The most encouraging thing about this is that he was never even expecting to sell Hard Knock Life and it ended up becoming one of Jay-Z's best songs. I got beats that I've been sitting on for years not expecting to sell. Maybe there's hope.
Wow how Mark the 45 King could produce a classic "Hard Knock Life" for $.25 is amazing. He's a genius, to take the sample for Stan w/ Dido from "Thank You" and make it a sad song is amazing. And then to put DC on the map w/ the classic party record "Let Me Clear My Throat." He should be up there w/ Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Scott Storch.
DJ premiere "you other cats take the whole hand, me, I just take the pinky" Also the reason why its incredibly hard to see where hes getting his samples. Dude is really using 0.1s clips of melodies and rearranging it. Two of my favourites.
Those "horns" or "trumpets/brass section" 45 King was referring to is actually on the record he purchased as the very first track ("Overture") which has "It's The Hard-Knock Life" section being played for a good 42 measures but, him discovering track #4 on the album ("It's the Hard-Knock Life") with the orphans/'kids'" singing was a better choice, thus resulting in him producing a great legendary arrangement.
Mark the 45 King has had a relevancy shelf-life that no one else in hip-hop can even see. From "The 900 Number" to Jay-Z and Em, he produced cutting edge, game-changing stuff decades apart. That's like a millennium in hip-hop years. Unheard of!
Maybe Dre shouldn't be there, but he was better than the others listed. He just had a drug habit which made him inconsistent. Listen to Latifah's debut album: he did the lion's share of work there, and also drops a mean verse on what's a top 3 song on the album (also produced "Ladies First" ft. Monie Love as well "Wrath of My Madness". All three are the best songs there.
It was you and the one who introduced me to you, who taught me to shop for records in those obscure bookstores and walk out with the theme songs, commercial tunes and other hard to find music back then. Thanks for EVERYTHING. PS I still have those records. R I P SALUTE.. 🙏
I love how the video just nerds the hell out, about how he tracked everything, the studio, the mic they used. Like really go into detail with it. I'm a nerd.
DJ Mark The 45 King, as we olde heads know him is one of the most organic and unsung producers of the last 3 decades. Check Latifah's first album--her hardest rhymes to date, and Mark's production overshadowed them all. His insight and connection to the music is incredible.
@No Era Penal yeah but Jay Z sold 5 million mostly off this song. this song sold 3 million BY ITSELF. this song made white people notice Jay Z and they wouldn't have done that with any Swizz song on that album
I used too watch annie as a kid and sing that when i was 7 ha im from london so it was also on the tele then every xmas .. funny that years later jay makes a hit with it .. WHY DIDN'T I USE IT HA mind u bet every one who had that record years before thinks the same ;) Dope beat
Loved your shiz, Mark. Still do. I was a huge Lakim Shabazz fan back in the day ... Black is Back AND The Red, The Black, The Green have not dated whatsoever (like much of your music). Your stuff for Chill Rob G was monumental too. Was amazed to learn you were behind Hard Knock Life and Stan. Waiting for that next classic!!!!
It's better to not oversaturate the market and to make the best with a few shots. It's better to measure a thousand times and cut ones versus measure once and cut a thousand times.
PS, yeah, the U-47 was designed back before Neumann and Telefunken merged (they split again later). I recorded on one in the studio for one album; they really are the holy grail. Frank Sinatra actually THOUGHT his was a Telefunken, and referred to it as his "Tele".
Mann, this is my foavorite Jay-z joint, and that Em joint is crazy too, you think 45 Kings ever do a video on how he actually put the beats together, from start to finish?
Great to get the background info on how the track came to Jay's attention. Is this from a longer documentary? It'd be cool to hear about the story behind The 900 Number as well.
@BigDainjerus Yeah, he did dj for Latifah, but his history goes deeeeeep! He used to hang out with all the original block party dj's in the Bronx back in the day and carry their records!
he could really be super duper rich if he wanted to (although im sure he's doing okay from his publishing on hard knock life and stan alone lol) but i understand why 45 stays out of the spotlight... he does this for the ART, not the fame. Need more like him...
@markhjames Word?! Breakout &Baron? Funky 4+1 More?? That's my dudes (& Sha :) I been feelin them since I 1st saw, Double-Trouble doin Stoop-Rap. Lil Rodney C = what a voice?! Damn. I knew you musta spent some serious time up in the Bronx with all those breaks you have! Saw you perform in L.A. Summer of '03 at Temple Bar (I think PBWolf set it up) Man! What a show! I gave up on hip hop in '04 but I'm slowly getting back into it lately. It needs a Revival man, in a major way!
Said it before and i'll say it again. The 45 King is untouchable. A true Hip Hop artist in every sense of the word.
MOST CERTAINLY. CORNERSTONE
The most encouraging thing about this is that he was never even expecting to sell Hard Knock Life and it ended up becoming one of Jay-Z's best songs. I got beats that I've been sitting on for years not expecting to sell. Maybe there's hope.
I never knew 45th made Hard Knock Life or Stan. Yo I'm so glad these 80s cats are still around making cultural cornerstones in HipHop music...
mookeychase0907 yea bruh I’m blown away
Wow I didn’t know that 🛜
look how this aged 😕
Unfortunately Mark passed away recently

I remember asking my pops who's his favorite producer ,without hesitation he said 45 king ..now I know why, dude is a damn genius
Respect 45
it's the best mic , it s the best mic ""whistle"" !!
the thing about 45 king is that, especially with Stan, he doesn't really dig deep with his samples, but he digs where most don't normally dig.
DJ premiere "you other cats take the whole hand, me, I just take the pinky"
Also the reason why its incredibly hard to see where hes getting his samples. Dude is really using 0.1s clips of melodies and rearranging it.

chris you're right !

45 King looks like Denzel mixed with "Dr J"Julius Erving.
a living legend damnn his beats are dope.
45 king is a true legend. he brought queen latifah out back in the 1980's. i miss those days
45 King is on the same level as RZA, Dre, Large Professor, Jam Master Jay, Eric B Rakim, and Havoc.
The stars were clearly aligned seeing how all this came together. Magical!
Rip 🪦 45 king ❤
It was you and the one who introduced me to you, who taught me to shop for records in those obscure bookstores and walk out with the theme songs, commercial tunes and other hard to find music back then. Thanks for EVERYTHING. PS I still have those records.

🙏
I been sleepin on 45 King. I mean I knew of him, but didn't know about him in depth. Feel like my Hip Hop card should be revoked for a minute.
haha
dope story bro that track was a damn anthem. I bought the Jay cd.
The 45 laced the beat straight audio crack!
Great back story on that classic.
45 King is very passionate about his music from what I see.
The song around 0'42-52 is TOTO, from the "IV" album I think.
I love how the video just nerds the hell out, about how he tracked everything, the studio, the mic they used. Like really go into detail with it. I'm a nerd.
It's called The 900 Number by DJ Mark the 45 King.
There's also a version with Lakim Shabazz rhyming on.
One of the most underrated ever! Master of the BEATS!
oh damn! never knew there was a raw version out there (4:31), it's cool to hear how different it is to the polished studio version
It’s from MTV Unplugged feat. Jaguar Wright & The Roots ua-cam.com/video/cI1gDgW3Mdo/v-deo.htmlm50s

DJ Mark The 45 King, as we olde heads know him is one of the most organic and unsung producers of the last 3 decades. Check Latifah's first album--her hardest rhymes to date, and Mark's production overshadowed them all. His insight and connection to the music is incredible.

Wow, what a dumbass comment? I guess they wrote them lyrics too
@@johnlee6299 he had better lyrics before and still didn't sell 5 million until this one
@No Era Penal Swizz Beatz had nothing to do with this song
@No Era Penal yeah but Jay Z sold 5 million mostly off this song. this song sold 3 million BY ITSELF. this song made white people notice Jay Z and they wouldn't have done that with any Swizz song on that album
Jay Z rapped, " I'm not a business man, I'm a "business" man.

@Cheeseburgerlike It's called The 900 Number by The 45 King.

@ThEstanBy
The funny thing is a lot of RL gangsters aren't' the way people would think they are. Some are just business men and some are tuff guys.
