Well it costs 1500 EUR! If it was without the machined aluminium trickstery, it'd cost significantly less so lot more people will buy it, instead of those ugly sounding, hollow, empty boxes for 100 EUR!

Is the volume knob operation on the Sony smooth like a home audio receiver? Or do you feel the ‘clicks’ of the pot as you turn up the volume? Then when using the optical output is the volume variable with the knob on the Sony like normal or do you need to use the volume control on your processor?

I love the look . Which is the next best car radio from Sony as this one is out of my price range.
Good looking and spec, however the inputs on the front should be either duplicated or moved to the rear for a less messy install.

The most high end head unit on the market. That bieng said buy the pioneer , it has a time alignment processor built in. This head unit is elegant and clean with less buttons for purists.

I have out my entire collection on a usb drive, 1 Terabyte, 30,000 FLAC songs, 3000
albums. Installed for now at USB1, and evenutally when all is working at USB2.
The problem is that the Sony app, Music Central, does not allow direct
access to any title on the disk. One must either scroll literally
by album (without any names except “Album1,” “Album2,” etc) or
resort to “Shuffle” through the whole set of titles. If I
wanted to listen to, say, the “Steely Dan, Aja” album, there is no way to search for it. I would have no
way to access it directly. Once in play, the app will show the title
and artist, and album.... but not in advance when seeking the title
directly. Any ideas?

why would you have all the interface inputs in the front? most anyone who is serious about quality will most likely prefer a stealthy install rather than have all these cables exposed and in the way of dash console and shifter. the 80prs has the right idea

okay, general audiophile needs , in my opinion, are - sound processor, highest quality audio output from rca or optical (seriously no need for internal amp, as people who buy these head units, in 99% cases, have money to purchase an amp and a good set of component speakers, and the internal head units amp rarely gets used - why? not enough power to drive normal components), and an affordable price. I don't get, how you can talk about usb ports in a head unit of this cost. main reason why head units like these are sold, is to achieve a high quality audio output.

It's your mobile phone or whatever tablet you want. The whole unit is completely remote controlable.
After so many years, I'm very wary of Sony car audio gear... I admit that given a few things I've seen of late, it really does look like Sony is trying really hard to correct things... But at that price, no way - I work too hard to risk anything that pricey that came from the company that brought us the "Xplod" line up...

I was really hoping that this would be some competition for the Pioneer Dex P99-RS. Clearly sadly it is not even close.
For a deck that cost nearly $500 more. It's not even in the same league. This is disappointing considering I'm a huge Sony fanboy.
But credit needs to be given where it's due. Pioneer clearly has set a very high benchmark for others to follow. :/
This unit is in an entirely different class from any Pioneer unit. Who the hell wants a cd player with purple and pink flashing lights and a bunch of promo ads? This is for people who want beautiful sound with clarity. Unfortunately a car interior is one of the worst possible listening environments.
@@JustLikeGreta The P-99RS was specifically designed for everything you just said and more. No flying dolphins or pink flashing lights lol. In fact it has a plain old while & black display.
Which can be kind of hard to read in the daylight. It doesn't have a preamp either. Which can cause unnecessary audio artifacts in your audio source. It is primarily designed for full active systems.
High learning curve on this however but it's well worth it. Best deck I've ever had bar none!! But that doesn't mean it doesn't have its problems. It won't support Flack or many of the newer formats which sucks.
The Sony unit I think probably does which is a huge bonus. I'm always open to suggestions however. Since my Pioneer is primarily Comp only!! I still need a unit for my normal driving vehicle. Which doesn't have the space for added SQ. :)
