Jill Bearup is at it again! This time lying about her anti-trans beliefs whilst defending them vicariously through J.K. Rowling before going on to support the author's racist and misogynistic attacks upon Olympic gold medallist Imane Khelif.
I didn't know I didn't want it, but much love. Please take your own advice. Looking to make a better world in the new year. Watch out for the bug - it's not much fun. Much love.
Thank you. It’s a little disheartening to realize that a creator that I admired is a hateful bigot, but the information needs to be available so that we can choose to not support hatred.
yeah i hadnt watched her stuff in a while but i do remember enjoying it, and not realizing that she was a bigot, explains why after i got sicckc of shadeversity i ended up on her channel
I remember coming across her stuff a few years back about Princess Bride and fighting in dresses, then I got recommended Shadiversity for the first time on his video about cod pieces. It wasn't until months later that I realised Shadiversity is one of those weird 40 year olds who complains about teenage girls showing too much shoulder but whines and moans when a video game character doesn't have constantly visible cleavage, and now I'm really not shocked he got recommended to me based on Jill's videos. Like it must be hard work being so transphobic that youtube compares your misogyny to literal gamergate youtubers, I could never.
I went the other way, from Shad's videos on Star Wars, to her videos on Star Wars... when she praised the fight scene in Episode VIII, I knew she wasn't a person I wanted to watch. Sure, a fight needs to tell a story... but was it too much to ask for it to be done competently too? And the fight also needs to make sense within the broader context of the story... which is why that throne scene failed. The writers were just mixing popular scenes from Star Wars in as part of his attempt to deconstruct Star Wars. :/ I abandoned Shad when his social views were no longer being kept hidden. I even bought his novel... (spoilers, it's a piece of trash worse than any movies Shad calls garbage).
I'm sickened that I have only now found this out, after watching her for over a year. I seldom read comments, so I had not seen these. Thank you for covering this.
I probably would have bought her book if I had not happened on this video. I'm not normally one for following people on social media, so I had no idea as to Ms Bearup's character.
Well, shit. Me too, I thought it was really cool to have a fem talking about weapons and armor. Oh well, I guess the shittyness of people can't be accounted for. Def unsubbed from her, sick this is nonsense all the time.
@jamesboyle6134 i liked her informative content and her basis and was gonna buy her book too. Never expected this tho. Thanks I've now unsubsidized from her (wish we could block creaters from recommended lists) and removing her book from my wishlist.
When my son was referred to GIDS it was a 3yr wait for a consultation. He was nearly 18 by the time he had completed his assessments. They referred him on to adult GIC where he had another 8m wait for an appointment. Then 6m waiting for an Endo appt. Finally started T at the age of 19 having first been referred at 14. Most trans teens were already missing out on blockers due to a lack of services. It was only the knowledge that eventually he would be able to transition that kept him alive. And it was a *very* close thing. He finally got his surgery 6m ago. These people are liars. Gender affirning surgery has a lower regret rate than HP tattoos.
That's an interesting point, I never thought of it from that perspective. Since trans people aren't inherently disabled, I didn't think to apply that lens.
@FrozEnbyWolf150-b9t This is true, but I feel the need to stress this with regards to intersex people as they're often ignored/left out of this discussion.
Eugenics never went away. It survived underground until the right republicans brought it into the light. It rebranded and slapped on a veneer of scientific legitimacy through junk science.
the scene in trigun where vash shoots knives in the leg, in self defense, and knives says "how could you shoot me, your own brother?" is a perfect example of this strange fragility in fascist psychology. they try to kill us, and when we defend our lives, they scream and ask (genuinely, which is the horrific part) how we could hurt them. in the words of david michôd, "they block out the one thing they must know. but they must know it."
That's something sort of wished I'd mentioned when Bearup (in her 2024 post) talks about not being able to afford security, thus she hides her bigotry. When I first read that I was sat there, thinking to myself, 'it must be nice to be able to tap out of politics and not have your rights stripped away almost immediately'. Because, she can do that (at least with regards to trans access to bathrooms), whereas we, the trans community, don't have that option. I was forced to come out in the secular community during the peak of the GamerGate movement for my own survival. She can shut up and stop being a bigot at any moment, I can't turn off being trans.
@@EssenceOfThoughtIf her real thoughts would get her mobbed by people who find her views disgusting and hateful maybe her views are the issue and not her having to hide them
He was so offended in the original dub, too, lmao. "DID YOU JUST SHOOT ME IN THE LEG?" my brother in transdimentional space plants, you started the fight
If I had a nickel for every time I stopped watching a medieval weapons nerd before they went way off with radical right wing opinions I'd have two nickels... Which isn't a lot but I'm sad it happened twice.
chances are they already had those beliefs LONG before coming forward with them which is even sadder, like these people are becoming actively more and more bold with their horrid "opinions" as time goes on, the world is literally heading backwards as we speak and it's not only an issue in the US and the UK, it's just as bad in the rest of Europe if not worse (I'm in central europe and I imagine it gets worse the further east/south you go)
@@hatchetfieldharpie3276 There are a few that are most definitely strong allies or queer themselves, the best I can think off off the top of my head is SellswordArts. He actively encourages learning about swords and medieval weapon martial arts, keeps politics out of his channel as much as possible, but is actively encouraging of queer people (all people who don't hold bigoted or racist views really) learning and being included in the space. Plus, he's repeatedly butted heads with the bigoted people, which he's handled fantastically and is a huge plus in my eyes. He's a strong, positive ally in the space and I highly recommend his content, unlike say Shadiversity, SellswordArts is focused on historical accuracy and teaching proper technique, not spinning nonsense opinion.
That's really annoying considering I did like their clothing stuff. The hyperbolic claiming that if jk is transphobic then everyone else is transphobic is so hyperbolic and dishonest of her.
Basically Jkr less then a year or so ago: "Queer people where not harmed by nazis, so stop complaning about things like basic human rights". Jill and people like her: "Oh jkr said nothing wrong stop overacting to that old article from 2020. It's just that one thing." Hmm yep totally nothing facist here.
JK is transphobic to the point that Elon Musk had to tell her to tone it down. Musk! Rowling is not a valid measuring stick for the everyperson. If Jill thinks JK has valid points, she's really far down the rabbit hole.
I was half into her stuff, when I found out about her teansphobia. I'm just super grateful for the HEMA community that I'm a part of that they didn't condone her actions. It's a femme space, but knowing our cisters have our backs is just wonderful
Yeah, that's a common experience. She's taken to hiding it really well the last few years, but she still kicks out at trans and intersex people (or those she perceives as such) when she thinks nobody is watching. Thankfully the LGBT+ members of her audience have the sense to reach out and report such terrible behaviour. Just trying to make as many of them aware as possible.
Don't feel bad about that. My own spouse was a huge fan for years until I told them what she was like when talking about anything but swords. 💚 You know now, and that matters!
I have a bunch of HEMA friends (some recently departed), so I'll be aware now if this particular biggot comes up or is recommended. Glad you are in a supportive space!
Autistic afab non-binary person here, and I loved Jill Bearup and was subscribed to her channel. I almost brought her book! It's a shame that she holds these views, she has lost my subscription. I'm really disappointed.
I noticed some weirdness in her polls semi-recently. She had polls that were split into men and women, and people in the comments were often having to do write in comments to vote. Usually that’d have a creator just go “oh right, I should add that option” or at least just say something like “not enough options on poll”, but she was like weirdly ignoring a lot of highly voted comments where people had to do write ins. I was like “uh, oh. Hope that’s nothing…”
I used to watch Jill Bearup's content until I learned about her transmisia. I do consider it delightfully ironic that she introduced me to writer Seanan McGuire who supports trans rights and has trans representation in her novels.
I love Seanan McGuire and Seanan McGuire is a really really really talented writer which, as someone who unknowingly bought and read Bearup's book, Bearup is...not. Even before I found out she was spreading transmisia the best I could say about it was that the concept is cute and the writing wasn't so bad I couldn't finish. Wish it had been. blech.
1:09:48 That is the ultimate hypocrisy indeed. And you're absolutely right, her audience doesn't know and they should know. It's not about political opinions, it's about being a decent person or being a bigot spreading lies and hatred.
As AMAB trans Fem, who is 40+ and who attended boarding school - yeah, I was abused. I was always marked and my peers and 'mentors' knew it. Apparently I'm now a threat to women, just by dint of my anatomy. Living with lifelong trauma, but apparently I'm a monster because of it. Much love to my AFAB, NB and all my queer siblings! Stay strong! I love you!
@@EssenceOfThought No problem. In fact I think I should subscribe to your channel. I've watched a few of your videos thanks to recommendations in a discord channel I'm part of and they were all good.
I should stop being surprised at the mask off moments but somehow I still am. Since I dropped Bearup from my radar and internet feeds I haven't heard anything of her so I still had this image of somewhat sensible person who just decided to be willfully ignorant on some topics due to stubborness or whatever reason, and I thought she might come around in a few years. But it seems she's gone completely reality-critical.
SellswordArts is another good one. Very queer positive and focuses on education and proper technique, as well as some for fun silly skits. He's butted heads with the transphobes repeatedly too, and actively defends queer people, even while trying to keep the perception of politics out of his content.
Thanks for the heads up sis. I (trans guy) used to watch her stuff because I like combat sillyness but oh lord these types really pop up from the most unexpected places
I stopped at the 40 minute mark. Took a quick break to do some surface level fact checking and unsubscribe from Jill with one final comment. Trans guy here and I'm so tired of this. Like I have to research every content creator, author, public figure before I'm free to like them. Because I _cannot_ in good conscience support a transphobe, even just with views. But why? Why this fixation and hate on a tiny minority group? I don't demand allyship or even empathy. Tolerance. Silent tolerance is literally my standard. And yet somehow that is too high a bar. I'm sorry I didn't finish the video. I just get to a point where further info gets painful.
I don't think he was being malicious, I just feel he got lazy when he was warned, and then felt like he was being unfairly criticised for it. Still wish he'd done better, but, to human is to err. Even Bearup likely could have come back if she'd come back a few years later with a genuine apology unpacking her harmful narratives, but instead she chose to double down.
@@EssenceOfThought oh absolutely. It's also why Im so disappointed in dee Snyder and Alice cooper, but if either apologized and at least TRIED to listen to the trans community... I would definitely forgive them
its such a shame that doubling trippling and quadrupling down seems to be common thought. as a transperson even being in the USA it makes me feel like a wanted criminal when i just want to look cute.
This saddens me. My sister(a trans woman) introduced me to Jill Bearup and we both really liked her stuff. Time to unsubscribe from her channel. Thank you for making this video.
I used to enjoy Bearup's "Stuff You Like" videos way back in the day. When rage-focused critics were dominating the review spaces on UA-cam and other, now defunct video hosting sites at the time, her approach was a breath of fresh air. Then, in what seemed like completely out of left field, she released that online open letter promoting some Stuff I Very Much Did Not Like (transphobia), and, thankfully, creators associated with her at that time dropped her faster than a hot potato. She has only bubbled up onto my radar twice (once with the Tom Scott appearance and once on a popular feminist blog who dropped their support as soon as they were alerted to her behavior), and I had assumed she learned to quiet down. Never happy to hear such a hateful voice is still reaching people.
Well, she's very much kept it off of her channel at least. I've been watching her on youtube since she started the shorts series that ended up becoming her "Just Stab me Now" book, and I had *no idea*. The only "hmm??" moment I had very recently was her gushing about Hogwarts Legacy.
Yeah, it was disappointing. Though it wasn't his only failure, I recall Black and leftist creators being critical of his glowing coverage of Boston Dynamics, specifically their robot dog, worried that it'd be used for policing applications. Tom Scott reassured people that this wouldn't be the case. They're now routinely deployed in policing.
@@EssenceOfThought yeah that robot dog video was when I left. Maybe beforehand? Memory is a tricky thing. There is a real problem of tech channels covering stuff in a vacuum as if surveillance and politics etc don’t exist.
@@EssenceOfThought True. Fun fact: Lindsay Ellis kicked Jill off her then platform Chez Apocalypse, because of Jill's transphobia. Mind you Ellis remains otherwise problematic.
I forgot she existed tbh. I got red flags from her before she started promoting Hogwarts Legacy for the same reason I got red flags from Shad before he fell off the deep end - they both started talking about their respective religions, and completely unprompted.
damn... I've been subscribed to her for a few years now and I was even going to buy her book... I'm really not surprised but wow this sucks... transphobia is such a weird mind poison with how any pushback against it almost universally makes transphobes just double down or dig in harder.
ooof. I noticed that Jill's name was tagged red on Shinigami Eyes but couldn't see a reason why from watching her videos, and a quick google search I didn't seem to find anything. Kinda sucks to get confirmation of all this. Thank you for covering this.
One thing I learned, is that if it's tagged by default on SE, there's a definite reason, and if I can't find out the why and there wasn't some huge drama about her that might have caused a mass-tagging by 4chan/KF trolls (i.e. she said something to "own the libs" and they liked it), then it's a case of pretending the bigotry didn't happen and I personally don't give the benefit of the doubt to someone who just deletes their bigotry quietly and pretends it didn't happen instead of apologizing or even complaining about it before removing it. The latter two can change and I'll give them chances to clean the poo from their shoes. The first one just knows bad optics and will go back to it the second they feel empowered in their bigotry again.
I was one of the people who stupidly left a comment on her hogwarts mistery video. I literally commented on a john green video because she didn't have monetisation. I feel dumb as fuck. Why didn't I check other comments. I didn't even do research on her, i was thinking about buying her book. I am angry, I feel so lied to.
wait how old is Landon in the photos they are sharing? cos calling it revenge porn might not even be far enough in my book if i understand what you are saying about the ages
You're right, I didn't know I didn't want this. But I did need it. I loved Jill Bearup's content way back when, and I was on the verge of getting back into it, but I had no idea she was at all involved in this, let alone so deeply as to be writing her own screeds. It's distressing how many outwardly pleasant-seeming people this horrific ideology claims, but I suppose it's not surprising when hiding their hatefulness behind a sensitive veneer is their whole brand.
@@EssenceOfThought And I appreciate you taking the time to put this together! I watched the prior videos too, and I can see the time and effort you put into making them thorough. I can only imagine how soul-sucking that research must have felt, so I hope it's some comfort to know your work isn't wasted.
God I haven't thought of her in years. Something something citing the Deep Magic, I remember being a fan of Chez Apocalypse/Channel Awesome when Jill went full mask off. All of her (former) friends and colleagues were caught off-guard, I remember Lindsey Ellis posting something in response to her like "Have you been hacked?". I'm sure there were plenty of warning signs I missed since I was younger then, but it genuinely felt so out of character for Jill to say such hateful things. Sad to see she's continued to dig herself deeper into that hole.
Why do they pretend to care about other people at all? We all know that people like Jill would literally stab anyone in the back if it meant more fame money, feeling superior to others, or if anyone bruised her massive ego that day etc if she could.
They do it to appeal to the centre right neoliberals who feel like they are progressive. These fascists always weaponize empathy to try and further their goals which are the disenfranchisement of all minority groups. It's why they use the think of the children line while siding with child molesters. They in fact just want to personally be part of the in group within Western fascist movements and don't care about anyone but themselves, including other cis women.
The reason why they claim to care for cis women in prisons, children, etc etc, is to paint and reinforce the picture of "all trans people are rapists and children are tricked into being trans", the LITERAL EXACT SAME RHETORIC USED AGAINST HOMOSEXUAL MEN AND WOMEN BACK IN THE 80s, aka Anita Bryant's and her ilk of homophobes exact wording towards gay men. The only reason why her rhetoric worked was because she relied heavily on "Think of the children", which is now a home-stay of any bigoted and unjust movement in America. TL;DR it's to make sure life is as awful as possible for said demographic, to dehumanize them and hopefully to get them killed or get them to kill themselves
I feel ashamed that I had no clue about this until this video, but that's exactly why this video is important. Also, this is not nearly as important as discussing the nazi shit, but I want to say that the defense of "if I were transphobic, then the trans people i know are transphobes, and the word loses all meaning" is such a weak defense, like yes it's possible to be trans and also transphobic, the beliefs you hold can have many factors to how they were shaped and society has a lot of transphobic right now.
I was surprised to see Ms. Bearup's name appear on my recommendations in the year of our lord 2025. For a brief second I dared to hope she has reconsidered her stance because I did actually enjoy her videos back in the day before all the anti-trans stuff. But reading the title quickly brought me back to earth.
well sh!t... That creator literally showed up for me over the holidays because of her demonitization issue. I checked in on that saga as it unfolded and was rooting for her to get her channel back up and running.... Because of me watching that, UA-cam now keeps recommending her videos to me. Thankfully the algorithm also showed me *your* video about her. Will be hitting "do not recommend channel" the next time she pops up for me.
There are *signs* here and there in her day-to-day work. When I did my original breakdown in 2022, some people noted they felt off about ways in which she essentialised women's bodies, making broad claims about strength and the such, as well as some of the language she used. So, not really. Just another 'trust your gut' moment. If someone feels off, particularly those with a large platform, there's often a reason.
@@EssenceOfThoughtinterestingly, as a fencer, she should know that strength is secondary to technique. One if the best fencers I know is a woman half my size. She is scarily good. Why? She adapted the old techniques to her body. That's what all capable fencers do. You are tall, you use your reach from above, you are small, you fence lower, you are light and nimble, you fence closer to your opponent. Tl;dr she has no clue on so many levels. 😊
Unfortunately a lot of people involved in the medieval space online have strange white supremacist views like this. I’m hoping to carve out a niche for inclusive medieval enjoyers someday but my hopes are low
I have been watching her for a while and even bought the book... While not familiar with your content, this paints a pretty clear picture and I couldn't be more disappointed in Jill. This is why I have no Idols anymore.
Oh wow. I used to watch Jill when she was on Channel Awesome and I used to put her in the same category as Lindsay Ellis and Dan Olson as the people on CA making like, real, thoughtful content on the things she talked about. I don't remember exactly what it was that made me stop watching her. I want to say there was some sort of Internet drama involved but it could have just as easily been I lost interest in her videos. I guess I really dodged a bullet with that. I'm a trans woman and it's pretty disgusting that this is the person she has become.
Thanks for this video, I had to stop watching Bearup about a year ago when I, a trans-femme agender person, shared a random video of her's with a non-binary friend, and they warned me about her 'views'; at the time I had been watching Bearup for a number of years, and was even looking into trying stage combat for myself, a long with buy her book, sorry it was too long bought to return, it made good kindling though. Since I've had neither the skills nor drive to look any deeper into Bearup'd BS, as at least now I have more of a picture.
Well this is shitty to find out, but glad I stumbled on it. I’d say I can’t believe I didn’t see it sooner, but I’ve learned over the years that transphobes will actively hide their hatred towards us as much as possible until they know they can get away with it. As a trans woman and someone that really enjoys fight choreography this is going to sting for a while. Still better to know than not.
Damn, I’d been a fan of hers for a long time.If she cares about any oppression, she should care about all oppression. Transphobia worsens sexism and is quite frequently used as a tool for it. Transphobia is used to enforce and compound racism. Until her channel becomes a place safe for all people, I don’t want any part of it. Same for her other work. I really truly hope she lets go of this hatred and can grow as a person. I believe she has the capacity. I hope she has the will.
Sadly, if the last three years have taught me anything, it's that that is very unlikely. That's why this video is focussed on warning her LGBT+ fans rather than trying to convince her of anything.
That's the thing. The transphobes hate women. Because a man wanting to be a woman makes no sense to them, it's like giving away your benefits. And a woman wanting to be a man threatens their hierarchy. How is that hard to see? Transphobia and feminism are fundamentally opposed.
This is really disappointing, I did enjoy her breakdown videos of movie/tv swordfighting. I never would have guessed she held these views. I was even thinking about buying her book, its not usually the type of book I would spent money on I just wanted to support her. Certainly not going to do that now.
Damn, I thought she looked familiar, I've seen her shorts. It's always bittersweet finding out someone failed the vibe check, like how hard is it to not advocate against vulnerable people?
Oh, FFS. She's one I quite liked the content from, but now yet another chucked into the "don't recommend this channel" bin. Thanks for the [well presented] information. I'll skip watching the previous video, as it seems to be superfluous. Best wishes for the new year not being total .
I've watched her videos for years, and I didn't have any idea about this despicable history.... I'm deeply saddened to hear all of this, but I'm glad to learn of it. I'd rather be faced with the unpleasant truth than be left to ignorantly support someone so antithetical to my core beliefs. Thank you for coming forward with this.
Dang it. I really liked her book. Guess that's ruined now. Why does this keep happening? Why is empathy such a hard concept for so many people to apply to situations they can't directly relate to? Just because you can't understand someone's suffering, doesn't mean that you shouldn't do everything you can to end that suffering in the scientifically proven way
Is just me or are a few of the popular UA-camrs deep into Historical medieval clothes and knights and fighting problematic, I remember some male UA-camr into similar things like Bearup ending up some weird anti-SJW channel or something
I think it has to do with the far-right romanticising ages past, therefore they're more likely to be drawn to the field, so they feel overly represented.
As a trans guy in the reenactment community and who happens to be into medieval history, yeah... it's dangerous out here. I have to vet people and groups very carefully before associating with them.
I'm way into history. It's very, very easy for people to glorify certain aspects, romanticise other parts and slowly radicalise people against modern developments as going against some (imaginary) natural order. Quit watching quite a few channels over this because people started to glorify the history they were supposed to be teaching.
I knew since the first time you covered her that this Jill person was rubbish, but this is a LOT. Kudos to you for putting in this hard work in order to inform. Delving into this kind of person hurts a lot, and that's no small feat. Thank you for the emotional as well as physical labour in this video 💚🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Yeah, from the way she remained silent during the Tom Scott incident, I also concluded that she was still as spiteful as ever yet was just holding back for the money.
I don't usually write comments but I had been subscribed to Jill up until now, while I have really enjoyed her content and wanted to buy her book, I have since unsubscribed since I cannot support what she believes in any way. Thank you for making this video and informing us if we were previously unaware and only watched her casually.
@@EssenceOfThoughtfound out adults cannot block channels only "request that they not be on the home page" Can't let the users control their experience too much.
Thank you for making this video and thus spreading awareness. I didn't know about this side of Jill Bearup and enjoyed her comments on stagefighting and armour. While I don't have the means to support anyone financially I was (until a few seconds ago) subscribed to her channel. I don't want anything to do with people who willingly support/expand transphobia or any other kind of bigotry. As I can pass as a cis white middle aged heterosexual man I know I am privileged in being able to dodge most hatred when I don't have the energy to deal with it. (Which happens a lot unfortunately due to my health.) That said, I do take pride in having been at the forefront of kicking all (at least all who publicly act like it) transphobes out off the organisation I was a part of. While we can't evict anyone for their thoughts we can (and should) yeet people when their actions are bigoted and wrong. It takes frustratingly long to do so in a fair and just way, but it is important to refuse giving them any ammunition to try and frame themselves as the victims wherever possible. Hopefully sometime in the future I'll be able to do more again on this other than type a simple youtube comment.
"The deep dives you didn't know that you didn't want." What a perfect line haha. I very much didn't know how much I didn't want this information, but I am glad you delivered it to me. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Thank you for this video. I was one of those who had heard some earlier accusations but fell for explanations/excuses she offered up. I don't generally get into creators beyond the videos they put out and so didn't see all this further evidence. Thanks for laying it all out. It's wild how many authors and youtubers I'm shedding all because Rowling won't just go away and acts as a lightning rod of hate.
I forgot about her. UA-cam a while back recommended some of her videos about swords, which were mildly interesting, then I saw a video where she gushed over some CS Lewis quote about always assuming tradition must exist for a reason, and she said the quote in a snotty tone of voice, and I was just like, this is too many levels of insufferable and swords aren't a big interest of mine. I hadn't thought of her since, and this information is disturbing, but now I don't feel bad about being so petty.
I wanted to say thank you for not shying away from openly discussing intermisia/interphobia as it intersects with racism and transphobia. Lately it feels that a number of people gloss over it, or try to 'come to the defense' of those of us in the intersex community when we are discussed, yet often those are the very first people to use it against us when they wish to be transphobic.
Elizabeth Wheatley, book goblin, is promoting Jill's new boom. She has also talked about being in an arranged marriage. The marriage made me question her in general, and this is pushing it further.
Slight correction: Elizabeth did not have an arranged marriage as in a partner selected for her by parents or community. She herself chose to use the services of a matchmaker to meet prospective partners. I have no clues about what she thinks/believes otherwise, but she has been pretty open about how she met her husband.
NGL, I was very confused until I heard your voice, because I first saw the youtube preview thing, so I saw you before I heard you and I was like "Wait.. I don't remember this channel? But the brain thing looks familliar...." Then the moment I hit play I was like "Ahh! It's her!" XD
I remember seeing a video on her a while ago and got uncomfortable with watching her vids, realised it had been a while and I'd forgotten the details of what she did wrong and if she's changed. Sad to see she's not improved and actually got worse.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have watched some of her stuff in the past without knowing about her horrible beliefs. If I ever come across her stuff again, I will block her. Thank you again for your work. ❤
I just want to let you know that I appreciate this information, especially because I know that you likely get threatening backlash for sharing it. I found Jill Bearup through her sword fight analysis videos and enjoyed them... and then recently your previous video popped up on my feed. I'm sure I'm not the only (former) member of her audience who does not want to support bigotry. If you'd never made the video, I likely would never have known any of it. So thank you, and also please stay safe!
@sevensongs Thankfully, now that Tom Scott is out of the picture, it's mostly just radical bigots coming after me, which, honestly, I much prefer to misguided centrists sealioning me.
I remember running away from her content after that post of hers. A few years back, I went looking to see if she'd changed directions. All I found was she had tried to scrub the post from the Internet, never made any sort of meaningful apology and just tried to keep quiet about it (apparently not forever though!). So that told me everything I needed to know. Sucks to see she's gone all in on the Rowling 10 Step Guide to TERF Life, but hopefully your video helps get more people to realize and stop following her.
I'd recently screenshotted a pic of her book cover to remind myself to buy it. As a casual fan, who enjoyed her Shorts - I had absolutely no idea about any of this. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I really appreciate the time and effort you've put in to spreading the word ❤
I'll be among those unsubscribing today. And I'll be sharing this of course. I can't imagine how I have watched her videos for years but never encountered any of this hatred somehow.
I’m not going to watch the video so I’m sorry for the analytics, I believe you I just can’t watch it right now. This made me sad I really liked her Just stab me now book series and a few other bits, it’s always disappointing when someone who superficially at least presents themselves as a feminist turns out to be bigoted and hateful
I found Jill Bearup through her series that became Just Stab Me Now. I really enjoyed her channel and even bought her book. It's incredibly dissapointing to hear another youtuber I liked is a bigot. It's frustrating how common seemingly fine people are transphobes.
Good job as usual! Haven't been commenting in a while, but I have been trying to watch when my mental energy is there! C: It's infuriating to listen to/read people like Jill Bearup's words... Doesn't even have to be in her voice, I could feel my shoulders tensing up! Vile way of wording herself in regards to trans people... And her saying "I don't have the money to share my political opinions" really pissed me off. I'm thankful it's shutting her up, but it's just so frustrating, because lots of people who are oppressed also don't have the money, but they don't have a fucking choice
:(((((( aw man, cant have shit in detroit :(((((( (sidenote, to everyone using shinigami eyes, ive heard from lots of ppl that its not a perfect tool at all and that decisions to mark ppl are made by a v small group of ppl with no way to appeal those choices. idk much about it, i dont use it, but just letting yall know)
Thank you for the enlightening video. I was a big fan of this creator, I had a free patreon account and was planning on being a full fledged patron. Now I am sad I was fooled, but also realizing that i was fooling myself. The hogwarts legacy post really ground my gears, but i let myself think it was only poor taste in games. It was only indicative of a more apalling mindset. Thanks again for the great videos (i also watched the previous video you did).
@EssenceOfThought is right: this is a wrenching video, uncomfortable even for a cis person to watch, but necessary. Even so, it contains many reasons to hope, the most conspicuous of which is that Imane Khelif still has her medals and still has her career.
I've never heard or seen anything problematic from her, but also have not been part of her Patreon. Thought it was odd she talked about something Hogwarts Legacy related on Tiktok the other day (considering creators usually hear about significant issues like what went down around the release of this game) and have promptly unfollowed and blocked her there. Thanks for the reminder to unsubscribe her here as well. I do not want to support her
I'm sorry we have to go through this again but I appreciate the update and the confirmation that she hasn't moderated her views in the slightest. Unfortunately I saw your first set of videos after I'd bought and read her book (and honestly? Was a bit disappointed by? The writing was...okay? Ish? Okayish? The parts of the story that were different from the yt shorts were...okay. Mostly. I was generally disappointed that I'd spent money on it but in a meh way and then I saw your videos and was and am very disappointed that I'd spent money on it.). I also feel you on your disappointment with your YT content creator who failed you. I recently was asked to steer a community I'm part of away from supporting a person for their community-related activities because they've since turned most of their attention to being a politically active anti-vxer and even though I didn't tell anyone not to buy her stuff or use her stuff or talk about her stuff, all I asked them to do was not directly link to her stuff, and the majority consensus was that my asking them not to do that made some people uncomfortable and I was very wrong to do it. So supporting people who are trying to change laws because they think being neurodivergent is literally worse than dying of easily spread diseases with high mortality rates even though the part connecting it to neurodivergence is entirely made up but the highly contagious, deadly disease part is real and already killing people again, mostly infants, that's fine but asking them to please not is disruptive to the community. I no longer feel safe there.
Sorry I couldn't get there sooner. And yeah, I've become a bit of a 'hero' slayer these last few years. You get a lot of abuse for it, but sometimes the people thanking you hurts even more. It's certainly a position you get no joy from, even if you know it needs to be done.
Thank you for letting me know. Unsubscribed from her. I can deal with ignorance and even discomfort against me. I cant deal with outright hatred that denies its hate.
Finding out a creator I like is actually awful: 😢 Finding this out in a video that is well researched, thoughtful and interesting AND has proper footnotes: 😃 ...suffice it to say, I just swapped one follow with another. :)
Seeing all the comments being crestfallen about this I guess I'm glad I found out about Jill's issues with trans people a long time ago, cause I got issues with people having issues with trans people.
Found this after watching your last video. If anything good has come out of JK Rowling and Jill Bearup's behaviour it's that I have another person like me to watch on here now~ 😅
At 12m and i don't even need the rest of the video. I'm so upset i didn't know this about jill bearup before now. 2017?! How did i not know?! Thank you for this
Ugh, word - I could use a link myself. I presume the intent is to create rubric that can't be argued with in bad faith ("I'M NOT SCARED OF TRANS PEOPLE OMG I JUST DISAGREEEEE") but I think that's a fool's errand. They're going to do that anyway. And why should we cater to their BS? But I will admit, I remember being a child and learning about homophobia and asking if they were actually afraid, the homophobes. You have to acknowledge that hatred comes from fear to move past the point and some people won't. I hope more detail can be added by someone who knows better.
Theyre synonyms. Misia just makes it explicitly clear that we're discussing the hatred against trans people, not just fear of. The Phobia suffix will still be understood
Misia is a Greek suffix meaning 'hatred'. Think Mis--ogyny, Mis-anthrope, Miso-theist, i.e. hatred of women, people, and god(s) respectively. People such as myself have adopted the term transmisia to try and distinguish between ideological bigots and people with genuine clinical phobias, as ridiculing bigots (rightfully so) whilst using the term 'phobia' stigmatises people with genuine phobias, often making said people more hesitant to seek out help, delaying treatment, whilst also absolving bigots of personal responsibility for their actions. Pretty much it's marking bigotry for what it is, an ideological condition, which allows us to tackle it more effectively. Contrary to what people assert, the switch has absolutely nothing to do with the supposed ambiguity of clinical phobia. A phobia in psychology has always referred to any pathological aversion, i.e. fear, hatred, or disgust. It's just a change we decided to adopt on the channel, but we still use 'phobia' for titles and such since it's the word people recognise. You're free to use either on the channel.
@@EssenceOfThought I have multiple clinical phobias and was in my prior comment acknowledging the non clinical use of the suffix in these words. Medicalizing terms can itself be a problem, and phobia has a history of use long before its use in medical diagnosis. When discussing the adoption of transmisia, it's important to be clear of the definition using prior commonly accepted terminology. Casual and non high stakes explanations help remove the social fear of messing up and being rejected for not using the exact right word.
Thank you for this video. I came accross Bearup later than 2017 and watched mostly the shorts off of which she based her book. I feel dirty. I didn't know what a disgusting person she was. I'm so sorry, but she won't get any support from me going forward and I am so glad I didn't buy her book or merch.
This is extremely upsetting for me, I don't watch her videos as much as I used to, but her sword fighting videos got me through a difficult time. I'm just thankful I didn't have enough money to buy her book. Thank you for making this video, I don't know how much of it I'll be able to watch, but I am no longer subscribed to her because of it.
I had been subscribed to her until 10 minutes ago after your 2022 vid came up in my recommendations, but I hadn't watched her content in over 18 months, mostly because she mostly does shorts & I'm not into shorts, & every longer vid was a book plug. I hadn't been specifically aware of her transphobia but it kinda tracks, she seemed to lean non "PC" in general.
Much love.
Thank you. It’s a little disheartening to realize that a creator that I admired is a hateful bigot, but the information needs to be available so that we can choose to not support hatred.
i had this same feeling when it first came out, though i hadn’t watched Jill long at that point
Sorry to hear you are going through this, I had the same with her a year ago.
yeah i hadnt watched her stuff in a while but i do remember enjoying it, and not realizing that she was a bigot, explains why after i got sicckc of shadeversity i ended up on her channel
I felt the same with all the stuff that came out about Lily Orchid.
@karmachameleon326 Thank you for taking the time to listen, as I know it's not easy.
Like it must be hard work being so transphobic that youtube compares your misogyny to literal gamergate youtubers, I could never.
that Princess Bride video was also how i found her. lucky there’s no shortage of content on that movie
@@LiarJudas666 Inconceivable!
I abandoned Shad when his social views were no longer being kept hidden. I even bought his novel... (spoilers, it's a piece of trash worse than any movies Shad calls garbage).
I rode that same algorithm wave.
@jaebebifi Yeah, and it's ironic just how alike they are, considering they likely view themselves as total opposites.
I'm sickened that I have only now found this out, after watching her for over a year. I seldom read comments, so I had not seen these. Thank you for covering this.
Same, my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
I probably would have bought her book if I had not happened on this video. I'm not normally one for following people on social media, so I had no idea as to Ms Bearup's character.
Yeah, me too
Gender affirning surgery has a lower regret rate than HP tattoos.
wishing you and your son the very best
I'm not going to mince words. At the end of the day, denying people any kind of medical treatment deemed medically necessary is eugenics.
That's an interesting point, I never thought of it from that perspective. Since trans people aren't inherently disabled, I didn't think to apply that lens.
If it's targeted towards a specific group like it is here then yes, it certainly can be considered that.
@@EssenceOfThoughtIf her real thoughts would get her mobbed by people who find her views disgusting and hateful maybe her views are the issue and not her having to hide them
That's a pretty perfect way if putting it
He was so offended in the original dub, too, lmao.
"DID YOU JUST SHOOT ME IN THE LEG?" my brother in transdimentional space plants, you started the fight
For a person named Jill, she sure does not know jack.
You'd think Jill was the one who fell down and broke her crown
@JohnnyTheWolf-d3p I see what you did there!
Fabulous comment!
I can confirm that she does not know me!
If I had a nickel for every time I stopped watching a medieval weapons nerd before they went way off with radical right wing opinions I'd have two nickels... Which isn't a lot but I'm sad it happened twice.
Shade?
chances are they already had those beliefs LONG before coming forward with them which is even sadder, like these people are becoming actively more and more bold with their horrid "opinions" as time goes on, the world is literally heading backwards as we speak and it's not only an issue in the US and the UK, it's just as bad in the rest of Europe if not worse (I'm in central europe and I imagine it gets worse the further east/south you go)

I LOVE SellswordArts. Robinswords has a positive vibe as well, but I dont know any of his feelings on LGBTQ or politics
@@A.R._Ironstarthere’s also Pride Knights!
@Phil9874 She's invoking the silent majority to try and make trans people feel unsafe, to doubt that the people in their life really support them.
*fencers salute*
Not only your cisters.
Don't feel bad about that. My own spouse was a huge fan for years until I told them what she was like when talking about anything but swords. 💚 You know now, and that matters!
Not only your sister have your back.

Your brethren of the sword also are on your side.
Same here.. it hurts..
@sky1846 Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you'll be stronger without her feeding off you.
I used to watch Jill Bearup's content until I learned about her transmisia. I do consider it delightfully ironic that she introduced me to writer Seanan McGuire who supports trans rights and has trans representation in her novels.
Oh my I gotta check Seanan MgGuire out ^^
Ooh, her InCryptid seems like an interesting read ^^ Thanks for introducing her to me
I love Seanan McGuire and Seanan McGuire is a really really really talented writer which, as someone who unknowingly bought and read Bearup's book, Bearup is...not. Even before I found out she was spreading transmisia the best I could say about it was that the concept is cute and the writing wasn't so bad I couldn't finish. Wish it had been. blech.
@LindaDanvers Glad you could still find some joy!
@@idiotically-everything I really enjoy the October Daye series and the Wayward Children books.

Thanks for listening, that's all I wanted with this video, to warn people.
This is the first I've heard of the Tom Scott issue. Really disappointed in him
I don't think he was being malicious, I just feel he got lazy when he was warned, and then felt like he was being unfairly criticised for it.
I would definitely forgive them
its such a shame that doubling trippling and quadrupling down seems to be common thought. as a transperson even
being in the USA it makes me feel like a wanted criminal when i just want to look cute.
Tom Scott being a weakling about this was quite disappointing.

@e.a.spikol6229 When even Lindsay Ellis is calling you out, you know you've fucked up.
That does seem to be a common factor between them.
damn... I've been subscribed to her for a few years now and I was even going to buy her book... I'm really not surprised but wow this sucks... transphobia is such a weird mind poison with how any pushback against it almost universally makes transphobes just double down or dig in harder.
Egotism plus self righteousness is a hell of a drug cocktail
@n3mo1123 Yeah, that's why my primary concern is warning people within her community. What she does is largely irrelevant to me.
ooof. I noticed that Jill's name was tagged red on Shinigami Eyes but couldn't see a reason why from watching her videos, and a quick google search I didn't seem to find anything. Kinda sucks to get confirmation of all this. Thank you for covering this.
Legit, googling it was just “oh she said some stuff but deleted them and changed her views”, like no she didn’t she doubled down.
Thank you for listening, and at least we now have confirmation.

Well, I appreciate you taking the time to listen.

I didn't even know she went back that far on youtube!
I remember the Deep Magic too 😅
Why are they pretending to care about people in prison?
@BlueBeetle1939 Because they see empathy as a covert weapon.
Please, don't feel bad. She's very good at hiding what she is, the fact that she's deceiving people to take their time and money is on her, not you.
Yeah, at least she removed all doubt.
well sh!t...
Before watching the video.
"Is it a bad sign I'm not really surprised?"
@@EssenceOfThoughtYeah, weird vibes about women being incapable of a lot of things because all women have the same body type apparently
Yeah, that's a lesson I learnt a while back.
Yeah, but it's good to still have confirmation.
Thanks for taking the time to listen.
:( so sad. I only recently learned this about her. I am just glad I didn’t buy her book
Yeah, that's why I'm trying to get the news out.
Thank you for sharing this information, this is the first time I’m hearing about this…
Thanks for listening.
Thanks for taking the time to listen.
Thanks for taking the time to listen, it is appreciated.
Shadiversity? Yeah… unfortunately this is SUPER common
Casually seen and enjoyed her content, didn't realize she held these views. Guess I'm blocking her channel.
That's a good idea.
@@EssenceOfThoughtfound out adults cannot block channels only "request that they not be on the home page"
Can't let the users control their experience too much.
(Which happens a lot unfortunately due to my health.)
That said, I do take pride in having been at the forefront of kicking all (at least all who publicly act like it) transphobes out off the organisation I was a part of.
Same honestly most of my friends are trans so now I feel bad like their badness is like ink on my clothes (it’ll wash away but it was there once)
@jeroenimus7528 Thanks for taking the time to listen, it is appreciated.
"The deep dives you didn't know that you didn't want."
What a perfect line haha.
I realized she was a bigot through shinigami eyes. I was surprised, looked it up and got sad :(
I did too.
Well, good on you for keeping your wits about you and following through. And thanks for listening, just wish I had happier news.
What's shinigami eyes?
@@zoeolsson5683 a user run extension that flags transphobic creators/people online.
I wanted to know what shinigami eyes is too so I searched. Looks like a browser extension, probably not the Grimes song lol
Thanks for getting the word out about Jill. I didn't know her position about us until I saw your Tom Scott video a couple days ago.
Oh dear, I actually had Just Stab me Now on my Kobo wishlist for a long time. Did not know about this. Will be removing the book from my wishlist.
Glad I could spare you from that.
Just watched my first video of hers yesterday. Thanks for the video. She’s going straight to the ‘never again’ pile.
Thanks for listening, and all the best.
Incredible work, thanks for really shining the light on these things and spelling it out. :))))
WHAT. Ugh. Should have known.
I had not seen that yet, but if so this makes me reconsider buying anymore of Wheatley's books.
I will check her recent vids.
Just found Wheatley's short. You cannot post new comments on it. This is a bad sign.
I guess I am dropping Wheatley as well. Ah well.
NGL, I was very confused until I heard your voice, because I first saw the youtube preview thing, so I saw you before I heard you and I was like "Wait.. I don't remember this channel? But the brain thing looks familliar...."
Then the moment I hit play I was like "Ahh! It's her!" XD
Yeah, I switch between camera and avatar a lot.
@@EssenceOfThought Ahhh, I didn't know that. I must've somehow managed to only watch the ones with your avatar XD
I forgot the harry potter game existed must not have been very good after all if even the people going so hard for it no longer even care
It's funny how it's had the same cultural impact as the Avatar movies, which is to say none.
Thanks for your work!
Thanks for taking the time to listen.
Thank you for listening, and thanks for sharing, it means a lot.
It's infuriating to listen to/read people like Jill Bearup's words...
That's completely fair, I know my stuff has been damn depressing as of late.
And yeah, I thought the same thing about the security comment.
:(((((( aw man, cant have shit in detroit :(((((( (sidenote, to everyone using shinigami eyes, ive heard from lots of ppl that its not a perfect tool at all and that decisions to mark ppl are made by a v small group of ppl with no way to appeal those choices. idk much about it, i dont use it, but just letting yall know)
She's deleting comments mentioning this off her newest video, coward... >:/
As someone who’s barely on social media, thanks for doing this video. I enjoy her stuff but I won’t support a bigot.
I do not want to support her
Oh. Oh no. Aww, this sucks. :(
Yeah, I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
@EssenceOfThought I'd very definitely prefer to know than not know though.
Well that’s a yikes!
A yikes indeed.
wow, okay. just found your channel here
Thank you, it means a lot.
Thank you so much. I’ve been enjoying Jill for years with just the fun things, but I had no idea what she supported off screen…
Thank you for letting me know. Unsubscribed from her. I can deal with ignorance and even discomfort against me. I cant deal with outright hatred that denies its hate.
Finding out a creator I like is actually awful: 😢
Finding this out in a video that is well researched, thoughtful and interesting AND has proper footnotes: 😃
...suffice it to say, I just swapped one follow with another. :)
Seeing all the comments being crestfallen about this I guess I'm glad I found out about Jill's issues with trans people a long time ago, cause I got issues with people having issues with trans people.
Found this after watching your last video. If anything good has come out of JK Rowling and Jill Bearup's behaviour it's that I have another person like me to watch on here now~ 😅
Well, thanks for taking the time to listen.
Wait isn’t she the armor lady? It’s always the most random people who turn out to be bigots.
I had no idea Jill Bearup had transphobic views... I've promptly unsubscribed...
At 12m and i don't even need the rest of the video. I'm so upset i didn't know this about jill bearup before now. 2017?! How did i not know?! Thank you for this
When did we transfer from phobia to misia? I didn’t get the handout I was sick that day. Can someone share the notes on google drive.
@ yeah that makes sense, I kind of wish that had been what everybody used from the start.
and i had held out hope (having not heard of her in ages) that she'd gotten better
Hey, at least we now have confirmation.
It's not on you, she's become very good at hiding what she is.
Actually kind of ironic that she had been a target of Shadiversity's anti-feminism & moaning about women in combat sports.
Can happily say I was never a member of her Petreon, her lowest tier was too expensive.
