For those of you who thought it'd look cool with plastic fish in it, I have an image here that will give you an idea of what that'd look like :) instagram.com/p/BQqe-_fl3XG/?taken-by=iliketomakestuff
only really "realistic" fish. Don't mess it up with something cheesy
BTW I just subbed :)
I Like To Make Stuff i like the idea of this video and most of your videos They are so tempting to do myself but im not old enough and i don't have the time and patience to do it
And BTW i like how you used Danish Oil you maybe see why
Plastic coral in the concrete might look good
How about a real fish? You're going to make sure it's really fresh. It might even stay looking normal for a while as the epoxy seals it in and there is no oxygen getting in there. On second thought......no, don't do that.
I love how this dude exclusively mentions his mistakes so we don't have to make those. you don't see people do that often, really like it!
Vincent Koster he is great
me too. good idea.
seriously. I was thinking the same thing. this guy is awesome
jiggy slim you're right. my bad
iTheGeek I accidentally chose the wrong word, yes.
Dude! Put a shipwreck in there. Awesome build!!
JerryRigEverything are you planing a clear version ??
JerryRigEverything where's the clear version?
Love your vids
JerryRigEverything excellent idea
JerryRigEverything what you doing here Agent 47
I really like that you showed your mistakes. Thats how we all learn! Nice piece.
I was the 100th to like
that is literally the best part about these vids
Your table is beautiful. The fact that it’s imperfectly perfect is a bonus!!! It’s art, handmade and fabulous.
I like how crisply edited this is, a lot of people would have taken 5x longer to give the same information.
Thank you!!
I Like To Make Stuff yes the editing was awesome. I do life to hear a little sorry behind the wants or need of someone's project (which makes it more personal) but I hate alot of wasted time. thank you for sharing this project 😆
Chris Coombes great editing job bro
LEDs would be a cool mod to make the epoxy glow. Cool project!
James Thaz maybe Bob will use his arduino skills and make it glow with a proximity sensor, just thinking...
No need of bottom LED, can hook up the LED in the wooden corners and give illumination from all sides towards the center.
Bob one your best project to date, going to make a smaller on with led and crazy pieces in bottom, mermaid, tresure chest maybe shark. Great project
yeh & fibre optics could be good here ;)
I would have totally put a Sub in the bottom with LEDs!
✔️really awesome content
✔️detailed yet efficient voice over
✔️great video editing
✔️critical eye for your own work
More UA-camrs should aspire to accomplish all of these in the way that you have. subbed & shared
+Jonah Weakland thanks so much! I really appreciate that!
I love to make stuff - I think you did and an awesome job for first try especially just because your wife love the beach I'm sure she'll want u to make another one then if you want you can worry about your so called mistake but but I love the beach too and even with the block concrete at the bottom which you'll realize you'll need for strength over the years the way you made #1
This was so cool.
Love the cross section of a beach look. I imagine this would really complicate things but I would have been so tempted to add the ruins of a sunken ship to it.
Rob Scallon rob? What are you doing here?
Blakey youtube is a magic place
Rob Scallon dude I love ypu
To add a sunken ship, fish, sharks, anything at all really; you would just need to suspend them while you poured enough layers to hold them in place while you added more layers. Imagine a child's mobile.
Didnt expect Rob here
Damn, that Danish oil finishing looked amazing.
The best thing about Danish Oil is that it actually hardens the wood because it's got tung oil in there. I did a bathroom floor with polyurethane (supposedly water protective - ha!) and got water stains immediately. I sanded it back, did a couple of coats of Danish oil and let that fully dry (24 hours minimum and the longer you leave it, the harder it gets) and *then* put a couple of coats of marine polyurethane on top. Brilliant. Did the same for a kitchen bench too.
It looks amazing but is so much work. TO get a lasting finish you have to put on lots and lots of coats
When I do my epoxy work I don't bother polishing. Most any clear finish will cover or make the epoxy go back to gloss. Ive used clear nail polish, clear spray paint, Gloss poly, and also sometimes go back and just brush a thin layer of epoxy over the edges/sanded areas to make them clear. Saves loads of time
Brad Northup That's been my experience as well. Just rub a coat or two of some clear poly.
i use the spray epoxy you can buy fairly cheap
Exactly! Too much effort for something that could be done waaaay easier
Oh, but nail polish gets yellowish with UV exposition, can ruin a beautiful piece over time, the best option is just pour a thin layer of UV resistant resin
This is a good video. one of the best things about this video is that this guy just gets to the point. too many videos out there where they take forever to say nothing. this guy doesn't do that. good job.
Dude, you crushed it. Looks phenomenal!
One of my In-laws loves the beach and this has given me a slew of ideas for future Christmas gifts.
Excellent!
A few sea shells, after the concrete dried, or partially buried in the concrete, might have looked cool.
These were my thoughts too. A bunch of those tiny sea shells on the "seabed" would have looked really cool and would have helped to accentuate the fact that it is supposed to look like the ocean (a fact which alluded me at first glance).
Concrete doesn't dry. It's a chemical process.
John Adams I thought about that, or maybe some rocks and coral, but ultimately I think the table is too thin for that kind of detailing. With the look of the concrete beneath he epoxy, the table looks more like a large cut of ocean than a small portion of beach, so anything put into it for detail would probably have looked oversized.
Thank you for that important correction, Martin. Without it, no one would have known what I meant. You are a saint and a scholar...
You meant elude. When you allude to something, you mention it without discussing it at length.
I like this Yotuber cause he show us his mistakes! So we can learn, he can learn, we grow, he grow as well!!
Should've put a dead fish in it.
Or fake fish at least lol
I was thinking the same...
hahahaha
James Thaz NO!! no toy fish, use real fish for authenticity
Or some lures
Maybe some plastic plants/ rocks / coral
Bob, this is so cool in about 12 different ways. the legs are perfect, they remind me of old dock pilings....This was stunningly brilliant.
Thanks Andy!!
Even when you make a project that I have no interest in making, your videos and process explanations are always fun to watch. Thank you for posting this.
That's very kind, thank you!
I think it looks great, straight out the gate he stated he had never worked with concrete or epoxy and didn't hide his mistakes!!! Big up's!
You should make a larger one that looks like an island.
Nice, a dinner table with the island being the decorative center piece. Maybe add a volcano on the island that you can also use as an ice bucket for champagne.
Sonn Ikdoh that would be amazing!
Sonn Ikdoh that's way to heavy unless you can drive a forklift through your home
Steven Wilkins Throughout all my years of construction, I found there's 3 types of people on that site. The guy that just waits to get told what to do. The guy that always says it can't be done. And the guy that refuses to take no for an answer.
Sonn Ikdoh well I don't work on a construction site I'm the guy that just waits to be told what to do though
When I saw the title I thought it was a Pete brown video
:)
Peppa Pug same! I was like 'epoxy?! ILTMS?! Nah this is peter brown work.'
I Like To Make Stuff Hi I'm I'm a really big fan of your channel!! I Have been subbed for A very long time!! Keep up the good work! !
Is it heavy to lift? I know there isn't much concrete but all that epoxy makes me think it would be
Peppa Pug I love peter brown and I like to make stuff
If anyone is wondering if lights can be incorporated, I used a dollar store led light kit submerged in resin, works great. It was a similar project and have to be creative with hiding the battery pack. I hid the LEDs behind broken prices of resin to hide the shape of the bulbs. Nice video, great job!!!
Thank you for sharing. It is good to show that not everything goes right even for someone as capable as you. Beautiful result
Why are people saying add things to this?!? It's perfect. Adding seashells or model shipwrecks would make it look so kitsch and like a souvenir from a beach town. This is art, as is.
Comrade Jason contemplate your first question, and then ask yourself why youre such an idiot. Thanks
Contemplate why you feel the need to be such a dick.
Absolutely. Less is more.
I love when dilettantes declare what is and isn't art. It would be kitschy If it was done badly
I think it could be done tastefully, but to each their own.
That top turned out beautiful!!
Thanks!
Great job
What kind of epoxy is that ?
Awesome, effect Bob. This has to be one of my favs for sure.
Thanks Mike!
I Like To Make Stuff can you make a galaxy tables🌌🌜
This is one of my absolute favorites for multiple reasons. The lessons and pros/cons as well as the ingenuity and the carpentry skills. Thank you for doing this!
I've watched your channel since you started, and this is my favorite project you've ever done! Great job Bud! And thanks SO much for the links to the materials!
Great project and thanks for the shout out!
Thanks for the help!
Anyone with taste can clearly see its art as it is and would look tacky as hell, with fake fish or boats! Mans got class! Excellent craftsman 👌🏼
If you hadn't been told what it's supposed to be I bet you'd struggle to guess what it was meant to be just looking at a photograph. But with a few fish or some kelp coming up? You'd 100% know what it was meant to be.
Put octopus, some crabs, seahorses pirate treasure, etc
You are not better than anyone
You are not better then anyone?? Hahaha. Thanks for the laugh. Are you 12?
Yes but the extra stuff would give is character and make it more original
As long as your mrs is happy, nothing else matters.Always learn from your mistakes & shortcuts.Nice piece of furniture.
Nice job!One trick I use when polishing clear/translucent plastic is to only take the finish up to 400/600 grit, and then I hit it with a good clear (acrylic) coat. It fills in all the micro scratches and gives you a good gloss finish. Saves a ton of time sanding, and unless you look at it with a magnifying glass you can't tell the difference.Cheers!
Howie Balch shellac brand? This is a good idea. I've used shellac to seal clocks and other wood projects
I like how clearly you speak and explain what you're doing. Some of these videos are frustrating with bad audio or mumbling. Great vid!
Very nice work, Bob!!
Thank you!!
It's so rare to find youtube videos like this that get right to the point. 👏👏👏
You can still hide that chip if you wish. That would've been impossible for me to avoid.
-
Epoxy is cross-linking. The polymer chains of the cured epoxy reactivate when in contact with the liquid resins.
The CA glue (cyanoacrylate / super glue) dissolved by acetone (fingernail polish remover) would likely reactivate the epoxy as well, ruining the finish and creating more work.
Rather than dissolving the glue or cutting off the chip and reusing that piece, you'd have better results by cutting out the entire chip and glued surface.
Then coat a flat surface with cooking spray and clamp it to the side of the table. Seal it between the flat surface form and the table just below the area to be repaired. Use something you can remove easily, such as a thin layer of silicone. Just make sure you don't squeeze the silicone into the work area.
Don't worry about smoothing the cut surface, the epoxy resin will reactivate, or melt basically, that surface and it won't show. Just make sure it's free from dust.
Prepare some more epoxy. Make sure you use the same amount of dye, but don't use more. You're better to use less than more. In fact, clear epoxy will actually work alright on a piece that small.
Work a thin layer onto and into the cut surface, then pour your casting resin until just above grade.
Then prepare the surface just as you have before.

I sincerely believe you probably already know this, but others reading may not.
Nerd
Optional ways to make it look more "oceany" that I am thinking of for my attempt:
while concrete is still wet poor in sand and press down lightly and then use shop vac and air compressor to remove sand from mold, leaving a thin sand surface that stuck to the concrete. Press in seashells if desired, a sand-dollar would look great! Maybe go to craft store and purchase dried/fake starfish as well. Maybe some decorations from an aquarium store/section meant to put in fish tanks? I've seen fake corals, anemones, and even fake fish like clown-fish and such.
brushing a thin layer of epoxy over the sanded epoxy makes it glossy and clear. Also would seal your concrete and make it look "wet"
This is genius, I love your artwork! You inspire other creative people such as myself!
super cool idea and process!
Wait, so I made it... Now how do I feed the fish? They seem to be completely stuck in the resin?!?
Try put squirtle
LOL
Drill feeding holes
I wish at the end of these video's they showed the amount of hours invested, and the total cost of materials. I think that would be really, really, cool. For me, someone who is considering getting back into wood-working, I think knowing/understanding the amount of commitment, in hours & money, would definitely be helpful.
This is a work of ART! I’m so mesmerized by your craftsmanship. AWESOME job!
A few years ago I epoxied a stump as a side table. It took way too long but I didn't go through all the polishing like you. I just sanded the top and then mixed up a small batch of epoxy and brushed it on like varnish. It dried crystal clear.
Yes, as soon as I heard Bob mention sanding and polishing I assumed he was using Polyester resin. I wouldn't dream of polishing epoxy resin, even wax makes scratches disappear in epoxy.
People in the comments *you should have put a SpongeBob figure to look like bikini bottom* lmao how about you make your own and appreciate this guy's hard work. looks amazing.
I like this guy ^^^
A tiny little clown fish and you could tell everyone that visits that you found Nemo, and you are holding him until his dad and Dory come for him.
ssssshhhh I'm pretty sure it was just a joke.
Man, you should have totally put a little shark and shipwreck in there....
I was about to say that, too.
It turned out so cool! I would love a table in my house with that much craftsmanship, beauty, and elegance.
Awesome creation.. in regard to polishing resin; there is a product called Flitz. It is available in a pretty large tube and you can use this to polish resin to a glass like perfect shine. It works well at removing any scratches and imperfections. This would be used after the wet sanding routine as a final finishing step applied with a buffer or polishing cloth. I have seen this used a lot to restore pieces as well. (hope this helps)
Really like your achievement; most impressive especially considering it was a first time resin project :)
Thinking of ways to utilize the concept but on a worn coffee table and maybe try layering with actually sand in the resin as any inclusions sink to the bottom of each layer anyway...thanks for the inspiration!
Flitz is my Shitz.
Sometimes the best "polish" you can use on epoxy is just another thin layer of epoxy!
I think that's worth exploring...
The ocean is one of the most relaxing places on earth. I see why she likes it. My bathroom is done in beach/ocean.
As artistic as it gets. Wouldn't change a bit of it. Magnificent!
Cool table however, i think if you made the bottom layers of epoxy darker thatn the top layers (fade dark to light) it would look more realistic.
Thanks! I think in theory that would work, but in reality, there would be a really distinct line in between the epoxy pours, viewable on the sides. From the top, it'd probably look really cool though.
I Like To Make Stuff Bob, different dyes different weight... use 2 in each layer abd you are golden :)
well, the darkness of the depths of the oceans are really just absence of light, so I dont think any more than 13 drops of blue at the lowest to 10 drops of blue at the highest, would have been needed to add the depth without making the layers obvious on the sides 😊
it's not meant to look that deep
You should make a coat rack out of a pine tree. Like one that stands up and has the branches cut off short to hold coats and hats
some plants or seaweed inside would have looked cool and maybe a fake fish!!
Yeah, could of put a whale and some fish in would of looked good I reckon.
Perhaps some pieces of driftwood, or a half-buried wreck of an old wooden ship...or all of the above :P but then it would be an ocean instead of a beach of course :)
I 100% love that one of the things I'm regularly seeing in the maker space is the self-reflection "Here's what I did that didn't turn out how I wanted" and "here's what I would do to fix it". Because perfect is the enemy of good enough and we're all striving to improve.
Not sure if someone has already commented on the white look of the concrete, because there are so many comments, but I just wanted to give my reasoning for that result.
The water/cement ratio didn't have nearly enough water in your mixing process. You want it to have the consistency of peanut butter. During the curing process, the cement sucked the limited amount of water it had available, and thus turns a whitish color. In addition to the white color, your 28 day strength will also be diminished greatly, and may become weakened/brittle. Water is essential in the strengthening process, and will also give you a nice grey color.
Besides that, this table is a brilliant and beautiful design. Thanks for sharing!
A bit late here...but will add....more water in your mix will also help with getting a smoother edge. It will respond much better to vibration. It'll also polish up to a nice sheen.
Exactly my thoughts. Little trick I do is spray it with water during the curing process.
Or may be in this particular project, make the cement part first then make a seperate mold for the epoxy, slightly bigger so a thin layer of epoxy would cover the side of the cement for a more consistent surface for polishing. But overall this is an amazing project
This looks awesome!
This would make a nice bar!
I like it but I feel like you could've added shells and starfish
And toy fish with sharks.
Sketch It D.I.Y,money, it was what I needed to end felix
I really liked your video. You are easy to listen to and it just the right speed. I do resin jewelry and paperweights. The table is a work of art. I can't believe you just jumped into it. Thanks for sharing.
Do a collab with grant thompson the king of random
One of these days. We're trying to come up with a good idea.
We need the ultimate collab:
Woodworks - Bob, I like to make stuff
Electricals - Great Scott
Metalwork - This old Tony
Dániel Bulyovcsity lets one up that idea. Get Bob, Jimmy Diresta, Great Scott, Pete Brown, and This Old Tony to do a collab. Jimmy for dsign, Bob for wood, This Old Tony for metal, Pete Brown for epoxy/resin, and Great Scott for electrical.
They could build a table, fill it with epoxy resin, and electrocute it with high voltage !!!
They could make it look like captured lightning just like Bert Hickam does. Check that out, capturedlightning.com awesome stuff
That is an amazing piece of work. Expensive, but truly worth it. Well done. And for that, I have subbed and will be checking out more of your vids.
Sold. I gotta make one now. Adding fishing lures.
what a cool idea. I loved the fact that you were so natural and said you didn't know how it was going to turn out.
Very nice table. How much was all of that epoxy?
Side note: I recently became a father and I can't help but think how dangerous that table is with your little ones. Any concern about them tipping it onto themselves (especially since the top isn't attached)? Not calling you a bad dad or anything, was just a thought/concern of mine!
This is heavy enough and with a wide enough footprint that it would take a special effort for even my 9 year old to push over. It's definitely not going over by accident.
Ok. Good. New parent = over thinking/worrying.
Wow! I can't make this, but now I khow how :D
Really cool looking piece. I'd like to see what the legs would look like in a dark mahogany.
Love it! The white concrete looks great, very beachy and natural looking!👍🏻 Great job and a tremendous amount of patience!
When he looks into the camera I feel like he's looking into my soul and I don't think I mind?
Thanks Bob 😂
Adding a few really small shells in the first layer of resin might have made for a cool effect as well. Or maybe just one starfish or sand dollar.
Pretty cool build! I enjoy your videos. They are informative, quick-moving, interesting and entertaining. Keep them coming!
I do a lot of surf board repairs and when I need a perfect finish I wet sand to 12000 grit. You can also hit the top with a spray coat of high gloss deft or similar to make it pop. Also I noticed that you were sanding the concrete and resin at the same time. That will contaminate the sand paper with coarse grit. I hope that helps. I would suggest that you put a water soluble wax finish on the concrete to make it wet looking and give it a dull shine. You can simply use mop and glow and just keep adding coats till it get to where you like it. And the mop and glow will not hard the resin. Great build... Chelsea Wagner Watson.
A very very honorable man who takes way to much time to satisfy others
You're a very thoughtful husband ♥
Nice Work, ✔️Great Tutorial,✔️ Thanks for Posting 💯💯💯💯
I think that the reason it was hard to polish the sides perfectly was because some of the concrete particles (cement) washed off the concrete and as their size is much larger than the abrasive particles in the polishing compound, it scratched the resin.
Yeah, you will introduce a coarser grid (concrete particles) into your sanding. same may happen when sharpening tools or knives on waterstones and you don´t clean up inbetween grits enough. I wonder if it would be feasible to enclose the concrete in about a sixteenth to an eigth of resin anound the sides. Would be a different look for sure, but that might be one way to avoid this problem.
No its annoying to get a perfect finish any time for any project that involves epoxy
All he had to do was seal the whole table with another tight coat of epoxy
The table is fabulous, I like the way there is a lighter layer of "sand" under the concrete "sand" it makes it very realistic. Great job, thanks for sharing.
I Like To Watch Stuff
Szymon Zając lol
check out my channel... support.. thanx.. lol..
lol
I think it's awesome that you made that for your wife. Sweet :) Great video I enjoyed it very much. Only thing (I myself) would've added was some small sea shells on the more shallower side ;) Great job!
I would've added seashells to the top of the legs that you can see in the tabletob part. Maybe even a little starfish. Awesome job though!
I think this looks great. Adding little fish, etc. would make it look like an aquarium. Appropriate art or even shells could simply sit on top as your wife desires. This is amazing.
What a sweet guy that just wanted to do something nice for his wife because he thought she'd like it. Most women have to nag their husbands to do things, so it's nice to know there are some men out there that just want to do something to make their gf's/wives smile 🙂. So I hope I meet a guy as nice as you, or at least a guy that wants to do things to put a smile on my face (without it having to be for an ulterior motive! Lol).
she probably hadnt been giving him any.
So...Jade...you into black guys?
No one Does something for someone without thinking of themselves first.. "I'm Going to do something nice for my wife so she smiles" is really just him thinking about his own well being basically so he doesnt have to listen to her bitch about not having a nice end table. blahblah no one is selfless no on is kind for no reason.
WatchesOnly another reason that you obviously havent considered is he loves his wife because she does not bitch about anything and just provides support to him. And no, people can be kind and loving of their own accord, thats a human trait.
this whole thread just makes both sides men and women look hopeless xD
For polishing epoxy, it's best to use a high cut rubbing compound after sanding then progress to a polishing compound before buffing. Always wet sand into 2-2500 grit with lots of soapy water (Dawn works very well) and remember to use minimal pressure throughout. Too much pressure, especially with the initial dry grits, will really impede your progress later.
When doing your final rubs with compound, using a 7 or 9" high speed tool works best. For light scratches and scuffs, apply Carnauba wax or water based poly to the top. The concrete portion is the easiest as patch can be made from mixing white portland with white sand then apply the paste with a trowel to fill any holes or missing edges.
Well put. Great explanation
+Martin G Provided you could find a store that sells one in the first place, never mind one that you like and can also afford. Just because it _can_ be made doesn't mean that it is. Just because it is doesn't mean you can afford to buy it.
Would have been even cooler with a ship wreck, fishes or plants in it...
truee
@DocH jeez come down hes giving his OPINION
I wouldn't have thought that this would have come out so beautiful. Nice work.
Hey a quick tip for concrete the longer it takes to set the stronger it will be so don't be afraid to add a bit of extra water
Khye Fitness Wrong.
Deppending on the mix, concrete needs an 'x' ammount of water for the reaction to occur (wich is not really that much). Every drop of water that exceds that ammount will evaporate on a few days and leave small holes and paths on the concrete, making it weaker. So, if you put a lot of water on concrete, it'll not be stronger, but exactly the opposite. Super strong concretes use chemicals to reduce the use of water to the max
Man loves his wife, wife loves ocean , so man love ocean, but does ocean love anyone?
no a ocean cant love anything it is not alive or sentient duh
Ocean loves bad swimmers.
When I see the sea once more, will the sea have seen or not seen me?
Ocean love nature
Moana
Omg, that's impressive
Way too impressive! I've come up with my own ideas for expoxy resin artworks! 🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍
If I could have this in a dining room table form, i'd never get rid of it! It's modern and simple. I love it.
Why does everyone that makes stuff like this have beautiful blue eyes?😍❤️
I think it’d look neat with some shells or something in the “water”
Personally, I think it looks fantastic! I like the fact you admitted to the mistakes and walked us through correcting them. Very cool and good job. I subscribed. Thanks for sharing! ✌
Bob try to make a wooden gun (glock 17) that shoots rubber bands
The easiest way to polish resin is with resin. Just a thin layer over the top, heat gun for the bubbles and crystal clear finish
I was going to say that the Orange of the wood makes a great contrast with the blue "water." I wonder what painting the "sand" a Caribbean white would look like shining through the blue "water?" Next time try suspending figures of fish in the "water" and gluing growth to the "sand." I love it!
I rarely watch a video all the way through. I just skip through. You had my 100%. Good job!
My eyes are drawn to that chipped piece..!?
Same
Ditto
As a fellow artist, I find the chipped piece/imperfection of it to look and feel more authentic and I think it would look cheap if it only had perfectly straight edges. At least the epoxy portion is smooth as glass -that’s what counts!
Shhhhh it’s not there.
Yep, same here
i want a big one as a dining table ..
SAME
Make one urself then
only drawback wih that is (1) it would be REALLY heavy, and (2) it would be REALLY expensive,as epoxy AIN'Y cheap...….maybe a thinner epoxy covering over a wooden base...layered plywood with a sand cast on it or something ?? just a thought
I'm with you on this!
put a tiny little man it it, with “concrete shoes”, thrown in the ocean by the mafia
Datygxdy
Great project Bob. My wife wants to retire to the beach someday and we have a bunch of tiny shells we collected from our last vacation. I think I may try something like this for her birthday and add some of the shells on top of the cement before the epoxy. Thanks for doing what you do.
"WOW"
Labor of Love
Beautiful
