- This is video after the 200mm of rain over the course of 48 hours - Rain Storm Abbotsford/Sumas Flats. “Whatcom” Road is the spelling. Usually there is no water in these areas. Farms, houses and roads. 100 years ago the area was a lake. At 4:40, the group in the boat were singing Giligan's Island theme song - take note of the guy with the captains hat. :)
There goes yet another chance to see my 90 yr old mother in Chilliwack since the pandemic locked the border.It opened,now this.She has since had a stroke and doesn't know me anymore.I am sad beyond belief.Pray for us both.I am in Bellingham.She is in long-term care now in Chilliwack.

Used to be a lake, mankind decided to change it now mother nature has took it back..unbelievable but inevitably
It's so sad to see the devastation and destruction caused by floods. I live in Louisiana where we've experienced several major floods with people having to be rescued from the roofs of their homes or cars. One thing I've learned is that property and homes can be replaced but lives can't! 🙏🙏🙏
There are so many homeless people in Abbotsford. This is a good time to reach out and help each other 🙏🏽

Even thought I am divorce I am still connected to his family. I have a grand niece and family in B.C. She is safe but cannot contact us very well. I am praying for all of them and other residents.

It hurts so much to see this. I lived in Abbotsford a few years ago. Now, seeing the city flooded like this… I send all my support to everyone involved.
the City of Abbotsford is not flooded, it is the Sumas Prairie, formerly known as Sumas Lake. If you lived in Abbotsford, you would know the area.
The COVID blocked are two countries then the borders opened .Then the mts got snow then it warmed up and now the rain what else will come for these two great nations.🙏

@@epicunicorn9987 That is the most childish thinking ever. Here in Germany (and I am from BC) we had horrible flooding in early July and it eventually went down. The world did not end.

People were told to stay home if possible, in many cases until it was too late. They have been rescued but much of the livestock and chickens are still out there. Now line-ups at grocery stores panic buying. All (major) routes to the interior of BC are blocked both roads and trains.
Lots panic buying in Penticton as well. empty coolers and shelves at every grocery store. nice video capture. ✌️

One thing is for sure, I'm really not surprised at all by how many boats I've been seeing in the footage I've seen. I mean we're known as "The City In The Country" for a reason, lots of country people out here and country people tend to own boats of all shapes and sizes. Just within my extended family we own 3 of the little aluminum fishing boats. Also people out here (at least that I know of) lots of them do river fishing, which can be more on the shallow side, so they're used to looking out for obstacles underwater.

Just Reminds me of 1975 and the Flood in December of that Year....We were evacuated by Army Boats from our Farm...My little Sister was carried by Army Guy...?where is the Presence of Army Here?...Travesty of Valley Dwellers .. 🙏🙏🙏🤲🤲🤲 Pray..
Army is here now. They couldn't come until the province was declared to be in an official state of emergency.

Does the flooding go as far west as Sumas Way? My heart is already broken, but I haven't seen Sumas Way.
Unfortunately this is what happens when you build on a flood plain... Sad that we need things like this to open our eyes and engineer for these worse case scenarios.
Well, they call it a flood plain for a reason. You take a gamble when build on flood plane.

Result of not building catchment basins for the runoff from the mtn. All the water that used to be absorbed by the soil there now runs off the pavement.
There's no catchment large enough for that volume. The whole valley is a flood plain (catchment basin).
The Upper Fraser Valley IS the catch basin. That's why it's called Flood Plane. Duh!
A major player in the flooding here was the Nooksack River just across the border south of Sumas Prairie, breeched...it was that river that tore through the levees and dams, that created most of this flooding...then the added rain didn't help...but there was an actual river draining into this area which created this.

The trillion $ infrastructure bill in the USA will need to be tapped to bolster the Nooksack River levee system.
WA state swore they would make sure that this would never happen again the last time. That was in the late 80s I believe.

What is happening regarding, factory chicken, pigs, and cows in Abbotsford?
lits of dead animals, garmers had to ooen the gates and pray for cows... milkions of dead chickens
The police tried to stop farmers from going in to rescue and move their animals. A lot of them did get moved but not as many as if there had been smart cooperation.
Probably all gone..
BC must do an immediate plunge of home prices for the next decade.
Home prices must reflect the economical earning of its " work force" .
No more, for profit properties with out major/ huge fees.
Realty BC, must do what is right for the people of the land and make homes affordable.
Homes at affordable prices for canadians in BC now!

Just a small example of what will happen as sea levels rise and climate changes. My dad always said...sarcastically..."but its not global warming". Move people....get to higher ground....and even there...its risk....fires...storms...floods...food shortages...supply issues....infrastructure failures.....this is our reality from here on out.... but its not global warming

Glad I didn't move there this summer. Hind sight is 20/20, the city council needs to rezone flood areas as parklands.
It's not just a flood area, it used to be an actual lake. The largest freshwater wetlands in BC.
its crazy to see how vulnerable we are with all our high tech stuff. cant imagine what it was like when it rained for 40 days inm the worldwide flood in noahs time.
God must be a real piece of work to inflict this kind of misery on people, but I guess the old saying holds true that he works in mysterious ways right.
