Bolger may have popularised 'stitch and glue' construction using copper wire and plywood in the US, but's been in widespread use in Britain for well over 60 years. In fact, three boats have been discovered at Ferriby, North Yorkshire, using oak strakes stitched with yew withies and caulked with moss, which were used to trade across the North Sea to mainland Europe. The oldest of the three is over 4,000 years old.
Our friend @seanmccambridge has a Slicer. Looks fun but you need a cabin with little ones. would be cool to see a slicer with a crouch cabin. Thanks for the comment! Cheers
Makes me think of the old cartoon “the cars of tomorrow from yesterday” when they show the king sized station wagon, although this a boat. The vessel provides individual seating for the whole family, with the mother in law seat in the far far back behind the dog. 👍
You have 4 people aboard that boat????? Wowee!!!! We are two aboard a 50' Motoryacht and we still wish we had more room lol. That my friends is tiny living truly at its finest!!! God speed, fair winds and following seas to you and your family. :)
Hi William, Noted. It sounded good in my headphones but I take your point. Regarding the motor, We will be experimenting with electric motors on our next rig, but we are using what she came with, and its quiet and wicked efficient. This would make an excellent electric boat.
If I recall correctly Bolger had designed this general hull concept in a variety of sizes, from the Sneakeasy runabout to the big Wyoming power cruiser. The Wyoming is a thing of legend. People are always talking about how someone needs to build one because it's so cool. I don't think the plans are still available though.
The Wyoming would be amazing, but so hard to trailer! The Tennessee looks killer though. We want to see one in person some day. Love the state class battleship names. I bet you could get plans from Suzanne.
Many years ago I read that someone in Australia built a Wyoming. If I recall correctly he built it in sections that he joined at a later stage. At 51 ft she's quite the battleship as far as backyard builders are concerned.
Build a second one, connect them (knot them together, don't screw them tight!) with beams (2 to 4, depending on stability) and you have a small catamaran that is even more stable on the water and offers significantly more living space. Beaching is still possible, but the other options have been significantly multiplied. You can use everything from the sun deck to overnight accommodation and a complete small kitchen. Even small trips along a sheltered coastline would be possible with few waves.
Wow, this video popped up unexpectedly! But yes, the Bolger Idaho, how obscure is that? A very interesting, "odd" boat. But actually quite pragmatic. Slices through water but sips gas. Go on epic adventures! But only on calm waters. Lakes, rivers, bays. possibilities are endless.
I like Your boat very much. I like the elegance, simplicity and economy. However, unfortunately, boat fees and taxes, marina prices are mostly related to length.
Blessings be all around your lovely family. What an absolutely beautiful area to raise your family. That hull. I don’t understand the narrow width even for utilizing a wheel chair.
Thanks Johnny, The narrow width may have been for efficency & speed, rather than the wheelchair. The back door has an extra hinge so it opens wide enough for a chair. theres plenty of pace to wheel around inside. Bruce Hallman had some renders up with the chair inside. They have been included in some of the other videos and will be featured on some upcoming boat tour videos.
That's an interesting design. Looks great for rivers. It might be a bit too rolly for the Chesapeake Bay where I live but it would be fun in the rivers and marshes. I'd love to camp in it on the water from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon during the warm weather.
I like that you used to climb trees!!! My buddies and I had a game as teens, We'd find a talltree, climb to the top and look for the next tall tree to climb! Lots of fun until I fell from the top of an oak tree one outing! Luckily a good sized branch broke my fall 8ft from the ground (it broke and I lasnded flat! Very lucky to only be badly brused and cut up but otherwise fine)! Great boat, I'm a Bolger fan, it perfectly works for your family! AllthebestRoy
ROY! Yeah, we have decent gear, and some real nice trees to climb in the yard. It's quite fun! Glad you survived your fall ;) We are fans of your work as well.
@babybluesbyphilbolger I have a nice cedar tree in the back that I'm adding hydro pole like pegs to make it easy to get to a crotch that would make a perfect perch to watch the wildlife! Lol! Always looking to have some fun! You all get it! AllthebestRoy
I live in Idaho and I really like that boat. Like the state it has character, has the looks that only a mother can love but is immensely practical. Just like Elmer Keith, a famous Idahoan who instrumental in the development of the 357 and 44 magnum cartridges. By the way, do you know where the name Idaho comes from?
At 72, I wish I had the courage to do with my kids what you're doing with yours. Memories are for ever. I have memories- driving 1700 miles to disney and hearing are we there yet? And that's just leaving the driveway.
@comfortablynumb9342 Turn on the auto generated subtitles and turn off the sound. Simple. You must find it hard listening to someone singing with instruments playing in the background like almost every piece of music ever. It's such a shame that people like you can't enjoy music like us normal people.
As a native Oregonian, you did a GREAT job on the boat! Amazing. If time permits, come down highway 97 and stop at Crystal Springs which is near the Collier Logging Museum and near a town called Chiloquin (I used to live there when I was a boy), the lake/pond allows only hand powered craft and it’s one of the two places in the world where mere’s eggs can be found on the bottom (I probably misspelled that one). I know the kids will be amazed, the clear water gives the impression that your canoe is floating in air. I beg of you to not give those sweet children a single vacks seen!! Wait until their minds have developed and if need be, lie about them having up to date shots!
HOW MUCH DOES IT WEIGH? SUGGESTED UPGRADE. 1. INSTALL SOLAR PANELS UNLIMITED FOR POWER AND LIGHTING. 2. MINI DESALINATION PLANT (SIZE OF A SMALL FRIDGE). FOR UNLIMITED FRESH DRINKING WATER ANYTIME ANYWHERE.
That's got to look strange sitting on a trailer behind a car going down the road. Probably even stranger hanging out of a normal sized car garage with a hole cut in the garage door for the extra boat length.😅
IMO; Just a homely cabin and less attractive sheerline version of Wm. Garden's "Tlingit" (and smaller too!). Just a little flam and she'd dry out significantly.
@@babybluesbyphilbolger Could be speakers. Your voice is overpowered on my laptop speakers. With high quality headphones, I can understand you, but the music is still obtrusive. I've never seen a YT video when I thought, "Gee. This would be better with louder background music."
Nobody knows for sure where the word "Idaho" came from. One of the earliest *documented* uses of the word was the name of a passenger boat that served up and down the Columbia river in the 1800s. So, good name for a boat.
Toddlers on the water is a nooo bueno... I don't own boats anymore, when i did i read just about everything available pertaining to safety. Without a doubt the most experienced and credible authors made it very clear, don't take toddlers on little boats and canoes. Stay alert 👍 good luck

Thank you! Great info.
I love boats where the captain sits on an ice chest.
Hell yeah Doggie!
Ice chest doubles as a life raft.
@ for ten to twelve adults?
There is my retirement plan. Been looking for a boat like this for years. Thanks, and good travels.
Build one and document it! We'd love to see more Idahos.
I have built at least a dozen Bulger designed boats. By Far and Away my favorite of all boat Architects and designers
We are in agreement there my friend. Bolger Rules.
I,ve built a few Bolgers. A 26 ft Slicer has been my daily driver for 16 yrs. A great boat.
Our friend @seanmccambridge has a Slicer. Looks fun but you need a cabin with little ones. would be cool to see a slicer with a crouch cabin. Thanks for the comment! Cheers

I so remember that cartoon. Thanks for the memories!
I thought I was pretty familiar with Bolger's designs, but this is a new one on me. I like it.
Thanks Troy. There's only two of these that we are aware of. We believe one is in Argentina.
love that sleek boat! your videos are great too!
Thanks Doggie!
I built a Phil Bolger row boat years ago, lots of fun to build and row! I still have his catalog of plans.
Heck yeah. Love homebuilds. We've managed to collect quite a stack of Phils stuff too.
love the "new" old baby pics...
Little dorks!

And they are growing FAST! What are we going to do?!
I see a bigger boat in your future.. :)
Build an identical one and join them with a cabin in between.
I’m not sure wishing “following seas’ is a blessing or curse with that vessel. But you’ve got to love 1 ga/hr at 12 knots,

Slick little cruiser. 🤩 Love Bolger designs. Did a June Bug a long time ago and would have loved to build a Micro.
Glad you dig it! June Bugs and Mircos are super cool. Bolger rules.
Try having the music a bit lower than the voice volume. Unless you were going for annoying.
Why not an electric motor?

Phil Bolger: a man that could make the difficult easy.

In unprotected waters, outriggers would save the day.
PLEASE DO NOT play ANNOYING FOREGROUND "music" while attempting to narrate a video!!!
