- We finally filled the door in our kitchen (don't worry, we have another one on the other side of the kitchen!) and refinished the ceilings where I pulled down the soffits.

Drywall dust IS the worst, it's not just you who hates it! Plus doing this work overhead day after day is not easy. Great job!!! And I love your tip about spraying the plastic before taking it down - brilliant! Can't wait for your cabinet building video!
Those wooden folding TV trays are the unsung heroes of moving and settling in!😂 Also investing in a household steam machine cleaner is BRILLIANT for awkward jobs like the tracks for the sliding doors, window sills, around the bathroom corners and joints and icky places. I have the McCULLOCH
MC1385 Deluxe Canister Steam Cleaner from Amazon and it's been my workhorse, it blasts everything with hot steam, good and super clean and EASY just wiping away. Pricey but I will buy it again when this one wears out lol.🤷♀️
We're all cheering you on Casey and Alan!🎉
You’re a boss!! And dry wall dust is ridiculous and discouraging even if you pay someone else to create it for you. I’m so enjoying your journey🥰
Loving your home updates. You remind me of my late husband and myself tackling many projects. A few years ago we flooded and had to redo our kitchen among other other areas. Fortunately I had a fellow church member who is a carpenter that built my cabinets from scratch. What I wanted to share with you is he recommended that I replace the lower cabinets with drawers instead and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. I have 16 drawers of varying heights & depths and it so much more efficient than traditional cabinets with shelves. I have bead-board cabinets and love the look. Looking forward to your progress and successful finish. Have a blessed day.
I'm thoroughly enjoying watching you refurbish your new home..... I have to admit though, I actually can't wait to see your new sewing room.
You are literally the human version of ''The little engine that could''
Don't be hard on yourself. You have done a marvelous job.
Nothing better than a sewist measuring and cutting and then putting those pieces back together…perfection!
You and your husband are doing a wonderful job - you should be very proud of yourselves! I look forward each week to seeing what you’ve accomplished. It’s going to look amazing when you get done!
I really love your honest approach. A lot of people online want to come across as if they're experts in everything they touch, so watching you figure things out on your own time and enjoying the process so much is so refreshing and valuable.
Your kitchen is coming along beautifully. Don't let drywall mud discourage you. I know it's a mess to deal with, but look at that beautiful ceiling. I'm excited to watch you build the kitchen cabinets. Again, don't get discouraged if you mess up (it's just wood). Regroup, rethink and git'er done. I just finished a huge project of staining the brick on our home with the help of my son. The estimates were $3200K. We UA-camd it and got it done for $400 in 4 days with our labor and many, many trips to Home Depot and Lowe's. The white stain has transformed our home. We love it. I can't wait for your next video.
Yes!! I love that y'all did it yourselves!! The labor is often the most expensive part of hiring out these big projects!
@@PatternScout Yes, labor is the most expensive part. Labor is something I can do, however, when it comes to plumbing, electrical, structural and brute strength I always hire out. It's definitely not worth it to hurt yourself. Alan inspired me to lay down my own flooring and I am beginning that project today in my master bedroom!
@@angietoscano103 That's awesome!!
You mean $3,200.00? 3200K is very different. $3,200.00 is 3.2K.
You’re far more courageous than I’ve ever been, and your determination is amazing!!
You and your husband are totally amazing - well done you ❤
So very impressive, Casey! I believe what you're doing renovation wise is exactly like sewing...people will only see the imperfections if you point them out. Looking forward to your next video.
I'm impressed that you tackled drywall. It turned out great! We hired a 'professional' to scrape our popcorn ceilings and they did a bad job. But it's the ceiling and unless you REALLY look, you don't even notice.
You deserve a medal for taping and jointing that kitchen. Had to do it years ago and it is so difficult 🙂
You’re doing great. Dry wall is a lot to deal with. You might want to get a sander on a stick, to do it from a distance. Keep up the great work. Also, I’m even nervous when sewing expensive fabric 😊
Sooo smart you and hubby wearing hearing protection. Your older selves will thank you. Loss of hearing sucks.
Something important to remember when renovating a specific area is the budget. Make sure to have a spreadsheet of everything you’ll need for the project separated into categories eg drywalling, electricity, plumbing, tiling, painting, hardware, cabinets, countertops, miscellaneous. And sub categories of supplies and tools in each one. Also factor in a reserve of about 15%. This helps if you’re learning on the job so to speak. Strength to you both.
Oh Girl YOU are killing it!!
Also, be so glad you used that 10 inch drywall knife. I tried to use the big one??? No go!! It's so heavy with mud on it trying to hold that thing over my head?? Nonono. I was in tears because I couldn't do it!! The 10 inch made me feel so much better!! Ceilings are HARD. I am so very proud of you. I look forward to these videos so much. If I wasn't so far away in Georgia I would come and help you and be your " fetch it for me " friend ❤
Me too! I would love to be the fetch it girl
Nice job. My husband and I did all the drywall, mud and tape in our whole basement. It is hard work. We did have someone come in and do the ceiling and you can definitely tell the difference. 😂😂😂!
What a job! The meltdown is totally understandable. I used to be a house painter, and an ex of mine did renovations and I worked for him for awhile. Drywalling can be can be deceptively taxing and tiring (especially when you have to create essentially a sauna with plastic to contain the dust!), and you're doing an awesome job! 🙌 You should definitely treat yourself to a massage. ☺
I was all "la-di-dah!" until the sanding part! I was all "I actually kind of enjoy drywall finishing!" until the sanding part! The dust is truly overwhelming haha.
With a few vacuum attachments your life could be easier. That little crevice tool is made for crevices not floors or counters. 😊
Home RenoVision DIY is a great UA-cam channel for home work. He is so knowledgeable!
It’s also a good idea to take pictures before you hang drywall to know where your studs are , for cabinets for example
That's why you're Pattern Scout, not Rip the Seams Scout...
You're doing great.
We're doing a renovation soon. You have given me encouragement that I can do these tasks, as well. Thank you!
I cracked up about you watching YT to learn...sort of like when we watch your sew alongs! The tables are turned..😘 Can't wait to see the end results!
Looks freaking awesome! Good job, girl!! No doubt you're exhausted...always harder to keep it together when tired. Completely normal. You're a legend. x
Currently my situation is watching painters doing exactly what you’re doing! Your work looks amazing! I have done it in the past and you’re right! Sheet rock dust SUCKS A BIT FAT ONE! And even with professionals doing everything right in my house, it is still landing on other areas of the house. I just have to suck it up and pay for help to clean after every one is finished because I have a spinal cord injury and I just can’t 👏🏻😬 congrats on the wonderful success you are having my friend!
I think you did an amazing job; can't wait for more videos!
My late husband taught himself how to do renovations and electrical and plumbing…before You Tube! Thank goodness we have this free resource today. You’re doing an amazing job. I can’t wait to see you build your cabinets. 😊
You are continuing to show us how mighty you are!
When you were just working on the ceiling and saying that it still looks kind of rough, about every 30 seconds for the last couple of minutes, I had said oh that looks better. You’re doing great don’t worry.
Look into wet sanding! You wet a big sponge ring it out and rub that instead of dry sanding which makes a huge dust mess.
My husband and I do a lot of our home projects ourselves also. And we rely on your tube always!
Love watching you accomplish amazing things! 🤩
I will definitely try that next time! Thanks for the tip!
Every time you put in a shot of Huxley, my heart absolutely melts!
Fabulous job. You both are working so hard. The kitchen ceiling is perfect. Especially when you calculate your savings if you paid a pro. Hard to find a dry wall professional for small jobs, too. Granted, the job didn’t seem small to DIYers! Loved seeing your pup shopping at Home Depot.
Oh my gosh, what a huge undertaking! Your ceiling looks great. You both are doing a fantastic job 👍
Drywall dust is a pain in the rear end. You did a wonderful job and it’s looking so much more open and airy in the kitchen. 🥰👍
For a newbie, I think your drywall turned out great! I discovered in my (pretty limited) drywall experience, that it's a matter of mudding and sanding until YOU are satisfied. Repeat, repeat, repeat. But once you're happy with the joints and add some wall texture, no one is the wiser! And yes, drywall dust is The Actual Worst because it's so damn fine and sticks to everything!
As for DIY vids on UA-cam, I am SO GLAD that so many episodes (and segments) of This Old House are available. They're the best.
I feel like that is so true! Once I got into the process, I realized I could really add as many coats of the compound as I wanted to get it smooth, and each coat made it better!
As painters we had to do lots of drywall repairs, big and small. We had a sanding attachment for our shop vac that really helped with the dust. you can get various grit mesh for it. With your big shop vac it would have been quite awkward doing the ceiling unless you attached a longer hose however for any repairs you may be doing for the walls you might want to purchase that and several grit meshes. . You can get an adapter for the end of the hose that would fit the attachment. We had a smaller shop vac and could attach it to our ladder for higher work. We used it to pre sand all our walls before painting. Really handy. You are very brave and doing great.
Casey, I think you did an amazing job on that ceiling considering you’ve never done it before. You and Alan did a great job removing that outer door, you’ll be happier with it gone. I agree about UA-cam they are my classroom. ❤️🇨🇦
This would all be so much more challenging without UA-cam! :)
Use undercoat paint on the ceilings before painting them with ceiling paint. That will hide any leftover blemishes and help the ceiling paint look smooth. Walls too. Its a step most people avoid due to costs but honestly it gives the whole thing a look of high class.
Great job. If you are able to remove the door that slides you can clean or replace the rollers and the door should be easier to move. Just remember you are getting great UA-cam content with all your footage!
Casey I think you have done an amazing job the ceiling looks fab. Dust is the absolute worst especially since you are living in your house, I feel your pain ☹️but really well done for persevering and just cracking on. I doubt a professional could have done it much better and think how much you have saved doing it yourself. Cute footage of your dog in the trolley 🤗🤗look forward to your next instalment. I think you are so brave making the cabinets 👏👏
The kitchen is looking great, it may not feel like it but your hard work is paying off! To avoid drywall dust you can use a damp sponge to "sand" high spots. A big sponge, a small bucket of water (to clean the sponge and keep it damp), and a gentle touch is my preferred method, but for large areas it may not be as efficient. It's cheap ingredients if you just want to experiment with it. Keep up the good work and I'm really looking forward to your cabinet building.
You are amazing! So much hard labor. Your arms must be getting so strong. Looks like a beautiful job to me. Thanks for sharing.
I feel tired just watching you. You've done amazingly well....pat yourself on the back 👏
The dust! The rage! How well I remember. Thank you for being so honest about ALL the feelings, especially the sense of accomplishment. You are doing a terrific job!
You’re doing an incredible job Casey. Hope you’re proud of what you’ve achieved already. ❤
You’re doing a great job, Casey! I was thinking… I bet you’re doing better than a drywaller would on his first go at sewing. 😊 I look forward to seeing your progress on Wednesdays!
That's a great way to look at it! 😄
I love how fearless you are! Nothing’s worse than using up every iota of strength and energy on a project and then having to face a grueling clean up. The ceiling loos so good!
Hi, you did an excellent job with the ceiling, if any imperfections exist that's fine, have you seen what what you have accomplished? As a DIY. You should be so proud of yourself. ❤
You amaze me every week with what you accomplish. That ceiling is fantastic! You should be so proud of yourself. Job well done! Gonna be amazing. Big Hugs
Thank you so much!
You should most definitely be pleased with your drywall job!!! Fantastic work!!
Love this series and love your attitude of trying new things and not afraid if things get messy ❤❤❤❤
Hi Casey. I love your videos; they have inspired me to get back to garment sewing and now you've inspired me to get going on some minor remodeling projects around my house. I was sanding popcorn off my ceiling this morning. 😅 Thank you so much for your honesty and energy. Looking forward to seeing your progress in next week's video.
That is so awesome!! Glad to hear it :) Thanks so much for watching and cheering me on!
Nice job! I’m the opposite. I LOVE the demolition process.
You did a fantastic job! I’ve always been told that it will get worse before it gets better. I personally believe that. But I can also tell you this, You rock! Keep your head up. You’re doing great.
Ah thanks! Yes, I keep reminding myself of that exact mantra!
I love watching your progress on your new house. Working on your kitchen will be so rewarding for you. I have always wanted to do this kind of project. I cheer you on with each with each video.
Great progress! You’ll be amazed if you get new roller wheels for the bottom of your slider. It makes it roll buttery smooth. Cheers!
Wow! It s coming along! Your fearless attitude inspires me!
What a smart girl you are - you are so hard working and you’re still standing. Great watching you.
Awesome job! I am really enjoying these videos - sorry, though, at the expense of all your hard work 😮 I have greater appreciation since my kitchen is being upgraded. The deconstruction phase is not fun, and it seems everything takes longer than you anticipated. I can’t wait to see you put the pretty in. Take care of yourselves. 🌹
Casey!!!! Where you at girl??? We are ready to see the next phase - I know you’ve both been working hard and I can’t wait to see what you’ve accomplished. ❤
You are doing Great. I had to cut a hole in my basement ceiling because of water leakiage from upper level. I've been looking for someone to replace the drywall in the ceiling, but thanks to you, that will be my next project.
Yay! If I can do it, you can do it! :)
I think you’re doing a fantastic job and meltdowns are inevitable when you tackle that kind of remodel. Can’t wait to see how the kitchen cabinets turn out!!! ❤
You’re doing so well! It’s looking great! Good for you for not being afraid to give it a shot. You definitely can do it!
Casey is such an inspiration.
You are doing great. Thank you for sharing with us. I’m enjoying your videos very much.
I love these episodes! It's so fun to watch you two get after it. 😀
I felt your feelings. Love your channel.
Hopefully you were able to add blocking in the doorway you filled in. This will be needed if you add cabinets or open shelves to the area.. looking great so far!
Very impressive and very inspiring, Casey!😀
Fantastic job! Good on you for seeing it through. 😊
Great job! You are awesome. Loving all these videos.
Thank you! So glad you are enjoying them!
This is AMAZING !!! Hope u r taking some time for yourself after this 🙂 am lovin these videos ( although love your sewing ones more)-take care + thank u
PROUD OF YOU!
Hi, congratulations on finishing this part of your kitchen makeover. You did it, and if you'll have to do it at some time in the future, you'll know that you can do it, and you'll know how you can make any improvement should you feel the need to.
I had to look up what soffits are. I have never heard the word before, but I now have improved my English vocabulary, which I'm very happy about, as I'm not a native English speaker and don't use the language regularly. After having seen a very short video on how to make them i wonder:what's the obsession with the color brown, but that too probably also comes from not being American. We always go for light colors here, probably because our very dark winters.
Your dog must have had fun riding in the front in that cart at Home Depot. Prime views and smells, without any walking. He looked so cute. (Am I mistaking the sex here? If I am I do apologize.) Yours, Ann
That looks so good! You’re killing it! 💪🏼
Thanks!! Hoping to start covering the walls SOON!! :)
I am so excited for this! It is looking great 🤗
Oh Wow. I put my comment before I saw the end.
WHAT you did it!! Its good!! Very very good
Boy, the kitchen reminds me of my old house in Azusa, CA. But we just called the all seasons room, and enclosed patio. Closing off the other door is smart to give you more wall space for mounted cabinets. Especially since you’ve removed the ones between the kitchen and dining area. Looking forward to what’s next.
I was just thinking the same thing as you were talking about the door, how it was giving you a workout. I want you to know that, although you still had to move your body side to side some, it was much less after you cleaned it and lubed it.
Well done, looking amazing.
It’s looking great ! ❤
I regularly spray WD-40 on the inside and outside of my sliders’ upper & lower tracks in this house. It’s amazing how well they slide afterwards. It also somewhat discourages bugs in spring & fall. I used to use a wet rag to smooth dried drywall seams rather than sanding due to an extreme dislike of the sanding dust. My Heart’s Dearest always said my finishing was better than his! He might have been just trying to encourage me, but he seldom gives either criticism nor praise.😂
I once had a complete meltdown after a day long effort at removing trim and prepping to do wallpaper. Do Not recommend doing wallpaper of any type! It’s a pain to do, doesn’t last forever, and is a worse pain to remove when it begins to look shabby-or starts peeling off the walls/ceiling in places.😾
Amazing! Good Job! Keep it up!!
Looks fantastic!
Good job! And yes drywall dust is the worst.
The WORST! 😅
Great job!!
Being anxious keeps you on your toes. It makes you pay attention to what you are doing.
Absolutely ❤
That is so inspiring
Amazing!!!
What a great job Casey !!!
Thank you!
Drywall has to be the absolute worst job, I did my basement so I speak from experience! You did a great job.
I think you need a new roller on your sliding door. It sounds like it's flattened out and is just rubbing along in the track. Maybe that should be number 645 on your to-do list.
Ooh, I will look into that. I think you are right!
Yes this! You might be able to lift the door straight up, enough to clear the track, remove it, and see what lies beneath.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!! That is so nice!
The rollers and track on the actual doors themselves might need a clean. That would be another issue why the door isn't sliding well. I use UA-cam for lots of stuff especially putting together Ikea or other flat pack furniture. If UA-cam ever goes away I don't know what I'd do 😂
Great idea loosing that door.
It sounds like you're sliding glass doors need to have their wheels replaced. If you take the doors out of the slider you'll see that there are small wheels in the bottom and possibly the top of the doors. They need to be replaced periodically. It's usually an easy fix.
Have never heard of an all season room , in the uk 🇬🇧 we have conservatory do you not have them in the USA
What is the reason to put dawn in the joint compound? I feel your pain. I hate drywall dust. And it has a weird smell.
I was curious about the Dawn too. Never seen that before.
