Discussing Indigeneity At Berkeley

  • At Berkeley University a conversation on indigeneity was sparked in the middle of campus when a Polynesian American student approached a table discussing Jewish identity and liberation.
The student was respectful and willing to listen, which unfortunately is rare to find in times with such political divide. The student also did not harbor many of the anti-Semitic tropes that are commonly found amongst those who have not been exposed to facts such as Jews being the indigenous pre-colonial collective that originate from the land of Judea/Israel.
That being said, he did unintentionally hold double standards against the Jewish people, which is one of the ways that anti-Semitism is expressed. In other words, if one believes in native rights and the liberation/self-determination of indigenous populations and supports all indigenous collectives, but holds a different standard when it comes to the Jewish people, that is a form of holding double standards specifically against Jews and thus an anti-Semitic position.
Throughout the conversation the student clearly showed that indigenous rights for such populations were extremely important and in line with his core values, especially being native Hawaiian and a supporter of the liberation movements there. However, when discussing Jewish indigeneity, he shifted the conversation to questioning the legitimacy of "borders" or bringing up the current conflict.
His comments and conclusions were not malicious nor were they intended to offend, but that doesn't mean that they weren’t also xenophobic in nature. Imagine if someone was speaking to Native American Nations, to Tibetans, or to Polynesians about identity, land rights and self-determination, and in response to that were countered with talks of borders or current ethnic conflict in these lands. This would clearly be at best insensitive and at worst an attempt to use struggle out of context in order to delegitimize an indigenous groups identity, struggles, and needs.
The conversations on borders or ethnic conflict are ones that need their own space, and should never be conflated or used to minimize conversations on one group’s identity and indigenous rights.
It is not the student’s fault to have responded the way that he did. It is the fault of pop-culture not grasping the concept of Jewish identity, liberation, and indigenous rights. It is the responsibility of the group in question to narrate their own story in order for the pop-culture of a society to evolve and for the population to then differentiate what is right and with what is wrong.
This video was made in collaboration with the Berkeley Tikvah student group.

As A Hawaiian/Polynesian. I can definitely identify and see the parallels with the Jewish people and their struggle to maintain their identity amidst all the anti Israel and Anti Semitism that's propogated. All the best to the Jewish people. The fact that you were able to re establish a state in your own ancestral homeland is a miracle. Mazel Tov

Just a side note, when talking about conversion to Judaism people might get the wrong impression because when they hear conversion they tend to think of how it works with Islam or Christianity for instance, but converting to Judaism is a process that requires you to prove that it's something that awakened deep within your soul and for that reason it's a tough, long, and discouraging process that only those who truly, truly want to complete will end up doing so.
People who hear this knowing the struggle in converting to Judaism will have a *very* different notion of converts than those who think it's like missionary religions

@@SebaX92 I think he thinks of it like every person has a right to exist in their homeland but having a western-type established line and borders is against his mindset and culture. Just think about how much different the conflict would be if borders were not a thing. There would be no walls or checkpoints or separation. We’d be forced to have to live together in some sort of harmony.

I feel for both sides but at the same time I don’t like how many of Israeli Jews (not all) treat Palestinian Arabs who have much less power. I also don’t like what Hamas has done as well. So I hope to see the day when people from both sides don’t have to distrust or be scared of each other. I’m amazed by the country tbh. I'm sick and tired of this trans socialist or w/e the hack they are, manipulating the narrative focusing only on flaws of the West to undermine its entirety. Dishonest, provocative and misleading narratives bring no progress.
I'm not western, but I absolutely admire what the best in the West has given the world.

Why is he so confident in his statement? Let’s say there have been 68 generations since the expulsion of the Judaeans circa 300 AD (sorry, not sure what date this event took place). @@truthtopower48 uh no, look, Israel's occupation of the West bank is illegal and wrong because Palestinians are living as secons class citizens with their rights violated. Israel also launching rockets into Gaza is wrong because the majority of Palestiniansin Gaza are children. The Israelis have alot of responsibility to the Palestinians for the horrible things that the government does to them as a people. I think we could both agree on that. But Jews as an ethnic group do come from Judea and the went into Europe. Obviously Middle Eastern Jews mixed with white people but they still have a right to statehood in the Levant. I personally support giving the entire West Bank to Palestinians because Palestinians have the right to self determination in their own land. But I want to ask you something off topic. Do you consider Jews whether they are European, Ethiopian, Iraqi, Afgani, or even Chinese to still be Middle Eastern? Because white chtistian people have always considered Jews to be from the Middle East even if those Jews looked white.
