Gastrointestinal (GI) Bleeding - What It Is, What To Look For, Risks, Diagnosis & More
Your digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine or colon, rectum, and anus. Bleeding can come from any of these areas. The amount of bleeding can be so small that only a lab test can find it.
Signs of bleeding in the digestive tract depend where it is and how much bleeding there is.
Signs of bleeding in the upper digestive tract include:
Bright red blood in vomit
Vomit that looks like coffee grounds
Black or tarry stool
Dark blood mixed with stool
Signs of bleeding in the lower digestive tract include:
Black or tarry stool
Dark blood mixed with stool
Stool mixed or coated with bright red blood
GI bleeding is not a disease, but a symptom of a disease. There are many possible causes of GI bleeding, including hemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, tears or inflammation in the esophagus, diverticulosis and diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, colonic polyps, or cancer in the colon, stomach or esophagus.
The test used most often to look for the cause of GI bleeding is called endoscopy. It uses a flexible instrument inserted through the mouth or rectum to view the inside of the GI tract. A type of endoscopy called colonoscopy looks at the large intestine.

ive been having black stools ever since i fell off my bike and the handles hit and bruised my chest for two week now i went to the doctor to see if my bruise was infected (mom urged me to go) we went and they took blood samples cause i told them i was constipated nothing came out so we did xray test 2 times nth happened a aweek later i wasnt drinkin g enouhj water so like i puked expecting food iate but then it was blood so as i was going back home i feltso lightheaded and almost passed out but i got helped by some nice lady who held me back and gave me water idk if it heat thatmade me almos pass out or not. Enough water problem with black stool still happening imma go get it checked out soon and also i dont eat certain foods thatmake black stools so yeah nomed either

Black stools can be 'old' blood. I had Sepsis ( due to a cyst on my bum cheek) 10 wks ago. I needed surgery ×3 for necrotic tissue and a Stoma fitted to allow wounds to heal bacteria free. 9 weeks later I had extensive bleeding in my Stoma bag. It was thought to be from a vessel in my stomach. It was bright red 'fresh' blood, but as it slowed that blood was black. Please see your doctor. A stool sample will give a proper diagnosis. Bleeding should always be taken seriously. I hope you feel better soon
