Love the baseboard, almost crying out to use the boxes as some sort of drawer storage for stock and removable scenic items.

This is brilliant was looking at a pocket line pack from Japan as my first N gauge layout. This has provided some good ideas thanks for sharing.
I use Kato track myself in N gauge and I love it! I built a nice small layout that I can run most trains on. I love the Kato models. I would recommend getting a GE P42DC as its a lovely model.
Thanks for posting this. I’m a longtime Kato Unitrack user and always telling people that it’s bulletproof and so easy to work with. I would have never known about the Pocket Train if not for your video. Just an FYI I found one available and as of Dec 13th 2021 it’s $89 USD.
my other micro layout uses an even tighter kato curve 4.5 inches,i have a pocket line kato tram running round it,excellent equipment at a very reasonable price,best wishes.jpj

This inspired me to return to N gauge! The cardboard box idea is brilliant. I have purchased 10 12x12 inch pizza boxes on eBay so I can do a 3x4 foot baseboard (with a 2' x 1' space in the middle). Thanks for the inspiration.

This is pretty much exactly how I got back into the hobby after ~20 years since my last layout
I think this would make the basis of a very nice Christmas/winter themed layout. I'm looking to do something similar myself, and I had that very same station building when I first started out in N gage over 40 years ago.

IMHO, Kato N gauge track is the best in the scale. I have a small 4ft x 2ft layout and I can put it together quickly. All the track and scenery is modular and can be stored in a couple of boxes. Kato is not very cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for. I had the track stored away for several years (I keep it in the original packaging) but when I put it together again, with a small amount of cleaning the whole thing was up and running in no time.
When I was in Japan with my wife I decided to build an N gauge layout.....I bought the exact same loco and a starter set. After watching this first vid I now have some great ideas based on your build! Thank you for sharing!!

Watching with interest. The baseboard idea is outstanding. Can't go wrong with Kato track, I'm building a layout with some that's on its 4th use and it still performs flawlessly.
I’m using Kato track on my 2’ by 3’ layout. I’m really liking it. Easy to put together and glue down, and runs great.

I've taken lots of tips from you, thanks. I have an n gauge shunting layout in a box file, and another on a laminate flooring offcut. Both work brilliantly - but haven't got around to the scenery yet. Did have plans for a variety of box-file layouts that can be connected in different combinations, but decided to develop my 6' x 3' family-friendly layout instead.
You can always pick up second hand Kato track, buildings and rolling stock on Ebay and it's really easy to use. The only problem I have is that with some of the older type of track I find that the joiners can come off too easily, which can be a bit of a pain but worth putting up with for the savings. Oh yeah, that foam board is brilliant and a bargain at 10 pounds for 4 A1 pieces. It also has a lot of uses because if you want to properly ballast a Kato layout and want to save money on their rather expensive ballast you can fit the foam card alongside the track to lessen the space needed to ballast and also if you remove the top layer of card to expose the foam it looks like ballast itself when painted or even rock or uneven ground. Its easy enough to remove with a sharp model knife if the pieces aren't too wide. I just wish this damn lockdown was over because I need to buy some more!

I love it. Back in January, Walthers in the US was selling Tomytec track similar to the Kato for between $1.50 - $3.00 ( USD ) per pack of 4. Now I know what to do with one of the ovals I bought. Looking forward to the next video.

I like the Kato N gauge track, I've made a 6'x3' layout with it.
Amazing what you can fit into that size with N gauge. I run 8 car bullet trains on a layout only a couple of inches bigger without them chasing their tails!
I've just subscribed to your channel and I just love some of the brilliant ideas that you come up with. The little grey cells have gone into overdrive and you have certainly given me food for thought on future projects especially when you can find some great bargains in some unlikely places. Nice to see you guys tackling an N gauge layout. I absolutely love Kato stuff, I use Unitrack on pretty much all my layouts now. For what it costs grab a bag of loose Kato ballast which is the same colour as the moulded trackbed, you can then glue it up to the edges of the plastic road bed to 'feather' the edges out a little. It makes it look irregular and therefore much more realistic. I've used this technique a few times to good effect. I liked North-End sidings idea of a split scene, I did that on my 'Time Shift' layout it adds an interesting dimension to a basic oval. Looking forward to your progress on this one.

A quick way to feather the track is to use double sided tape on the sides and just lie it in the ballast. It's useful if you plan on selling up at a later date because you can just peel the tape off and get the track back to it's original condition.

Depends what you are doing. For watching trains run definitely, but if you want a lot of points they are very expensive. Equally if you don't like ballasting it saves a lot of time , trouble and expense

Cracking idea. I am planning something similar in 009 on that 2" thick insulating foam board. I have a load of Fleischman track, which is similar to the Kato, and I couldn't agree more. Ballasting in N gauge is tedious! ;-)

I also have a bit of N scale track that we found in our attic when we moved into our house 6 years ago. its not really enough to create a layout like this as there only was one curve in the bag but my plan is as follows: take the box of the hornby 0-4-0 I bought a few years ago and build two shunting layouts that clip together inside it.

Funny that you're building a micro N Gauge layout, have recently finished one myself built on top of a Noticeboard, only 16x12 inches big but also uses Kato Unitrack (4.5in radius plus two straights), managed to fit in the BMR controller onto the board so all you need to do is plug it in, put some stock on the layout and away you go!

It is not so generic loco & train, although I don't know how close it is to the real one that was and may be still running in Matsuyama Japan. 20 years ago when I caught it, they had the loco & 2 carriages running during the day between the station and what was said to be Japan's oldest existing public bath-house. Unfortunately the engine no longer was in steam, and the set somehow got its power off the tramline [over head from the carriage?], which is in a way, how the Kato model works.

I Run Bachman don’t have problems have a 4x8 on the first one second Board is Bigger our em together it is huge and I love it and Proud of My N Scale won’t change it for Anything.

I thought that, but its OK as long as I don't have to scratch build buildings or shunt, its fine just watching trains go by. Anything else and it will have to be OO or G ! Lol
Japanese N gauge models are usualy fantastic, reliable, smooth, quiet runners.
I have the N gauge Thomas, Percy models and they have been no problem no 2 years now.
Do you have the Tomix or Bachmann version of those engines?
@@cruikshank I had the tomix versions. They're a little larger than the new bachmann models. They ran great and were easy to service.
When I was doing N scale, Kato Unitrack was the best choice for me : easy to find in Europe (Hattons, Gaugemaster and Topslotsntrains have a permanent stock), straightforward geometry, and miles ahead of the offer in terms of ease of use, functionnality and possibilities. Far beyond what Fleischmann Piccolo track does, for instance. I'm looking at their version in HO/OO now, I need rigid pieces of track easy to fit for my modular layouts to be able to put the apart easily, my N scale experience told me Kato Unitrack is the best choice for it

I like the lengths of Kato track, multiples of 248mm is easy to work out without a calculator unlike the 280mm that Tomix use.

It has two wires which you can use a connector block on, so very similar

We always use our own design of PWM controller. The Gauge master ones are very good, ours are much cheaper
Quick question, you mentioned the foam baseboard how thick is that? And what are the benefits of using it?
The foam is about 6mm thick, its standard hobby craft stuff. Its cheap light and rigid, most importantly I had it lying around as no shops were open!

Only one, you don't need power on each side of a loop?

@@Games20210 there are two short straights s64 and one s62f one side and two s64 and one s62 the other to balance the feeder
You can also buy power feeders that replace the track joiners and can be used on any size Kato track.

What controller do you use with the N gauge? The Kato doesn't seem to offer variable speed.
We use our own PWM controller

Great channel with great videos. I want to build a small N Guage model railway, but like many of your viewers, I have very limited space and time and I am on a limited budget. I love steam railway. Any advice you can offer, would be very much appreciated

Very hard to do N on a budget. Kestrel buildings are cheap, Peco wagon kits are very cheap. Coaches are pricey, locomotives are madness even second hand.
Just a thought, but rather than doing a bridge in the back corner, what about a level crossing? That way you could experiment with some different techniques.

Just to be clear: I'm not at all complaining. My budget for a layout is definitely higher than yours, even compared with this one.
Its all relative, this is the cheapest way of doing N, so keeps within the budget theme, especially as the baseboard and buildings will only cost next to nothing

We shopped around, traintrax were cheapest 26.65 Inc postage. For some reason the 7in curves are a couple of quid cheaper than the 6in.
It does pay to shop around but Train Trax and TopSlotsAndTrains seem to be the cheapest, the only differences being stock availability. One piece of advice though, don't buy from Train Trax using Ebay because it is a lot more expensive and even Keith Blanchard himself told me that's because of Ebay's seller fees and he prefers to sell through his own website.

is N gauge larger or smaller than 00/H0?
Smaller, nominally half the size so approx 2mm to a foot instead of 4mm

It seems to be. I gave up N originally because of the cost, its only the 3d printer that makes it cheap enough for me to consider it again.
looking good am looking forward to seeing how you get on with it i bought a fleischmann train second hand last year that has similar track to the kato, am just gradually buying bits and pieces to start a european layout, and i like the foamboard i built my last little n gauge layout using left over timber and foamboard from hobby craft i really like the idea of just cutting it with a stanley knife rather than having to use circular saws or jigsaws like if i was using plywood, this is a link to the layout i done if you fancy taking a look, keep up the good work and take care, Tom ua-cam.com/video/xDJJIIRWAXk/v-deo.html
I actually find it's easier to cut the foam board with a junior hacksaw blade if you are cutting large pieces and then sanding the edges down which is easy to do!
I love the idea of this layout but personally I think the station building is too big, if you like it then that's fine. It's your layout 🤣
