Even a veteran 65 yr old grower can learn something new! I already use the double cup to start my bigger crop seedlings and knew that i had. Lots of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash and melons in cups in my garden that were left unplanted (because of covid), still in their cups and started bearing fruit! I'm going to try the lettuce and some other things in my greenhouse this winter. God bless
How long did it take your radishes to start rooting? I want to do a lesson with my class in clear cups so they can see the roots. I want them to eat what we grow.
@@connitahill7478 Suggestion: Roots don’t like the light, use clear cup - Put that clear cup INSIDE a solid color cup. Roots stay protected from light , you can see them every time you water.

My wife is going to love you from seeing this video. She buys lettuce because I don't grow it in my garden. She has a indoor rabbit and she goes through so much lettuce. Thank great idea and great video!!!! As far as your question at the end I have been using the 8 oz clear plastic cups for 3 years now for my starters and done the same thing as you with cutting slits with scissors. However i learned something new today watching your video. The dbl cup idea Why didn't i think of that TY ....
Wow you answered a question for me I was trying this started growing in early Feb. I was only putting one plant per cup they grew but were wimpy. I have like 20 cups, and I was like this does not look like all the videos I have seen so I combined them now I have half the cups and triple the lettuce. Thanks!
I’m so glad I found this. I have a salad bowl that I meant to thin but waited too long so it’s crowded. Im going to treat it like this solo cup and harvest some baby greens. Thanks a lot.
You can actually grow the zucchini, cucumbers, corn and tomatoes and harvest fruit in cups or just the starts to plant in the garden? Cucumbers, squash and tomatoes are all mighty big plants. Will they bear fruit?
That’s awesome, thank you. I will do the Solo cup method. Now I know to double cup fashion. I have purchased all varieties of lettuce so I’m ready. Again, thanks.
I just started this with coriander. I have small seedlings growing now. Just a point to note i also packed the cup with loads of soil but found that the seedling pushed the soil out from the cup. Looking forward to seeing how much yield i get
I just subscribed to your channel. Thank you so much for the easy to follow instructions. Great videos. I just bought lettuce and kale seeds, and i am so glad I found this video.
I start all my seeds in the red cups or styrofoam cups before transplanting but I never thought of growing lettuce this way. Brilliant!!! Do you put the cups near a window or grow light or outside?? Great video
Thank you for the clear instruction. It’s great that u showed the sowing and the harvesting. Our city is in lockdown, wait till we can go out will buy the seeds and try. It will be helpful to have homegrown veggies without going out. Thank you ❤️🙏
I’ve grown the devil’s lettuce in a red solo cup once😂😂😂😂 but seriously, I love this idea. I got a shelf in my kitchen that I want to use and this method is perfect for my needs
Thanks a lot for sharing your method in using red Solo cups to grow lettuce. I just purchased seeds today and already have my Solo cups left over from some time ago and will be using them to grow lettuce! I've had plants before but this will be my first time ever growing food to eat. I'm so excited about it!
you should leave the middle so there is leaves to receive photosynthesis going to try this soon its expensive online fotr those cups in uk i might use small pots cheaper
Where do you put them for sun exposure? I am wondering how to calculate this so you could have one harvest every night. Maybe just plant one every night and see what happens. In four to five weeks you will have an ongoing salad bar. It would be interesting to see how long regrowing would take.
You don't necessarily need to cut it all at once like he did, especially if your salad it more then just a bowl of lettuce lol, I am still experimenting with this myself, but I expect if someone has 2-3 cups and they take 2-3 leafs from each one each day or two, you would maybe need to plant new ones each week or two to keep this cycle going depending on how much lettuce a person eats in a day, if that's all you eat you might need 2-3 cups/ day lol
You're a new discovery for me. Liked the video and have subscribed. Where did you store the lettuce whilst germinating and growing? Indoors somewhere I presume. I also like the idea of doing a few solo cups per time for continual harvest.
@@nnoble92 Thanks! What temperature did you keep them throughout the grow cycle? I'm reading below 70 F is optimal for tango and wondering if I can get away with something closer to 76. I'm just growing them under some T5s, and short of dropping the AC in the house to the 60's, I'm not sure how to realistically reduce the temperatures for germination. Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks for your video. What do you do with your soil after the 4th or 5th grow? Can you remove the lettuce and reuse the soil for the next batch of seeds?
How long before the next harvest? I'd like to try planting a solo cup every day or two so that I can have a perpetual salad supply, harvesting daily or every other day! So how many cups would I need to take me to the next harvest of that first cup?
It would be tough I think. I’ve never tried it myself but I know chamomile usually requires close to a 12 inch wide container. You could probably grow it and keep it pretty small but it wouldn’t get to its full size.
I grow all my peppers and tomatoes in the double cup. Never tried lettuce. Gonna try that tomorrow. Started some lettuce seed in small canvas bags a few weeks ago. All died. I’ll try cups. May have better luck.
What type of lettuce is this? (The green leaf you showed that’s mature) Looks like black seeded Simpson? What’s the best type to plant in solo cups? I’m full time in an RV and I’ve got an indoor garden going with lights and I can move them outdoors it’s just way too hot right now. Awesome video by the way thank you!
Tho most I’ve gotten is 5, I usually either 4 or 5 cuts. It will actually keep growing the issue you run into is that the lettuce will eventually get bitter on the 4th 5th or 6th cut
One plant won’t result in nearly as much lettuce . I’ve experimented with one plant versus multiple in this set up and you get more than double the lettuce from planting high intensity like this than you do with just one plant.
@@allthingsreal you're limited by the size a single plant can grow in relation to the time it takes. If you fit 5 plants in there and they're never starving for nutrients or sunlight they'll grow at the same speed regardless if they're in one cup or spread over 5. By putting all 5 in one cup you can then fit 25 plants in 5 cups instead of only 5 plants.
Please explain to me the reason for using the "Red" solo cup? I like the color blue better, so would it be okay if I used a blue cup or is red the only color that will make it grow? Let me know!!!
The red isn’t necessary. Just what I had laying around and they weren’t going to get used for anything else so we decided to get some use out of them. 👍

I’ve found the two biggest things with lettuce are loose soil and feeding. If I ensure those two things it pretty much grows for me wherever I put it.
How long does it take to grow?
Depending on the variety anywhere from 35 to 50 days
Doesn't not thinning them out make small leaves?
I am looking for ways to use up my daily kitty food cans. I'm wondering if this will work kind of the same
i use pot noodle pots , so far its going great

Hi, what about sun light? Can we just place it indoor?
It will need a lot of sun if it’s inside
Does it have to be a colored cup? I have several clear ones that I was thinking about using.
Clear works great too! I’ve used both before, haven’t seen any noticeable differences
I see you mix your own soil mix now. Are you using that instead of the seed starting mix?
So you get like 4 or 5 cuts? Could you keep going if you fertilize again or is it because the roots are too dense at that point?
Tho most I’ve gotten is 5, I usually either 4 or 5 cuts. It will actually keep growing the issue you run into is that the lettuce will eventually get bitter on the 4th 5th or 6th cut
Is that just something that happens with lettuce?
xSKOOBSx sadly yes, too bad you can’t just cut from it forever lol
Can you do the same with spinach?
could you let it grow tall to come to seed and save the seeds to re grow?
of course you could
is it hydroponic? do u use nutrient water?
how about the light?
What the instructions for sunlight indoors?
Still, why so many seeds? Can one seed work?
