  • Acclaimed director Robert Eggers' third feature film takes viewers to 10th-century Europe for a brutally violent and intense revenge drama. With "The Northman," Eggers has received a massive budget boost compared to his first two features, the eerie colonial New England-set "The Witch" and the intimate, surrealist fantasy "The Lighthouse." The Northman might be his most ambitious project yet with an ending that's equal parts "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" and "Troy." Wondering what it all means for our favorite lupine viking and his quest for revenge once the credits begin to roll? This is the ending of "The Northman" explained.

Ever since the Gladiator when it ended with the heaven of pagans scene we have seen lots of movies with magic when it does not make sense. You should have mentioned that after finding out about his mother's betrayal, Amleth escapes the farm with Olga. At that point Amleth intends to forsake his revenge on Fjolnir, but when he realises Olga is pregnant with their twins, he knew that none of them would be safe from Fjolnir as long as he lives. So he leaves Olga and their unborn children to complete his revenge so that they will be safe and won't have to go through the same cycle of revenge as he did.

Could have also pointed out that by the time Amleth and Fjolnir finally clash, both of them have been stripped down to nothing but their hatred for each other. Fjolnir set Amleth on a quest for revenge by taking everything from him at the beginning of the film; over the course of the second and third acts, Amleth does the same to Fjolnir. When they meet at the volcano, their beef with each other is as personal as it can get. They are both literally men with nothing left to lose. This is represented through the fact that both of them are naked in the final fight. They have taken everything from each other. They can’t fathom or comprehend anything else except that one of them must kill the other.
Also, the way the fight starts is perfect. They don’t stare each other down for a few minutes or go into some cliched verbal sparring before the fight; they just start hacking away the moment they meet, roaring in primal, animalistic fury.

    • @louisdemm1758

Actually Amleth is fighting for his unborn children while Fjolnir has nothing. They basically switch roles.

    • @MrPjw5
      @MrPjw5 2 роки тому +6

@@louisdemm1758 See, I don’t entirely buy that. Nor do I buy Amleth’s belief that Fjolnir would have chased him to the ends of the Earth to kill him and his family. At that point in the movie, Fjolnir had no idea where Amleth was or where he was going. He also knew that Amleth was not someone to be screwing around with; makes sense because Amleth slaughtered a bunch of his subjects through both brute strength and cunning. I think messing with Amleth was the last thing on Fjolnir’s mind at that point. However, the reverse was true for Amleth; he wanted to keep whittling away at Fjolnir until he had nothing, much like Fjolnir had taken everything away from Amleth.
I see it more as Amleth is so obsessed with obtaining revenge that he throws away everything good that has happened to him, using the flimsy notion that Olga might be carrying his children as justification to go through with it. It makes The Northman a stronger, more tragic movie if you interpret it that way.

Was she saying thank you for killing her before her son so she didn't have to watch him die or to keep Amleths attention on her so the son could attack??? Honestly though I'm not surprised with how the movie turns out with Odin as the main god.

    • @reffer5770

Amleth said on the boat, that his destiny is to choose between his revenge and his family. He says he chooses both. That means to me that his woman and unborn child is his only family now (not his mother and halfsiblings, thats why he then chooses to kill both, instead of sparing them as he did before he knew about his unborn children. So he basicly gives the prophecy a new meaning/interpretation) and by having his revenge, he also protects them from Fjolnir.
And I think Fjolnir definitly had to go after him, because of his dead first born.
So in the end he got both, he fulfilled his oath AND chose his family, just not his first family.
But you could also say that Amleth got it wrong and he indeed had the choice to choose life and his family without having revenge, because his death in the climax was destined. That would mean that the prophecy indeed meant his unborn children and not his mother etc.
I think this is done on purpose to leave it to the audience how they want to interpret the ending.

Actually, the plot twist still justifies Amleth's quest for vengeance. His mother was a demonically evil, power hungry traitor to his father, and his father was indeed guilty of taking his mother originally as a slave and forcing himself upon her, but he tried to right his wrong by taking care of her, marrying her and making her a queen. Fjolnir's vanity, envy, covetousness, self-righteousness, unbridled lust, greed and spite made both him and gundur rotten and unnatural people who richly deserved death at the hand of Amleth, who in the process of avenging the foul murder of his father also secured a good future for his woman (Anna the slave) and his two unborn children.
Amleth walked a path of doom and pain, but saw it thru.

dude... this movie was intense af. i think more than any other movie i've ever watched, this made me viscerally feel how brutal, savage, alien and fatalistic the dark ages norse world was. i thought it was a really good choice to constantly weave in trippy semi-supernatural elements because the audience can't help but get immersed in the sort of superstitious mindset people of that time had. i mean, if you really think about it, you could explain away pretty much everything (except maybe Olga's wind-calling spell on the ship) as a combination of mind-altering substances and the mind seeing what it wants/expects to see. but you're not sure it wasn't really supernatural, just like the people of the time tended to explain everything through supernatural terms.

We can only wish Robert Eggers every possible success in his future film-making activities. I would recommend him to further cooperate with Sjón, if he decides to make another movie about Viking Age or pre-Christian Scandinavia. Icelanders still speak the Viking-era language and they are still kinda Viking-minded - the spirit of the pre-Christian Scandinavian and generally Germanic world is preserved in Iceland almost entirely intact. Filmmakers should capitalize on this, if they want to create historically accurate and authentic masterpieces like The Northman.

I enjoyed the movie for what it was (a violent, semi-historical mythologically infused revenge story). I think in particular the middle part of the movie was very strong - cool battle scenes, spooky mystical shenanigans, fighting a whole undead monster to obtain an ancient blade. I loved all of that. The actors did great jobs at bringing their characters to life and they were all well cast for their roles. I feel like the beginning and ending acts lose that momentum, but I'm not mad at it. I do feel kind of confused why they set up Amleth's daughter as being the one to succeed him and then never expanding on that...but I guess it's meant to just give him some closure before he dies? Not sure. Would have been cool to see her story :) A father who is a viking king and a sorceress mother...she would be so powerful. I also want to give a shout out to the director of the film for not depicting graphic sexual violence. It is refreshing to not have that paraded around in a movie set in this sort of background. Everything was implied and still made an impact, without having to actually see anything. Good direction! If I had one overall criticism, I would say that the accents were in no way consistent (except maybe Anya's?) and it was sort of weird LOL. But it wasn't that bad

He raided the village and killed those people because he's a Viking. Going on vik, going viking was a verb and encompassed everything from raiding to trading, slaving and berserking. Welcome to the Dark Ages.
Yes, his mom ordered her son killed.
Nicole is a MILF, c'mon. Seriously, I think Eggers did a great job of evoking a a dark, chaotic, pre-christian culture. It's always fashionable to bad rap Christianity, but its eventual adoption by the Vikings did tone them down a bit, along with the rest of the barbarian cultures of northern Europe.
