Yeah, and it's not even a joke, it's realistic. It's one of the inconveniences of real life. You have a time limitation based on how quickly you can do something that's hard to do. The show is actually non-magical because of this. They don't just brush aside the difficulty of trying to do all of these ordinary things that really would be hard to do, and also terrifying, things that require a really long time to learn, with nobody to teach you.

Rockford Files and then Magnum PI were my favorites, with a brief Strikeforce/Robert Stack period in there, circa 1980. We got to be young during the Peak of America! I miss it terribly.
One thing I love about this show is, it's actually pretty realistic. If you were flying around crazily and out of control, it really WOULD be hard to have any idea where you were, and you'd really have to stop and look at a map. And that's what makes it so funny at the same time.
Forget about flying around crazily. In the days before GPS navigation, just driving around in an unfamiliar area could get you completely lost. Even WITH GPS, there are times when you get into a lot of trouble....
I think he'd get lost a lot more than he does. He's flown long distances in the show before with no problem about knowing where he is somehow. Just the control problems.

The inability to fly without crashing got old after a while, and it seems like they kind of backed off of that in the later episodes. Something I noticed watching the pilot was when Ralph took off from the mansion, he grabbed one of the portable landing lights and I'm guessing it weighed quite a bit, so using that as a counterweight, he probably had the smoothest flight ever. I wonder why the writers never went back to that, unless it was just more fun to make Ralph look like an idiot.

On the beach and in the ocean scenes, it switches from night to day. When the driver of the car parked on the beach gets out and shuts the door, there are shadows of him on the car and ground. This happens after he signals to the sub with his headlights, in the dark. When Ralph flies into the side of the submarine, it appears to be day. Lastly, when Bill asks the men on the beach to freeze, it is night again.
It's supposed to be a subversion of the usual superhero premises, but the bad guys still are so stupid. The arrogance and stupidity of the guy at 26:50..... dude, Mr. Hinkle has just withstood your bullets close range and demonstrated he's probably strong enough to uppercut you into the sun. Why are people fawning over this show now?
