2016 [월간 윤종신]2월호 'Chocolate'은 밸런타인데이를 맞아 윤종신이 오랜만에 선보이는 달콤한 감성 발라드이다. 좋아하는 사람을 향한 소년의 설렘 가득한 고백을 담았다. 노래 속 소년은 밸런타인데이에 좋아하는 사람에게 초콜릿을 받는 자신의 모습을 상상하면, 그녀에게 진심을 담아 사랑을 고백한다. "밸런타인데이에 어울리는 달달한 노래를 만들고 싶었어요. 저는 이제 밸런타인데이와는 상관이 없는 사람이 됐지만(웃음), 젊은 친구들은 얼마나 초콜릿을 받고 싶겠어요. 좋아하는 사람을 향한 두근거리는 마음, 좋아하는 사람에게 어필하는 모습들을 최대한 담아봤어요. 제가 사랑 노래 가사에서는 잘 쓰지 않았던 '어필'이라는 말도 이번에는 강조해봤고요. 최근에 제가 만든 노래 중에 가장 달달한 노래가 아닌가 싶네요."
이번 2월호에는 지난해 데뷔한 신인 보이그룹 '세븐틴'의 보컬유닛(정한, 조슈아, 도겸, 승관, 우지) 5명이 참여했다. 이번 노래는 소년의 설렘을 표현하는 것이 가장 중요한 만큼 윤종신은 자신보다는 10대 남자 아이돌을 가창자로 염두에 뒀고, 최근 보이그룹 중 가장 눈에 띄는 세븐틴에게 참여를 제안했다. 세븐틴 보컬유닛은 윤종신이 원하는 느낌대로 풋풋하면서도 청량감있는 소년의 감정을 잘 살려 달콤한 고백송을 완성시켰다. "이번 노래는 80년대 레트로풍이거든요. 제가 하이틴이었을 때 들었던 '쿨 앤드 더 갱(Kool & the Gang)'이나 '엘 드바지(El DeBarge)'의 스타일을 재현해보려고 했어요. 솔직히 처음에는 세븐틴 친구들을 섭외하면서도 고민이 조금 있었어요. 이 친구들이 태어나기도 전에 유행했던 스타일이기도 하고 또 뉴페이스들이기도 해서 과연 소화해낼 수 있을지 걱정을 했거든요. 하지만 기우였어요. 디렉을 할 게 별로 없었을 정도로 제가 딱 원했던 느낌대로 불러줘서 깜짝 놀랐어요. 참 센스있는 친구들이라고 생각했습니다."
윤종신은 가사에서 남자들의 다양한 고백 유형을 넣어 듣는 재미를 주기도 했다. "도입 부분에 '너는 내게 유일했어. 감히 내가 사랑이라 말할 수 있는 girl only you'에서는 한 사람만 좋아하는 순정파 스타일, 중간에 '너는 달라 많이 달라 이미 스쳐갔던 그녀들과는 달라'에서는 약간 날라리(?) 스타일, '누굴 선택해도 좋아. 나의 솔직한 맘 너에게 전한 걸로 그걸로 만족할게'는 남자다운 스타일 등 다양한 남자들의 마음을 대변하고 있어요. 유형에 따라 가사를 음미해보는 것도 재밌을 것 같습니다. 내가 너에게 더 많은 달달함을 줄테니, 초콜릿은 나중에 줘도 괜찮다는 이 남자..꽤 괜찮은 남자 아닌가요?(웃음)"
레트로풍의 사운드와 로맨틱한 가사가 돋보이는 밸런타인데이 감성 발라드 'Chocolate'은 윤종신, 이근호가 공동 작곡하고, 윤종신이 작사했다.
