Apparently Meshuggah is a defined as "crazy" "foolish" and used as a double entendre. The lyrics "I know of saccharine and I know of insulin" both are which something sweet or made of sugar. It sounds as though he is singing "You give me sugar". I take it as some things in life can be sweet but can also make you foolish. I love this band. :')
Also meshuggah was a late 90s metal band!
Took me a few listens, but I finally understood the genius of this song (and album), they capture such a unique type of sadness and nostalgia, and it's so very beautiful
I think the connecting theme between all the music in Unknown Mortal Orchestra is the inherent self-destructive nature of humanity. And I don’t mean the degradation of society as a whole, I mean the destruction one does to oneself as an individual. So many of the music videos show how poisonous true freedom can be. It shows people celebrating their free will and ability to love, but also slowly revealing how those same people can’t help but to follow each one of their own desires and emotions. Songs like Everyone Acts Crazy Nowadays and That Life depict people doing hedonistic, liberating dancing and merriment, but slowly shows them knowing nothing but that life, as if an invisible hand is forcing them to do these things.
There’s a strange beauty in it, seeing and hearing someone willingly sting their own soul, with the same fervent passion one would pray to a altar. It’s almost as if they can’t not do it, as if they _have_ to take these self-destructive actions; slaves to their own desires.

Nailed. It. I would add that the irony of the beautiful melodic landscapes contrasts with this concept of self-destruction in a way that makes me think that a true nihilist does indeed care about something. They're passionate about entropy.
Guilty as charged, but also aware. It hurts, but hard to escape or resist for a multitude of reasons. Well written. ❤UMO.

Went on a day trip to Michigan and Chicago and this song was played and played in my head the whole time. I’ve been with UMO since the beginning, so happy he released some true groundbreaking material like this 💯
I Don't Care what they're covering or what they're singing I love this band I am always telling people about them. I live in Beaverton Oregon and I keep telling people they are the best band from Portland ever.😊

My favourite song on the new album. Before I first heard it a few days ago, I thought for a second that it might've been inspired by the awesome Swedish metal band; Meshuggah but it's obviously not. I can't get enough of the "You Give Meeeeeeshuggah" part. So good!

Just saw UMO at 930. A lot of chapters and demands on the viewer/listener in this vid. Scattershot 80s vibe early. 4/10 early then tenaciously fought its way to 8/10. Wonderfully melodic song. And: back to the 930 show: 10/10. Superb.
