One of my favorite stories in history was that although everyone loved Adlai Stevenson, they thought he just wasn't tough enough. But at the United Nations hearings on the Cuban Missile Crisis, he proved everybody wrong. Way to go, Adlai. You did us proud. What a treasure you are to us, Sir, for now and always. Thank you.
My favorite scene in Thirteen Days was Adlai addressing the U.N. "Don't wait for the translation, Yes or No?!"

You need to watch "The missiles of October" (1974).
Adlai Stevenson - one of the great men of that era. He may not have become President, but many good people did not. This was his finest hour, and a turning point in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Stevenson wanted to be Secretary of State, but served nobly at the United Nations - a cause he deeply believed in.
Sue me, but Thirteen Days got me here! The pivotal UN hearing scene was exquisite and I'm glad to have found the original here.

Can't people learn about history without getting angry about it? People need to learn from the past not live in it, what's done is done all people need to do is learn from it and make sure to never repeat similar incidents ever again.
Wow! Three years ago I made this comment on the 47th anniversary. It is even more appropriate because it is exactly 50 years to the day he made this address! Amazing! 1962-2012. Thank you, Governor/Ambassador Stevenson. Never forget how close we came...

Max Rostaing I think the big difference is that the US didn’t try to deny the existence of missiles in Turkey... the Soviets refused to admit that there were any nuclear missiles on the island at all, though that was false.

Telling someone to "go do research" is a lazy and pathetic way to dismiss something they are saying. I have tremendous respect for JFK but the in this instance it was the US actions that were a threat to world peace.

There is very good reason for the US to be hated in the developing world. Perhaps it is you who should do some research. You may not be so proud to learn of how the US has propped up vile dictators, deposed democratic governments or other vile actions to preserve US profits or hegemony.
I fully understand why the US put Jupiter missiles in Turkey, but all Kuruschev did was give the US a taste of their own medicine.
Ultimately Kuruschev got what he wanted, which was the removal Jupiter missiles and a secure Cuba; even though it cost him his career.
Your response is similar to Zorins.The fact of the matter is the Soviets were wrong and completely misjudged the American and Western response. The United States didnt start the crisis,you can duck weave and distort facts as much as you want .History if you understand like you say you do makes a mockery of your somewhat silly claims.

Utterly fascinated by the whole Cuban Missile Crisis affair. I have learned that much went on over those highly tense days and Adlai Stevenson was a major player here. Both Bobby and John Kennedy had little time for this man, regarding him as "ineffectual". Adlai, in turn, was rather cold on the two brothers but here, in the world's spotlight he relentlessly grilled his UN counterpart to the point where even the Kennedys were impressed. His finest hour.

I was 8 yrs old when this happened. It's not possible to convey the seriousness in which everyone took this threat. We practiced drills.. Had houses to go to (kids in school), in case of an exchange.. some people dug shelters in their back yards..
I to was 9 and recall the same experience. We are now brothers.

Stevenson had the guts to take on Eisenhower twice, regardless of how popular old Ike was. The first time, he didn’t seek the nomination; he was perfectly happy being Governor of Illinois. The Democratic Party came to him. The second time, he fought for the nomination. The fact that Stevenson was nominated a second time says a lot about him; that wouldn’t happen today! In fact, a large faction of the party wanted him to try a third time, but John F Kennedy had built up solid support before the 1960 Convention.

Stevensen said the missiles aimed at the USSR in Europe were publically deployed, in response to a previous deployment of missiles aimed at Europe, by the USSR.
Do you think Kruschev thought he could simply aim nuclear missiles at whomever he chose, for as long as he liked, with out ever provoking a response?

I never met Governor, Presidential Candidate, Ambassador Adlai Stevenson II, however, I worked on the Senate re-election campaign, and interned in the Senate office of, his son, Adlai III. During that time, I met his family, including his gracious wife, Nancy Stevenson and his oldest son, Adlai Stevenson IV (we called him "Four"). They, and ALL of the Stevenson staff, were very decent, honest people sincerely concerned for the welfare of others. Later on, during my 8 years as a legislative aide in a Southern state legislature, I met other politicians, and their operatives, who were, not only nearly as moral as Adlai Stevenson, but were blatant criminals. Oh, well. Just for fun: Isn't McLean Stevenson from Bloomington? He was at the height of his success in MASH in 1974, when he arrived in Libertyville, Illinois (at the old Stevenson farm) to appear at a political rally for his cousin, Adlai Stevenson III. The power of AES in this crisis was first that he had the facts on his side, and secondly, his long and internationally recognized reputation as a proponent of disarmament and peace. He had been involved in setting up the UN in 1945 so when he took the unequivocal position that the missiles must go, both the Amer. public and the world understood that he spoke for more than just the US govt.

Who came here after watching the movie 13 days?
I noticed on another video of this where a balding person seated on the far right side of the straight table moved away and another took his place. Then suddenly he was back, moved away and was again replaced. Film editing in action. Look at that same area and you will see that this also was edited.
This was when we walked to the brink of nuclear war. The Kennedy government stared the USSR down and they blinked thankfully.

@HeavyArms0404 Let's not talk about credibility in world politics regarding the US and the USSR during the Cold War. The US was lacking that credibility ever since 'Operation PBSUCCESS', which was criticized even by its allies.
What you say about the ICBMs is true, but remember it went both ways. Not to forget they both 'discovered' ballistic subs. But in a way, the fact that they could both nuke each other arses off, brought some stability to the Cold War.

To be fair, the US *did* start this crisis in a sense by placing nuclear missiles all throughout Europe in the 1950s. Russia was trying to regain some sort of balance.
What Americans didn't realize at the time was, as frightened they were of the Soviets, the Soviets were of them.
Balance? The EU and US were trying to stop the expansion of the Communists.
I mean nuclear strategic balance.
+Robert Cornhole The nukes were there because the Soviets had created a 5:1 numerical advantage over the Americans, and had repeatedly attempted to get everything they wanted through naked military force. The US removed the majority of it's military power after WW2. Nukes were the only real option in that sort of grossly asymetric environment. The Soviets weren't afraid of the Americans, they just wanted to shift the situation back to a place where they could do what they always wanted to do in the first place, grab what they want and shoot anyone that looked at they crosseyed.
I disagree the USSR started all this mess with the Berlin Blockade. Thank Gd cooler heads prevailed.

You believe the USSR won the crisis because it achieved a strategic goal. In reality the military gain was almost irrelevant. You're correct that it was a strategic maneuver, but they had a political goal. It was an attempt by the USSR to sway global perception in their favor. The USSR might have gained militarily, but this event made them look like an aggressor and their image took a serious hit. This exchange on the UN floor did immense damage to the USSR's credibility.

It's interesting... essentially the USSR 'won' the missile crisis by having the US missiles that were in range of Russia removed from Turkey and Italy in exchange for the removal of the Soviet missiles in Cuba. The USSR can hardly be blamed for this. It was basically a strategic maneuver that paid off.

I'm reading RFK's memoir of the CMC now and watching relevant speeches. We may soon come to a similar crisis with China. Kennedy was masterfully prudent, incremental, firm, restrained, and courageous in the face of a potentially apocalyptic crisis with an opaque adversary.

@rukhsta Thus, the reason why Kennedy wanted to go into vietnam. He won the race on an anticommunism platform, promising to push back communism rather than just contain it. The loss in the Missle Crisis made him desperate for a win, so he looked for a communist nation to fight that was 1.) economically and militarily weak, 2.) would not start WW3 if we attacked it, and 3.) would, if defeated, count as a victory for Kennedy and America.

He never became president because the times were against him. But this was his moment. After this, the world knew that the USSR was placing nuclear missiles in Cuba. The western hemisphere united against soviet aggression after this.

Adlai Stevenson full-well knew the Soviet's basing missiles in Cuba was in response to the US placing Jupiter missiles in Turkey. Adlai makes the fake accusation that the Soviets claim the cause of the crisis was the US finding and reporting the existence of Soviet missiles in Cuba.
Is it too much to suggest that both the US and USSR made moves that could have inadvertently led the world to catastrophe? Both nations installed puppet states and engaged in proxy wars. JFK in his 1963 American University speech came close to saying exactly that, and Premier Kruschev had tears in his eyes when signing the memorial book at US Embassy in Moscow. Had both men held onto power, many differences would have been made. The Soviets lost 20 million people in WW2/Great Patriotic War and it was a national trauma. Still, given the scale of mass murder by Stalin, of his own people, it is hard for me to imagine that he is the most popular leader in today's Russia, and I hope my Russian friends can help me to understand that.
