This was amazing. If it was shown in theaters your expression when you found out how Herod died would alone be worth the price of admission.

@@MiriamAnzovin I should clarify. I'm fine with either, but if it's landscape as this one is, it shouldn't be padded for portrait format.

    • @MiriamAnzovin

Yes, I hear you - this was a 12 hour long marathon edit and I didn't have the energy to make two versions (and doing a mega-closeup to make it portrait mode felt a little intense) but going forward I'll do my best to provide a landscape version with reformatted captions for UA-cam.

Shalom, Geo! Welcome to Daf Reactions!
I love this video format-it's a fantastic view into another aspect of studying the Talmud.
And now, my stream-of-consciousness reaction to the study!
    - Preserving a girl's body in honey for seven years is some grade-A incel shit, which explains way more about Herod than I ever wanted to know.
    - "We don't wanna 'bee' on this planet anymore!" Oh, Miriam. 😂
    - You're worried... who will sue you? Herod?
    - "To be fair-" "We don't have to, but okay." This is the most Miriam reaction. 😂
    - I feel bad for Bava ben Buta. First he gets a lamp smashed over his head, then this whole interaction with Herod...
    - Man, Bava ben Buta's got some Nachum Ish Gamzu-level forgiveness going on. Don't curse kings, rich men, leaders, women who smash lamps over your head, or even Herod?
    - Counterpoint: if I were following some shmuck around the desert for 40 years and he told me "God said not to curse your leaders", it WOULD come off as him covering his own ass.
    - Everyone knows the 614th mitzvah is to blend! 😂
    - I don't know the story of Herod deciding to rebuild the Temple, but is the explanation supposed to be that Bava ben Buta guilt-tripped him into doing it? That has to be the most stereotypically Jewish tactic ever.
    - You know it's bad when Eleazar ben Shimon comes off as being the reaaonable one. YIKES.
    - I was going to object to the idea of Herod being Trump on the grounds that Trump would never build something on even the appearance of making amends, but considering there are still people who call it "Herod's Temple" thousands of years later... yeah, putting your name on a garish-ass building because it'll establish your brand name for millennia is exactly Trump's thing.
    - This might be the only time I've ever seen Miriam speechless. 🤣 Herod's actual death is SO MUCH BETTER than the bees being responsible!
    - That said, what the hell is it with the Talmud and phallic trauma? You've got guys being stung by wasps, the thing with the multiple holes and the ant or sharpened barleycorn or whatever it was (I mostly blocked that story out, blech 🤢), breaking it in a fall (YEVAMOT 54/BAVA KAMMA 27 STRIKES AGAIN!), and now maggots? Are we SURE this isn't the "angry second-wave feminist retelling" edition? Not that it wasn't well-deserved in Herod's case, but... I think I need to lie down.
Anyway, thank you to both of you for giving us this little window into Daf Yomi. 🥰 I'd love to see more sometime!

Thank you, Brooke! This was an INSANE Daf! Absolutely bananas! I'm glad you liked this type of video, learning this daf was so fun and I thought it would be cool to show some of the in-the-moment daf reactions, without any scripting or even knowing exactly what we were gonna learn! And LOL when I made that 614 mitzvot joke I thought... "I think Brooke might call me on this one" and you rightly did 😂 This one should be the 615th!
I agree that perhaps...had I been in the desert...I too would have been someone starting a mutiny against Moses because it IS a bit sketchy and then I would have ended up in a pit like Korach!
For the phallic trauma question, in the Talmud's defense, the information about the maggot dick (vomit) actually was from some news articles Geo googled while we were talking, so this ONE TIME the Talmud wasn't the one to give us the horrific deets!
Bava Ben Buta deserved better! And so did that girl! Wow. What a way to begin a tractate. Other tractates? TAKE NOTES

@@MiriamAnzovinThis whole thing confirms to me that the Gemara, or at least one of the authors of the Gemara, had a fantastic grasp of storytelling. Getting the audience hooked is the single most important part of a story, and "so he murdered them all and preserved one girl's body in amber" is a hell of a lede!
