In my opinion I personally do not agree with it. But not every padded horse is beat and abused they don't live on pads and they don't hurt them. Now their is some who use chemicals and cook their legs along with using illegal stuff. Not all horses have awful lives on pads and many don't keep their horses on pads only when they show or a week before just so they get used to the weight and build them up.

The gait doesn't even look good! They look malformed and unnatural, almost like a german shepherd dog with bad hips! The natural gate is smooth, strong, and absolutely stunning (and not to mention the natural gait doesn't make the horse look like it is a severely abused, pained creature). I don't see anything fantastic in its natural gait would be suitable for side saddle riders but this jogging type gait can be taught to other horses. It needs to be illegal. Having that Extra height on the hooves will be straining their backs and weight distribution will be off.

Just because it's tradition, doesn't mean it's right. That one guy has been called out for multiple violations, yet he still doesn't realize he's done wrong. Putting a heavy chain around a horses leg causes so much pain, and so does a weight in the weird shoe thing. I don't like horse shoes as is, but this really takes the cake.
I don't normally believe in the death penalty, but I would make an exception for these - I can't think of an adjective strong enough to describe these evil monsters.
As if soring wasn't bad enough, the horses must also wear harnesses that forces the tail into an unnatural position, adding additional discomfort to the already exacerbating agony of soring. Regulations will only reduce the number of horse soring. Boycott it all, extinction of this practice is the only fix. No reason to meddle with horses' motion, they know best how to carry themselves.
There's a law change about to be presented to the Senate. The law bans all the horrible 'gait aids' that generate the DirtyLick. It's passed Congress but there are DirtyLickers in the Senate who will try to stop it. People have been protesting outside BigLick shows, writing to sponsors, to venue organisers, to exhibitors of equine product at BigLick shows. The crowds have gotten smaller but towns like Shelbyville are DirtyLick towns (it's been going on for 60 years) and there are infamous DirtyLick families - Webb, and Dick families to name but 2 - entrenched in this foul abuse.
The tendons in their tail are cut deliberately too, so that it can be unnaturally flipped over so that it appears more upright, so that is more pain, suffering and indignity that these poor abused beasts are made to suffer too! A truly evil, barbaric sadistic sport that should be entirely banned!

I rescued a walking horse back in 1991 he was terrified of people but after three years would follow me around and let me ride him at walk trot and occasionally canter which he struggled with. Sadly the stablyard hated that I just wanted him to be loved and happy. I hope things are changing

Thank you for producing this video to show lay people what some TN Walking people think is normal and ok. I don’t think those horses who were being beaten on the cross ties and laying down in their stalls refusing to get up because of pain were enjoying any of it. Apart from the evils of soreing, I’d like to see these trainers be forced to walk around all the time with shoes on uneven heights. You know what happens? When I got my first grade made Bobbi Sox, I was in a lesson (I was maybe 10 years old?) I yanked on my horses mouth. My trainer pulled me off Bobbi, grabbed my pony tail and said now you walk- you scared?? Best lesson in my life. never again did I do that. These poor horses.
Having shown these horses and attended numerous horse shows decades ago, I know from first-hand experience, that this is absolute cruelty to these horses--the soring, the chains that irritate the sored areas around the horses pasterns and the way that the horses are shod with hooves at steep angles, mounted on stacked leather atop almost draft horse weight shoes. Notice also the inhuman bits in their mouths with super-long shanks to keep their heads up and necks arched. The fabricated gait is anything but natural. Check out the riders. Put them on a real performance horse (a cutter or hunter jumper) and they'd fall flat on their asses with that slacker posture. One good sign from the looks of these videos --spectator attendance is way down from over the years. People are on to this completely unnecessary cruelty.
And these huge fat men that ride them on top of the pain these poor animals are in. I used to own and show pintos, never mistreated them. They got their winters off and got to be fat and wooly in the winter. They give you their heart and soul.

Even if they are just using the stacks, it can't be good for the horse in the long run. It completely changes the horse's bio mechanics and puts them at a great risk for developing serious joint issues. I honestly can't believe this kind of shit still goes on. It honestly looks quite ugly and unrefined the way they force them to move like that. So unnatural and cruel. All just for winning some shity blue ribbon.
Back in the early 50s we got one from kill auction; he was most loving and just beautiful. Our farriers took a lot of care with Sporty's hooves to get them back to normal. He got along with all our other horses. This abuse is something that should send these people to jail. AND the governor there just approves of all this artificial nastiness.
For people who are new to learning about horses, it's important to understand that a natural Tennessee Walking Horse is not the same thing as the Big Lick sored horses.
By watching this video the more I convince myself that we got the terms reverse: "what we call Animals are humans," "what we call humans are mere ANIMALS".
Tennessee Walkers have one of the smoothest natural walking gates of all the horse breeds, that's what they were originally bred for comfort in the saddle and for comfort needs of long rides by cavalry officers during the American civil war as well as plantation owners riding over hundreds of acres. The ridiculous high stepping walking gate urged in the show ring for the last few decades is usually artificially induced by clipping their heel tendons same thing was urged on Saddlebred owners/breeders as a result of the demands of the show ring. It is/was a barbaric practice however it is my understanding most owners are not pursuing the surgical technique any longer.
I and my horse are a victim of this cruel treatment- I purchased a 12 year old show horse from trainer/owner for the sole purpose of retiring him from this life- Soon after the deal was closed the horse shoes removed, the soring stopped, This Beautiful stately horse supposedly fell while being boarded at the sellers farm . The damage was sustained to his rear left leg. I was told he was let out in the pasture, which he had never been nor out of stall or without the 7 inch lift shoes he was wearing when he sustained the injury. He has not gotten any better since the injury in the Spring- I am currently looking for a rescue that will take him, before he gets even worse- These horses are nothing more than Prize money, Ribbons, and NOTORIETY to the owners, they are not considered to have feelings, or be God's gift as they were intended- The Humane Society needs to get more involved in this Industry, I, but more importantly my beautiful horse are living with the effects of this cruel in-humane abuse. They took the stacks off all at once?? I can’t believe they’d do that- the stacks need to be cut down gradually so the horse can get used to it before finally taking them off. Dieseling a Tennessee Walking horse is one of the cruelest things I have ever seen. Not that there is a right way to do this, but if the dieseling is done wrong, the horse's hooves become brittle. I have seen the hooves with deep bloody cracks. It was disgusting. The horse I saw had chains on the back legs and had the plastic on the front legs with diesel. The horse could barely walk. I would have rather seen the horse dead than to see it chained, with plastic milk jug looking things on the front filled with diesel, and a weighted collar around the neck for some wierd reason. I think it kept the foal's neck straight or something. The horses were being taken away when I was there. I was tasked with removing the trailers and machinery. We were stopped while the animal protection agency removed the horses so they would not be frightened. It was disgusting what I saw. Most of the horses were very young. I would say it was torture. To get the tail to stand up, a procedure called, "gingering," is performed. A ginger root is shoved up the anus or vagina of the horse and it picks up its tail because of the pain. I did not witness that part but another worker that was ceasing assets from the stables told me about it.
Imagine it's like putting dog/cat booties on dogs/cats and watch them walk and say ya that looks right... still can't compare that because besides having these strange things on their hooves is unlike dog or cat booties they horses are acting out uncomfortable or pain.
And the abuse it does to their skeletal and muscular systems is horrific as well. When their show days are over, these horses remain in terrible pain the rest of their lives. (Jan Griffiths).

i own a TWH and i think about how easy it would have been for her to be in this life, big lick sickens me, my TWH is my best friend, she is my first horse. TWH have amazing natural gaits, we don't need to change them. when people meet my horse they always love her gait, their gates are perfect just the way they are.

Midnight Sun and Merry Go Boy were world champs, and had beautiful natural high stepping gaits. It's an outrage that TWH showers have gone to such extremes, and this needs to be stopped.
The saddest part of this tradition is when you see the sale auctions full of walkers that are being sold because they are no longer able to perform. Most are not able to be ridden because of horrific bone and joint injuries. Meat packers buy most of them. They are stuffed into stock trailers and taken to Canada, Mexico, or even shipped overseas. The level of barbarianism is beyond words.
Every horse that’s in competition has some kind of torture to the horse! Drugs injected to make him run faster and I worked for a quarter horse breeder and heard horrible stories! The owner was a Doctor and loved quarter horses! He never used theses methods on our horses! They were treated like his own kids! It may have been a tax write off but I rode every horse he had and learned my love for the horses! Many horses were drug tested before the races that were disqualified before the races! Because of drugs in the drug test!

Share this video and let people know what's really going on with the Tennessee walking horses. They lift their legs that high because of soaring. If you don't know what that is it's where they soak bandages or cloths and caustic material such as kerosene ethanol alcohol gasoline and they wrap it around the horse's legs which causes intense pain and scarring to say let's soak in. It also causes ulcers and permanent damage. And I'm when the horse is going to the show they stack their hooves and put chains around their ankle so when they lift their legs the front legs to get that High stuff the chains rub up and down on their ankles and it causes intense pains they try to get off their hubs which is why they lift their legs they think it's going to stop the pain. But it doesn't add more pain because the chain is rubbing up and down they're hot and it's opening the sores and creating more pain this practice has got to stop. Most of the shows are in Kentucky and Tennessee in the Southeast celebration being the biggest one this practice has been going on for a very long time and the humane society is trying to crack down on it. they go to some of these shows and they test the animals Hawks and if they have any traces of chemicals than the horses disqualified but they cannot get to every show. If you go to a show make sure you take pictures and videos of the horse. And spread the word that the Tennessee walkers are being abused. This cruel practice has to stop. Tennessee walkers are very gentle loving horses and they do not deserve this!!!

The treatment of these horses is so messed up and absolutely disgusting. I bought a horse once in my home country (Australia) that was harness broken and the breeder/seller was stupid enough to show me a video of them breaking her to harness and how they got her to lift her feet higher - with steel hose clamps just under the heel and around the top of the coronet band. I was nearly sick. They were so proud of themselves. Both horses I got from them died of massive issues to do with worm burdens. Not small money either. They werent this particular breed, but my chosen breed which I shall not name as there arent that many here and it would just give it away instantly. The entire animal ownership industry needs to wake up to itself.
I remember when a Western Pleasure horses head was to be carried level with their withers. Then they decided the tip their ears should be below the withers. That went on for decades too, but humanity kicked in and threatened the AQHA show World...I went to Congress and noticed there are no more peanut pushers in the ring. In fact proper head carriage marks very well, while too low a headset, that used to clean up, don't even place anymore. Thank God. Just because something wrong has been done for decades, doesn't make it right, or justify the atrocity to continue. Want your breed to survive and thrive? Knock this shit off and show them what a real Tennessee Walker can do all on their own.

These people in favour of the Big Lick and all that it entails, are mentally dysfunctional. If they can't see the cruelty, they should be banned for life from owning, training, working or riding these horses both in and out of competition. When I lived in Tennessee, I learned that even Lamar Alexander would not intervene - revenues to the State of Tennessee were too great to be ignored. How sad is that?
They could ALL still show flat shod horses and revenues would grow because all TWH could then compete. Many will not because of the abuse and subsequent breakdown of many horses. It is a lie that they could not bring in same revenue. They do not plan to chg.
At the ranch I boarded my horses at, we had a lady who had a Tennessee Walker, who asked me to ride for a show. Leading up to the show she was teaching me how to que the gaits, and her horse was wearing low pads without weights or chains, or anything on his legs, and no tail brace. She said the pads would be gradually stacked higher over 3 months till show time, but she never mentioned anything about using chemicals or anything about soreing. According to her, a Tennessee walkers gait is inherited, but the big lick and entire composition is man made, by use of pads. She equated it with body modification, like tattoo's and piercing. She used padded ankle weights only when we were training and they didn't rub or hurt the horse, and he seemed perfectly fine and comfortable. It's probably a good thing I ended up breaking my wrist and not making that show, cause if I had seem this soreing thing going on, they woulda had to have the cops drag me outa there for assault and disturbing the peace.

Regulations will only reduce the number of horse soring. Boycott it all, extinction of this practice is the only fix.

There's a law change about to be presented to the Senate. The law bans all the horrible 'gait aids' that generate the DirtyLick. It's passed Congress but there are DirtyLickers in the Senate who will try to stop it.
People have been protesting outside BigLick shows, writing to sponsors, to venue organisers, to exhibitors of equine product at BigLick shows. The crowds have gotten smaller but towns like Shelbyville are DirtyLick towns (it's been going on for 60 years) and there are infamous DirtyLick families - Webb, and Dick families to name but 2 - entrenched in this foul abuse.
The tendons in their tail are cut deliberately too, so that it can be unnaturally flipped over so that it appears more upright, so that is more pain, suffering and indignity that these poor abused beasts are made to suffer too! A truly evil, barbaric sadistic sport that should be entirely banned!
Soring has been illegal since 1970 nothing stopped.

I rescued a walking horse back in 1991 he was terrified of people but after three years would follow me around and let me ride him at walk trot and occasionally canter which he struggled with. Sadly the stablyard hated that I just wanted him to be loved and happy. I hope things are changing

Thank you for producing this video to show lay people what some TN Walking people think is normal and ok. I don’t think those horses who were being beaten on the cross ties and laying down in their stalls refusing to get up because of pain were enjoying any of it. I think those trainers should be arrested for animal cruelty and sentenced to the maximum degree.
Apart from the evils of soreing, I’d like to see these trainers be forced to walk around all the time with shoes on uneven heights. You know what happens? You end up with horrible pain from being set at an unnatural posture. THOSE “PADS” aka “stacks” are as cruel as the chemicals and chains.We haven’t even touched the subject of how these horses TAILS ARE BROKEN and set in an unnatural uplift, just for the weird beehive hairdo look that these ignorant Big Lick people desire. When I got my first grade made Bobbi Sox, I was in a lesson (I was maybe 10 years old?) I yanked on my horses mouth. My trainer pulled me off Bobbi, grabbed my pony tail and said now you walk- you scared?? Best lesson in my life. never again did I do that. These poor horses.
Having shown these horses and attended numerous horse shows decades ago, I know from first-hand experience, that this is absolute cruelty to these horses--the soring, the chains that irritate the sored areas around the horses pasterns and the way that the horses are shod with hooves at steep angles, mounted on stacked leather atop almost draft horse weight shoes. Notice also the inhuman bits in their mouths with super-long shanks to keep their heads up and necks arched. The fabricated gait is anything but natural. Check out the riders. Put them on a real performance horse (a cutter or hunter jumper) and they'd fall flat on their asses with that slacker posture. One good sign from the looks of these videos --spectator attendance is way down from over the years. People are on to this completely unnecessary cruelty.
And these huge fat men that ride them on top of the pain these poor animals are in. I used to own and show pintos, never mistreated them. They got their winters off and got to be fat and wooly in the winter. They give you their heart and soul.

Even if they are just using the stacks, it can't be good for the horse in the long run. It completely changes the horse's bio mechanics and puts them at a great risk for developing serious joint issues. I honestly can't believe this kind of shit still goes on. It honestly looks quite ugly and unrefined the way they force them to move like that. So unnatural and cruel. All just for winning some shity blue ribbon.
Back in the early 50s we got one from kill auction; he was most loving and just beautiful. Our farriers took a lot of care with Sporty's hooves to get them back to normal. He got along with all our other horses. This abuse is something that should send these people to jail. AND the governor there just approves of all this artificial nastiness.
For people who are new to learning about horses, it's important to understand that a natural Tennessee Walking Horse is not the same thing as the Big Lick sored horses.

Tennessee Walkers have one of the smoothest natural walking gates of all the horse breeds, that's what they were originally bred for comfort in the saddle and for comfort needs of long rides by cavalry officers during the American civil war as well as plantation owners riding over hundreds of acres. The ridiculous high stepping walking gate urged in the show ring for the last few decades is usually artificially induced by clipping their heel tendons same thing was urged on Saddlebred owners/breeders as a result of the demands of the show ring. It is/was a barbaric practice however it is my understanding most owners are not pursuing the surgical technique any longer.
I and my horse are a victim of this cruel treatment- I purchased a 12 year old show horse from trainer/owner for the sole purpose of retiring him from this life- Soon after the deal was closed the horse shoes removed, the soring stopped, This Beautiful stately horse supposedly fell while being boarded at the sellers farm . The damage was sustained to his rear left leg. I was told he was let out in the pasture, which he had never been nor out of stall or without the 7 inch lift shoes he was wearing when he sustained the injury. He has not gotten any better since the injury in the Spring- I am currently looking for a rescue that will take him, before he gets even worse-
These horses are nothing more than Prize money, Ribbons, and NOTORIETY to the owners, they are not considered to have feelings, or be God's gift as they were intended- The Humane Society needs to get more involved in this Industry, I, but more importantly my beautiful horse are living with the effects of this cruel in-humane abuse. They took the stacks off all at once?? I can’t believe they’d do that- the stacks need to be cut down gradually so the horse can get used to it before finally taking them off. Dieseling a Tennessee Walking horse is one of the cruelest things I have ever seen. Not that there is a right way to do this, but if the dieseling is done wrong, the horse's hooves become brittle. I have seen the hooves with deep bloody cracks. It was disgusting. The horse I saw had chains on the back legs and had the plastic on the front legs with diesel. The horse could barely walk. I would have rather seen the horse dead than to see it chained, with plastic milk jug looking things on the front filled with diesel, and a weighted collar around the neck for some wierd reason. I think it kept the foal's neck straight or something. The horses were being taken away when I was there. I was tasked with removing the trailers and machinery. We were stopped while the animal protection agency removed the horses so they would not be frightened. It was disgusting what I saw. Most of the horses were very young. I would say it was torture. To get the tail to stand up, a procedure called, "gingering," is performed. A ginger root is shoved up the anus or vagina of the horse and it picks up its tail because of the pain. I did not witness that part but another worker that was ceasing assets from the stables told me about it.

i own a TWH and i think about how easy it would have been for her to be in this life, big lick sickens me, my TWH is my best friend, she is my first horse. TWH have amazing natural gaits, we don't need to change them. when people meet my horse they always love her gait, their gates are perfect just the way they are.

Midnight Sun and Merry Go Boy were world champs, and had beautiful natural high stepping gaits. It's an outrage that TWH showers have gone to such extremes, and this needs to be stopped.
The saddest part of this tradition is when you see the sale auctions full of walkers that are being sold because they are no longer able to perform. Most are not able to be ridden because of horrific bone and joint injuries. Meat packers buy most of them. They are stuffed into stock trailers and taken to Canada, Mexico, or even shipped overseas. The level of barbarianism is beyond words.
Every horse that’s in competition has some kind of torture to the horse! Drugs injected to make him run faster and I worked for a quarter horse breeder and heard horrible stories! The owner was a Doctor and loved quarter horses! He never used theses methods on our horses! They were treated like his own kids! It may have been a tax write off but I rode every horse he had and learned my love for the horses! Many horses were drug tested before the races that were disqualified before the races! Because of drugs in the drug test!
Had that horse kicked him and show him the pain he giving it the horse would of been wrong stupzzz I hate when people hurt such great creatures

Share this video and let people know what's really going on with the Tennessee walking horses. They lift their legs that high because of soaring. If you don't know what that is it's where they soak bandages or cloths and caustic material such as kerosene ethanol alcohol gasoline and they wrap it around the horse's legs which causes intense pain and scarring to say let's soak in. It also causes ulcers and permanent damage. And I'm when the horse is going to the show they stack their hooves and put chains around their ankle so when they lift their legs the front legs to get that High stuff the chains rub up and down on their ankles and it causes intense pains they try to get off their hubs which is why they lift their legs they think it's going to stop the pain. But it doesn't add more pain because the chain is rubbing up and down they're hot and it's opening the sores and creating more pain this practice has got to stop. Most of the shows are in Kentucky and Tennessee in the Southeast celebration being the biggest one this practice has been going on for a very long time and the humane society is trying to crack down on it. they go to some of these shows and they test the animals Hawks and if they have any traces of chemicals than the horses disqualified but they cannot get to every show. If you go to a show make sure you take pictures and videos of the horse. And spread the word that the Tennessee walkers are being abused. This cruel practice has to stop. Tennessee walkers are very gentle loving horses and they do not deserve this!!!

It's too late for that. That's not how it's happening. BigLickers have pulled away from all affiliations. They have their own shows (no natural TWH owner would go to them!!!) and their own judges now.
The treatment of these horses is so messed up and absolutely disgusting. I bought a horse once in my home country (Australia) that was harness broken and the breeder/seller was stupid enough to show me a video of them breaking her to harness and how they got her to lift her feet higher - with steel hose clamps just under the heel and around the top of the coronet band. I was nearly sick. They were so proud of themselves. Both horses I got from them died of massive issues to do with worm burdens. Not small money either. They werent this particular breed, but my chosen breed which I shall not name as there arent that many here and it would just give it away instantly.

I remember when a Western Pleasure horses head was to be carried level with their withers. Then they decided the tip their ears should be below the withers. That went on for decades too, but humanity kicked in and threatened the AQHA show World...I went to Congress and noticed there are no more peanut pushers in the ring. In fact proper head carriage marks very well, while too low a headset, that used to clean up, don't even place anymore. Thank God.
Just because something wrong has been done for decades, doesn't make it right, or justify the atrocity to continue.

These people in favour of the Big Lick and all that it entails, are mentally dysfunctional. If they can't see the cruelty, they should be banned for life from owning, training, working or riding these horses both in and out of competition. When I lived in Tennessee, I learned that even Lamar Alexander would not intervene - revenues to the State of Tennessee were too great to be ignored. How sad is that?
They could ALL still show flat shod horses and revenues would grow because all TWH could then compete. Many will not because of the abuse and subsequent breakdown of many horses. It is a lie that they could not bring in same revenue. They do not plan to chg.
At the ranch I boarded my horses at, we had a lady who had a Tennessee Walker, who asked me to ride for a show. Leading up to the show she was teaching me how to que the gaits, and her horse was wearing low pads without weights or chains, or anything on his legs, and no tail brace. She said the pads would be gradually stacked higher over 3 months till show time, but she never mentioned anything about using chemicals or anything about soreing. According to her, a Tennessee walkers gait is inherited, but the big lick and entire composition is man made, by use of pads. She equated it with body modification, like tattoo's and piercing. She used padded ankle weights only when we were training and they didn't rub or hurt the horse, and he seemed perfectly fine and comfortable.
It's probably a good thing I ended up breaking my wrist and not making that show, cause if I had seem this soreing thing going on, they woulda had to have the cops drag me outa there for assault and disturbing the peace.
