I often think when I'm watching you march up the beach and we are a fair distance away from you, if you ever lose the camera or what the footage looks like, with you scuttling back to pick up the camera. Those are some spectacular vertebra you found! Can't imagine finding something like that on the beach! Much be a partial skeleton, no? And, yes, even though the biggest pieces can't be hauled off of the beach in one piece (not even with your cart), it might be still be worth trying to get it off in multiple pieces - that is, if you think the vertebrae will hold. Otherwise they'll be just lost to the sea, and that seems like a real shame... :(
    Also, this sodium hexaphosphate seems an interesting chemical. Does it only work on clay, or do you think it'll also manage to break up uncompacted clay-y sandstone? If got an Eocene deposit I normally get the fossils out of by breaking the soil up by hand, which occasionally risks fracturing the fossils within. Sodium hexaphosphate seems like a way less destructive approach that I might give a try once.

    • @MamlamboFossils
      @MamlamboFossils  4 роки тому +1

      I think it can be used to break up anything with a weak bond, like the siltstone. I haven't tried it on a sandstone yet, I see no reason it won't as it should just be the particle size that is different? If there were any diagnostic bones in that bunch of vertebraes, I would have tried to get them off the beach. Maybe like some skull elements :) I'm rather limited by space at my house so have to be choosy with what I keep.
      Let me know how that sandstone reacts to the Sodium HMP!

      @alexandermelchers1497 4 роки тому

    Is there enough of a difference in density to use gravity separation methods like panning for situations like the teeth in siltstone?

    • @MamlamboFossils
      @MamlamboFossils  2 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure if that will work, I might try it one day!

    • @alaspooryorick9946
      @alaspooryorick9946 2 роки тому

      @@MamlamboFossils I thought about it for another couple of minutes and realised that it will depend entirely on what the mineralisation is. The specific gravity of pyrites or iron oxides are definitely high enough to be pannable, but I don't know enough about fossils to know if that'd be true for other kinds :)

    Its never occurred to me to use pantyhose to filter sediment. I don't want to think about what Ive washed down the sink over the years. Immediate response was to ask my wife to get me some from town . Thats a conversation I wish we hadn't had !

      “Oh no...”
