture.?
