Here's an another fan of Win2k. Never had any issues with it and it was stable as a rock (unstability because of unstable overclocking excluded) :)

I used to reconfigure these netvista machines at the IBM solution centre back in the day, and then later supported them via the call centre. I actually like their naming scheme, model and then type, because the last 3 characters were how the machine was configured with ram, cards, disks, etc.
Ah neat!!!! Thanks for sharing that info. I suppose you could easily look up that info and know exactly what was the customers configuration.

I have always found systems that cane with Windows 2000 and had a Pentium 4 cool. In my mind, the Pentium 3 was the last generation of CPUs from the windows 98 and 2000 era, and the Pentium 4 was the start of the XP era machines, but since the Pentium 4 did come out in 2000, there are a few examples of machines with Pentium 4s that originally were designed for Windows 2000.
I agree. I also really liked Windows 2000. Very stable and quite frankly worked perfectly for everything I did!
And, to be fair, XP wasn't that great in its first year, pre-SP1. Wouldn't surprise if at least some people in 2002 wanted Win2000 for stability reasons...
@@vivienm7 Yes, but I am referring to systems with Pentium 4s before XP was even a thing, and they were designed specifically for Windows 2000.
@@WalterKnox Those would have been quite rare and expensive. My recollection (and I say this as an Intel fanboy who built a 1.9GHz Willamette socket 478 system in Dec. 2001) is that the original Pentium 4 (was it 1.4-1.6GHz Willamettes on socket 423?) was mostly ignored because PIIIs cost less and performed similarly...
Wikipedia has the launch price of the 1.4GHz P4 at $644USD. By August of the next year, a 1.4GHz Socket 478 chip was $133USD.
Looking at this history more closely, I guess there would have been a few months of affordable P4s before the XP launch...
Awesome IBM machines! I never had a Windows 2000 computer, so seeing the black IBM work made me happy! I've tinkered with it in a virtual machine before so hopefully I'll get one eventually!

3:57 I worked in a large corporate office environment as a IT support person. Often we would roll out new PCs on a refresh program. Obviously we would "refresh" the oldest machines first. Once the new machines started landing on desks and the other workers learned new PCs were being rolled out, some workers would tape up the output vents so the fans would stop cooling the PC thinking they would get a new one when the old one died. If we detected any tape residue they got a referb, not a new PC.

Big Blue will always be my favorite pc maker, as they changed the world of computing forever back in 1981 with their first pc---we still use the standards they set even now in modern computing. I love both of those systems, and the second one is a real blast from the past---Win95 with an MMX processor, wow! Great video

I used to deal with a lot of older SFF PCs (and I still do.) One of my all time favorite computers is the IBM Thinkcentre S51. I believe it was made by Lenovo, as some but not all of them have Lenovo branding on the bottom, but I think they were still designed by IBM. It was one of the last good machines before Lenovo started watering them down. The drives lift up on a hinge like they do there, instead of using IDE HDDs though, they use SATA. A while back I had one that would recognize the HDD intermittently, and I could never get through a Windows XP installation. It took me several hours of working on it to figure out it was a bad SATA cable, like you mentioned. It was just not something that was even on my radar because it wasn't kinked or anything on the exterior. I replaced that cable and it woks just fine, and I felt really dumb for overlooking something so simple.
That's how we all learn though. That Ureka moment haha.

Those desktop branded PCs give me mixed feelings, on one hand I love the form factor, on the other if PSU or MB fail it's hard to replace. They are fantastic for Win98SE, with SB audio and a PCI or AGP video card. Fun video, thanks!

I noticed the game Sorry! on the 2nd machine. Such a fun game to play. The pieces talks and throw out taunts. Really a must play game if you haven't tried it yet.
I think it needs a good tear down and restoration treatment. Give it the love it deserves.. Then some games are in order :)

I have just picked up an IBM Intellistation M Model 6220 which many of the same parts as the Netvista. I have replaced the non standard dvd drive for the original cd rom to keep it original.

I've used Windows 2000 for a while in the late 2000's and it was very rock-solid and very stable, it became one of personal favorite versions of Windows. At one point I had Windows 2000 as my daily driver in the late 2000's on my old Gateway G6-350. You should do a fresh reinstall of Windows 95 on the IBM 300GL
Nice and I completely agree, extremely stable.
That first machine seems to be used as a dev box given by all the installed tools. Maybe there is some (long forgotten) source code on it.
I do love these form factors. Might i recommend a Compaq Deskpro EN as well? My only pet peeve is it is PCI only so onboard Intel i810 video only,
You may be right! I've been looking for Compaq systems to test out.
I have similar systems to both of those. FYI, both those systems are OS/2 hardware certified. The older system had the option of OS/2 Warp 3 pre installed. The newer one had the option of OS/2 Warp 4 pre installed. Wouldn't that be crazy if you found one of those! Highly unlikely. I have an older generation with a P166 I bought brand new at Radio Shack back in the day and it came with Warp 3 pre installed and it still works. The CRT monitor just bit the dust recently 😢
Thanks for this info and for Sharing! Shame about the CRT, they seem to be harder and harder to get. I can always get one shipped... however there is never a guarantee that it will arrive in one piece. OS/2 Warp 3 / 4 I have never tried before... would be an interesting ride!
Sometimes i wonder how come Intel stopped making motherboards since most manufacturers seemed to use their boards. The black Netvista has a rebranded Intel board too and HP,Acer and Dell used a lot of Intel boards too. They didn't have that many features even if you'd buy their retail boards but they almost last forever. Also i like the fact that they used a Seagate hard drive instead of their own IBM ones :) The original owner actually opted for that 40 GB drive because these used to start from 15-20 GB as base models. My grandpa had the tower version of that computer and his had a 20GB IBM drive

I always wanted back then a p4, even if I never had one and I dodge the bullet still seems like when computers were growing up. Nowadays I have a Athlon xp that refuses to die that is the closest thing even better. But still want one even if I can't do much with it. I like watching this video the desktop design still looks classy and really useful. Also I don't consider those 775 ones as pentium 4, those were like defected coreduo recycled with other name but a bit better than a celeron. This ones were between p3 and a pentium duo.
It's cool that your keeping your Athlon XP alive! What are you using it for.. Retro games?
@@TheRetroRecall ironically I had the backup of my old pc in some ide hdd and then put the files on the modern one in sata, so it keep all the windows xp I had before moving to 7 and then to 10 in the 775 core2quad. So I have a functional xp with all the stuff I used in the past even if has 2 80gb hdd. Except for browsing I have all the emulator and office programs, even had burning software and more but I couldn't find a working dvd drive yet.
Sadly the fx5200 needs recap if not I even could run n64 and nds emulation.
Besides that being xp I can transfer anything by usb even from my laptop with Linux

I tried to install some modern Linux with unetbootin but I had not luck for browsing.
I didn't know that IBM gave away its desktop PC division away to Lenovo.

My experience with PCs says that the motherboard was replaced and the tech ignored the option to type in the serial number when prompted. Usually on first boot a replacement OEM motherboard will prompt you to enter the serial number. Btw I love IBM systems. In High School we had PC 330/350 (Student Computer Lab) , and 300GL (Teacher Workstations) When I was working at Disney in the early 2000s they had IBM SurePos 500 registers. I was so fascinated by the AIO design and through research was able to find there was a kinda sorta non POS version. The X40/41. Loved the design of the X40 but crippled by a horrific SIS chipset. (Should've stuck with Intel) X41 corrected many of the issues and offered the Pentium 4.

I heard about that but wasn't sure. Made sense though considering the lower budget systems of the time.
Those SiS chipsets were a bit annoying to some people because there were some computers that had AGP slots but they were actually deactivated because of some chipset limitations. When people bought graphics cards for them and inserted them into the slot realizing they don't work they got pretty angry about it
I would love to get my hands on a beige ibm monitor. Hard thing is getting it shipped and it arriving in one piece.
I have a bunch of those IBM 300GL's good for Windows 95 & DOS. I think Windows 2000 is wasted on a Pentium 4 in todays retro world. I would reduce the RAM to 256MB and install Windows 98SE on it and spray paint the front white to match the optical drive and then put wood grain effect on the rest of the case. I do like Windows 2000 but I save it for the dual core machines.
I agree regarding Win2k and dual core functionality (unless I want to relive the O/S on a random machine). If I fully restore the P4 system a Win98se installation with 256mb of ram would be great. Even Windows XP considering the ability to add dedicated graphics... the challenge would be finding a decent low profile graphics card of that era.

Unfortunately it's difficult for me to help you :( There are sooo many factors that could contribute to this. Does the computer power up? Have you checked the video cable to your monitor (maybe a different monitor is required)? Have you tried taking the RAM out and trying only one stick (module)? Have you tried cleaning the RAM slot? Are there any beep codes from the BIOS? As you can see - there are may troubleshooting steps you can take, but again - it would all depend on what symptoms you are getting and what the results of each T/S step is.
Was the Internet Explorer Win 95 splash screen changed after the antitrust suit?
Haha that's a great point! I am not entirely sure. I don't think it was related to that. I think the Microsoft Internet Explorer writing was a result of installing the version of 95 that had it preinstalled.
you might want to make a ghost image of that drive before that dies as who knows how long that wd caviar drive will continue to live for

My first computer was the white box IBM only had a 10GB drive with 32MB Ram

Two well built computers!👍👍 This is my latest computer project, HP ProBook 6570b Laptop, this laptop was designed to be serviceable, the battery and the back cover are removed by simply pressing two sliding catches, then the ram., and the HD., and the Cmos battery and the fan and the CPU., are all easily accessed and the CPU., is removable.
I know this exact machine!! What are you doing to this machine as your project?
@@TheRetroRecallI cleaned the inside and the outside, I upgraded the ram., to 8 gig., but it can take 16 gig., I cleaned the fan and the CPU., and renewed the thermal paste and installed a 256 gig., SSD., I installed Linux Mint but when it tried to restart, the computer could not see the OS., so I installed Windows 10 and I may upgrade it to Windows 11, but at this time I'm just pleased that it's working. The Bios on this computer is odd, this particular laptop has a Windows 8 sticker on it, so perhaps that explains the strange bios. The laptop is currently working well. In my opinion, HP deserve some praise for designing such a serviceable laptop.👍👍

@@TheRetroRecall Today, I decided to upgrade the laptop some more by using some used parts which I had in stock, so it now has it's maximum of 16 gig., of ram., and I also installed a 500 gig., SSD., the laptop is currently working well. At first I tried it with 16 gig., of Kingston ram., installed, but the laptop did not like that ram., it may have been a voltage issue because the Kingston ram., works perfectly well in another computer, the ram., which was in it was Samsung ram., and the laptop likes it, I may upgrade it to Windows 11, but that won't happen today.

Generally keep them for now. They may be used in future projects, restorations, repairs, demonstrations etc.

@@TheRetroRecall I'm sorry I noticed the icon that looks like a bunch of buildings I noticed it said Citrix on the bottom. Honestly. I would 100% recommend dumping everything for back up. I know it sounds dumb but seeing old programs you just download much anymore always sees me smile. And heck who knows maybe if you're able to get the installer dump you can use it for some cool retro server project.
i think the cpu fan on the black pc sucks air in, not out. Back in those days i dont think you could get fans blowing air out with fanblades looking reversed. And its not very much normal today either. To my knowledge.
You are probably correct. Noted for the future. To me it would just make sense to send the hot air away.. And not force it into the system.

I am looking for a way of recycling a old pc to share folders with my play station so I use it as server and I can run the games without a DVD. Probably there's some routers for that but I want to use what I have remaining in storage.

I don't see any issues on the upload - 4k and just tested and looked good. Maybe your connection or UA-cam?

Agreed, with the front of the fan facing up, that is pushing air onto the heat sink and pulling air in from the back. Back always pushes air and front pulls on fans.
Strange way to have it setup though, would make more sense for it to pull the hot air from the heat sink and push it out the back through the ducting!
Exactly what I was thinking, but I guess it makes sense. Just never paid much attention to it during the testing. Good to keep an eye on for the restoration.
