Question? Why did you raise the heels like that? I've never seen that before?

Abigail Anderson - some trainer's request this to help with traction, especially on a muddy track.

Hi Joel, They keep the shoes on but usually they are changed every 30 days- another reason the walls get kind of funky sometimes. And why they use smaller race nails. Sure are simpler than working with gaited horses, pads, etc. Glad you enjoy the videos- of course we are just filming what's going on, not always in ideal conditions or with the best of feet for sure!

I shoe walking horses and saddlebreads and morgans with all kinds of hoof problems i still only use 6 nails the less nails in the hoof the better and the closer you put your nails to the heel the better they stay on a shoe does not get lose at the toe no need for 8 nails my padded shoes stay on 6 to 8 weeks no problem with 6 nails

Hi Joel, Appreciate your comments. Of course there is an extreme difference in the size of nails used for race horses versus gaited horses. That has something to do with it. Also racehorses are traveling at high speed and have to cross over blacktop and concrete sometimes on the way to the track and the 3-1/2 race nails sure don't have the strength of an 8 or 10 regular. Not every foot gets 8 nails, sometimes 6 will be used, but the hoof wall condition often dictates that as you would expect.

Not sure where to start. The hoof wall has white line disease, you get a glimpse around (0:21). Ray needs eight nails because of the bend he put in the shoe at the heel...this is going to tear at the nail attachments. My guess is he thinks is "fixing" the underrun heel (3:21) with that trick...but look at the stress at the coronet...very sad
